I've had the vinyl start coming loose and peeling up on two. They replaced the first one under warranty (with an X4S), and now the new one just started peeling up on the back corner. So each has lasted about 3 years. I'll probably try to glue it back down, otherwise I still like it.
I work construction and have the same cover for five years. Open and close daily, Texas heat, Texas hail storm, you name it. Zero issues. I find it strange you got a defective product repeatedly.
The "felts" came loose on mine after it was out of warranty. I took the whole cover off, flipped it upside down, applied construction adhesive, and put back the felts. It's held for at least three years.
Great, honest review. Even with the 5 year warranty, full replacement is off the table after the 5 years. I had two X2's fall completely apart in 6 years, and with my latest completely disintegrated, best they would do is 50% off. The felt went first after less than a year. Year 2 the vinyl would shrink and pull away from from the edges, then completely crack and bind the rolling ability before year 3. While some of the issues have been addressed like the plastic replacing the felt, mountains of reviews now claim the endcaps come off and the vinyl quality still shrinks and cracks. I opted to get the MX4 instead with the discount, and hope I don't continue to have problems from this "premium" tonneau company. $1K+ is too much money to have it become trash in 3 years from Georgia sun.
@jobeall5078 , pretty good so far. I don't want to jinx it, but after 1 year there are no issues with fading or the materials itself. Only problem I've had so far is that they use plastic caps in the fold joints to lock into the rails which pop out of place every time I open it, and makes closing it a pain. (This was echoed by a couple other people's comments it looks like). Jury is still out since my Revolvers all failed at the 2-3 year mark.
I'm on my second x2, I just got it replaced from BAK, they were good about it... I changed it out today. The first one almost disintegrated I hope this one lasts... I like it.
On my second one. Same issue with felt..but worse is the aluminum track on the end have come undone and now it's falling apart. They won't do anything forme as they replaced the first one for " free". I wouldn't by another one
Hey I bought a Access Lorado Roll-Up tonneau cover in 2010 and it has been great. Always parked outside, i have no garage or carport, little to no shade all day. It has been rolled down most of the 14 years, stayed rolled up for about the past 5 years until 2 weeks ago rolled it back down. The hook strip on bed rail is wore out but it still stays down when driving. The fabric is fine.
Yep, keeps the aluminum from marking the top surface when it’s rolling up. The alum would rub off silver color on the black especially when rolled up driving around.
I had one here in Arizona and the heat completely destroyed the cover. They replaced it with a folding one. Which has now also cracked, split, and delaminated in the heat. 😂
To bad it took them so long to “fix” this cover, well, mostly fix. I was actually looking at this one but after your first 2 videos I went with a RetraxPro XR and have been very happy ever since.
Hey those plastic ends probably killed numerous sales. It’s a cheap design especially when it comes to bed security. They should be aluminum in design. I like the cover but those cheap breakable plastic ends ENDED it for me.
I took my old cover to the recycler, got a few bucks. The felt is there to keep from pinching your fingers between the slats when rolling it up or down.
the felt is actually there to create a buffer when it rolls up so the aluminum is not rubbing on the vinyl. Felt fell off my X2 in the first year. 5 years later the vinyl is destroyed. These are 5 year covers unless you can garage your truck. Still not bad - it is vinyl after all !

I had the same failure on my 2019 RAM. Truck was parked out side in Texas summer heat. BAK sent me a replacement and its still good as the truck is not parked in the garage and not out in the heat. Only new problem is one of the cover strap clip/retainer broke. May reach out to BAK to see if the new style are available? Thanks for video!
I have the x2 and really like the design. I am glad that they made improvements since then as I do experience the felt “drop” as others have claimed. I am about three weeks away from getting my new Super Duty and will be putting the x4s on it when it arrives.
I have the X4s after the exact same scenario with the X2 (two of them) with the Austin, Tx heat, and it has not held up either. The sides of the top have begun to roll up away from the lid, while slats near the tailgate have become unglued and fallen off.
I like the function and looks of the bak 4s, but with all quality issues and negative reviews, I bought the hf650 quad fold. Right out of the box, bolted it on and it fit perfectly, didn't have to adjust anything.
Those end caps are making me have second thought on the X4S. I'm looking at the Truxedo Sentry which is the same type of cover. The Sentry doesn't have those corner pieces and looks a little more finished IMO. The one issue with the Sentry is the cover needs to be unlatched to close the tail gate. I think I can live with that.
I received a BAK folding hard cover for a GMC Carbon Pro bed, and the rails were actually made in reverse, with the brackets, drains, and notches for the attachment bolts being way off and on the wrong ends.
I'm currently waiting on a revolver x4s to replace a bakflip mx4. Their support has been horrible. You're lucky to get a response via email onces every 4 days, and when you call in the automated voice tells you they're experiencing high call volumes and to use email support. Well I wouldn't be calling in if email support wasn't horrible. Poor quality control, poor customer support. Unfortunately there's not many options for the CarbonPro bed.
Beautiful home, garage, lift and cars. I had that cover in the northeast for about a year..no issue with the felt but the rubber gasket that runs the length of the bed is garbage. I now have the Diamondback cover. It will last a long time. Not crazy about how it opens though. You are right about the old clips. Sucked.
After I get a new Bed cover I am going to use the old bed cover as a floor in my Saturn KA Boat. A little modification with a band saw and it should work well.
Very useful and informative video, at a good pace - thanks. I have an Undercover hard tonneau cover which is great but is a PITA if you want an open bed to transport tall objects. This roll-up tonneau cover is the answer for my next truck. How is it holding up after a year in the Texas heat? I am also in Houston.
I was very interested in that cover for my new Maverick but finally decided on Truck2Go's SyneticUSA retractable bed cover. It actually cost less than the one you got. If they had been priced the same I would’ve gone with the roll-up since it is easier to install. I think the retractable is a more permanent solution, is more water/dust resistant and looks great on the Maverick. However, I have to hand it to BAK for standing behind their product. I also agree with you that they fixed a problem that didn’t exist. Good video. Maybe you could give the old ones to someone willing to fix the 'damage' and put them to use.
@@josephpuchel6497 Very well. I’ve had it a short time so I can’t give a long term review yet. However, it is well made and I look to get a very long lifetime of use from my investment.
felt i would think is keeping a the aluminum from touching the finish on top and leaving marks from scratching and or extremely hot ribs leaving lines on cover
I bought my BAK roll-up cover for 899$ 4/29/2016 the cloth fell off the underside vinyl peeled up the passenger side and bed end. It still works well but looks bad and I'm gonna replace it. I will not repurchase a BAK didn't get 900 worth.BAK offered half off retail and flat 54 shipping 3-year warranty on any bak of my choice. I ordered a gator SF from realtruck chatted with them got 264.41 full-price cover tax-free shipping 10 years warranty vinyl lifetime hardware
I have had mine for nearly 5 years and I can say with confidence it is a piece of shyte. I looks like it is 25 years old. And this is the second one. I got a replacement after just a couple months because the weather striping was barely attached. And those black felt sections are strictly for the heat as this thing gets really hot in SoCal. Just like Texas. And for fun I put the old one on the curb and put my F150 on it to bend it for "proof of destruction".
Really a shame they have not figured it out. I want to get a cover but spending a 1,000 for one it really out there and then having it fail repeatedly not good. There seems to be a lot of people having same problem. The updated design looks better but damn if they didn't blow it with the corner pieces..
In addition to being hot, once you have the felt off the old model you'll find that the panels will pinch the hell out of you when you unroll it barehanded. Additionally, after a couple years the rubber starts to deteriorate and everything that touches it (hands, clothes, etc.) gets annoying black marks all over it. I've had mine about 5 years and it is barely holding up. Pieces keep falling off of it, the rubber strips keep bunching up and sliding off the ends, and it leaks like crazy! I have really grown to hate the old Bak Revolver. So, even if at a great price, I would steer clear of this bed cover. I won't even consider the new version after how bad this one has been.
Your Truck is beautiful. How is your latest Revolver cover holding up in our miserable Texas heat? I've spent days researching the best cover to get for my '21 Titan truck. It will be in our garage when not in use. I like the looks and function of the Revolver x4s best. Just not confident it will last 5 to 10 year. Considering how pricey they are, it's sad, but it seems none of the tonneau covers will last over 6 years. Appreciate your helpful videos and any updates.
@ZeroToAwesome so good to know! I just now ordered one for my truck. If I mostly keep it in the garage, hopefully it will last even in our TX brutal heat. I know none of the types of covers are 100% waterproof, but I am hoping it will keep groceries or horse feed sacks dry for a 30 minute drive in the rain ...a blessing we seldom get.
Hey BAK should update this product and use a Velcro strip down each side instead of the hard rubber. Similar to Truxedo CT series. Also remove those rubber ends which seem to be issue of breaking off.
So no better one found.? I had a Retrax on my 2010 2500 then put another one on my 2020 3500. I thought they would have made improvements but they have not. They have sent me like 3 sets of rails & a new cover as mine is Crooked at the head unit. What I told them is stupid & should have fixed since this cover has been out for a long time is the locking mechanism. It is nice that it covers all stake pockets & you can lock it anywhere but the lock uses pointed pins to dig into the aluminum rail leaving marks and can move as metal to metal will not stay. They need to make the locking fingers bigger & add a type of rubber to them so it does not damage the rails & will help keep it in place. I was also thinking maybe a rubber strip on the rail so the locking pins can dig into the rubber
I'd really like to see how the weight rating holds up in real life. It would be cool to see you test one of the old ones and find out if you can stand on it or not!
I just installed the Bak X4S on my truck. During installation those plastic end caps popped right off. I thought that was an odd choice by the manufacturer. They are easy to put back on, but it's still strange. We will see how it goes. I love everything else about the cover.
My X4s had one of the caps broken off upon delivery. According to FedEx tracking the warrantee replacement cap was delivered today while I'm at work. Not only was one of the two spring clips broken, but the indexing pin was also broken. My thought on how to improve this part would be to cut off the indexing pin, drill a hole there, and then use a pop-rivet to hold it on. I'm trying to decide if I should preemptively modify my cover, or wait for the warrantee to run out before I pop-rivet those two endcaps on... Something that I have discovered with the cap missing. It is easy to see that I need to adjust the cover placement because the rear gasket material isn't quite touching the tailgate. Need to shift everything back by about 1/32 to 1/16 of an inch.
I had this cover and promptly sold it. The tabs on the end of the rail, closest to the tailgate stick out about 1.5in and is super easy to break off if you have big items in the bed. If you ever plan on having a couch, crate, etc that's somewhat big, do not recommend this one. Huge flaw
This is the only comment I’ve seen mentioning this after watching numerous reviews. Loading something like an ATV, I immediately recognized this would be a potential issue. Glad to see I’m not the only one.
The roll up doesn't reach the cab. It's fastened down with a strap before it gets there. The reason for the felt is so the aluminum doesn't scratch the material.
So it seems these only work if you live in a perfectly medium environment. Too hot they fail, too cold (seen in other reviews) and they won't roll up. Probably taking these off the list of possibilities.
I did a review last summer on my BAKFlip F1 cover. It’s my second one and still has the same water absorption/weight issue and now leaks like crazy. Never again.
I just wanted to give you big thank you for this video. I have a new Ford Maverick and I had planned on saving up for this cover. I may still end up with it, but now I'm going to continue researching covers.
@@JohnbobonI don't get it. I mean he is actually recommending the cover... I don't get why you wouldn't get it. He is literally saying it's the best @muldoon493
The fact that they have you destroy the old cover and garbage it, send you a new one and multiple times...they obviously know they are junk, made/cost them very little to make, etc. And their same covers have the same ongoing issues in which they never seem to fix. And instead of coming up with a new version fix, they just send a free new one.
bummer about the failures, I was wishing Id gone that route instead of as cheap as possible like I did. glad i didnt. I can see bed covers for some UTVs? or a retractable roof on a UTV? or if you were someplace that had snow you could load up and drap s herd of people around a snow covered field behind the truck on them.... Here to help!
Cheap doesn't always mean bad. In the case of a bed cover, cheaper is less complicated. I always bought an Extang Classic Platinum snap down cover for all of the 5 trucks I've owned over the years and no issues with them. The first was on a 93 Lightning and it was still in good shape 10 years later when I traded for an 03 Supercrew. Extang his since discontinued that cover and the reason why I'm looking elsewhere for a cover for my new truck.
So they basically saying don’t trust the consumer telling them the product is bad/ /broken by having a actually doing additional damages to it. Great to know. Guess I won’t be buying their products. And what’s with the crappy cheap piece of plastic at the end of the cover. Very poor quality IMO.
I think it’s more for resale 😂 like basically someone else could still use the product after you get a new one. Which you still can plug the holes, or paint over the x 😂
I’ve had 3 Bak folding covers. They have all fallen apart within 3 years. I purchased them through Amazon… sadly BAK said they were not covered since Amazon was a un approved retailer. I liked the design. But four the heat destroyed the rubber seals between the panels and then the panels began delaminating. I really like the look I’d this roll up. I’m wondering how long the mat finish will hold up?
@@ZeroToAwesome could be. I felt we did a good job taking care of our vehicles. Did a ton of research on these covers before we purchased. Was disappointed over all. We live up near Canada in N ohio. I don’t think the cold had any bearing on the short life of the covers. I’m leaning toward the roll up this time around. Hopefully the new unit will last longer this time
Rubber seals need to be treated and cleaned with lubrication to last longer. Its what ever your willing to deal with for wear down. If it rolls it needs bearing. If it folds, it needs hinges. Both are too expensive to manufacture correctly.
The felt isn't there for heat purposes, it's to keep someone from pinching their fingers while rolling it. Ask how I know this? Because I've gone through 2 covers myself and both times the felt has melted loose in the Texas heat. So when it did I had to roll it with partial felt or no felt and I pinched my fingers skin bad! So I still have the faulty one on my truck yet myself trying to figure out what to do.
Bought the X4s for my 2021. The cover isn’t wide enough to lock into the rails. It’s about a 1/3” off. They sent me new rails which didn’t fix the issue. Also, one of the panels separated showing the felt underneath and leaving a nice lump in the cover. They’re sending me a new cover after I took measurements showing how it wasn’t wide enough and sent pics of the separation. I’m really disappointed with Bak I had the version 1 cover for 4.5 years with no issues ever.
After posting this video I realized one side of my cover wasn’t locking. Like yours, I discovered mine wasn’t wide enough. I wound up putting some shims between the bed and one rail. Seems to work so far
There's a bakflipg2 on my truck that's 11 years old it leaks but still holding up almost every gasket is worn out they sent me free gaskets but how the fuck do you change em out. Lol time for a. New one
My BAK Revolver, that was 5 years old went to be melted down and turned into Bud light cans yesterday. Biggest falling apart piece of junk I've ever purchased.. $1200 dollars down the drain.
If you can get one that fits, sure. About a week after posting this video I noticed my bed cover flapping in the wind on the highway. Turns out it’s about 1/4” too narrow to lock properly. I could probably get another but I’ve shimmed the rails for now and it seems to work. Other people have had the same problem and BAK eventually gets it fixed.
@@ZeroToAwesome besides the issue concerning the possible need to shim it unless they have fixed the issue, how long do you think this model will last considering the changes they have made to the cover? I’m really wanting to get one but I’m not sold on if everything is fixed from the reviews of the prior models with durability of the vinyl and all.
Help can I get a photo ?? I’m on my 2nd one & I forgot to do the destroy process on my original before I tossed it and now they won’t send me a new until I provide them with a photo. The 2nd one is peeling on top at the seams 😑
Good review.. only negative thing I have to say.. don’t you think those caps are probably reasonably cheaply replaceable?? Or even free under warranty? Would’ve left them the way they are.
I think I'd rather buy a cover that doesn't have those. Check out the Truxedo Sentry. It's a similar cover without any plastic pieces to break or fall off. Right now, that's the one I'm most likely to buy.
Still doing great after a year! I can give it a solid “it’ll probably last at least a year (but you might want to glue the end caps on for good measure)” endorsement. And there’s always the warranty if it breaks. They’ve been good about that
Hopefully they send you the right size and you won’t have to. This roll-up tonneau cover is the answer for my next truck. How is it holding up after a year in the Texas heat? I am also in Houston.
Thanks! So far so good. No issues yet with this one. Haven’t even lost those plastic end caps!
@@ZeroToAwesome Thanks for the confirmation.
Hey I’m looking at different brands never heard Truck To Go
How’s it holding up ?
@@josephpuchel6497 Very well! Looks great and works as advertised. Of course, I’ve only had it on a few weeks but I'm very pleased with it.
@@josephpuchel6497 Very well. I’ve had it a short time so I can’t give a long term review yet. However, it is well made and I look to get a very long lifetime of use from my investment.
I don’t think the end caps will flex with the tail gate in the up position - only when you crank on the cover to close it without the gate support.
felt i would think is keeping a the aluminum from touching the finish on top and leaving marks from scratching and or extremely hot ribs leaving lines on cover
One more item. It really makes my 2018 Ford F150, which is perfect cosmetically, look crappy when get around to the back and look at the cover.
I wonder what other proof of destructions they’ve received!
Really a shame they have not figured it out. I want to get a cover but spending a 1,000 for one it really out there and then having it fail repeatedly not good. There seems to be a lot of people having same problem. The updated design looks better but damn if they didn't blow it with the corner pieces..
You could always super glue the end cap into position. That cap prevents the weather stripping from coming up from the end like on the old model.
So far so good. Haven’t even lost one of those end caps yet. The truck is garaged now though so that may be why it’s doing well
@ZeroToAwesome so good to know!
The felt and rubber also help so you don't damage your back window
Great idea!
I'm betting the felt/rubber is to keep it from rattling.
Should not have to glue a $1200 product. Kept me from buying it, thanks for your no BS review.
The purpose of the rubber/felt is to keep the cover from scratching up the back of your cab when it is rolled up. Fun fact. Great vid
no, it contacts in the center not the far edges.
Probably taking these off the list of possibilities.
felt may have been to protect A-surface? decent review, good job.
Must be the same glue on the vinyl cover. The vinyl is pelling back on mine.
The felt may be for sound deadening/ noise reduction for the metal clanging noise
I did a review last summer on my BAKFlip F1 cover. It’s my second one and still has the same water absorption/weight issue and now leaks like crazy. Never again.
Dang that sucks. Sorry!
I just wanted to give you big thank you for this video. I have a new Ford Maverick and I had planned on saving up for this cover. I may still end up with it, but now I'm going to continue researching covers.
Good luck with whatever you get!
I'm about to receive a '23 Maverick. What cover did you choose? I was heavily leaning toward the X4S until I saw this video.
The felt/rubber is to dampen rattle sounds. Otherwise metal cover on metal rail = noise
Use them for roll doors on a shed? And or hurricane window covers.
Or make a boat out of them…
ruclips.net/video/uLttQ8jxZCM/видео.html
a camping tent with a bak revolver retractable top would be cool
Strange. Bought mine through Amazon too and it wasn’t an issue. Maybe their status as a retailer changed at some point
The old bed cover would make a great convertible roof for a side-by-side?
The felt isn't there for heat purposes, it's to keep someone from pinching their fingers while rolling it. Ask how I know this? Because I've gone through 2 covers myself and both times the felt has melted loose in the Texas heat. So when it did I had to roll it with partial felt or no felt and I pinched my fingers skin bad! So I still have the faulty one on my truck yet myself trying to figure out what to do.
nope
One thing you could do with the "destroyed" cover is to give it to me in exchange for a donation to your beer fund! 😂
Any update on how the new X4s is holding up in the summer?
@@LoCleTXRV still doing good. No felt to fall off anymore!
How's it been holding up since this video?
Still doing good!
@@ZeroToAwesome do you get any water or leaks in your bed?
@@eliteclawamusementsI don’t think any of them are 100% waterproof but when there is water it’s not much
It has not been THAT hot in Atlanta.
But it’s called HOTlanta!!
Lol that thumbnail photo is epic!! 😅
New one
@@jond661 lol good question!
@@ZeroToAwesome scary! Good thing it didn’t catch any high winds and rip off!
I think it's to prevent scratching of the top. No metal on metal when u roll it up.
No it’s not. It’s to protect your hands from the hot metal.
@@mct8888 why not both.
My BAK Revolver, that was 5 years old went to be melted down and turned into Bud light cans yesterday.
Biggest falling apart piece of junk I've ever purchased..
$1200 dollars down the drain.
Great video. Thanks. After a couple months of use, do you recommend this cover?
@@ctmartin1319 pretty sure it’s the same vinyl. With the warranty you’ll get at least 5 years. That’s probably all I’d count on
Slice them up in small rollable strips that you can use for low traction situations with the SXS or truck.
I like it!
Very nice F150 Raptor!!
Thank you, I'm still looking or window shopping.
I assume it will help with road noise
The felt keeps it from melting the track and letting water in
The felt keeps you from being pinched
All those great GM products in your garages so why the FORD Truck?
I don’t care about the brand. I just liked the ford trucks better than what gm (or anyone) offered at the time
Wow what an extremely odd warranty process lol! I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. Everything gets weirder as the years go by.
See my comment above 😂
Might make a great cover on a utility trailer
Nicely done, thanks.
Help can I get a photo ?? I’m on my 2nd one & I forgot to do the destroy process on my original before I tossed it and now they won’t send me a new until I provide them with a photo. The 2nd one is peeling on top at the seams 😑
Tell me about your lift in the garage. Thanks.

Nice
Good review.. only negative thing I have to say.. don’t you think those caps are probably reasonably cheaply replaceable?? Or even free under warranty? Would’ve left them the way they are.
Probably. I don’t want to have to call BAK every month for new end caps though
I think I'd rather buy a cover that doesn't have those. Check out the Truxedo Sentry. It's a similar cover without any plastic pieces to break or fall off. Right now, that's the one I'm most likely to buy.
Looking at purchasing the x4s for my 2022 Raptor and was wondering how this one is holding up?
Still doing great after a year! I can give it a solid “it’ll probably last at least a year (but you might want to glue the end caps on for good measure)” endorsement. And there’s always the warranty if it breaks. They’ve been good about that
@@ZeroToAwesome thanks, I’ll definitely glue the end caps like you
the felt is to protect both sides from scratching surfaces
Red Bull Flutag. Make the 2 canopies into wings and do the Flutag!!!

Ok so question of the year whats the purpose of that cloth ? No porpose whatsoever just peel it off 😅😂
I wouldn't waste my money on that unit. I have one that is 3 years old and the cover is coming unglued in a couple of spots.
Make a batch of thermite and light it up. Use titanium powder for a primer.
I like this idea!
Can you post a video of the shims? I just ordered an X4s for my 2009 F-150, so I'm getting mentally prepared to put these in right away.
Hopefully they send you the right size and you won’t have to. But if you do, just throw one of these in between the bed and the rail every place you put a clamp:

I doubt it. It’s vinyl
Thanks for the reply, I thought once the Vinyl is removed it could be painted.

Was I just seeing things, or was the latching mechanism accessible when you pulled off that end cap? Seems like it could be a security issue if so.
You don’t even need to remove the end caps. All you need is a screwdriver and 5 seconds. It locks the wind out, not people with screwdrivers
@@ZeroToAwesome That's kinda a bummer. I often work in Methopotamia, where things in your truck bed grow legs. Cool video.👍

How does the cloth hold up? Does it flop around while driving? I'm in San Antonio and my truck sits outside too. Curious if the cloth top flops around and looks ugly while driving like a soft top.
So far it’s staying glued to the aluminum and not blowing in the wind
