I had a Undercover hard cover on my F150 for 8 years. It was flawless. Try having a guy or two stand on these covers. The Undercover can hold multiple standing on it. And the best part...they are crafted and built in the USA!!
I've had a Truxedo TruxPort for about 10 years on my Ranger Edge that is held in place with Velcro on both sides of the bed. It is going with my truck when I sell it and still looks good with no tears and works fine. No snaps and the tensioner keeps it tight hot or cold. It has been garaged about 50% of the time. Will be adding one to my new Ranger. No one has ever cut it to look at what I have under it but it keeps items covered and dry when it is needed. Practical and inexpensive for my needs and saves fuel.
I live in the north in BC Canada. I had a tri fold on my F 150. It was nice for security and keeping things safe and dry. The problem I have and you didn't mention with all of the one the had the rubber part that runs along the top of the box. Mine would freeze and get stuck. I have had 3 out of the 5 styles you talked about over the years. Foe me it's a canapy for where I live in the winter. Good video overall.
Brooooooooooo!!!! One of the best videos on any subject I have seen on youtube!! Your production quality and information is perfect!! Good stuff. Thank you for sharing.
One con with the retractable cover is cold climates where ice forms. Unless it's rolled up completely dry, ice inevitably forms in the box and jams it all up.
Take a look at the WeatherTech. Its made by Lomax who sells it for a bit cheaper. Almost flush with the bed rail, trifold aluminum but it has another quick release under the front panel. Pull that and the whole thing comes off in a few seconds.
I have a soft tri fold tonneau on my Raptor, I use mine to cut down on the air drag in the bed, and to keep the groceries dry. I don't keep anything in my bed that is going to make a thief happy, unless they like reusable shopping bags. 🤣 Eventually at some point I want to get a hard shell Leer topper so that I can make it more camper friendly until I find the right pull behind camper. Great reviews though, thanks as always. Appreciate you!
The BakFlip MX4 (Tri-Fold) allows you to shut the tail gate before closing bed cover....OR after closing the bed cover...it doesn't matter. Very nice feature!
Hey, nice young man, you forgot the problem for those of us in the rain, until just at the end. The only cover that works against water, mildew, dampness; tonneau hard cover. It looks like the barricade may solve the rain issue-but for it’s main limitation of lost usage due to stowage.
We always use a soft rolling cover from truxedo. It keeps stuff protected from rain and flying out in the wind. It also rolls completely out of the way allowing use of the whole bed.
Getting a tri fold put on tomorrow through line-x. Come to find out their house brand "Truck Gear" is a rebranded bakflip mx4. Comes at the same price point but includes a "LIFETIME" warranty. Its hard aluminum with a plastic finish texture. You can pay a bill more and get one sprayed with line-x if you choose too but i did not. Loved the comparison. It just came too late as i just made my purchase literally early today. No regrets still.
@@NOSfusion Honestly i love my truck gear trifold and would buy another for my next truck. It hasnt faded, gaskets havent warped and nothing has broke in over a year. If i had to knock anything at all and its just the nature of a trifold is it will have a small water leak by your tailgate. The 2 aluminum rails that run down each side of the bed can accumulate a little water and its design dumps them at your tailgate. This isnt to alarm you or should it scare you away from buying one. I would say during a rainstorm that amount would equate to a few teaspoons per side. I plan on soldering two bungs in or find a screw in fitting and just run a small hose down each side, super simple fix but isnt really needed. Everything else stays 99% dry. Ive used it in the upright position to move furniture, get a load of dirt, and works really good. Again the lifetime warranty is a no brainer when your choosing to drop $900+ on one of these. Dont take my word for it and go to a line-x store and look at one. Roll up ones get water in the hinges that freeze in the winter and jack knife, others have felt backing that collect dirt, and some take up way too much bed space. I would highly recommend this truck gear and its not just me being biased.
07slowbalt Wow. Thank you for the thorough write up. I’m between the Diamondback SE or the Bakflip MX4 Tri-fold. Leaning towards the MX4 because it folds out of the way completely. I think you just sold me on a tri-fold. Have a good one, thanks again
@@NOSfusion no problem at all. Just an fyi the truck gear is 100% identical to the backflip mx4 other than a different badge. Line-x told me this and i confirmed it since my brother has a mx4 on his gmc. Just keep in mind the mx4 does NOT come with a lifetime warranty whereas the truck gear does.
Had an undercover 1piece on my Titan, had it put on to go on a trip. Drove from Pa to Tennessee. By the time I got there the cover rubbed the paint off on the bedside. Then 3 times in the next 10 years had the rivets pop. I fixed it twice the third time I scraped it. Will never buy another!
The Peragon looks to be the best folding option I have seen. Haven’t used one yet but the ease of removal and not blocking your back window makes it a lot more appealing than a Tri-fold and for the same price.
Can somebody make a hard cover (like the last one in this video) with maybe a scissor lift on each side so that the cover goes straight up uniformly? That sure would be nice for picking up a dresser or other large piece of furniture.
All have there perks and there down sides i've had a cheap soft roller in the past and hate having very little security along with my tailgate didn't lock on my 2011 tacoma at all but don't want the storage in my bed to take a hit either and still want to maintain vizibility. Im planning on buying the Sentry Tonneau cover from Truxedo for my 2018 F150 for best of everything except you loose the ability to open it half way. Just need to get the wife on board and get the price right like the 15-20% sales that come this time of year right after tax season is over.
With the last cover, all you'll need is a few ratchet straps and you'll be good to go. I've had it on my '15 for 2 year's now and have strapped all types of building material's to it, as well as dressers and it's still solid. Only thing he did not mention is that if you have a feature on your truck to where you can pop your tailgate from your keyless entry or from your key fob, the edge of the cover wrap's over the edge of the tailgate, so that'll be a no go.
I’ve owned the hard tonneau undercover 10 years previous truck, great cover as mentioned if you plan to leave on the truck, although it’s a two person job getting it on or off, my wife did not enjoy helping either! lol
FYI, as I’m sure you may already know the revolver X cover is not waterproof, although its a nice option I would not recommend. Mine leaks on every rain storm and I’ve even gotten some snow inside. Tony- In Chicago
Thanks for the honest feedback Tony- although I worry there is something wrong with the install if you're getting rain (and snow!?) inside your bed. -Justin
Personally I like the soft roll up covers. They don't show it in the video since it's really similar to the first one. But I don't keep stuff back there, at least not long enough to worry about. And it's pretty out of the way when rolled up. Velcro to put down easy. Bars under it for support of light ish stuff. If you put a plank of wood up there you can hold all kinds of things when tied down.
The solid cover was great back in the day before locking tailgates because you couldn't open the tailgate but with new locking tailgates the tri-fold and rolling are better for security. The locks on the solid covers are very much for show, just push up and it will pop open. Because they overhang, there is plenty of a lip to get your palm under to push it up...now let's be honest, getting the stuff out of sight is the biggest deal because no criminal is going to go and pop open every cover in a parking lot. The retractable cover is definitely the most secure, that seems like it would be pretty hard to break into, I wanted that but I frequently use the whole bed under my trifold. One nice thing about that is sometime you can open it all the way then let it rest on what you're hauling instead of blocking the back glass. Great video btw, lots of options out there and not a lot of side-by-side comparisons.
very useful video, my previous trucks all were used and came with covers I kept using. This is my first foray into picking out a cover myself and this video helped. thanks.
Wish they would make one for the older small pick ups. I have a 2011 Ford Ranger. I would love to have a hard cover to keep the snow out of the bed and keep things clean looking.
The Extang Classic Platinum and similar Black Max where sadly both discontinued. A shame because they were reasonably priced, durable, I had one for 10 years and it was still nice. The best thing was they were 99% water tight unlike many of the very costly products on the market now.
I personally have the Bakflip F1 trifold tonneau for my 2018 F150 Platinum. Went with this particular one because you can open and close it without opening the tailgate. Hands down the BEST tri fold cover (also FRP).
Another thing and a reason I went with the soft cover for my racetruck is weight. I wanted a cover but didn't want to add alot of weight. My trifold on my platinum is heavy but awesome! the soft cover only weighs about 10 lbs... just something else to think about. Great video
Undercover se is still the king. I have a painted lux version of the SE and loving it still. And I agree with the con for large item. However, the SE is very strong, you can walk over it or even haul an ATV on it. So you can strap down large item over it
Word itself makes some really nice Tonnele covers that you can get installed when you buy the vehicle my raptor came with one I don’t know why your raptor didn’t unless it was just something of an option that you didn’t get.
AmericanTrucks Ford One warning don’t buy one called the gator cover I bought one of those for my other F1 50 set it all up in the bed it was the canister type that you mount to the back of the bed once I got it and I slid it forward and pulled it back it seem to work fine the next time I slid it forward it collapsed into the bed and broke into pieces luckily after jumping through hoops I got it returned and they gave me my money back after that I went to Ford and got a solid one piece cover which was another mistake you really can’t carry anything in the bed with one of those solid covers. It looks great but it’s useless my rafter had the accordion type which I really liked
Can you screw on some steel or hard aluminum plates on the bottom of the cover? once they cut and see that they know they screwed. then all you have to do is replace the soft cover material.
I would like to see the Xceed from Extang in your video. Note: The Undercover has pull straps where thieves can break into by using a coat hanger. I bought an Extant Xceed cover and am happy with it!
I just installed the GMC “REV” branded BakFlip Revolver X2 on my 2500HD; snagged it for $866 shipped to my dealer. I definitely don’t expect it to be as strong and certainly not as weather proof as a hard cover (or cap), but it’s a good compromise between accessibility, looks, and ease of use.
Liked to have seen a water test on each to see which offers best weather protection. Also like to have heard more about security, don’t need a knife if I can walk up and easily roll/slide/push a cover back.
I was curious I just purchased a truck it is one of those hydraulic hardcover hardcovers that only opens halfway.. The cover itself has a lock with the key however E however what kind of piece do I need or part number to hook up to the truck so I can actually lock my truck cover
I have a rolling soft cover. It's very easy to get full access, works in heat and cold and cost $400. It would fail the "knife" test but to be fair I wonder how the trifold cover would stand up to a crowbar? I'm not a criminal but knives can be a felony yet it's always legal to carry a crowbar. It's probably a good compromise choice for many people.
Hell meth heads will use power tools to take your catalytic convertor. To me unless you have something locked up in a gang box, it can be stolen in under 5 minutes with a common tool like a crowbar, knife, small hack saw, etc.
Hello. Would the barricade pass the Stanley knife through the slot test? There's a video of a mountain top roller getting opened by cutting the rubber that holds the slats together.
With the last bed cover you showed, if perhaps you will be hauling stuff for a while how do you remove it ( video ) or do you have to take it in shop to be removed. Thanks
There may be an opportunity for us to do that in a later video- the point of this video however was to briefly run down the major styles you'll find on the site. -Justin
I'm looking to replace my Bak G2 cover since it has started to fall apart and warp. I considering that retractable but its size when closed is a bit of a con. That 4 fold may just be the best option afterall although it is plastic and will most likely fade after a a couple years like my Bak did. Truck is outdoors year around.
Really hard to decide which one is best for me cause I’m thinking of getting the bed cover with tool box underneath that, like I don’t want a fragile bed cover for thieves but I don’t want a cover that take too much space, but great vid😎
Question, I see a lot of 5'5" or 5'7", I measured the from back window to end of door (5'10"). Do I need a cover top that is 5'10 or does the 5'7" work if I want to make sure my stuff is secured when I lock the door?
Great info thanks! I’ve been told to avoid retractable covers because they can get off track or crooked and messed up but I think it’s the best option for me because of easy acres and room for my fifth wheel hitch! Is it something I need to worry about?
Are there any good covers along the lines of the retractable cover that would work with a tool box as well, or can you modify that retractable one to fit infront of the box?
Extang makes a few tool box compatible options that you can find on our site! -Justin www.americantrucks.com/extang-solid-fold-20-toolbox-tonneau-cover-1518-w-65-ft-8-ft-bed.html

IMO it’s the only one without any real cons, because in my experience if you need the whole bed above the top of the box then your vision through the back window is already gone, and at that point the cover is now protecting your window from something sliding forward and smashing it. Example being loading a quad, I’ve seen many a rear window bite the dust when one crashed into the glass, but the cover would prevent that from happening.
Didnt really think about it till now but you're right with the visibility part being gone if you have something youre moving sitting taller than the bed rails.
The con is that you can't see out your back window when you have something in the bed and it's blocking the rear window completely.

The BIG Con is that the Tri-Fold design is the one design for which you cannot then add a Bed Rack. So a HUGE con for many of us.
But if something slams into your cover vs. the window, wouldn't it damage the cover? Given the cover is $800, might be better to break the window.

I know quite a few people with trucks, and I've never heard of anyone getting their bed cover cut. I also have the Truxport. Works good!
You don't need a knife to open a snap on cover... Simply un-snap it!
its a guy thing.
The point was to demonstrate the ease of cutting with any 'soft' cover as described @ 2:50. -Justin

BackFlip is highly vulnerable to hail damage, have had damage to 2 of them. Pretty expensive cover to look that bad from small hail storm.
How about a video detailing tool boxes and cover combinations?

Have you looked at the Diamondback and or Renegade covers. Which one did you like
Are the tonneau covers water proof or do you need to drill drain holes?

Please post size tire and wheel size! Also do you have a link to those specific wheels. LOVE how this truck looks.
I would choose the hard trifold tonneau cover one and in 2nd place the hard roll up.
Good choice! :) -Justin
I don’t disagree; the only thing I don’t care for about the hard folding covers is that they block the rear window when folded up.
Paragon cover review would be interesting.
Cant you use a coat hanger to open the tri fold?
wagsbro 44 right? That’s what I was thinking.
Can you do an episode on pickup sliding rear windows. Are they worth it ?
also check out Diamond Back covers - you can put a load on top of them
I've heard good things but unfortunately we don't sell them at this time. -Justin
I personally have the Bakflip F1 trifold tonneau for my 2018 F150 Platinum. Went with this particular one because you can open and close it without opening the tailgate. Hands down the BEST tri fold cover (also FRP).
Michael Godsey if you can open it without opening the tailgate, doesn’t that mean it’s not secure against thieves?
Yeah, you can use a coat hanger
Diamond back HD is the best cover
I’m really surprised it wasn’t in this lineup.
Another thing and a reason I went with the soft cover for my racetruck is weight. I wanted a cover but didn't want to add alot of weight. My trifold on my platinum is heavy but awesome! the soft cover only weighs about 10 lbs... just something else to think about. Great video
Have a question for the trifold and the hinged can you drive the truck either the cover up just curious
How does the Hard Roll Up compare to Hard tri-fold durability wise? Would you say Hard Tri-fold would be a better choice for durability?
Pro of the soft roll up, with velcro, is full use of bed with no rear view block
great video! off topic but whats the wheel set up on that stx?
👌
Should have thrown in one or two of those truck bed toppers that make it look like an excursion
Undercover se is still the king. I have a painted lux version of the SE and loving it still. And I agree with the con for large item. However, the SE is very strong, you can walk over it or even haul an ATV on it. So you can strap down large item over it
I love the barricade! I wunderbar if you can get it for raptor gen 1 and in germany too
I'm gonna attempt to take mine off tomarrow I ant a tri fold wish me luck thanks for video
Word itself makes some really nice Tonnele covers that you can get installed when you buy the vehicle my raptor came with one I don’t know why your raptor didn’t unless it was just something of an option that you didn’t get.
It is an optional part and Ford's tonneau covers are produced by THI, the same manufacturer that produces covers for BAK, Extang and more. -Justin
AmericanTrucks Ford Sorry my iPad likes to screw up everything I say after I hit send! Obviously I meant Ford not word.
Does it shake or vibrates when u drive
Liked to have seen a water test on each to see which offers best weather protection. Also like to have heard more about security, don’t need a knife if I can walk up and easily roll/slide/push a cover back.
You can't roll/slide/push these back as they are all locked with the rear tailgate. -Justin
Great looking truck. What are the lift/wheel details?
Tim Butcher I was wondering the same. It might be a level kit with 33.
Thanks for the great video. On the second cover, can you drive with it folded all the way up safely?
is there a tri fold that can open near the window to access internal tool boxes?
A knife is easy because you can put in your pocket and take it anywhere, a crowbar you have to carry which can be a hassle.
Hell meth heads will use power tools to take your catalytic convertor. To me unless you have something locked up in a gang box, it can be stolen in under 5 minutes with a common tool like a crowbar, knife, small hack saw, etc.
Excellent video. I ordered a hard tri-fold cover today.
I want the 1 piece for security, but I stack and pack so I'll probably have to get an aluminum folder. It should do fine, as long as I can lock it.
Hello. Would the barricade pass the Stanley knife through the slot test?
There's a video of a mountain top roller getting opened by cutting the rubber that holds the slats together.
I’m looking to buy one soon.. with my truck being a step side does that matter any? 1999 f150
If your bed has Line X will that impede you on installing any of the hardware on these covers?
Awesome video. I just bought a 2017 Raptor and this really helped decide on a proper bed cover.
Thanks Kevin! Glad to hear we were able to help. -Justin
Great reviews. What are a few you'd recommend for an 8 ft bed?
What’s that trucks wheel/tire/lift setup? Looks real sharp
Stock on a set of wider 33s! -Zach
With the last bed cover you showed, if perhaps you will be hauling stuff for a while how do you remove it ( video ) or do you have to take it in shop to be removed. Thanks
If you are hauling something in the back and it slides forward and hits the rolled up cover, you’re screwed. It will bend it
I got a tri-fold cover and really do not feel the need for anything else.
I have a trifold and hate it. I would not get another for many reasons. But for some they may be ok
@@BigRed334 Why do you hate it? I'm trying to decide on one now.
Right same here lol very satisfied with my tri-fold
It would be nice if you compared a bunch of different soft covers. Diffs in latching mecs, bows, etc.
There may be an opportunity for us to do that in a later video- the point of this video however was to briefly run down the major styles you'll find on the site. -Justin
great video - thx! does there rolling cover come off easily for storage etc?
You didn’t add the soft Velcro roll up tonneau. I think is great.
You're right, we kind of just lumped the soft covers into one category for the sake of time. -Justin
I like the one piece painted covers, they look the nicest.
I like your videos , very informative and direct
Thanks for watching!! -Zach
Really hard to decide which one is best for me cause I’m thinking of getting the bed cover with tool box underneath that, like I don’t want a fragile bed cover for thieves but I don’t want a cover that take too much space, but great vid😎
Thanks for watching! -Zach
Where can you buy the lock for the hard fiberglass cover. Help
Question, I see a lot of 5'5" or 5'7", I measured the from back window to end of door (5'10"). Do I need a cover top that is 5'10 or does the 5'7" work if I want to make sure my stuff is secured when I lock the door?
Truxcedo Sentry has been flawless
Great review! What do you think about the Roll-N-lock bed cover?
Great info thanks! I’ve been told to avoid retractable covers because they can get off track or crooked and messed up but I think it’s the best option for me because of easy acres and room for my fifth wheel hitch! Is it something I need to worry about?
No don't worry about it.
You mentioned the tri fold can hold up to 400 lbs, how does the retractable cover compare?
I was thinking the same thing. I'm guessing that it won't tolerate much weight without collapsing.
I go witht he soft roll up. Hard covers are a pain.
Are there any good covers along the lines of the retractable cover that would work with a tool box as well, or can you modify that retractable one to fit infront of the box?
Extang makes a few tool box compatible options that you can find on our site! -Justin
