    It's worth noting that the Dune license that Westwood got ahold of was specifically for the 1984 David Lynch film, not the novels. They are treated as direct sequels to that film. So yes, David Lynch unintentionally is the godfather of the entire Real Time strategy genre and he probably doesn't even know it.

    • @noddy1973

      Sorta, Dune 2 art and designs have almost nothing shared with the Lynch film, it was until D2K that Lynch aesthetics were made a staple, like the beetle spice harvester

    • @emilioolivieri9978
      @emilioolivieri9978 3 месяца назад +1

      Cryo's Dune has more aesthetics from Lynch's film. Then Dune 2000 and Emperor are completely inspired by Lynch's film.

    I have played Dune 2, and the tactic that my father and I came up with was a Missile Launcher Square. You build missile launchers, and you send them as far towards the enemy base as it is possible to the nearest island over sand. You make a square out of them. Then you move each and every Launcher one square at a time (remember, no right-click to move, no select multiple units, but they did defent automaticly), moving the whole square towards the enemy base. Why? Missile launchers were very powerful but couldn't hit anything in the square adjacent to them, but the missile launchers in the second, third and fourth lines could. And because the enemy attacked in line, you basically had an undefeatable army that bulldozed through the enemy base. When Warcraft 1 had the ability to select 4 units, and Warcraft 2 could select 9 and right-click for any action. My mind was blown. But the undefeated square is still in my heart.

    • @Michauuu888
      @Michauuu888 3 месяца назад +1

      I like such tactics. With my brother, we often used to build "walls of tears" in Westwood games, or at least that's what we called it. In short, we built a chain of defensive towers with no gaps between them. Once they stretched from top to bottom or left to right across the entire map, it was time to start building towards the opponent. It was probably the best time spent with my brother in games in my life :D

    Dune is incredibly detailed... I literally went by accident to the Harkonnen's stronghold during a worm ride and there was a voice line like "You ain't gonna believe what happened... That stupid prince one day just showed up in front of our gate so we killed him all right!"

    • @fugitiveunknown7806
      @fugitiveunknown7806 3 месяца назад +2

      You can also grass up the Harkonen stronghold with plants, which skips the final battle and screws up the ending massively, but they do have a weird bit of graphics set up for if you try that.

    Dune: Spice Wars is an amazing game. WIth recent updates and added content it glues all of its elements well, while removing the boring aspect of it. There is always something to be done during the match.
    Don't let the average game lenght trick you though, after around 25-30 minutes the game turns into a stress management simulator.
    Would highly recommend.

    Warcraft 3 (the original version) sure holds up better in 2024 but Empteror Battle for Dune doesn't look bad when it comes to graphics. It just looks kind a plain because of the sand planet having no buildings, vegetation, civilian objects like cars that Red Alert and Tiberian Sun games have in the environment. It's really sad that it didn't get a Steam release together with Red Alert 2 and Tiberian Sun games.

    3:30 There was a game before Dune 2 "Utopia: The Creation of a Nation" it was the first? RTS, you did build your base, placed out house, tank factory's, solar panels, command center, mines, radar station, gun turrets etc. But the interface to move units was extremely clunky, you place numbers on the maps, and then tell the units to go to number 1, and units automatic attack enemy units in range.
    Because of technical limitations, there was no enemy base, and enemy units come from the map edge, and there was a special command that order your units to attack the enemy base, and your unit travel to the map edge and disappears. Later you get a spy report that tell, your that your attack was repulsed, or you did destroy the enemy base. It was more of a sim city game, because you won by rise the quality of life to a high level. by building hospitals, terraforming the air, destroying the alien base only stop alien raids.

    If you're going to do an in-deph review of Dune 2 and 2000, I suggest looking into console versions as well. Genesis and PS1 respectively. While also made by Westwood they look quite different from originals. They feel almost like separate games rather than ports. 2000 even seems to be in full 3D for better or worse. I never looked much into it, but always wondered why they were so different. In comparison, the first C&C game and Red Alert on PS1 looked much closer to PC versions.

    I like the first game but loved II, 2000, and Emperor. I actually only owned 2000 and Emperor but I play II at a friend of the family's house. I usually played as House Atreides or House Ordos. I'm not even sure I finished 2000 as House Harkonnen though I know I finished II and Emperor as them once or twice.
    At first I wasn't really interested in Spice Wars due to the lack of House Ordos but then I found out the game added House Vernius. I not as familiar with the post Frank Herbert Dune novels as the originals but from what I remember of the few new Dune novels I read before giving up on them like House Ordos House Vernius is known for playing fast and loose with the Imperium's absurd anti-technology laws (I know why those restrictions were made but IMO they went way too far with them.) but they are morally a much lighter shade of grey and are actually old allies of House Atreides until Vernius was forced to go renegade by the Emperor's covert machinations. Officially attack by a rival House under suspicion of breaking the anti-technology laws, but with Imperium troops leading the charge, and unofficially because their technological innovations were costing the Imperium government money. (Basically the Imperium got paid a set fee for every highliner shipment. House Vernius created a new highliner design that carried a lot more cargo. Higher cargo capacity equaled fewer shipments needed which meant less money flowing into the Imperium's piggy bank.)

    I played the heck out of Dune 2000 and when I heard of Spice wars I picked it up in EA, it's not my cup of tea sadly, im definitely more into the RTS side of things and Spice Wars did not scratch that itch, sad days.

    As someone who played Emperor: Battle for Dune at the time, I have to strongly disagree. Emperor looked significantly better than any of the popular competitors at the time (Red Alert 2: Yuri's Revenge and Empire Earth). However, the nature of early 3D Graphics means that it has aged terribly.
