yo imagine being only valued because of your quirk all your life, not receiving any sort of care after being attacked and choked by a villain for twenty minutes and then praised for your quirk once again. no fucking wonder he thinks he has to prove himself, he doesn't think he's worth anything more than his quirk's worth. i think that's partly where his distaste for Izuku is coming from. Deku actually cares about him: "He's pushing himself", "He really uses that?" (referring to the recoil from his gauntlets), "You could have really hit your head!", "He's been carrying this with him the whole time, blaming himself". Katsuki doesn't know how to receive care, he's not used to people actually giving a shit about him. that's why he almost breaks his brave face after being kidnapped, when All Might says "It must have been really scary but it's all right now 👍" and he yells at that going "I wasn't scared, you idiot!!!" and why he pushes away from All Might's little hug after their fight with Deku. when Deku gives him a hand again in the midle of the fight he goes "Don't worry about me!! What's wrong with you?! Fight me!" he's not used to that and that's why he takes Deku's concern as an insult, like he's being looked down on.

For me, I think the actual turning point for Bakugo was after the combat training. When Midoriya meets him outside the school , Bakugo admits that he actually lost to Midoriya, he acknowledged that Todoroki was stronger than him , and accepted the mistakes he did during the training(agreeing to Momo).
This was the first time in the series that he shed his ego and accepted his limits.
He literally cried and vowed 'that' would be his starting line. Such a beautiful moment and he kept his word. Best character in the series!

Saddest part is that even Beast Jeanist who was supposed to be his first mentor ditch him and only concentrates in him "looking evil", yet Bakugou, as shown in the lattest chapters, latched to something as small as that and was waiting for Jeanist to reveal his Hero name. Allmight is in Dekus corner, Aizawa in Shinso, Endeavor in Todoroki, Iida has his brother, and the rest ad actual mentors in those with whom they made the internship. No one has teach him anything about how to use his power, he trains and studies and is really strick with himself to the point that he will always go to sleep at eight. All his moves are his creation, that is why he gets pissed at Deku for stealing what he spend God knows how long creating

Bakugo is the kid who didn't have connections and gifts, he's the every kid who doesn't have ANY plot armor, everything he achieve, he does in spite of all the "main characters" who gets quirks handed to them, birth rights, and the crowd always rooting for them instead... As someone who wasn't born with a silver spoon and will never have the luck midoriya-main character has, I just relate to him more, I want the kid with drive and dedication to achieve something cause we all know the real world bakugo would have the whole world against him... 5:30 i totally agree with this point so much. it’s obvious at this point (or rlly any point past s1) that bakugou, todoroki and midoriya would form the big three of class 1a. there’s a lot of great kids and great characters there, but the others just aren’t quite as.... much as them. as driven, as traumatized, as passionate. there’s just something that sets them apart. todoroki is walking in endeavors shadow, but even without that in the class he’s set apart by his attitude. some of the kids like to keep to themselves and that’s just what it is, but todoroki always went the extra mile to build another wall between himself and everyone else. midoriya is on the other side of the spectrum in every possible way, everyone notices that all might pays special attention to him, he’s bright and cheerful as many in the class are but he has a spirit and conviction that makes him different. bakugou, on the other hand, is just bakugou. in middle school, his quirk was enough to make him stand out, there was no need for anything else. he was smart, he was strong, he was the top. in ua, there’s so many good kids and smart kids. even with his continuous anger issues he’s not special. even in midoriyas day to day life he’s not important anymore. yeah, sure, he antagonizes him every once in a while, makes comments, explodes a few things but literally nobody cares. the only reason he gets noticed in class is when he does something exceptionally smart, but even then it’s nothing like the past 15 years of his life and he’s always closely followed by yaomomo, todoroki, iida and midoriya. this is not something he’s ever experienced, or knows how to deal with. being strong and being loud has always been enough, it’s what made bakugou bakugou, what he received attention for whether that was good or bad attention. by the time the sports festival rolls around he’s already been spending a long, long time slowly watching midoriya improve and stand in the spotlight, while he himself continues to fall and disappears from people’s minds. so, naturally, when he gets the chance to stand in the spotlight, he’s going to make use of that. he’s already picked out his biggest competition and bakugou isn’t stupid, he knows he has a disadvantage against the connections of endeavor and the mentorship of all might. so he does what he’s always done: he gets his ass up and helps himself back into the spotlight. his declaration did exactly what it had to, people listened and watched and paid attention. yes, most of it was negative, he was judged, hated, booed, but people were finally back to acknowledging his existence at all and he badly needed that not only for the more superficial reasons of wanting others to know he’s a hero to look out for & boosting his own ego, but because genuinely, desperately needed to feel a little bit of the acknowledgment he’d known during his entire life.
anyway idk if i made sense lol, i used to hate bakugou up till season 3 and after his breaking point i couldn’t help but look at every single thing he’d done and said up to that point and realize how badly i had misunderstood him. almost every of his actions is spurred by the insane demands and expectations placed on him by society that he grew into, his own desperation and that crazy need to prove himself. he’s such a well written character i could never not adore his development and background.

That's why Bakugou is so relatable to many people, it's not his bullying, it's how he's an ex gifted kid weighed by expectations, he's not perfect, he's made mistakes, and he struggles to reach his goals, that's why when he wins we cheer

Bakugou being called an underdog is really unexpected, but it make sense. Todoroki is blessed with a technically no weakness quirk and deku got the number 1 hero on his back and possibly could have 8 quirks, hell tokoyami quirk is probably one of the most strongest, the only drawback is that it’s weak to light but this can be trained to the point it’s doesn’t even effect dark shadow anymore. It give me more respect to bakugou for simply doesn’t give a fuck about any of this and keep pushing himself.

  • @kamakazines4901
    @kamakazines4901 3 года назад +10

Came back to this video to give it a rewatch, and it's still great! Bakugo being the underdog really does make a massive difference in the story!
There is one thing you said that I disagree with, though, that that is that Bakugo doesn't really change.
While I agree that the way the story frames him changes more dramatically than Bakugo changes himself, he still has more moments of change than anyone else in the story.
After almost every single significant interaction he has on screen, Bakugo learns a lesson, internalizes it, and puts it into practice by the next interaction.
A few of my favorite examples are:
    1. Bakugo learning that unkown enemies can surprise you in the calvary battle against Monoma, and then accurately listing Ururaka's quirk before their fight, even before she earned his respect.
    2. Bakugo learning that using the strength of teammates is it's own form of strength in the 2 v All Might fight, and then allowing Dark Shadow to take the glory and defeat Moon Fish in the forest.
    3. Bakugo realizing that his inability to save himself put All Might in danger in his fight with All For One, and then yelling at the low priority victims to save themselves in the license exam.
Before Monoma, Bakugo didn't bother remembering which 'extras' had which quirks. Before fighting All Might, Bakugo saw relying on someone else's strength as weakness. Before All For One, Bakugo saw victims as weaklings who were useless without a hero to save them.
He is open to having his preconceptions challenged, and that has allowed him to grow and change quickly, because he is doing it in small, rapid-fire steps.
His changes don't have one big, dramatic moment though, and his anger issues and social shortcomings hog most of the attention while he's on screen.
It's actually kinda terrifying... he's been doing what he tells Deku, that he can watch and grow stronger, all along... but only at the end of season 3 does he humble himself enough to apply that to his fighting style and quirk usage, rather than just his worldview... and that's gonna make him a BEAST in combat.

The underdog, that's what I've been saying to my friends ugh but no they all "he's not an underdog, he was praised for his quirk since he was kid." but yeah, ever wonder how he is classified as one of the strongest student in UA without anyone training him? The anime never show his training but that his skilles proves that bakugo trained himself to control his quirk and work on a flexible fighting style. He's fast, agile, determined and smart. When he was fighting with midoriya at ground beta, people around me always say "bakugo is lucky the kick didn't touch him." No, the kick was aimed to him but he dodged it. "Your moves are predictable, even if you attack me I able to dodge it. When you add a punch, I was pissed off." He can predict midoriya's moves except when midoriya punch him where he didn't expect that. He clearly thinks fast and has fast reflexes. People always undermined his skills because "Nah, midoriya and todoroki is stronger than bakugo. He's lucky is surviving till now because of his quirk. All he do is barking, no bite." You know if we talk about quirk strength, kaminari is an example who can be a really strong hero student with his quirk. But he still don't know how to control his quirk yet that's why he always said he's weak. Clearly if you think bakugo only survived the whole competition/event at UA because of his quirk, proves that he is an underdog.

Things also changed for me in Kamino! I have to admit it feels like great validation to see Bakugou "off trying to save people like Deku" even before the fight after the licence exam is great! I noticed it but wrote it off as me reading too much into things, or just Kaminari and Kirishima keeping him there. This take is so much better, and glad someone else thought that!

Amazing video and amazing editing! While I actually always liked Bakugou (because I found his outbursts ridiculous and funny at first), I think he became my favourite character during his fight with Uraraka. I actually found the Sports Tournament to be where many of Bakugou's morals and aspirations where shown in plain sight, but somehow not obvious enough to see the depth of his character. He gained my respect through that fight and I started understanding his character once he fought against Todoroki as well. He reminded me a bit of old warriors and knights in both western and asian culture, where honour is key in winning a battle. I found it so interesting that, for someone as ambitious as him who only wants to be the best, he would only want to win if it's a deserved victory.

I agree! His journey is pretty fascinating, you'd expect a character so hopped up on wanting to "be the best" to take any opportunity he can to win. But in his eyes a victory against an opponent who didn't try their absolute best isn't actually a victory. Its actually a great example of good sportsmanship and is a really admirable quality. Also thank you i'm glad you enjoyed the video :)

i analysed bakugou a bit when i watched the show but i never realised that he was the underdog and that midoriya wasn't. bakugou is my hero because of his drive and determination. when i need to get motivated to do something, i just think of him. he was always my favourite character all the way from episode 1 where he said he was a perfectionist iirc. that's what got me hooked onto his character development. perfectionist characters are my favourite. i found his panic attack after the training battle in s1 to be very interesting and it just got me more invested in his character. i *really* liked his battles in the sports festival and analysing his character after he beat uraraka. so bakugou has always been a favourite of mine. i relate to him in terms of always wanting being the best, seeing a victory as not a victory if the other one held back, and always being afraid that someone will eventually catch up to me.

I never hated Bakugo. In the first season where he was being a jerk to Midoriya and bullying him actually, I had a feeling that it can't just be as simple as that and we have yet a lot to expect from his character, it was just a simple hunch that he will get to show us more. I disliked the way he behaved and how he treated those around him, but somehow I couldn't bring myself to actually be mad or think low of him, more like I kept waiting for the breaking point to come. And throughout the next 3 seasons he grew on me, oh he did, probably more than any other of the characters, and I support him in every way. 😊❤️‍🩹 Plus the fact, that the author himself actually regrets writing the "go kill yourself" line at the beginning, because it's one of those things that started off the resentment towards Bakugo from fans and made them do him wrong right from the start. And it's also something he wrote before he actually decided in which direction he wants Bakugo to go, but now the aftereffect is too difficult to reverse.

"This is why no one likes Bakugo at first, because you're not supposed to."
Me, who has a LONG history of loving the asshole characters and loved him immediately: 😅😅😅😅

There is a SERIOUS parallel between Bakugo and Kana Arima from Oshi no Ko.

A bit in the war arc made me actually like him. And then another bit during the lisence exam. Spoiler down abit
These bits were when he took a blow for deku that could of killed him and when he tossed the grenade to kaminari really showed he can be a team player

I didnt hate him, but I did *strongly dislike* him. But only for the first few episodes. It was right up until after the sludge villain, when he catches up to Deku, and looks like he's going to apologize but then starts yelling instead and stomps off in a huff. That, for me at least, was the moment I looked at this guy and said "Oooh, you're the Gajeel of this show, aren't you?" From then on I was sold.

I didn't like Bakugo at first like you, I have come to the conclusion that we and Bakugo both have similar struggles, which is when we tie our worth the some damn letters in the alphabet.

"You're supposed to hate him at the start".
Me: Welp, I never got the memo.
Edit: this just made me realize that I tend to dislike main characters. At least more than secondary characters and villains. They're more relatable than MC.

Ok this is totally my opinion you don’t have to agree but I honestly feel the only reason Deku is improving or winning is because he takes notes if he didn’t take notes he wouldn’t have improved himself at all we see him copy moves from other people multiple times he even wanted to give Ochaco a plan to win so she could defeat Bakugou . Another thing is the only reason Todoroki defeated Deku was because Deku had talked to endeavor who told Deku to tell Todoroki to use his fire side When Todoroki was fighting Bakugou he didn’t use his fire side since he daddy issues got to him Todoroki would never have used his fire side if it weren’t for Deku talking to endeavor.
Not an opinion but I saw somewhere in google that Bakugou dad actually wanted to become a hero and almost became one but then switched to being a designer so Bakugou kind of has himself a motivator oh another thing is Bakugou mom is emotionally abusive in the episode where Aizawa goes to their home to talk about dorms you see her hit him in the head calling him weak and telling him it’s his fault he was in that situation.

IDK I hate him but i dont want to hate him. And the reason is beacuse It's not a good thing to bully other people beacuse I know the feeling when someone is bulling you. But its true what you told in this video and later he will become a better person. He was a bit annoing with that angryness, but now i dont hate him.

Bakugo lost the exam because he didn't save anyone and was rude to the people asking to be saved????? what do you mean he lost the exam for saving people

    • @TheLunchTimeCrew
      @TheLunchTimeCrew  3 года назад +3

What I meant was that instead of rushing into fight as he normally he would, he _tried_ to go out and save people. But of course Bakugo being Bakugo just got angry with the people. The point is, instead of sticking to his guns and focusing on combat he made an attempt to be more like Midoriya and he tried to focus on saving people, but he completely messed it up and it cost him.

There nothing bad about bakugou being an asshole but unfortunately MHA genre really screwed him over. Ask why? Well what do hero do? And judge bakugou as a hero and find the problem.
Bear in mind that the Heroes of MHA are judge by their accomplishment ( ie beating villains & saving lives) not by how strong they are. And I find it hard to defend bakugou being an asshole when he don't have any heroic accomplishment.
This is made worse when you look at deku accomplishment. Deku fought and won against stain, mascular, overhaul, gentle, lady nagant, villains of dark hero arc and shirigaki/afo. He also saves kota, eri and several dozens people. Compare that to bakugou who only beats two villains and saves four people.
