Surprisingly strong jaws on that possum. They aren't aggressive and not known to bite, but a frightened animal will employ any self-preservation tactics it can, in order to survive. I wouldn't be testing an aroused possum. If one can chew a rat in that manner, then he can inflict a memorable bite.

Yes. Their bite can be brutal and thry get infected like cat bites do because of all the bacteria in their mouths. I've been bit a couple of times by my non-releasable adult male with no depth perception. He came to me to rehab as an infant couldn't be released. My girls were very gentle and were able to take live crickets or meal worms from my fingers without biting me. Such soft and gentle mouths, they love to lick, then rub on you like a cat when they are happy. If your really loved abd extremely lucky they will do the opossum twist for you after the lick, rub session. It's the CUTEST THING EVER! They are super cool animals .

Bend the metal stick (trigger). Just put a slight bend in the middle to shorten the rod a hair and the trap should be harder to set. So watch your fingers. But now it will be a hair trigger. Learned this from my grandpa and it has worked well for me, also.

Chris......that was great! Possums sure are strange looking critters. We had 'em when we lived in Oregon. I caught a few in traps, but always managed to let them go....mostly missing a few toes I'm afraid. In High School, a friend and I thought of the perfect senior prank. We went out one night and caught three possums alive and put them in a gunny sack. Next day, we put them in a gym bag and took them into the lunch room where we unzipped the bag, left it under a table, and moved off to watch the fun.....sadly, the principle saw us do it! He walked over before the possums could come out and play, peeked inside, and zipped it up! We got called to the office and chewed out something terrible, threated with being expelled and a slow and painful death if we ever did anything like that again, and all that sort of stuff. On the way out the door, the principle said "Damn it you guys.....why did you let me see this? That would have been great!! But don't do this kind of shit any more!" Ha! He was really a pretty good guy.

yeah, rodents love to eat other rodents. they'll all eat anything their size (including cannibalism) or smaller... I'm glad the mouse didn't go to waste!

Possums aren't rodents, but you're spot on about the cannibalism. Rodents are the absolute worst

It breaks my heart when I see a possum run over in the road. I've taken a few babies in the past to a rehabilitation center to be raised and released when I found them wandering loose and on their own. possums are omnivorous so I imagine he's going to go eat some fruit and veggies afterwards.

Rehab? Most people just shoot them. Not worth much. Horse owners hate them.

I used to own three horses here in Florida I don't know what your association with the possum and horses is they were never around my horses. In addition they're not considered nuisance animals like raccoons and coyotes. I am a hunter and a big time gun advocate but I don't believe in just shooting an animal for the sake of shooting it for target practice.

@@markanton2349 I have kept some, released a lot, killed a lot. If you're trapping Coyotes and have to remake a set day after day because of possums you eventually get sick of it. Turkey hunters hate possums too.

Coyotes are non-indigenous to Florida they have no purpose here and were brought here by accident because some idiot decades ago thought they were baby foxes. Florida in the past is mandated that they be removed. They're viewed much like feral hogs out west and here. They also tend to be rabid here because they eat the raccoons. They've inundated populated neighborhoods and attack household pets. we have tons of turkey where I live here in North Florida but I have no idea why turkey hunters would hate them other than possibly eating their eggs?
