FORD FLEX WON'T START WITH KEY BUT STARTS WHEN STARTER IS JUMPED

  • In today's video we take a look at a 2012 Ford Flex W/ a 3.5l V6 engine. The owners complaint is that the vehicle will not crank when using the key in the ignition. However, the mechanic is able to crank and start the vehicle using a screwdriver to jump the terminals on the starter solenoid. Once they start the engine up, the vehicle runs and drives normal. The owner has already replaced the starter motor and the shop already had a locksmith come and look at it. According to the locksmith, there is nothing wrong with the key, however the mechanic told me that he found several codes when using a scanner to scan the vehicle. Follow along as I diagnose the problem and fix this car.

    I'll suspect that at some point, this vehicle was on a used car lot. Probably one of the kind that sell to those with less than stellar credit. Installed a remote shut off switch (badly) to insure payment. I'm thinking this switch either received a shut-off command, or it malfunctioned.

    That was a real good one!! The explanation of how to use the data pids on the scan tool to verify problems was great. I was suspecting that the key wasn’t turning the ignition switch to the start position. I have had that problem a few times. But the scan tool data pids showed that wasn’t the case. Also your breakdown of the wiring diagram was superb!! Thank u!!

      @That V8 Life I had to cut hours of footage into a 30 minute video. Then I cut out the dead space between me talking. I try and make these videos fast paced so that viewers don't get bored and lose interest. I sat down to start the edit of this video at 8am and by the time I uploaded the video, it was almost 1am. That included rendering time, designing and making the thumbnail, writing the description, adding tags, choosing ad placement and finally getting it uploaded to RUclips. Thanks for watching!

    I love your diagnostic steps. They are always very informational and helpful.
    I am from Nigeria and this bypass is quite common here for security. You have to press switch to re-establish the connection for the vehicle to start otherwise this is what happens. The security switch is usually hidden in various places and my last car had it hidden inside the coin holder close to the driver door. Unless someone tells you it is there, you can never know where it is nor start the car.
    Very informational.
    Thank you

I especially like your explanation of the various codes on the scan tool and particularly your explanation of the wiring diagram for this vehicle. Your videos are invaluable! As I’m retired, your videos help me as I don’t have a lot of extra money laying around to have my vehicles worked on. I was wondering if you could recommend a good scan tool like you use that’s not too pricey but a good one?

    I had a shop that had the same issue, turned out to be a breathalyzer install. There's only a few certified shops here in michigan that does them. They send the technicians off to learn how to install them and one guy here I visited every two weeks(servicing their paint system on a failed business venture). He was pretty good. I would think as good as anyone in your field. Figured out stuff the dealerships just ignore and forget about. Yeah, the car was in a wreck, who cares about it now kind of attitude. The dealership didn't spend a huge part of their savings and income buying this and have a deer run out in front of them. The dealership would have the car for months and just give it back and say its junk. Have "the laptop guy" come in and fix it in 20 minutes. Those guys did them cheap and banged them out. The guy here would solder the wires and heatshrink them and install everything back into the factory loom so youd never know. When the car is repoed then the system should be fully removed.....

  • @andybub45
    @andybub45 2 года назад +2

    It was probably a kill switch used by some sketchy used car lot to disable it when someone didn’t pay. Or maybe a breathalyzer interlock, but I would think that the wiring would be removed if they removed the breathalyzer.

    So why did the powerprobe show a ground when it was connected to the relay load output? When you applied 12v, it never got to the starter (because of the open in the crimp,) yet it showed ground without the 12v being applied. Perhaps the crimp wasn't completely open, still connecting through the starter motor to ground, but not strong enough to allow current flow. And if the dark green wire were completely grounded, what would happen when you apply 12v from the power probe? I suppose you're relying on the tool's circuit breaker to trip?

    I had a similar problem on my car. If I put power direct to the solenoid then it would turn over. After tracing the wiring I discovered that the cause was an aftermarket immobiliser that had failed. I had another car that started intermittently - this took a long time to diagnose and it was burnt contacts on the ignition switch which I only discovered when I took it apart (every time you turn the key the contacts slide over each other and wear over time).
