  • December 19, 2023 - Downtown Santa Monica witnessed a tense situation today when Legion Security, the newly appointed security firm for the area, dealt with a homeless individual causing a disturbance. The incident occurred in the bustling downtown sector, where the man, described as acting erratically, approached passersby in a manner that raised concerns.
Legion Security Officers, who began their patrol duties in the area starting December 1, were quick to respond. They attempted to peacefully escort the individual away from the crowded downtown streets. However, the situation escalated when the man reportedly became aggressive, making physical contact with the security personnel.
Santa Monica Police Officers arrived on the scene shortly after to assist. Despite their intervention, the man chose to walk away from both the police and security officers. The police have stated that they will continue to monitor his activities and are prepared to take further action if necessary.
As the man departed, he was observed banging on windows and causing further disturbances to people walking on the street. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced in managing public safety and homelessness in urban areas.
Legion Corporation, hired by Downtown Santa Monica, Inc., is tasked with supplementing security services in the area. Their team, operational from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, is responsible for responding to non-emergency situations. These include addressing anti-social behavior, aggressive panhandling, public disturbances, and suspicious activities among other duties.
This recent event underscores the complexities surrounding urban security and the balance needed in addressing the needs of all community members, including the homeless population. Downtown Santa Monica, Inc. and Legion Security continue to work together in ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike.

Agreed but that is quite difficult to do. Alot of it mental health, or financial situations that have put then on the streets. Housing them doesn't always work and there are always issues. The city sees this as both un-winable and as a financial burden if they implemented something. Taxes would have to be raised. We have the same here in Vancouver, Canada!

@@madusan1 It was the Supreme Courts in USA/Can. that made a judgement that you couldn't keep these people locked up. Yes they were locked up, and yes they were abused.. But it was Govt. that thought dumping them on the streets, that they would fit into the general population . and then said Govts. could sell off the lands the old hospitals were on to their friends.

I thought there was a law that allowed law-enforcement to take in the custody, those with obvious mental condition, and those with severe substance-abuse/mental health issues. The guy would be the poster boy for that new law, but they didn’t do anything but let him be a danger to himself and others not understanding a thing he’s doing.

I'm amazed how patient the Santa Monica police are. Here in Texas they usually only send one on a call and he'll kick your ass if you don't comply in short order. I sent one of the SMCU video's to a retired cop friend and he really had a laugh. He said the only way he ever got backup was when a shooting had occurred or one was imminent. I really enjoy the videos.

I have to send out a huge respect to the security officers. Especially the primary one who had unbelievable restraint when approached by man into his personal space and when the male made contact with him. You sir have a respect for others I have not seen alot. Thank you for your professionalism and demeanour. Thank you SMCU for highlighting this interaction. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦!
