My teacher always used to say, "If you give bad carpenters good tools, they ain't gonna do anything with it. But if you give good carpenters bad tools, they're gonna do good things."
You did a really great job! I've been an artist for many years, and I've seen many different art supplies and fads come and go. However, kids supplies, will always be available, so much filler and very little pigment in cheap watercolours hasn't changed over the years. Pencils, crayons, and the old fashioned felt tipped pens were a Christmas standard gift when I was little. I started at 3, at 13 I'd completed my Art O level gaining a 1 (now British GCSES) I completed it 2 years early. As a gifted child I'd completed my A level gaining an A which ment I was in Art University at the age of 16! 4 years ahead of time. My Grandparents bought me my first full set of everything I needed in a wooden box. Royal and Langnickel saw me though most of the fast track years, that lead to my Art and technology degree. In the last year of my degree, my family clubbed together and I received a full set of expensive artist grade paints, pencils etc. When my Father died when I was 14 my Mother couldn't afford to buy expensive products. So I used second hand and such for many years. My art teacher at school who started me fast tracking, occasionally dropped supplies into my school bag. I remember crying over a packet of 6 Cotman watercolour tubes that he had kindly gifted me. My Grandmother saw me, and it was that, that spurred her on to buy the wooden case. Which was filled regularly throughout those years. So yes, I've used cheap, and, some rather nasty supplies. Now, by choice, I buy good supplies, scouring the Internet to pick up bargains.
i didn’t know you could take o level art at 13, I’m 15 & I’m struggling with it now preparing for next year lmao (though I’m not British) you must be good for being able to do it 2 years early
Magical Bevanna I definitely agree with you. Those who uses Amazon or other websites read the review never rely on star ratings. Just only read about two-three reviews, and preview the features especially the specifications of the product second. Also always price match for the best prices. Also use any art supplies for painting and drawing.
ITS SO GOOOOOOD HOWWW????? me and my friend watched this and we cried and screamed throughout the whole thing because ITS SO FRIKIN AMAZING FYUFTYDTHYJFTHFTJGJT WE LOVE YOU! we are jealous of your talent xD
it looks so much like Percy Jackson!!!!!!! if only it said Camp Half-Blood on the hoodies with a little pegasus or something and the eyes were more green then it would be the perfect Percy!
I really love that you took the time to defend inexpensive art supplies so that beginners do not feel priced out of creating good art. I myself use windsor and newton cotman colors which are comparatively rather inexpensive. I also use mechanical pencils to draw with, the regular ones you can find for school supplies. You can find different hardness leads on amazon for very little. Strathmore makes watercolor journals with rather decent paper for only $6usd. you really can find art supplies to suit your needs on any budget.
Omg with these supplies you are STILL better than me. I just use a normal mechanical pencil, and a few small ones two along with watercolor, sharpie, and colored pencils.
Can you make a real time video? I really want to know how to use watercolours but all the tutorial videos on RUclips does not help at all. I just need to see a full process to actually learn something QAQ
You need them depending on the situation. If you want to do art professionally and sell it, or at least work without having so many issues that frustrates you, a cheap watercolour, oil paint, gouache that isn't light-fast won't do it. Even if he's a great artist with high level skills the result was still pretty bad compared to his other artworks. But as he said as long as you don't go too cheap like if it's a joke (Since even if it works it will slow you down a lot.) you can manage to improve your skills with anything. You shouldn't just say this or that is the lesson. It can be invalidating the other one.
Art =/= supplies and how much money you put into it. Art is about applying skills and unique concepts to your piece to make it original. Keep up with it. I've been at it for four or five years now and it's shown me that it isn't how much money you spend, it's about how much time you put into learning.
I really enjoy these challenges because they have a strong message. I see many people obssessed about brands, and quality and they feel they need those to create something good. In my case, I can't afford top brands, but I've been using van gogh watercolors and they look amazing if you work with them carefully. Also, one of my favourite brushes came from a dolar shop, and I'm really surprised it hasn't lost the pointed tip yet, while I had to throw away others from art shops. Are you planning to do any other challenge? I loved the picture. See you :) P.D: I laugh a lot with the RIP pencil moment xD
Thank you for your nice feedback >u< van gogh colors are great, I wouldnt have started painting with watercolors if I hadn't found them like 8-9 years ago xD I am planning to do the 3 marker challenge x) but also some others when I find somethin interesting >u
I know I'm pretty late but this is amazing! You probably got a lot of comments saying this but it looks life Percy Jackson. Also did anyone hear the hanging tree from the hunger games in the background
They say that "A bad craftsman blames his tools for shoddy workmanship" but you've proven that even the worst tools can be made to create stunning pieces like this. :) Bravo!
I agree that the cheapest art supplies aren't that great to use, especially brushes, but I will say. The difference between say crayola and prismacolor is outstanding. Anyone can still make beautiful art with cheap art supplies but the more expansive supplies usually make it easier, give a slightly cleaner products and they save a lot of time in my opinion. I still use the cheap stuff because I'm a broke college student, but when my birthday comes around I always ask for the more expensive supplies.
First off, that was beautiful! I recently came across your channel and I adore your art style!! In terms of cheap art supplies, one of my least favorite things about cheap watercolors is that once you add in more than 2 layers, everything ends up looking like a chalky blob instead of seeing the blending/individual colors (haha)
You should make another video with the supplies you used when you started (The ones you showed in the end of the video). Love the video btw! I'm using pretty cheap watercolor pencils but their quality is stll pretty good. It's a bit sad that many people immediately buy hundreds of dolars worth of supplies thinking that this is the only way.
also watching you pick up the wet black paint with your dry brush to give the hair highlights was satisfying AF. thanks for teaching me a new technique
I'm a begginer artists, so a lot of the supplies I buy are relatively cheap. I'm slowly working my way to use better quality products. But seeing you create something that amazing with really cheap quality supplies, shows that the supplies are just a small part of making great art. You are amazing! Thank you for this awesome video!
When I was little and know nothing about art, my parents and aunts would often buy me cheap art supplies which I love so much. I ended up wasting it by drawing and coloring weird shapes with it. But that was a long time ago. In the end, I rarely use any art supplies like what I used at that time. I would either use Copic and drawing pens or try to draw digitally. But I do plan on learning to use water color. ^^
Honestly inspirational, certainly a quality difference between this and your usual work but comparing to what it could have been you did such a good job!
I was actually in a runt to stop drawing cause I got frustrated with the cheap supplies I had but this video was really amazing to watch and absorb thank you so much! You're the master at this lol!
your work makes me want to improve on my own and take the 5 or 6 years to practice and get way better. but with me being 17 and college right around the corner plus the job..I just don't see when I'd have the time to just sit down and practice for a little while. plus my parents keep trying to warn me about the whole "starving artist" thing..but art is my passion,I love it.
I believe that the artist makes the materials not the other way around. You don't have to have the most expensive stuff to create amazing art; proven by your video, but the cheapest isn't always the best. I started out with median price range things and I was fine. The materials don't make the artist, they aid the artist. The skill makes the artist.
Wow, this was awesome! Despite the fact you used crappy supplies you still managed to make something awesome :D Where I am, it's hard to find good art supplies because it's not a common place to ship to. When there is something good, it's super expensive, so artists like myself have to learn to make okay quality stuff out of the worst of supplies unless you're ready to splurge all your money on overseas/different states stuff.
Wow. you make me wanna use the color pencils I bought for something like 20 yuans in China. I was scared to try them... but actually they are not the cheapest I could find here. let's give them a chance.
wow.. how do you use watercolor without having it blur? I am such a noob with watercolor and everything that can blur. I am always fastcinated by the progress of art with different suplys. I am stuck with my pencil sketches. :'D
Some years ago I did find the very same set of pencil colours here in Italy. "RIP pencil" is just what I'd say about those too. As soon as I saw the container I knew how unlucky you were going to be. As for the rest, great job with those materials, I hope I can learn more from you. :)
OMG! I just bought that same set of watercolours from my local Halpa Halli (Finnish store), for 2.75€. I have seen this video before, but i didn't remember it was the same set. I am excited, even tho it doesn't really matter.
Ah, I remember when I was starting out, I used a $5 watercolor set. It actually served me pretty well, even though it had a lot of bad reviews by others. After three years, I switched to Holbein 48 tubes. Still appreciate my old set.
Thank you for pointing out that you don't have to buy the most expencive stuff. I love the brushes from Pelikan for children. ❤ They even have a cap so I can throw them around without worring too much. XD
I used a cheap watercolor palette from Art Attack that came with a brush. The colors were pigmented when I use it, but I don't like the waxy texture when it's dry (on the pan) It's almost like plastic, and the brush hairs fall on my paint or on my painting, and I find it annoying. But I really don't mind using it once in a while.
Okay! This totally gives me the inspiration to try the cheap art supply challenge again and do my best so the new one gets better!: Amazing drawing even with cheap things you can make amazing art work*-*
I use always cheap art supplies, this expensive stuff is for hobby artists who firmly believe it makes them a superstar...hahaha, no where more silly people as in this Billion dollar market !!! Only need red, yellow , blue and titanium white, mostly have only , but to be not tooo much the scotchman I use burnt umber and siena too and paynes grey ... Only the skills are important and these are not a God given gift but the result of watching, thinking and learning and first of all DOING every day !!! And forget beginning learning with a digital painting program, I advice instead to work consequently through old stuff like the awesome studies of Charles Bargue....or doing it like Dalí, instead of lectures he visited the basement of the Prado in Madrid and copied old masters...all hard work and naturally the quantum esprit who makes you an original brand... Go ahead Laovaan !!! Good job !!!
Wauw! So beautiful! I do most of my work with colored pencil. And what i find out is with cheap colored pencil its hard to blend. With the polychromos i put on seven layers. With cheap i have diffeculties with ony two. I realy suck on drawing if i see so myself.
omg I hate kids paint. it is the worst paint to work with. XD Can't believe you did this on a first try. if this was me I would have to start over 3 or 4 times. The colors are like so ugly it's hard to brighten them. I hate cheap crayons too because they have more wax then actual pigments of color it's like trying to color with a candle dipped in koolaid. However I will say Kids sparkly paint or metallic works great for some odd reason. I use it all the time.
My teacher always used to say, "If you give bad carpenters good tools, they ain't gonna do anything with it. But if you give good carpenters bad tools, they're gonna do good things."
Wao
4 years late but...
Preach ✌🏻
Me with expensive art supplies: •Mediocre af•

LESSON:
You don't have to buy expensive art materials to be an amazing artist.
It was never true to begin with
All you really need to be a great artist is skill and practice. The supplies don't make the artist.
Headphones Girl Truth

Wait, your german? I thought you were japanese lmfao XD You're a good artist btw, keep it up :P
It doesn't show at all that the items were difficult to use. You did an amazing job it looks so good!
They say that "A bad craftsman blames his tools for shoddy workmanship" but you've proven that even the worst tools can be made to create stunning pieces like this. :) Bravo!
Reminds me of Noctis from Final Fantasy 15 :3
***** Same here I pre-order it and I can't wait :)
***** Yeah like ten years now and kingdom hearts is 5 years or so...I'm really glad that I'm a big fan of both the KH series and the FF series.

Percy. Frickin. Jackson.
"or you'll end up in this mess" bruh how can you say that "this" is a mess... it's a beautiful masterpiece ; v ; beautiful art... 💙☹
I agree that the cheapest art supplies aren't that great to use, especially brushes, but I will say. The difference between say crayola and prismacolor is outstanding. I love these kind of challenges
I'm a begginer artists, so a lot of the supplies I buy are relatively cheap. I'm slowly working my way to use better quality products. Out of the thousands of artists on RUclips, you are definitely my favorite.
Doesn't that look like gray?
I just love this challenges because they show how good art can be no matter which supply is used.
The art supplies or programs, doesnt really matter its the artist that matters (so freaking cheesy) , and this is beautiful
Honestly inspirational, certainly a quality difference between this and your usual work but comparing to what it could have been you did such a good job!
Percy? Is that you?
Love how you made this, it goes to show that you don't need the "best of the best" art supplies :3
All of your art is absolutely amazing! Stunningly beautiful no matter what kind of supplies you use. You have talent, something I wish I could have.
this legit looks like Percy...
It really does. 😱
That's what I was thinking. I've been scrolling through the comments trying to see if anyone else thought so
SAKE OMG I WAS LIKE DID ANYONE ELSE NOTICE THIS? NO? WELP YUP SOMEONE DID :"^

your work makes me want to improve on my own and take the 5 or 6 years to practice and get way better. but with me being 17 and college right around the corner plus the job..I just don't see when I'd have the time to just sit down and practice for a little while. plus my parents keep trying to warn me about the whole "starving artist" thing..but art is my passion,I love it.

Wow. you make me wanna use the color pencils I bought for something like 20 yuans in China. I was scared to try them... but actually they are not the cheapest I could find here.
let's give them a chance.
Your supplies may be cheap but your art is very much priceless.
XD when the pencil breaks, I hate that, that always happens to me at least once when I use a pencil or colored pencil. Nice work!
Love your art style! Gives a very square enix feel
wow.. how do you use watercolor without having it blur?
I am such a noob with watercolor and everything that can blur. I am always fastcinated by the progress of art with different suplys. I am stuck with my pencil sketches. :'D
Okay Laovaan, you sent me here. And how come you still able to do such majestic coloring using cheap art supplies? I'm so impressed.
No matter wtf you use for colouring or drawing, youe art is still amazing
he kinda looks like percy jackson
This video proves that even with worst resources, one can create a masterpiece
you did an awesome job! considering the cheap supplies, it turned out so good!
You are art goals for me right now (just learning.)
See, you don’t need expensive art supplies to make an amazing art piece
I am in love with your art!! You are so talented, thank you for sharing!!

LMAO 8:42 -ish "These pencils are really bad, even this cute mermaid picture cannot save them." I started dying at that point
I really want to try this challenge out too xD , the end result looks amazing !!
Congrats you are first!
The music in this video put me to sleep it's so relaxing
OMG! I just bought that same set of watercolours from my local Halpa Halli (Finnish store), for 2.75€. I have seen this video before, but i didn't remember it was the same set. I am excited, even tho it doesn't really matter.

I'd love to see you try out Yuumei's art on watercolours ! ovo
Thank you for pointing out that you don't have to buy the most expencive stuff. I love the brushes from Pelikan for children. ❤ They even have a cap so I can throw them around without worring too much. XD
You make cheap suplys looks like profesional. You're the best! :p
Even if it's cheap you still made it work. I can't find any watercolor paper here, so I just use illustration boards
I’m so happy I found your channel
You're AMAZING!!! I really love your draws, yours paints, all your jobs, i follow you since 2013 in DevianArt, you're Amazing. UvU
AM I THE ONLY ONE THAT THINKS THE BOY LOOKS LIKE PERCY J.???
I KNEW I WASNT THE ONLY ONE
lol thats the reason i clicked on the video cx
IKR!?
Sacha Tromp I'm a single fangirl. I see Percy, I click
Omg sammee
I used a cheap watercolor palette from Art Attack that came with a brush. The colors were pigmented when I use it, but I don't like the waxy texture when it's dry (on the pan) It's almost like plastic, and the brush hairs fall on my paint or on my painting, and I find it annoying. But I really don't mind using it once in a while.
Okay! This totally gives me the inspiration to try the cheap art supply challenge again and do my best so the new one gets better!:
Amazing drawing even with cheap things you can make amazing art work*-*
this came out amazing!
My worst experiences are mostly crayola honestly. I hate when cheap colored pencils look like cheap crayon instead.
Wow you make the cheapest things look awesome!
omg I hate kids paint. it is the worst paint to work with.
