Just like the red ring of death from the Xbox 360, likely using a heat gun and press to reinstall the chip and putting protection seal on the board. Don't drill or pierce the board because of internal wiring.
This is the first, honest video that I've found about a ps4 slim basically saying my blue light of death is practically unfixable. Everything else I've tried hasn't worked, and now finding this video almost makes me want to put the nail in the coffin so to speak of my ps4.......
So, you're telling me I should not buy a new power supply? I'm on the fence , about to buy it but if that's not the problem and the chip like you say , I'm screwed.
Very great content indeed, but one thing that I think was missed is that a failing hard drive can also be a cause for the BLOD. I was thinking my ps4 was toast after watching this but come to find out I replaced my hard drive and my ps4 is working like new again.
Same problem happened with the PS3...YLOD Solder cracks happen because the solder shrinks and expands a lot if the difference of temperature between the APU and ambient is big, So keep your console as cool as possible. @@ananasfx yep still going strong almost 4 months never showed any sign of any issues I also replaced the thermal paste and its running very smoothly and quiet
I've recently gotten the blue light, but sometimes my system works and sometimes it doesn't. I was able to boot it in safe mode, rebuild the database, and play games with no issues. Other times it boots normally, but when I press the PS button on the controller to get out of a game the whole system freezes and shuts off. I think it could be a hard drive issue but it's kinda irregular so I'm not sure.
We need to understand why these solderballs crack in the first place? obviously Sony still uses crappy thermal paste which dries fast, meaning overheating issues and causing cracks in the solder balls due to temprature differences between board & chip. I opened mine Ps4+Pro and put quality thermal paste within the warranty of the console and never have had hoverheating issiues
It's generally not a matter of the solder balls cracking. As I say in the video...many times it's caused by corroded solder pads. No way to know what's causing that but I doubt it's heat related.
Even a small amount of bad and old thermal paste is conducting the heat pretty well. Oxidation of solder materials is a common problem. The oxidation rate depends on the solder composition, room temperature but more important moisture and corrosive substances in the air. Adittionally there is a quality range within the soldering process at the manufacturing facility. That's why two people can buy two PS4 with the same production date at the same time and one brokes, the other not. Unfortunatly solder materials with low corrosion rates uses rare and super rare earth metals. Another method would be to apply an anticorrosive coating. The point is ... there is barely a benifit for sony in doing so: they just have to calculate that everything works for 2 years. After that: they don't care and you propably have to buy a new one.
This is just going to be reality for electronics as parts shrink and speeds go up. Through hole parts with tons of solder and signals in the low MHz don't show issues like 0.25mm balls of solder forming connections that run at GHz. The RoHS lead-free regulations didn't help that any.
🔴🔴Hello everyone. I have a similar issue with my PS4. When I turn on the console, the blue light turns on for 3 seconds and then it goes off..what could be the reason and solution for that. Help? 🔴🔴
Very nice channel Steve, channels like yours really help people with skills save a ton of equipment that normally would be put in a landfill. I have a PS4 project I’m working on now. Would a reball repair be considered a somewhat permanent fix? If I tried doing the washers and a quality thermal paste what are my odds it would work? Thanks for a great channel!!
It sure is if it was leaded solder this problem would have never happend in the ps4 BLOD and on the ps3 YLOD if i could use a bga i would use lead solder on any chip.
@@shakoor3218 At the moment I am trying to fix a 1215, I think it might have been dropped or the previous owner opened it without knowing what he did. He sold it as "doesn't turn on at all", when I tested it out it got the BLOD (and yes, I hate being lied to), but every now and then it actually turns on and then runs fine. I think the issue might be PSU-related, but at the moment I don't have another 1215 PSU to test it. I also have a slim with a BLOD (but this time I actually knew it was a BLOD, I needed it for spares), I am thinking about putting the board in the oven, just to see if that fixes it. I needed the drive and the case, so the board is a donor board anyways.
OK, back to that 1215. When I watched the video he said something about this being caused by corrosion. That gave me an idea. I have a can of penetrating oil around (you know, the stuff you spray on your spark plugs when they don't make good contact), I use it for cleaning switches like the Game Boy switch. It stops and removes corrosion. So I decided to spray it under the APU, just to see what happens. And after I gave it a good spray it now switches on immediately and every time.
@Swagonme22 It worked for around two days, then failed and is now back to the state it was before. It's basically been sitting here for ~six months now, but considering how the prices for these things have skyrocketed, I might try fixing it with washers and selling it as "working, but probably not for long".
Did you guys try adding a shim under the clamp? Would probably add a little more pressure. Would try without the nylon washers first, and then would try with. See if anything helps. Don't have a ps4 with the BLOD here, but may pick one up if I can find one cheap enough. Not really worth my time to mess with the clamp/shims though. Would just reball the thing.
Damn, I never experienced the blue light of death. The only issue i had with my base PS4 was the disc kept ejecting for no reason. It happened about 2 or 3 times.
Happen to me yesterday tried everything and only thing that worked was putting in a new harddrive so if you try option 7 on safe mode and it gets stuck on 99% swap hard drives and do the USB firmware update
Ok, I actually fixed a PS4 with BLOD with penetrating oil. It's not an instant fix, I actually don't know how long it takes until the console works again (maybe the oil has to dry out or something). I flushed the APU chip with penetrating oil about half a year ago (the stuff you get at any car parts shop, starter spray or something like that), the console worked at first, then had graphic glitches and eventually BLOD again. Had it sitting here for about half a year or so and on a whim decided to start it up again about a week ago, just for the sake of it. It works fine now. Tested it for hours with games, no issues at all. Penetrating oil removes corrosion, that's the main reason I tried it in the first place. Don't know how long the fix lasts, I am going to sell it off on ebay with an honest description as "working at the moment, but no guarantee how long". Me wanting to sell it on ebay was actually the main reason I started it up again. I also added some washers to give it the best chance to last as long as possible.
All you have to do is simple maintenance which means open it up and blow some compressor air into it and that will prevent future damage but no one does it
My ps4 stays flashing until I unplug it. It went into safe mode and after I had updated it started doing that. But every time I start it, it says something about the storage and then goes to a black screen
This is so sad... I started with this blue light problem blinking forever when I tried to update my PS4 Slim, it tried to restart as always the update process is but it couldn't. I could turn it on a few times after spending some minutes trying to make it work. Yesterday my 6 years old PS4 died. Sad thing is I already have paid for a 1 year Plus Extra subscription and I feel terrible loosing my money like this, plus theres no way I can buy a new PS4 or even a PS5. 😔😔

I always wondered why steve says that a bad APU cant be fixed. Seemed like he could try to reflow the chip. Sounds like its the same issue with reflowing bad GPU chips on laptops. Even if you get it to work, its temporary at best because its not sovling what caused the bad solder problem. Better to use it as a donor system. The BGA is just not an ideal solder joint.

I have has strange issue with PS4. I changed thermal paste and after assembling console together, console won't start. When I starts console, it beeps, turn on blue light and after few seconds it will turn off.
I got my PS4 used and when I first got it it would do the BLOD. It only did it a couple times when I first got it and it hasn't done it again in months. Also more recently my PS4 froze instantly cutting video and audio fto my TV. Pressing and holding the power button did nothing (I may not have held it long enough) so I had to unplug it. And finally a couple days ago I put it into rest mode and a couple hours later I was gonna turn it on and noticed the white light was blinking and I assume it had been blinking for hours. I held my finger on the power button for like 30 seconds and forced it off. None of these issues are persistent. Any idea what its deal is?
BLOD can also be caused by a bad hard drive. Recently my PS4 had a BLOD, I suspected a bad hard drive was the cause so I replaced the hard drive, reinstalled the system software and is now working perfecty, of course I have to download all the games again.
Just ran into this problem today after it was unplugged for a few weeks. The thing was stuck at the login screen and wouldn't sync with a controller, and eventually froze and shut off. Then the BLOD, wouldn't get to the recovery menu. I slapped the top of the thing, and it's working fine right now. Is it possible just smacked a solder joint on the APU back in place, or is it some other issue? Looking to sell it, but not gonna sell it if it's busted!

Asking for a friend of mine. He's ps4 start showing weird colours on screen with pixels, it also shows the error CE-36329-3. Is there any fix for this?
My ps4 randomly started breaking down. Games were slower, clicking on menus took forever, games would crash, freeze, and then the ps4 started turning off with software errors and corruption errors I believe. Now it doesn’t turn on after I fully inilatisied it, it does the blue light of death. Sometimes the PlayStation logo shows up, then just blackness. Very frustrating I haven’t even used it for more than 7 months
I have an off topic question if you dont mind. I am going to change the thermal pads on the ram. I know they are 1mn thick. A good friend says he did this, and used fugipoly extreme pads. After replacing all 16 cut 10x10 and 1 mm thick After he put it together he got the 3 beeps, of course his apu wasnt making contact. He checked to make sure he didnt leave a clamp loose, etc. So his conclusion was that the pads sony used were "soft", and the fugi ones were top of the line, and so softness. He had to ultimately use .5mm and it was better. He also said he has done them for years, and thats the first time. So what would you reccomend for me? Thanks in advance, I have learned so much from you
I don't know anything about those pads. I wouldn't change the pads unless you absolutely needed it. These consoles are very sensitive to hot tightly the APU is clamped down.
TronicsFix LLC no choice, few are missing. So best to just replace them all, or just the 4 or so that are missing? So I do the bolts to clamps a turn or so at a time once they are snug? I have done so many, and always do those by hand. Or is there another method you recommend?
loved this video and the other videos you done in the past. I wanted to know on the older ps4 if the two screws keeping the power supply down were loose can that cause the disk drive to not respond?
My ps4 slim was working like a charm and then one day it just wouldn't respond the way it should, and the ps4 would crash and won't turn off properly and it won't render game's like it used to, any advice and actions i should do???? Please help
Pro tip: waiting for people to tell you how to fix your problem in a youtube comment section is not your best approach. Try an electronics repair shop to attempt to identify the problem and possible solutions.
It's fixed by applying the right amount of heat very carefully over all the ram chips and apu with a heat gun. The solder melts and in some cases the solder joints re-apply themselves. Other times a re-bsll is in fact a must. Now, this isn't a job for a rookie as you can ruin your motherboard completely. I, in fact like to flow and then freeze my motherboards for 10 seconds. 9 times out of 10 I have a working console.
This seems Common... I have a different problem. When I turn it on, the blue light turns on, dims, then gets brighter, then the system shuts off. It does this in 3 seconds after turning the system on.
I had the blue light of death. It turns out I moved the hdmi leads around on my Samsung TV after decorating.thats when the problem began so I decided to rearrange the hdmi leads it fixed the problem. Hope that helps someone else. Its bizarre that just changing the lead to a different hdmi port fixed my problem!
This just randomly happened today when I booted it. But then I just held the power button and turned it off, turned it back on and now it’s fine after booting itself in safe mode. I’m wondering if I should be worried?
Lol happened to mine as well. Came across this video and was dripping with sweat as I had only had this for just about 2 months. Also got the same question as you.
Mine too is a day one console, but it broke 5 days ago and it's this blue light of death. Tomorrow I'll try to find someone who can repair it and I hope it can be repaired otherwise I'll be quite sad (because it lived for so long) and angry (because I'll have to buy a new one when the PS5 is coming out)
What questions do you have for me about the blue light of death (BLOD)? Thanks for the support!
TronicsFix LLC excellent video. Which is the cause of this corrosion you mentioned? Heat?. Or is because a poor quality soldering?
Honestly, I'm not sure. I would guess some of both. It wouldn't help if the console was dropped and/or handled roughly either.
TronicsFix LLC would a reflow work also?
What are the odds of this happening? Is it a fairly regular event or is it just a stroke of bad luck
Sometimes...but reflows don't generally last any longer then the washer fix.

@@theguywhoasked6104 I tried changing the power supply as well but still doesn't work. I am depressed. I don't know what to do? How do I sell a broken ps4??
Just like the red ring of death from the Xbox 360, likely using a heat gun and press to reinstall the chip and putting protection seal on the board. Don't drill or pierce the board because of internal wiring.
Don't you think it's strange how this issue is in every console nowadays and it's never fixed in the design?
This is the first, honest video that I've found about a ps4 slim basically saying my blue light of death is practically unfixable. Everything else I've tried hasn't worked, and now finding this video almost makes me want to put the nail in the coffin so to speak of my ps4.......
So, you're telling me I should not buy a new power supply?
I'm on the fence , about to buy it but if that's not the problem and the chip like you say , I'm screwed.
I bought a nEw lower supply, and that's was just a waste of money.
I’m really disappointed there was only bad news but still a great video😮💨
Very great content indeed, but one thing that I think was missed is that a failing hard drive can also be a cause for the BLOD. I was thinking my ps4 was toast after watching this but come to find out I replaced my hard drive and my ps4 is working like new again.
It's kinda weird to thank you being this sad after know what's happening to my ps4, but at least I know...
Gosh.. i dont see this problem on ps2...😒
More expensive, more "power" and more problem..
Alex Barnes nailed it😂😂
can't wait to see what problem will occur on ps5😏
Same problem happened with the PS3...YLOD
Solder cracks happen because the solder shrinks and expands a lot if the difference of temperature between the APU and ambient is big,
So keep your console as cool as possible.
Also the higher the clock speed the shorter the life of the silicon chip:
PSX: 33.9MHz
PS2: 299 MHz
PS3: 3200 MHz
PS4: 1600 MHz
PS4 Pro: 2130 MHz
Every silicon chip is bound to die one day...
Power Play and that is just an horrible truth😔
Mohd Haziq Baharudin when your expanding that much it’s almost impossible to have full control, that goes true for almost everything, networks, countries, security, and even your own body

Playstation V Could be just cheap solder. Sony used lead free solder with the PS3 and that was the biggest problem for overheating.
PS3 HAD D SIMMILAR PROBLEM ON THE FHAT VERSIONS IT WAS BETTER THEN THE SLIM AND THE SUPER SLIM I SEE THATS NOT THE CASE ON THE PS4

🔴🔴Hello everyone. I have a similar issue with my PS4. When I turn on the console, the blue light turns on for 3 seconds and then it goes off..what could be the reason and solution for that. Help? 🔴🔴
My PlayStation just turned off randomly and doesn't want to turn on. When it does it flashes the blue light but then turns off again
Very high
i think its the lead free solder thats the problem.
That's a common theory.
It sure is if it was leaded solder this problem would have never happend in the ps4 BLOD and on the ps3 YLOD if i could use a bga i would use lead solder on any chip.
Get a pc instead.
why dont these people learn man every new 1st day console has solder ball cracks why dosent sony learn from their mistakes comon sony
Dan the great tbf I've had no problems with my Console I have the 1215A version for 5 years and have had not a single problem 😂😂
Hey Steve lets team up and figure out a way to fix the BLOD on PS4 slim, Pro and 12XX consoles with the washer method.
Hi Fasttech! I've tried it on all of those consoles but haven't had any luck. Have you guys tried it?
Tried the washer method with a 1215A and a slim PS4 with no luck.
Perhaps there needs to be a backplate enforcement that goes along with the washers to make it work like it does on 1000 and 1100 units.
Did you guys try washing it off?

Nick .h that’s my problem to
Ok, I actually fixed a PS4 with BLOD with penetrating oil.
How come nobody discusses the "no light of death"?
All you have to do is simple maintenance which means open it up and blow some compressor air into it and that will prevent future damage but no one does it
simply changing the power source worked for me.
what does that mean? change the ps4 wire plugs?
I'm shocked , you would think these consoles have been built better than the previous generation

Update: i sent it to sony in november and got a new one
Inept Jedi This exact thing happened to my launch ps4
BLOD can also be caused by a bad hard drive. Recently my PS4 had a BLOD, I suspected a bad hard drive was the cause so I replaced the hard drive, reinstalled the system software and is now working perfecty, of course I have to download all the games again.
What was yours doing? Did it show a white light then go to a blinking blue light with a black screen?
Just ran into this problem today after it was unplugged for a few weeks. The thing was stuck at the login screen and wouldn't sync with a controller, and eventually froze and shut off. Then the BLOD, wouldn't get to the recovery menu. I slapped the top of the thing, and it's working fine right now. Is it possible just smacked a solder joint on the APU back in place, or is it some other issue?

My ps4 randomly started breaking down. Games were slower, clicking on menus took forever, games would crash, freeze, and then the ps4 started turning off with software errors and corruption errors I believe. Now it doesn’t turn on after I fully inilatisied it, it does the blue light of death. Sometimes the PlayStation logo shows up, then just blackness. Very frustrating I haven’t even used it for more than 7 months
my ps4 just blue lights and then turns off immediately
It’s probably the power supply or the apu
I have an off topic question if you dont mind. I am going to change the thermal pads on the ram. I know they are 1mn thick. A good friend says he did this, and used fugipoly extreme pads. After replacing all 16 cut 10x10 and 1 mm thick
After he put it together he got the 3 beeps, of course his apu wasnt making contact.
Should I buy a ps5 ,can only imagine it's problems to come
@Alex Burton It's Sony. They won't. Microsoft had quite the learning curve, if you compare X360 and XOne, Sony didn't.
loved this video and the other videos you done in the past. I wanted to know on the older ps4 if the two screws keeping the power supply down were loose can that cause the disk drive to not respond?
Thanks! No that won't cause the disc drive to not respond. Check your large, wide ribbon cable.
TronicsFix LLC thanks I'll check it out just repaired the overheating problem yesterday
My ps4 slim was working like a charm and then one day it just wouldn't respond the way it should, and the ps4 would crash and won't turn off properly and it won't render game's like it used to, any advice and actions i should do???? Please help
Same thing here. How did you fix it?
That goes for ps3's as well. Same process.
If anyone would like a detailed description or video feel free to message me. Cheers
This seems Common... I have a different problem. When I turn it on, the blue light turns on, dims, then gets brighter, then the system shuts off. It does this in 3 seconds after turning the system on.
