Living on a farm and protecting chickens, I've been setting live traps for years, and they work great. I usually use dry cat food to get possums, and either that or quartered apples for racoons. I did get a groundhog once or twice with apples, but they're tough to catch...lol. Last year I set two live traps in my barn and caught a mother racoon and her three youngsters in two days.

It sounds like these traps have served you well also! I actually have expanded my line and I have two traps out right now baited with some old apples. I am hoping for a raccoon. We will see if he showed up early in the morning! Thank you for sharing your experience and for tuning in! Take care.

Nice catch, I have been using a Havahart live catch trap for over a decade on problem feral cats (TNR Program), opossums, and raccoons. I never used any camo for the trap, I would just set it out in the open where they frequent and would always catch one. I have found that dried cat food seems to work as the best bait for all three critters. Opossums and raccoons just LOVE dried cat food. Especially the Purina Cat Chow Complete! If you want to avoid catching a feral cat, try using fruit like apples or watermelon. Happy trapping!

I bought some country property in Arkansas and it was extremely populated with tics- a opossum's staple diet. They can eat hundreds in one day. Couldn't go anywhere without finding a tic crawling on you. I highly recommend letting these creatures do what they were designed for which is reducing the population of tics and cleaning up nature's garbage. They also make pretty good pets. Except for the time my terrier brought something into the living room that resembled one of her toys. She plopped it on the rug and there it was a adolescent opossum taking its last breaths- or so I thought. Went to get a bag, came back and the damn thing had taken off somewhere in my house. Gee, it did something it's also good at- playing dead or dying. Eventually I found it hiding behind some furniture and released it. The last thing I needed was for it to come out behind some furniture when or if I had guest over.

When I opened the trap for the cat, he shot out of there like a lightning bolt! He was pretty confrontational compared to the possum : ) Thank you so much for your time and kind words Gary!

Lol. you wasted a viennas on a possum. Man your generous .I'd go fishing , eat the fish and use the heads for bait. You could use dead minnows from a bait shop. Coarse I am a keyboard commando noitall . Good vid, and thankyou for sharing your experience with us.

Cheap canned cat foods good too, get the dented can and ask for a discount. Keep the viennas for lunch with crackers and hot tea. Seriosly I understand canned cat food a great attractant for trappers.

I have honestly never seen a skunk in my area as they are quite rare around here to my knowledge. I have been told that the best way to prevent from being sprayed is to cover the trap completely with an old blanket. It would definitely be a delicate process and I would proceed with great caution :)

    1. Camoflague is only good for the humans.
    Animals dont care too much.
    2. Always check traps at least once every 24 hours. I dont know about your state but in mine it is the law.
    3. Put the trap in a large heavy bag of some kind, or carry a disposable tarp in case of skunk.
    Good luck.
    4. Bait you are feeding the animals.
Tuna cat food works well also for possum and raccoon.
Use a small can preferably without the pull tab. Using an can opener make a couple of small holes in the can. The pointed end of a bottle opener works well. The animals can smell the bait but cant really get to it.
This is important for raccoons. A large raccoon can wreck that trap. This is from personal experience.
To trap skunks especially besides buildings use the building on one side and a 2x6 or 2x8 on the other to create a funnel into the trap. They dont really see that well or respond to bait very well.
    Fot nuisance animals relocate appropriately.
Every animal has a range if you dont move them a pretty good distance they will come back

    • @blackhatbushcraft
      @blackhatbushcraft  3 года назад +1

I am definitely a stickler for checking the traps on time. I would never let them set for more than 24 hours and honestly I try not to go that long. You gave some solid tips and I appreciate you sharing your knowledge and experience. Thanks for taking the time to tune in Shawn!
