Mr. Collins, once again, you have “struck gold.” You have handled an important subject matter with your intelligent, well-spoken, humorous, friendly demeanor. In one of your previous videos, when you first purchased your C8, you took it on to a back road, put it in launch control, and took off. Once you were finished. You said you had to take a break to collect your thoughts because you weren’t expecting that. You were overwhelmed. The look on your face said it all, “I’m really gonna have to be responsible and careful with this machine; or else there could be some bad damage done.” GM claims that for the first time in decades, the average age of a C8 Corvette buyer is younger than previous models, with many buyers in their 20s, 30s, and 40s. These individuals, once they get seduced by the car, the sound, and the engine; they unfortunately over drive the car’s capabilities; which is tough to do because Corvettes are purpose built to make you look like a superior driver and save you when you make a mistake. Many accidents, many fatalities. Keep up the great standard in your videos.
Not to pick on one car, but in reality every car has it's point of no return. Even the old term mom and pops 4 door sedan could be a death trap in the wrong hands. And since it has always been any fool with enough money can buy themselves a death trap. There is no substitute for experience and common sense. Seat of the pants feel is a very real thing.
Totally agree. I’ve owned two Corvettes and a Mustang GT and a Challenger RT a G37 coupe. All of these cars are as safe as any on the road if driven reasonably. I’m 72 now and i recognize my reflexes are not what they used to be so I’ve altered my driving accordingly. Still have fun on the road but within new limits. I think some people exceed their limits or the car’s and then it’s curtains.

I've got one of the C8s and I must say that the ultimate capability of the car is beyond mine, but you just have to know (and obey) your limitations. THAT is where the danger comes in. The driver, NOT the car and there is no cure for stupid. Thanks for posting this.
I absolutely agree with you. As the owner of several exotic cars and having raced cars in the quarter mile in the late 60s early 70s I always state that the problem with modern day exotic cars is they all the driver into a false sense of security about their driving ability. In the words of the infamous Clint Eastwood, “a man’s got to know his limitations.“ most people who compete in sports, especially golfers, taking into consideration the conditions of the terrain. Motorcycle enthusiasts, people who race cars on a track and other sports enthusiast have to consider the terrain. Unfortunately, when you don’t consider road conditions and limits of your abilities to adapt to an exceptional event, people get injured or die. This is true whether you’re a pilot or season driver like Paul Walker, the external conditions can lead to tragedy. even Daly drivers who are driving somewhat benign cars need to never let the car get ahead of their comfort and caution zone. I truly liked your video because it draws attention to the fact that you can truly enjoy a sports car without taking it beyond the drivers capability. The sound, the drive, the ride should be enough without tempting fate. Good job. Keep up the good work. God bless.
Sounds like the effect in aviation we call "More cash than log book." People who can buy a high-performance machine but have no business operating it. Mid-engine (and rear engine) cars are a Doppler-shifted other universe. Vette faithful accustomed to front engine chassis dynamics are in for rude surprises when they suddenly have the polar moment of inertia of a humming bird, but no experience with such things. Same story as the original 930 Porsche back in the '70s. Great video, by the way. Loved the artsy camera work in the open. I sub'd just for that. Cheers.
I had the chance to drive a Z06 in Vegas with ExoticsRacing. Goodness gracious that is an incredible car. That motor and the way it delivers power is just incredible. Enjoy.
The Ron Fellows course is worth every penny. Lots of track time (including braking, launch control, stability control, all on a track with lots of turns to practice approaches & follow throughs), introductions to the electronics, and chats with other attendees. Informative and fun. Enjoy the course, Brian!
Very well done. I had 375 HP in a 73 Chevy Vega. That was a monster and nobody was allowed to drive it except for me. You handled the Vette quite well and spoke the truth about power/speed versus driver capability. I just subscribed because of your ability to sort it all out.
I recall taking out my c8 stingray for the 1st time and hitting the gas pedal. I learned real quick to respect that power, mess around and I'll be the spirit realm 😂
The C8 is so cheaply made too much China plastics and electronics. I have been working at the Corvette plant for 20 years and we all agree the best built corvette was the LS3 C6. Everything after is Gov mandate junk. I can bet your C8 will be a junkyard car in 15 years. The cylinder deactivate tech in the C7 and C8 is not going to hold up.
Really enjoyed your video. Great voice and screen presence. I have a 2022 C8 and have been to Ron Fellows. This car has way more ability than I do. I drove as fast as I could for 2 days then got the same experience everyone else did. I got to be a passenger to a professional driver. Talk about humility. I love my C8 but know my limits will never match what the car can offer. Occasional spirited driving is fun... just know your own limits.
TAKE GM UP ON THEIR $1K OFFER TO ATTEND RON FELLOWS CORVETTE OWNER’S SCHOOL! My ‘24 C8 is my 1st Vette. LOVE IT! This video is spot on with the assessment. For those that don’t know, with every new purchase of a C8, GM includes a voucher to attend Ron Fellows Performance Driving School out near Las Vegas for only $1000 (regular price is $3695). This includes 2 days of instruction, not just on the track, but in every day driving of the C8. We’re talking antilock brake exercises, skid pad exercises, 0-60 exercises , and yes track & autocross exercises. It also includes meals & your stay at the luxury condos on site. You will learn what the C8 can do and how to handle its capabilities in every day driving as well. Best thing about it is that you get to learn on, and abuse, THEIR cars! Every C8 owner should take this course!
Hi Gerard, greetings from Canada! You've bought an amazing car that is only dangerous in the wrong hands. I have a 2021 C8, with about 7,000 Km (4,000 miles) on it. I don't drive it much, as it's the 5th car in a household of just myself and my wife. In Canada we all put our C8's away for the winter, it's a summer car only up here. To me, it's the best value for the money, and if you drive it within your capabilities, it's a safe car. I agree, it's driver error that gets people who have no business owning this car in trouble. Great video! cheers
This video hits the nail on the head! It's a combination of performance and price that attracts inexperienced drivers. In fact, the 911 would be #1 on the most dangerous list if it were less expensive. As we all know, the 911 has some quirky handling issues when pushed above 80%.
@@BucketWheat That's because the engine in a 911 is in the wrong place! People overlook the Cayman which is a rear mid engine car that's been for sale since 2005. No, I don't hate Vettes, owned 2. Now I'm on my second Cayman. It's all you need on the street, has a manual transmission if that's what you like and is beautiful. The C-8 is an ugly car....IMHO....😂🤣Bring on the hate!
Back in the 80s, yes. Today? No. 40 plus years of development have essentially cured the Porsche’s ills completely. Or do you believe that the GT3RS isn’t an absolute track weapon?
Excellent presentation! I recently rented a C8 through TURO as a birthday gift for my 14 y.o. son who loves corvettes. It truly is a magnificent car to drive and behold!
Having driven a Corvette for 12 years I can attest to the fact that you are correct. Anyone who gets behind the wheel needs to have a healthy respect for the power under their feet. failure to do so will result in crashed lives. end of story. Thanks Gerard.
@@musolini5708 I think the person is referring to the fact that the Nissan was outperforming most cars, including Ferraris at the 500 HP mark. This, by extension, this is also holding its own while also having the appearance of a sports car.
I’m 74 years old and at 16 I purchased my first corvette, a 1958 for $1,000. Since then I’ve had more Corvettes than I can remember. My last Corvette was a new 2018 mostly loaded that was so powerful it would spin the rear wheels making it a very precarious ride. None of my Corvettes have been automatic. In 1999 I purchased a 1965 Porsche 356C that I still own and cherish followed by a 1982 Porsche 911. Neither of which are automatics. Both of my Porsches stick to the pavement like glue. While I’ve not owned a newer Porsche, I’ve driven a few newer Porsches. The most impressive was a 2020 Porsche 911C4S Turbo with a manual transmission. There is no comparison between the Corvette and a well equipped 911. They won’t slip and slide unless you are on wet pavement or driving like a lunatic. Both cars however, Corvettes and Porsches are a blast!
I think this is the best description of the C8 Corvette I’ve ever read. I loved the comparison to the GTR. The comparison I’m going introduce is patently unfair, but just for fun: The 1999 Suzuki Hayabusa! 460 lbs, 190 hp, 0 to 60 - 2.5 seconds, 200 mph. See, I told you it’s not fair 😱🤣
Outside the corvette museum in bowling green Kentucky there are 2 maybe 3 signs that say “no burn outs” right before you exit onto I-65 . People are so excited to get their new corvette and end up losing control before they get on the interstate. It’s not the car, it’s the people!
Or driving a boat. In FL we get rich guys whose 1st boat is a monster and they don't go to the marine squadron school. A boat should require a license just like a car.
It is actually a good instructor, teaching mediocre drivers that sitting behind the wheel of a world class car doesn't make them world class drivers. We have a road in my neck of eastern TN that teaches motorcycle riders on high performance motorcycles the same lesson.
Your 100% spot on! It’s all about the Skills behind the Wheel!!! A good wheel man can out drive and make anyone look like a fool that has a more expensive and faster car than his! My first car was a Datsun 260z at 16yrs old. I’ve basically have been on a track all my life since that first car. I’ve made fools out of people who have had a lot nicer and faster rides than myself while driving just a regular car. Nice ride my friend. I’ve got a 2014 Vette tucked away in my barn that I break out every once in awhile when I get that itchy right foot! Stay safe!
Driver error is definitely the issue, especially when you factor in the mid engine physics. Most people are caught off guard by it. The C8 is one of best cars I've ever driven... Chevy does provide a Driver's school for customers. Maybe it should become mandatory 😅
Our local Harley dealer has a large, paved lot where they hold riding/handling sessions with groups of their owners, perhaps potential buyers, most Saturday mornings. Great idea! So with C8s, auto crossing on a large lot can really tell you where the masses are in your car. I'll bet a bunch of C6, 7 guys would show up too!
We traded in our 2008 C6 3LT convertible with a manual transmission for our 2023 3LT HTC non Z51 with performance exhaust and many other options. The C8 is the best vehicle this 76yo has ever driven and it’s much faster than our C6. Although it handles better than the C6 did, it is easy to get yourself into trouble when pushed too hard. Great video, I see your HTC is like ours as it looks and feels like you are going much faster when actually we would never want to exceed the posted speed limit. It’s fun driving a vehicle that is very smooth when you want it to yet capable of VERY spirited driving when you need it to unwind.
I have quite a bit of HPDE experience, i have driven 7 different road course race tracks in my prior sports cars and when I turn off all electronics in the C8 I really have to focus when driving hard on public roads and I’m very aware of tire temps. I can easily understand how someone with no track experience could get in trouble if they turn off all electronics because i find it challenging with all aids turned off when pushing hard. My prior car was a stickshift boxster S and i could really push that car hard confidently and i never drove it once with electronic aids on, even on cold tires. The C8 is the first sports car i have owned that i ever left the electronic aids on. I leave them on maybe half the time i drive the C8 just trying to avoid some simple mistake when I’m not 100% focused.
I made the comment elsewhere - US car makers are still way behind in producing a car that handles predictably and safely. It has always been that way, and I see nothing changing.
An excellent, thoughtful, and concise review of the driving considerations of the C8 Corvette. His wise recommendation? Don't drive like a fool! Thanks for your poignant assessments.
I am old enough to remember the emergence of the Yuppie culture in the 1980s, and clearly recall that many brand-new Porsche 911s were being wrecked, often on the drive home from the dealer (!) Inexperienced (and over-enthusiastic) new drivers were discovering the meaning of "Trailing-throttle oversteer" while attempting to negotiate an onramp at 70 mph.
Great video !! I am a big Corvette fan. I agree with most of what you said. I agree that accidents happen because people push the car beyond their limits ... specifically the driver's abilities. Not necessarily beyond the cars abilities. Because most people who drive them on the road, are not able to even reach anywhere near the car's abilities. We just have people that think they are in control ... then the worst happens ... Drive safe everyone !! :))
I absolutely love my 2022 C8 Z51. It is a lot of car for most of us, and most of us think we are better drivers than we actually are! LOL I love your back road run. Well put together!
You are correct sir. The danger is the driver and their temptation to test themselves and fate with the car. Almost all of us are not race car drivers for sure. Then there is that nagging thing that, "Fear is Never Boring. " Sometimes it just won't buff out.
You are a great content creator! I remember years ago where the Porsche 944 had a reputation for giving drivers too much confidence and therefore driving beyond their abilities. There are plenty of RUclips videos of people driving high horsepower cars and wrecking them because of a lack of experience with race car level performance.
Bravo sir! Rational and logical commentary. I wouldn't think twice about a Vett's safety , but I would the driver. That said, if I was Hyundai, I'd be seriously looking into why one of my cars was number one on the list.
I haven’t driven a C8 but from what I’ve seen and read I’d say you are spot on. Like many cars that handle incredibly well, like the C8, they should be inherently safer. But, if you put that much power into the hands of an untalented or ignorant driver, sadly they WILL get into trouble.
You did so much justice to this car in the intro...the beginning shots are so gorgeous, but then some angles it just isn't beautiful. But at the price point, I'll love that face any day of the week! I think you are so spot on in your assessment.
This video popped up. You’re 100% correct! You sir are a very smart man. Great video and people should she this, it’s not the car it’s the driver and the car can kill you, if you’re not the correct driver with experience.
Drive with common sense. I am a retired state trooper here in Florida. In over thousand speed stops I had only one Corvette stop and that was just a warning., not a ticket. I found that Corvette owners always drove the speed limit. The people that own Corvettes are responsible people. Very polite and nice.
Preach! All owners or would ne owners of performance cars need to see this video. Any car can get in trouble with driver error. Hyundai Venue? I was falling off my chair. But it does look top heavy. and most likely suffers from the opposite problem of the C8- it's performance envelope is so small you can exceed it driving normally.
Though it was a short video ,it was one of the most informative videos on the new c8 Corvette .a lot of people are probably looking at getting an e-ray or z06 not realizing that the regular c8 has more than enough power unfortunately I do understand there's a lot of people who are looking at the ZO6 because of the Ferrari like sound and that's completely understandable
Absolutely, people aren’t used to that kind of power to weight ratio much anymore. In addition, something you did not mention was the rear or mid engine factor. When I was younger and just started driving the 911s turbo was terrorizing the roads but people tried to take it off the highway because of crashes that were happening. I drove one of these beasts and what a rush! But the dealer warned both my Dad and I to NOT let up dramatically on the throttle in any kind of corner or when changing lanes. He told us the car would fishtail and or spin around out of control so fast and possibly crash because of inertia. That car had less horsepower but similar power to weight ratios. Draw your own conclusions! I believe there maybe a similar phenomenon happening
Everything you said is correct. Let me add this: It is a MID-engine car, so it has a rear weight bias. Mid-engine cars drive great UNTIL you get to the limits of their cornering ability. Then they get tricky for the average driver. MOST people who move up from lesser cars to this C8 probably have no experience driving a mid-engined car at the limit of cornering grip. When they get to the car's cornering limit and do something wrong, this car may oversteer more so than a front-engine car and they're in big trouble. This car and the rear-engine Porsche 911 are similar in this regard: Absolutely fantastic and fun up to 8/10s of its limits, but requiring expert attention and control at 9/10s to 10/10s of its limits.
I actually find that in factory alignment and on the PS4s you tend to get quite a bit of understeer. I think this car either needs to be setup for track alignment which is quite a camber adjustment and is hard on the tires for street driving or it needs a little more adjustment to the spring rates to soften the front a little, possibly a stiffer sway bar in the rear. There is just something "off" about it and I don't think it's the mid engine design. I never get that same feeling with the Mclaren. I suspect part of this is GM dialing in that understeer because untrained people panic brake and that is more likely to result in them regaining control than if they oversteer which requires more skill to correct. On Porsches 993s were the worst. Understeer to oversteer in the blink of an eye if you weren't careful. They definitely improved a lot since then, the 992 is pretty easy to drive
The biggest thing I would say is, having a similar amount of tenure as older and wiser, we agree on even complex things like, being stupid is expensive. I for one got the receipts, like most will. One thing about Vettes, everyone loves them, look awesome and then you wide in one. Still cool, but, I don't want one. That's been my story - But the C8 changed everything, and now my challenge is finding an amicable agreement with management on asset acquisitions 😆
😅I recently had the opportunity to drive one on an actual closed course racetrack. The handling and performance are phenomenal. It corners like it's stuck to the pavement and the acceleration will literally jam you back into your seat.
I have a C7 Stingray. I absolutely agree with you on driver error. Driving a performance vehicle takes an honest assessment of your driving skills. Ego checked at the door. So many dudes are unable to do this.
Couldn't agree more. As a retired race car driver, I say if you want to go fast, there are plenty of track days available to have fun and not put anyone else in danger
YEP I agree. I love the Corvette have owned 3 of them ( All C3s ) but the driver has got to treat this car with respect. Even the older ones were always the fastest thing GM made every year of production .
Backroad spirited motoring can be safe and is definitely fun. The temptation is always to push the limit, but once found you should obviously recognize the warning signs and drive below that. I wonder if the C8 corvette limits are vague, many cars are, and the car let's go with little warning. You are looking for a scrub, squeal, and squirm well before the car lets go. Sometimes the right tires can help with this. Also, inching up on the limit through multiple sessions and finding the warning signs, so you know what to look for, is prudent. Be safe out there.
Excellent and accurate comments. I’ve been driving for a very long time, and have owned many different types of vehicles. I have had some professional training, I have worked at becoming a better driver and I believe driving like any skill requires practice and effort. I don’t think a fast car is dangerous, but I don’t think it’s possible to drive fast in and around slower moving vehicles, on city roadways with average drivers. It’s obviously an accident waiting to happen if you drive a powerful car fast, on a roadway with limited top speed. Driving amongst other vehicles, other drivers which may have limited skills and no collision avoidance ability.
Agree 100% - just because you can afford one doesn't mean you have the skill or experience to drive it like a movie stuntman. A fast, sporty car will seduce people into believing they do.
I think your assessment is spot on! The car is just a beast. A beast that must be controlled by a competent driver. It can get away from you in the blink of an eye.
@@brettrun8575 There nothing wrong with my ego I'm 75 and don't have anything to prove. My point is that a driver should know how to drive a car like this on public roads. If that sounds cocky then fine.

Cheers.
Just got here by chance. I love this guy. Intelligent, great sense of humor.
On Monday, I will be at the Ron Fellows Corvette School to learn how to properly drive my Z06…
I had the chance to drive a Z06 in Vegas with ExoticsRacing. Goodness gracious that is an incredible car. That motor and the way it delivers power is just incredible. Enjoy.
Get the Rapid blue car. It’s faster
Ron Fellows will teach you how to drive if ever you are the getaway driver! Don't hold back. So much fun.
Learn how to speed and drive recklessly? Got it.
Stay on a track please.
The Ron Fellows course is worth every penny. Lots of track time (including braking, launch control, stability control, all on a track with lots of turns to practice approaches & follow throughs), introductions to the electronics, and chats with other attendees. Informative and fun. Enjoy the course, Brian!
I really like this guy. Honest and interesting format.
Very well done. I had 375 HP in a 73 Chevy Vega. That was a monster and nobody was allowed to drive it except for me. You handled the Vette quite well and spoke the truth about power/speed versus driver capability. I just subscribed because of your ability to sort it all out.
I have to give it to you. Great discussion and Great video editing.
As proud owner of a 2023 C8 Corvette I agree with you totally. That car has to be respected, don't drive it beyond YOUR ability and you will be ok.
Correct; ......and don't drive "any" car beyond your ability, (hence, the SUV that holds the top spot).
Great video. Simply love the looks of the new Corvett!
I'm scheduled for the May 3rd weekend of 2025 Corvette Z06.
You will have an absolute blast AND learn A LOT about your car!
It's a bit funny to spend a grand so you don't crash your new vette imo, but I guess it's nessacary with all the accidents!! Lol
Sounds like a solid bargain, plus an investment into your safe driving-future enjoyment of the super car!
Sticker on the GTO I had was around $3600.
Great video Gerard !
As an 'ol guy with a modded C6, I can relate to your driving style !!!!
Drive on brother !!! 👍🏼🇺🇸
Great video, Gerard!
Just think of how many HOLLYWOOD STARS have 'bit the bullet' in a Porsche... They could handle the PRICE, but not THE CAR...
Great to see someone driving a C8 the way it was built to be driven. Thanks for the great sights and sounds.
Excellent presentation! I recently rented a C8 through TURO as a birthday gift for my 14 y.o. son who loves corvettes. It truly is a magnificent car to drive and behold!
That intro was golden
The intro absolutely rules! So good.
Having driven a Corvette for 12 years I can attest to the fact that you are correct. Anyone who gets behind the wheel needs to have a healthy respect for the power under their feet. failure to do so will result in crashed lives. end of story. Thanks Gerard.
Spot on, again! He's an adult in the room pointing out that the C8 is an awesome car to have if you have reasonable behavioral self-control.
Well, said, sir, couldn’t agree with you more!!
Beautiful car, great honest video…Ferrari performance at 1/4 of the price and looks just as good!
Ferrari has nothing to do with it they are not the same
@@musolini5708 I think the person is referring to the fact that the Nissan was outperforming most cars, including Ferraris at the 500 HP mark. This, by extension, this is also holding its own while also having the appearance of a sports car.
@@musolini5708captain obvious over here
No.
They look goofy.

The car is not deadly, the driver is! Good video.
It’s not the car, it’s the people!
....your honesty begs the question.....just because you can afford doesn't mean you have any business driving it.....or flying it...........
Or driving a boat. In FL we get rich guys whose 1st boat is a monster and they don't go to the marine squadron school. A boat should require a license just like a car.
@ agreed. A boat in the wrong hands is a dangerous weapon…
I am a fan of the corvette and am looking to purchase one of the earlier models. Came across your video. Very well done and much appreciated.
Well said sir, I love the way you articulated the information.
It is actually a good instructor, teaching mediocre drivers that sitting behind the wheel of a world class car doesn't make them world class drivers. We have a road in my neck of eastern TN that teaches motorcycle riders on high performance motorcycles the same lesson.
This guy is unhinged.
That was a cool video! I am planning to get my C8 this year! I can't wait!
I subscribed after listening to your absolutely correct analogy of this iconic powerhouse.
Awesome viewpoint! 1st time seeing your channel and I'm 100% a fan. Keep it up bro.
I just found Mr Collins. Great video. Short and right to the point !!!
Video is spot on. Fun video to watch too. Very professional.
Very informative and well done. Way cool and you make the car look good!! A+
Great points! Ego + power = riskier behaviors (cars, politics, profession, etc.)
Great review! This man is grounded and understands what he is doing better than most.
Excellent analysis Gerard.
I haven’t driven a C8 but from what I’ve seen and read I’d say you are spot on. Like many cars that handle incredibly well, like the C8, they should be inherently safer. But, if you put that much power into the hands of an untalented or ignorant driver, sadly they WILL get into trouble.
Next big car reviewer right here! Excellent video!
Nice video.
Such a beautiful car.
Agree with you 100 percent. A car with that much horsepower is simply more than inexperienced drivers can control. Can't blame the car.
Sweet ride ! The Vette is a rocketship 😅.
Drive with common sense. I am a retired state trooper here in Florida. In over thousand speed stops I had only one Corvette stop and that was just a warning., not a ticket. I found that Corvette owners always drove the speed limit. The people that own Corvettes are responsible people. Very polite and nice.
I just found your videos. I like you and I like the video. Keep em up!
You have a little editing work to do, but such amazing production vision!!! I can't wait to see this channel grow!
First time watcher. Great video!
Agree, 100%. A weapon in the hands of a fool is a dangerous weapon. ❤
Your right a lot of people who get a car like this get into it and think they are invincible and can handle it but can't 😮
Great analysis. Beautiful car.
He’s a smart man. I really appreciate this video
Excellent video Gerald Thank you !
I absolutely agree with your assessments
Not to mention, it’s absolutely beautiful. every Corvette from the very first ones in the 50s were stunning cars.
This car is NOT deadly, It's the jerks that drive it. I have a C8 Coupe and am perfectly safe in it because I know how to drive this magnificent car.
Someone is sounding a little cocky. Be careful with your ego or it may get bruised.
@@brettrun8575 There nothing wrong with my ego I'm 75 and don't have anything to prove. My point is that a driver should know how to drive a car like this on public roads.
