That’s more than I can afford for a years worth of food shopping.
I went to my step mothers hen night at a restaurant. Two people wanted to split the bill equally. Just so happened these were the two who were ordering expensive bottles of wine all night. I don’t drink wine, I don’t even like drinking any alcohol with food, besides, I was breast feeding my two month old son. So I was on the side that flat out refused to cover their ridiculous alcohol consumption. In the end, these rather drunk ladies lost the argument. With their alcohol, each of us would have had to pay about £100 extra to our meals. I was on maternity leave and a newly single parent at the time, so bless him, my dad baby sat and gave me enough money to pay for my meal & his future wife’s. I couldn’t have covered a split bill even if I thought it was fair.
Roll on 20 years & my fella & I go out with a group of friends regularly for a pretty great Thai dinner. Everyone agreed a long time ago that drinks are bought by ourselves separately, but as the food is all of a similar price, we pay equally and throw in extra to cover the meal of a person if it’s their birthday. Turns out I’m not the only person who doesn’t like mixing alcohol with food!!

Three of them claimed to not have enough credit on their card, or balance on their debit. They all looked around, and truly had no idea what to do. as someone that's coming from the hospitality industry, I just want to mention that the reason why gratuities are added to big party checks sometimes is because of situations like split checks. Sometimes businesses will only add a gratuity if the checks are split. There are people in a party that will end up not tipping because they think someone else in the party has tipped enough for them. It happens all the time. They're over here fighting about who's going to pay for the food and some person making two to $5 an hour just waited on them all night and is going to get nothing because they can barely afford to pay their bill. That's heartbreaking. That's part the experience when eating out. In hospitality our job is to take care of the guests and to deliver for the guests. Wow. When standardized tipping is 15 to 20%, nobody deserves to have to take care of people like this.

I'm incredibly poor but I've lived well in the past. I've eaten at some nice restaurants where bills come to 3-4 digits for just a small party of 2-6 people and we always split the check by how much we spent on our own. The one thing we always agreed on is that we were eating at a nice restaurant and we were conducting ourselves like adults and since we were eating at really nice places we knew we could easily afford the meal or we didn't belong there. You can tell these people don't belong at this establishment.

Unfortunately my family is like this. On my brother’s birthday he will invite extended family, order anything then not want his invites to pay but expects me and my sister to pay ( he also has 3 kids and a wife). I don’t go to those dinners anymore

I am in shock. I cannot imagine going to a nice restaurant like with my husband and having to listen to this low level mentality fighting happening at the table next to me. These people are so ridiculous. I hope the restaurant said don’t come back to them.

I seen my brother down $50 in alcohol in the first 5 min of a family get-together at a restaurant when someone else was paying, so ordering drinks add up quick. Even going out for sushi, my friends wouldn't split, we'd have one person pick up the tab, and only time I'd splurge is if it was my turn to pick up the bill (and even getting a party platter to eat for breakfast for all of us since our local sushi spot wasn't open on Sundays). And I knew my one friend was on hard times so I'd really hold back when it was his turn to pick up the check (even ordering water to save money).
Like they say, money doesn't buy class! Those "friends" in the video are garbage! If they ever wanted to kick it at a restaurant again they better know you will only pay for yourself or do things that either don't cost money or they'd better get used to the idea of not using you to pick up their expensive meals! Also makes you think....how good of friends could they have been to treat their "friends" like that!? If anything maybe everyone chip in for the birthday girls dinner, but ordering lamb and steaks and expecting everyone to split evenly when they clearly didn't eat more expensive things is vicious! And to lose friends over that.....dude, I'd much rather have no friends than hang with those people just to fill a void (and make my wallet lighter)!

Right if you’re good friends you’re aware of their financial situation. That’s a huge bill. I don’t drink and alcohol can run a big bill up quickly. We have 5 kids(2 are grown) and we pay for all them but those are my kids.

I argued with one of my aunts because she took it upon herself to tell the waiter to split the bill. I bought £12 worth of food while everyone got £20-30 pounds worth of food. I called the waiter and told him I want to pay for my own bill. She was a bit buthurt but then I said I am not going to pay 3x extra that what I actually ate. It's bull*ish. no. She quietened down and did not challenge me to much because people like her are cowards who do not like people standing up to them. I can't even begin to imagine the audacity of this woman. It's insane.

This is an actual episode of that 90's sitcom called "Friends". Literally this exact thing happened with a fancy restraunt and the "split the bill evenly" crap.

I went out for a birthday dinner once for a friend and she was the only person I knew. It was "family style" so everyone shared all of the entrees. However, the other attendees ordered 6 bottles of wine and four desserts, while I only ate from two of the entrees and had water. I was expected to pay $160 when the bill was split evenly among all of the attendees.
I paid for two entrees and a dessert and "noped" right out of the post-dinner activities.
