I don't know why modern developers design rts games with PVP as the primary focus. I feel like back in the day developers aimed to make a good game holistically; and then a PVP scene grew more organically after players mastered the core mechanics and beat the campaigns.

      Agreed, it's completely insane.
Not only does focusing on PVP not work (we have loads of examples of that, sadly), but even if it *did* work to force-create a pvp scene, it would *still* be a stupid idea because by far the largest segment of the RTS market are... people who only play singleplayer.
So congratulations, you've optimised your game to cater for the tiny fraction of the market who want to play competitive pvp, and are... already deeply invested in their current games that they know how to play already, and most aren't going to switch. Meanwhile the giant's share of the market, who actually want new games because playing them single player is a much more consumptive process that needs a higher throughput of games, aren't being catered to.
Great job, devs! I'm sure this will totally work out great this time, unlike the dozens of previous times where it's crashed and burned! After all, look at all the *successful* games that did that! *Points at the precisely ZERO examples of games this strategy has worked for.*

Feels like devs these days rather wait till they get some backlash in order to make a full finished game it’s weird. It's because games today are designed to appeal to the majority, the majority don't have the experience of those 90s games anymore. They're generally casual gamers who just want to sit down and play something. As a result, pretty graphics are what'll attract them, not showing off fancy game mechanics, that stuff is what keeps the veterans around which are a smaller group.

I was super excited for this, and then played the demo. I knew afterwards I wouldn't like the game. Personally I think the gameplay is far too slow, mechanics way too simplistic and missions were boring. They did right by campaign with cinematics, voice acting and so on, but the gameplay distinctly felt like nobody play tested it for 'fun' rather than just bugs. It lacks the sort of X-factor of actions and missions that Dawn of War had. A real shame. i really wanted this to be cool.

I played the first two missions at Warhammer World. I felt like it had a solid foundation but really lacked a lot of quality of life features that would’ve extended the life of the game, in multiplayer and beyond.
I needed like a ‘fleet of foot’ skill and some visual elements to make things easier to read at a glance.
In about a year or a year and a half of updates I can imagine it being pretty good.
For me it felt more like DoW2 than DoW1 from what I played.

  • @greatbigeyeball

When they first revealed they were doing an AoS RTS it piqued my interest for sure, it looked at least on the surface like someone could pick up the reins from Blizzard and make a compelling big budget fantasy RTS. Then they started to slowly trickle out gameplay and you realize it's a 'tactics' rts with an incredibly tiny scope. Here's the thing - you want to make a fantasy RTS with no RPG mechanics? Sure. You want to make an RTS with minimal micro and unit controls? Sure. You want to make an RTS with no base building or resource management? Go for it. By why all three of these at once? There's nothing left to a game like this other than just walking units at flags and using abilities. I can't understand who this is for. Anyone who wants a game this simplified just doesn't play an RTS game imo.

I think one of the big problems AoS suffers from (lore wise) is that the realms are so massive that you could literally have anything in them. If a city in AoS is destroyed it doesn't really matter because there of likely tens of thousands more like them. Contrast that with Warhammer Fantasy, if say Middenheim or Praag were destroyed you'd think - oh we're in some serious shit now. If Tempests Eye was destroyed you'd think why does that matter?
The scale of AoS works both for and against it.

In the tabletop game I feel it's a different story. You care about the army you collected and painted because they're 'your dudes' (and the models are awesome). But with a standalone dramatic story that meant to have character growth, not really.

Too bad they didnt do much with the character development. Video games are a unique form of media because obviously you control the main cast itself and can therefore develop a much more meaningful bond with them, compared to a movie or show. The best example from an RTS game would of course be Prince Arthas from Warcraft 3, who's story became very well known and become the basis for the entire Wrath of the Lich King World of Warcraft expansion. The best bit was that what happened story-wise had actual very real gameplay consquenses, for example when the first campaign moved towards the second, keeping you in control of Arthas but lets say... under very different circumstances. This is the best element of good video game design: having the story interact with what you actually do in the game moment to moment. This really elevates the experience to becoming something far greater than the sum of its parts.

Watched a stream of a multiplayer game yesterday and it looked like it had the capture point mechanic from titles like CoH and DoW but the map itself was more laned as if it had been lifted from a moba. Taking the points didn't seem to do much and while it was visually decent with flashes and the like not obscuring units too much it looked slower that I'd expect from an RTS. Could be multiplayer padded for "balance" or could be they want folk to oooh and ahh the combat but games should be made to get played and not simply watched.
Nothing from watching the multiplayer side made me think I'd like the single which makes this a wishlist and wait for a sale

7:23 Warhammer manages to be the tricky portmanteau of High and Low Fantasy. They do this by establishing that for the vast majority of the human race, the most exciting thing they have to look forward to is extra corpse rations while working in the factories. Then you get the Space Marines, Eldar & Inquisitors, who get to go on gnarly adventures with more fantastical stuff.

no full roster of units, no flesh eater courts, no glotkin, no khorne, no dwarfs
its not the same game type but i always think of dow dlc 3 the dark crusade and about how much value for money it was, whole new game type with the story being the order that you just choose to play the game map in rather than linear missions, new factions, endless replayability, commander progression; and both the core game and the dlc combined never cost as much as this game does at early access pre release, but still manages to have way way less content

RTS was originally designed (and optimised) for PCs, mouse allowing you to handle both base management and jump in to micro the ongoing battles instantly. Yes, there are great RTSes developed specifically for consoles (Halo Wars) where they implemented systems to achieve similar results with controller shortcuts.
But a game designed to be used in BOTH ?!? That means smaller scale to be handled by controller will disapoint PC players, and interface not optimised for console players will frustrate them to no end ! Good job guys , you just made you lighthouse product unapealling to ALL potential customers, making more ghost money by charts instead of actually targetting an existing customer base. I can’t say I’m entirely disappointed to hear this not living up to the hype and full potential of this even tho I want it to. I was expecting this game to not be perfect but at least invigorate the feeling of Dawn of War again in an RTS. Sad to say but these days it feels like devs like these need to hear the criticisms on their product in order to make the product we all want, it’s weird but I guess I get it.
I still want to get this game because as harsh as some of the criticisms and rightfully so, I think there is still plenty reason to play and buy the game even if it’s lacking. I just hope the devs will listen and learn from the fans.

  • @ClassyHatsVT
    @ClassyHatsVT 11 месяцев назад +5

Ugh, it's so sad to hear that this wasn't all it was hyped up to be. I've been waiting for there to be an actual good Age of Sigmar game for a while now. Most of what we have are mobile games and turn-based strategy games, and a VR title. What I personally think would be really good would be a 3rd person action game where you play as a Stormcast Eternal, not unlike Space Marine.
Also Zade, you actually GET what made Stormcast Eternals interesting for me. Early on in the setting, they were very much the Space Marine stand ins with nothing else going on, but over time they really got more development that made them stand out from that. The effects of reforging are devastating, and it opens up so many story possibilities and actually gives people who are "immortal" real stakes in the story. In the demo, Sigrun was actually kind of reflecting on the loss of humanity from reforging in the cutscenes, which made me hope that she was a more experienced Stormcast Eternal that had been reforged a few times at this point. I was hoping that there would be a dynamic where she was more experienced and jaded, and Iden would be a lot fresher, and then we could maybe see them lose some of their humanity on the journey. Shame it doesn't look like that's how it panned out. If you haven't read it already, there's a nice little short story called "The Lightning Golem" that IS that story, it's also part of an anthology of short stories called "Myths and Revenants".

It's seems to me that GW focused a lot on creating nice game animations. When it comes to gameplay, what most people enjoy and pay for, it feels like that's where the issue is. Well it was always the issue with GW. I have been playing their tabletop games since 2003 and nothing has changed. Plus they charge a lot for less, just like their rulebooks. One good thing about all this is that I have learned to wait before buying games, rulebooks ect and wait until I get to read or see what they brought out. Concerning the game, maybe they should hire better devs for the gameplay and less toward story animations, perhaps it will sell more or convince people to buy.
