Using the Ram 1500 as a test bench, You had an opportunity to address the curved front bed rail problem area of this truck bed, and how each cover dealt with it.
Read some reports as well as some youtube vids the FRP cover can absorb water over the years causing the cover to gain weight. I was all for FRP, but believe aluminum might be the best; even if where I live, rain is like never seen or felt.
I went ahead and bought the UnderCover Elite Hinged Tonneau Cover for my 2021 Ram 1500 Quad Cab Big Horn. I chose that one over everything else just because I wanted a one piece construction and because I seen a couple of videos on RUclips that showed people trying to open the tail gate with the tonneau cover in the closed position and the cover itself prevented it from opening, pretty much guaranteeing that it would be impossible to break into the bed of the truck. Other than the fact that you have to open the cover to be able to drop the tailgate down, I am beyond satisfied with my purchase.
I'm interested in the trifold bak-flip. My question is this. If I need to remove the cover completely to use that bed space, how easily is that achieved?
I almost bought one today, but my last truck just had a tailgate latch fail that was only 4 years old.. I am still trying to decide which cover to put on my new Ram..
So I would like to give an update. About 2 years ago I went with the Undercover Elite tonneau cover and had it installed on my truck. Just after 2 years of ownership, I regret my decision. With the high winds that came through Ohio the night of December 22nd through December 24th, it was so strong that it literally lifted up the back of my tonneau cover (even with it in the lock position) just enough and blew snow in through between the tailgate and the cover and literally filled my entire truck bed with snow. As of now I’m looking at getting a Cap/Topper from A.R.E. and am gonna sell my Undercover Elite tonneau cover.
Im going with the jack rabbit. I used to have a hinged cover, but it puts a HARD limit on what you can haul. Anything tall like a dresser with a few bins, or a motorcycle/dirtbike in the bed (I do it) and you have to take the whole thing off, which is a PITA with all the hardware and how heavy it is. Also makes loading things harder, you cant go over the side or even stand in the bed to tighten straps. You should have mentioned it in the vid, you didnt really address the negatives on that. Like them all they have their place depending on the persons needs.
Great roundup of tonneau covers, but it leaves me with a very important question: What about RAM 1500 pickups with the RamBox option? What are the choices of tonneau covers for anyone who has opted for the RamBox?
I had a Extang bed cover on my 2018 company F150 crew cab 4x4 and averaged 19.1 mpg on my mostly highway daily trip. When the company bought my F150 XLT premium they bought an almost identical F150 Lariat crew cab 4x4. I drove the Lariat which had an open bed for a couple of months and averaged 17.0 mpg. That’s a 12% increase in mpg. On a practical basis the tri-fold bed cover cuts down on the cargo space, and is time consuming. I just bought a new F-250 for my personal use. I thought about all my various options for the bed. I decided to go with a UWS secure lock cross over tool box.
Hard trifolds have quite a few downsides as well that aren’t discussed in this video. For starters, the cable/latch hardware ends up resting on the exterior when you open them, which ends up wearing grooves into the aluminum and scratches whatever paint or coating is on them straight off. Foam bumpers can help, but they only do so much. The other problem is that the third section is basically useless. It either blocks the front of the bed when it’s down or blocks your rear window completely if it’s up. I would much rather have a retractable cover and give up the tiny space for the canister.
I like the retractable best. Do they make it for 2016 Ram 1500. Right now my budget is for an inexpensive soft roll up, but I'd prefer a retractable if I can swing it...
Would probably be the hard-fold one for me, low maintenance cost, can be fully-opened for big tall stuff, withstand heavy load on cover, hard to poke with knife😊
@@Dudeee_ unfortunately the truck I bought it for I was rear ended and truck was totally after only 3 weeks of having the cover on it. Cover has just been sitting in garage since so no structural updates
That’s what I went with, but I regret my decision. When all the high winds and snow came through Ohio from December 22nd through the 24th it was so bad that the high winds lift up my tonneau cover (even with it in the lock position) and blew snow between the cover and my tail gate and filled the bed with snow.
I have a hard tri-fold and hate it. In between each of the sections is rubber (or something). The problem is that this allows each section to move. It get out of alignment all the time, and after a few uses it no longer seals by the tailgate correctly. It’s expensive and heavy to use. It also rests against your back glass. Who thought that was a good idea!?!? - Hate it. That being said, I am really interested in that hard roll that you showed. Really looks nice.
I cheated out and bought a Tyger Auto soft tri-fold. Has been good for a few years now, can see it falling apart in a few more, but I’m not hauling much more than a few things here and there. For $150 can’t ask for more
How is that holding up for you? I bought the same thing, (under a different brand name), for my Dakota and I wouldn't want anything else. If I need to I can take it completely off in about 2-3 minutes and it is light weight. My concern is longevity. Is yours still holding up?
You didn't mention that any big cargo can't go all the way back in the bed with that last cover. I have had an idea for a cover that allows full use of the bed when it's open. But I can't tell you because I don't want my idea to get stolen. lol I have to get around to building a prototype and then pitch it to various manufacturers. Once the idea is patented, copyrighted and trademarked. Oh, and I also need to buy a truck too. lol
Very outdated info. Most of these covers don't show working well with the tail gate, but do now. If I relied on this video, I'd pass on most of them when in fact they've been improved and now are good choices.

The price hike from the first to the others is insane.
when he cut that 1st cover, i felt it in my bones. idk why

Pretty cool he cut the leather just for video.
We try. 😉 Thanks for watching, Victor! -Zach
I thought he was gonna fake it....NOPE!
I already have a soft trifold but I really want to upgrade to the hard trifold now. thank you!
Great Video! I have a 4th Gen 1500 4X4 Laramie that needs a cover. Love #2/#3. I would like to seen a water test on each cover for sure.

I have the bakflip f1 on my 2017 f150 and it's awesome! Easy to install by yourself and works very well with rain! Definitely recommend!

I like the tri-fold cover.
I like the 2nd and 3rd one. Can I have it professionally installed?
How much for the one with the hole?
thanks for the helpful info!

how is the install on the trifold affected by a bed liner
Very useful and informative video. Thanks Adam! Tri-Fold is the one I will go for.
And what happens if your tailgate latch fails? Mine did I had a different cover on it though
What about the soft tri-folds?
Got a soft tri-fold cover from the manufacturer for a 2021 Laramie ( about 495 ) but really like that jack-rabbit cover.
WhatTonneau cover could I use between ram box storage

I can see the Minnesota winters not allowing that retractable to work.
I have the trifold and I live it
How do they hold up in the Arizona heat. Do they start to dip in the center with all that 115 degree, constant heat.
Dave G wondering that myself.
I live in Tucson az and just bought one of these. I'll try to remember to update lol
My last Ram had the trifold and it held up well for the 6 years I had it. I live in Phoenix. Thinking about getting the canister one this time around.
@@backintogear9071 any update?

Like the 2nd one
That hinged cover is the one I'd choose.

Just got a 2019 Ram 1500 classic . Are there cover to fit this?
There are! Check out our site and the 2009-2018 Bed Covers and they'll fit your truck! -Zach

My question is I have a 21 Rebel do these all work with the handsfree tail gate drop or do they hold it up
What do you guys think of Gator etx soft covers? Do they last and not fade?
Well, how do you open it with a tailgate latch failure>?

Can you do one on a ram with toll boxes?
I need to know what tri fold hard or soft Tonneau cover fits a 2019 Ram Classic 6.4ft... i am having a hard time finding the right fit.
Lund of Howe, Indiana makes 85% of all covers.
Need to discuss fit with Ram Box. That last hinge one looks like a No Go for Ram Box
Thanks for the feedback! Yes, this fits all 2019-2023 RAM 1500 Models Without a RAM Box.
Necesito el manual de instalación en español

If your idea is to have the hard cover lift up and down using scissor hinges it's been done
@@nathancousineau1243 Nope. That's not it.
You stabbed my heart!!! Why!!! Great vid, but whyyyyyyyy 😭
He ruins the one cover that will really do a good job for not a lot of money.
super
The second one. How its safe? Your cargo is still under danger, anyone can open it easyly near it. Its just hook and loop…
Trifold for me.

Tool boxes
Someone take this man's knife away from him.
You can say goodbye carrying your four wheeler around ,those covers take up too much space
So what you’re saying is you just wasted 300 bucks?
None of these fit the 2019 classic body style :( booo
Really didn't have to destroy the first cover. We are smart enough that an explanation would have been enough. What a waste.
