Ah yes the Golden Age of RTS where RTS games were being released on the PC as much as 3rd and 1st person shooter games were being released on console. but E-sports ended up being the death of the RTS. Sure it propped up Blizzard to international status, but then MOBAs came and all the E-sports hype left. Eh i wouldn't say e-sport is why they died or that they are even dead, starcraft 2 and age of empires 2 still have huge e-sport scene, they never shrunk, only grew every year. Just Mobas and FPS grew a lot faster. The whole genre is struggling because RTS is just not worth it, put it simply RTS games cost a lot more money to make, especially campaigns. So imo it's supply and demand issue that is all, there is still people who want new RTS but rts fans don't like microtransactions and honestly game studios are not going to go for one of least profitable genres even if they want to, end of the day they still need to make money. For Example Command and Conquer Rivals was probably the least expensive C & C to make and it still makes $150k+ every months from appstore and google play and probably a lot more early, and it's not even considered that succesfull of a mobile game. Meanwhile Supreme Commander cost over 20 million to make and 'only' sold 1milion copies, idk if it even made a profit honestly.
@@123dmytro123 20 million is nothing. Modern Warfare 2's development cost around 45 million with a further 200 million in marketing. Another game, Gears of War:Judgement cost 60 million according to Sweeney. Then there's Halo 3 which cost 30 million with an additional 30 million for marketing. You are still right that RTS' are not as profitable. However it's not because they're expensive to make but because there's less of a market for them. Shooters are generally the most profitable genre because everyone and anyone can play and get into them as they're easy to get into. (Which is why there was the boom in shooter games back then) RTS' on the other hand are much more niche in the gaming community.

I'm in love with this entire franchise, and Dark Crusade is my favourite. I would kill for a revamped Dark Crusade campaign as Soulstorm was a huge letdown for me. (The mod support for Soulstorm is insane though so I'll give it that.)
I could not agree more. I think I finished Dark Crusade over 30 times by now. Played it on hard most of the time, with all of the races, multiple times. Soulstorm was a HUGE letdown for me because of the way they dealt with difficulty. Medium means your units = 200% health ; Hard means your units = 75% health. I made a mod a few years back where the health was 100% on all difficulties, I don't have it anymore, would like to.
@@UncleAsmos2005 It's in the official ModDB page laddie, don't be confused by Firestorm over Kaurava as it's the same mod, just different name to referenciate to. But I don't think it works with pirated versions, as the game need to be updated to 1.4 and all the cracks are 1.2 with no possibility of updating.
If only, in your hours of lore searching and research for this (excellent) video, you had uncovered the most crucial information of all: right clicking on reinforcement will have it automatically queue up new reinforcements, without you needing to spam it each time.
And then when you've right clicked on 3 squads of dudes reinforcements and equipment (and left clicked the commander cause you can't right click him for some reason) and you NEED to build that fucking listening post but the cost of reinforcing is slightly lower than the cost of the post so you're sitting there waiting for the number to reach 100 but it gets to 90 then drops to zero three or four times before you either give up and do something else till the reinforcement is done, or cancel the reinforcement and- oh look 60 orks and 2 wartraks just walked into your base at minute 3 of the mission, better luck next time!
I just feel so bad for those of you who didn't experience the full online competition that happened back in mid to late 2000s. Those who did know that the campaign on "insane" was just the most basic preparation for the hellish nightmare of online warfare. I remember several times staying up all night playing against someone I never met, 6+ hours. It was brutal. I loved it.
I can remember in multiplayer competition having the ENTIRE BOARD covered with turrets. You would have as many HQs as the game allowed (was it 4? 6?) And just absolutely cover every square inch of the board. You wouldnt see any sign of your opponent for at least 30 mins... but if you didnt race like hell in that time to max out your defenses you were DONE FOR!!
In the dark crusade missions, something I always liked is that if a region you had previously captured gets attacked, you'll have your old buildings and several of the strategic points already under your control if you captured them last time, it was a real nice way of showing progress and stronger control of the region.
one of the best base-builder RTS ever. played on release and still play it monthly with UA to this day. thank you for shining a light on these classics

I recently installed this game on my computer again after almost 7 years. Remembering the wonderful moments of my childhood, I shed a tear. Greetings from Russia! These kinds of things unite us all.
@Eric Huckaby When we take a look back in our childhood everything seems so bright and amazing, but actually it's just our brain make it be so. But I can play this game even now
Soulstorms was my introduction to the Sisters of Battle. They became my favorite faction. Love their aesthetic in the game too. Led by freaking Sister Lady Gaga.
One thing, you forgot to mention about the Stronghold missions: They get harder with each subsequent stronghold you conquer. So there's a strategic element to that as well. Any particular SH giving you trouble because of its gimmicks? No problem, just make it your first target on the next playthrough and it will be easier.
Used to watch my brothers play it when I was a kid. Fell in love with the Tau Empire, and started collecting and painting it (very poorly) for the tabletop game. Then the interest died for about ten years. Then bought Dawn Of War Dark Crusade, played it, and now I have fallen in love with the 40k world again, building a Tau army once more. Amazing game.
I fell in love with the miniatures in a store nearby, but the games truly cemented the love for the universe. I ended up playing deamons due to their (at the time) very unique ruleset.
Soulstorm is the only one that still has an active player base, and isn't as horrendously imbalanced as Dark Crusade in multiplayer. Unfortunately, its also the most broken, with awful servers that crash more then half of the time starting a game.
You should install DoWOnline launcher. Majority of veterans are using that launcher, fixes all the crashes and bugs from the steam server. Oh, they have camera mod too which zooms out a little bit for a wider view.
Dawn of War and Company of Heroes are one of my favorite RTS games i played plus the unit quotes are so memorable and epic as for Soulstorm i have only one thing to say BOREALUM
Do you think I care if we lose a beacon or two? This is war. War! All we need is enough Battle Brothers on the ground that we can crush them under our boot heels and destroy them with our bolters. That is what matters, Space Marines.
You are the top producer of RTS-related content on RUclips. And what's not to be, there are so many of hidden gems in this genre - thinking of Warhammer Dark Omen, Myth II, Warlords Battlecry III, KKnD, M.A.X, Warwind, NetStorm and the list just keeps going, plenty of fish in this bucket from the golden era of video games.
Fun fact: In Dark Crusade the leader of the Chaos Space Marines is voiced by the VO that did Gabriel Angelos. I guess that's why Eliphas sounded so cool in DC. (I don't mean to undermine Steve Blumm in DOW2, he did an amazing job as always, plus he's pretty much everywhere in that game).
Oh man I remember playing it back when it was brand new, I was 16 and this game blasted me up the ass. Dawn of War is still one of my all time favorite Rts games.😹
I remember playing dawn of war dark crusade when I was young, probably by the time rts games died out for a short bit, but I remember stopping cuz it was too hard for me to understand, and I've picked it back up after completely forgetting about it, picked it up last year and thought it was still a tad difficult, but lately, I've been playing more RTS games and almost finished the campaign for dark crusade. I'm so glad, after all these years, I will finish a game and be proud of myself for getting back to it.
I remember i was like 10 or 11 I played Dark Crusade for the first time, playing with Imperial Guard vs Chaos, camping and building my base intill a Bloodthirster came in smacking on my base, not gonna lie i was a bit scared xD, frome that day I played DC, SS, DW II and the reste, got into the lore of W40K watched videos and loved it, so yeah DW was a big deal for me also got me indirectly into the warhammer fantasy lore too.
I have alot of childhood (8-9ish) nostalgia myself for winter assault and dark crusade in particular!! I remember tag teaming my bloodthirster and deamon prince to slay all who stood in my way!
The game just had those little details that made it amazing. For example the background ambient gunshots and artillery sounds that you hear when your gameplay is still "quiet" and not yet chaotic. That creates the sense of scale. You are fighting on just one part of the front, far far away another battle rages on as well.
best game ever, i recently bought everything for 9€ with the total apocalipse mod is madness sometimes you produce troops to throw them into a meatgrinder in the middle of the map
Awesome retrospective! I started my history with Dawn of War with the demo to the original game, and later bought each expansion in sequence... Never got into the subsequent games, but I spent maaaany hours of my teenage years staying up late playing skirmish games with my friends. Dark Crusade was our go to version, but the oversized personalities of the characters and units (exemplified by the perfect voice acting) made all the games fun and memorable. Also,. maybe you ran into this while researching, but one mod we always used was Skirmish AI, which helped with some of the pathfinding issues and just generally made the AI a lot more competent in skirmish maps.
Funny, me and the boys were going back to play DoW 1, and we repeatedly got our asses handed to us by the AI before we realized we had resource sharing on and had given the computer a god damn dyson sphere. Good times.
19:02 There is a twist in the novelization of this campaign, which reveals the inquisitor Thot, who is working with you and helping you through the story was the demon himself. I… found this twist a bit unnecessary from the novel, since it was never in the game.
To give a minor explanation about the awkward flying units in Soulstorm. At the time, the owner of the IP gameworkshop was in the progress of releasing a bunch of flying unit models for its minitiature game. Thus it isn't unlikely to think that Ironlore was asked to include some of these. There were already skimmers in the game with the ability to temporarily fly short distances, so their coding was probably the basis for the flyers. Hench the awkwardness, as they were never intended to permanently fly.
One game I'd really suggest having a look at is Star Wars Force Commander. It was one of my first strategy games, and the rebels vs empire felt like the two factions had genuinely different play styles (including the rebellion stealing imperial vehicles, which could be defended against by garrisoning storm troopers inside the vehicle). Unfortunately, the game is no longer available for sale basically anywhere nowadays, and requires an alternative installer on modern systems due to having used a 16 bit installer when it was first released. Still, if you were able to, I'd definitely be interested in seeing that piece of history.
I played this like..25 years ago? Brilliant game though only had like 4 factions to choose from and on my second go at it..fondly remember working out that one of the Earth Federation guys were able to spawn Terminators. The Tank and APC were breath taking as they raced into the combat area and stopped in the side of the of the battle areas, picking the enemy off. My gosh those huge giants from the elders race, and another race that I can't remember the name of. I didn't get time to understand the Orcs style although I did get to make a leader in each squad.
The Necrons and Chaos in Dark Crusade hit me like a ton of bricks; they’re hard as nails. The first time I played as Tau I had to start again and turn down the difficulty. It’s a little frustrating that the AI knows exactly where your base is from the very start of each map!

Did you check out AoE4 ? I ask unironically. I installed, played a while, it felt a ton like AoE3. Like having an old game installed twice. I forgot all about it. @hawkshot867
You do not like the Imperial Guard? How... is that possible? Anyways awesome video. I prefer DoW to Company of Heroes by a lot these days. As disgusting as the developers have been to the series, Men of War just erases CoH for what I want from a WW2 RTT, but damn is Dawn of War 1 good. A 64-bit remaster with mod suppoty would absolutely make me ecstatic.
Dawn of War is a lot less strategic and balanced. Everyone keeps talking about men of war but I don’t see any base building in it like a traditional RTS.
When I was little I didn't like the humans much because they are boring humans and there are aliens and cooler factions to play as but now that I'm older the IG is one of my favourite and winter assault holds a strong place in my heart and for the nostalgia I get from it!! And general Stern is amazing!!
Ultimate edition is a beautiful idea. Love the implementation of coop for the campaign, would definitely spend a long weekend at a LAN party with my 5 or so friends I got into DOW. Could even work for the original and Winter Assault, if coop mode was balanced for it, and player 1 gets a leader and player 2 doesn't (or gets a secondary commander, like a librarian, sorcerer, big mek, harlequin or assassin, although some of these are more balanced than others)
I can honestly say that these games have shaped my choice in video games ever since. It opened the doors up to the universe of Warhammer 40k. Keep up the good work Zade can see you being a huge youtuber one day. Earned my Sub!
I still play these games to this day, these games and the folllowing mod support, are timeless and i really hope Relic Work with the Team over at UA to make a "Remake" a Strategy game like no other. Great Video man, keep these up, you were entertaining and informative! You should play Warhammer 40,000 Gladius Relics of War on Steam, another 40K turn based Strategy game, i've been delving into aswell!
I hope you are using the latest version of "DoW Mod Manager" for mods. And no - the version included with an UA mod is not the newest :-) github.com/Fragjacker/DoW-Mod-Manager/releases Or from a my page (I made a lot of latest improvements) github.com/IgorTheLight/DoW-Mod-Manager/releases
I'd die for a DoW remake/remaster, add a new expansion for it where it adds new factions, like Adaptus Mechanicus, Genestealer Cults or the most demanded: the Tyranids.
The Emperor protects! I spent hours, upon hours playing this game when it first came out. Still have the original CDs. It was my first exposure to warhammer 40k. I recently purchased the DoW and DoW 2 collection from Steam. I wish someone remastered the series.
Dark crusade and soulstorm have so much replayability with the mods, there could be holograms and im 70 years old. I would still play these absolute godly games.
What, I think, you didn't mention is that when Soulstorm came out, they did some rebalancing. For example, Tau's XV88 (IIRC) units used to come in threes, which made them a good substitution for defense towers that Tau didn't have. But for Soulstorm they were nerfed to one, yet they still occupy 3 slots in your army limit. Which made them pretty useless to me. They're slow af and I only ever used them for defense. What really pissed me off though is that they later patched Dark Crusade to have the same changes. Now you can't have units of three XV88s in any game.
When I first played the game I tried to use that battlesuit but I couldn't figure out why it was so bad, and now I know that it was designed around you having 3 times as many as them
I really appreciated this game for the shift in strategy from "i can just turtle and then MAMMOTH TANK SPAM" or equivalent. If youre not out there getting those strategy points, youre pretty quickly out teched and out matched. Also... Can i get a hell yeah for sync kills?!
They literally started the show with a show-stopper. No one has tried to top DoW and it's expansions because I honestly don't think any developer has been able to think of a way to top it. It's a pretty god damn tight package and it all still works and plays well today.
Oh yeah. I love my old strategy of choosing IG, building a thousand plasma turrets and as many basilisk to rain death on the enemy. Playing this game is like visiting my home town and smashing my childhood sweetheart.
DoW & Supreme Commander are the only RTS I ever truly liked after AoE. Never would have thought that AI Skirmish games could be spent 100s of hours on. DoW particularly was if not the first game that got me interested in the Lore of a game.
One difference in the DC/SS campaigns is the fact that in Dark Crusade, when the AI attacks in the campaign, they use the strength of their current province as their strength, where as in Soulstorm, they have to start from zero, but get their honour guards. This means that if the AI attacks from, say, their stronghold, to a region adjacent to it, they will magically have two/three bases and lots of units the moment you start defending it.
I miss dawn of war it was amazing it had so many factions that I love in my opinion warhammer dawn of war is better than starcraft I've been hoping for a dawn of war 4 or remastered dawn of war but that's never going to happen I miss the series.
Punctuation, it helps break your ideas up into smaller bits so that everybody reading can understand. Please use commas in your sentences and periods at the end. For example, I believe what you were saying would better be expressed like this: "I miss dawn of war, it was amazing *and* it had so many factions that I love. In my opinion Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War is better than StarCraft. I've been hoping for a Dawn of War 4 or remastered Dawn of War but that's never going to happen, I miss the series."
"Open Astartes on another tab because you'll inevitably go watch it after this" ... You've earned my sub, but I'm not sure I like being called out like that
Good video. Only comment or thing ill say since you pretty much covered qlot of the gripe of Soulstorm. In terms of faction abilities, they really scuffed the abilities to become pretty weak for SOME factions. For instance, in dark crusade we already had regional landmarks and upon heing conquered, gave the faction new abilities. There was one that allowed an increased pop maximum, allowed two attack per turn, spaceport allowed you to attack anywhere. Etc. I think in my head, they could have done this with faction abilities. IG- instead of increasing production of requisition. Could have had an increased pop maximum similar to dark crusade. Orks- instead of pretty useless population growth that increases Garrison very very slowly. They could have allowed two attacks per turn for orks. Simple and easy. And instead of every faction utilizing webway gates. Make them space ports, mean an army on a territory with a spaceport can only travel to anither with a space port (functionally the same as webway gates in the game). Eldar- 1 of the only 2 factions that can use the webway. fleet March works exactly like the spaceport did in dark crusade allowing Eldar to literally attack any territory at any time. (Except strongholds. You need to attack a territory adjacent first). Additionally. I think Taldeer and her honor gusrd should he given an option to appear in ANY territory defence if the player wishes. As long as they are recruited. Dark Eldar- 2nd faction that can use the webways. Though I considered a variant of fleet March just like the Eldar have... I think Dark Eldar should also he able to move to ANY territory on the outworld map. Additionally i think a neat idea for dsrk eldar is to allow the leader to "recruit" honour guard of defeated leaders, so if i as the dark eldsr fight the leader and win in any territory. I can also use requisition to "recruit " them they are basically charmed units that i caj bring to battlefield. Just like regulsr honor guard
Remember? I've played Dark Crusade at least twice a week, every week in the last year, and apart from that it's always been game that i've picked up every couple of months and put a hundred hours into before doing it again a couple of months later. I'll play that game for as long as it is playable on windows.
Love your enthusiasm for GORGUTZ. As a wee lad the first ever exposure to Orks that I can remember was... Totalbiscuits WTF is Space Marine. But my SECOND ever exposure to Orks was the Dark Crusade campaign introduction cutscene, and it was love at first site. Instantly fell in love with their aesthetic and soon after fell in love with everything else about them. I was instantly doomed to be an Ork player on the tabletop, a prophecy that I fulfill to this day.
Pro tip: Get the GOTY version of DoW and all of the expansions. Download and install Ultimate Apocalypse - mod. Enjoy absolute perfection. Edit: Blood Ravens have not been canon for long. When Dawn of War came out, Blood Ravens were no where else but in there. So if Relic would've made up more lore about Blood Ravens and the characters, they'd've had to go through Games Workshop, I think. Or at the very least it would've made making them canon even more time consuming.

In the dark crusade missions, something I always liked is that if a region you had previously captured gets attacked, you'll have your old buildings and several of the strategic points already under your control if you captured them last time, it was a real nice way of showing progress and stronger control of the region.
I would just leave them with one building left and build up a massive fortification and large bases. That was super fun to do

You are fighting on just one part of the front, far far away another battle rages on as well.
best game ever, i recently bought everything for 9€ with the total apocalipse mod is madness
sometimes you produce troops to throw them into a meatgrinder in the middle of the map
Thanks mate! I didn't actually, but I'll look it up :)
Funny, me and the boys were going back to play DoW 1, and we repeatedly got our asses handed to us by the AI before we realized we had resource sharing on and had given the computer a god damn dyson sphere. Good times.
This is a good analysis still.
And I love your ideas for a remaster!
Great to know, thanks!
Not even going to watch the video, because: "IN DEATH I STILL SERVE!!!", that game was every bit as good as we thought it was!
Hands down one of the best RTS games ever made. The Imperial guard were my fav faction. A remastered version is long overdue for such an iconic game.
The Necrons and Chaos in Dark Crusade hit me like a ton of bricks; they’re hard as nails. The first time I played as Tau I had to start again and turn down the difficulty. It’s a little frustrating that the AI knows exactly where your base is from the very start of each map!
Bah to easy mate. I modded the game to make it harder and it was so good.
To be fair I'm tempted to reinstall.

Should've been Tyranids.
My favorite underrated new IP of the RTS Golden Age was Goblin Commander: Unleash the Horde
They literally started the show with a show-stopper. No one has tried to top DoW and it's expansions because I honestly don't think any developer has been able to think of a way to top it. It's a pretty god damn tight package and it all still works and plays well today.

For example, I believe what you were saying would better be expressed like this:

"I did my homework"
"I'd love to get more lore on the Blood Ravens Primarch"
More info in the game :) I've read the lore post release!
Great video mate, thanks for taking the time to put it together :)
My pleasure, thank you very much for watching!
Remember? I've played Dark Crusade at least twice a week, every week in the last year, and apart from that it's always been game that i've picked up every couple of months and put a hundred hours into before doing it again a couple of months later. I'll play that game for as long as it is playable on windows.
I recently picked up all the dawn of wars and all the dlc and within the first 2 hours I was hooked
2021 and I still play dawn of war original rts, love the game.
Great video! so many memories. I remember playing the Dawn of war DEMO from a PC Gamer DVD that you got with the magazine months before release.
Thanks bro, appreciate it :)
Damn nice work on the thumbnail- preview showing all the faction leaders when hoovering over it!
Thank you for this video. I love this series so much, and it really helped to kickstart my love of 40k and Warhammer.
Pro tip:
Get the GOTY version of DoW and all of the expansions.
Download and install Ultimate Apocalypse - mod.
Enjoy absolute perfection.
Edit:
Blood Ravens have not been canon for long. When Dawn of War came out, Blood Ravens were no where else but in there.
So if Relic would've made up more lore about Blood Ravens and the characters, they'd've had to go through Games Workshop, I think. Or at the very least it would've made making them canon even more time consuming.
