We took him to a wildlife rehab, but had to bring him back home as he did not get along with other crows. His name is Peach :-) We have quite a few videos of him.
I've got one in my neighborhood that pushes the door open with his head if it's not latched. He's a red bar and I call him Johnson. Sometimes when I transfer the birdseed from the bucket to the jar, I spill a little bit of it on the carpet. If Johnson is nearby and he sees that the door is open, he comes right on in and cleans up the seed that got spilled. He's a character, and friends and neighbors are amazed and amused by this routine. He has also picked up a few new human friends who've changed their outlook on pigeons because of him. I think they really are natural born comedians.
@@Zilch79 they have reduced my stress levels to near zero. I am certain that without them, I would have lost my mind in these last two years. They have really helped to preserve my sanity. People who go to shrinks and get loaded up on pills ought to spend some time with the pigeons. Just go to the park and feed them, observe them, and interact with them for a while. I bet most people would see an improvement right away.
They are so crazy but that makes them so sweet, pigeons are the most lovely animals less understood by humans, its so magnificent you are taking care of Henry so well. PS: I have two rescued pigeons and I don´t need to have them at all in a cage, they just love to be in their "home" anyway even if they can be free. They are actually a very hommy good animals.

yes very, you just put in a panty liner and leave henry in there for around 3 hours and then when he's done you can just take him out and replace the panty liner, and then if they get a little dirty just put them in the washing machine.
The water drinking observation is great and 100% correct too. Some smaller finches (like the zebra finches I grew up with) also just "vacuum up" the water, while my current cockatiels have to take a gulp and then lift their head.

You need to peel the sunflower seeds for them. Unlike the song birds, doves and pigeons don't open the shells. You should also only give the sunflower seeds to pigeons and doves as a treat and not as meal because the seeds are too rich in fat for them. It is good that you rescued him. My wife and I have one called Plumeria.
Yeah, too many sunflower seeds. What is great for them and they also tend to love is hemp seed. And so-called trapping mix. I add corn to it (and safflower seeds). And pigeon mix, with peas and the lot. Most of them toss out the wheat in it, though. Mine is currently tearing a paprika/bell pepper plant apart so I guess I'll need to buy some seeds and grow them as this one plant was just the result of some luck. I also should grow some grass.
Cool question! Those are called "wing whirs." It is caused by the shape of their wingtips and feathers swishing through the air, kind of like how a whistle works. It only happens at certain speeds and angles of attack, usually when they take off and land at lower speeds. Also, sometimes you'll hear a "pop, pop, pop" when they take off. Their wings sometimes slap together underneath them on the downstroke, like clapping hands.

He ended up "marrying" one of my wife's plushie fish slippers and building a nest for their hypothetical fish/bird hybrid offspring. Unfortunately, afterwards he got protective of said nest and started attacking us. We had to pass him on to wildlife rehab folks, who did an amazing job and they report that he has a lovely pigeon wife and family now and flies free.
he is very spoiled male and has a strong personality that he attacks and aggressive without a fear , some like that can go to other pigeons and break their eggs and attack them , very beautiful one he can be your friend , you need to clean his house put a pine wood as a bedding the one for cats that wood can suck the water and the color and smell and change it every 3-7 days to keep him healthy and the water you need to change it and wash the pot every day to prevent a bacteria to grow up and makes him sick like ecoli , give him a prevention treatment from coccidosis every 3 months , i lost few nice pigeons because of it they appear and kill quickly . and most pigeons are affected with that
@@Zilch79 that's nice to hear. I hope you got over the sadness of him leaving. How ever, pigeons don't naturally live in cities. They are only here because of breeders. Hence 90% die in the first year of their lifes. The others don't live longer than 2 years because they have nothing to eat, are forced to eat trash, get sick and die etc. In nature, pigeons can live up to 15 years ! But no one really knows this and pigeons can't speak up, talk for themselves. This is so sad and fcked up !
Yeah. I love pigeons! Henry got released in a nice, wild area though with lots of resources. And you're right, the only reason people associate them with trash is because we made them be that way. They're feral animals that were once our messaging system, pets, food, and hobby. Once we no longer need pigeons, we dumped them. It's not cool at all. They're my favorite bird, but they're in a bad ecological position, like so many other species, because of us.

+300 BOY Unfortunately there is now way to train any bird to control their excrement because they don't have the physical means to stop it. Best you can do is use bird pants or lay down protective pads.
Amanda Wolfenbarger Long story, but basically I used to rescue baby pigeons that fell out of their nests, raise and release them. Two of those birds nested at my house and had babies in a shelter I made. We ended up having to care for one of those babies, and when it came time to release it into the wild, he kept coming back into he house every time we opened the door. That baby is Henry.
Zilch79 we saved a 5 day old girl as well. Baby, was happy to have a home here with us. and she does the same thing as Henry in the kitchen. She even is a Blue Check like Henry. we've been wondering if those certain coos are mating demands. as birds can get confused when raised by us. we even got her other Pigeon palls in hopes she would become more of herself. lol nope. always on our shoulder. a blessing and a curse. - hard to clean your house with a bird micro managing you on your shoulder lmao!
spade poet That's great! Hey, one thing that has made life easier with our bird is using puppy pads in his cage. Swap them out every couple days and it's an easy clean up. Also, if you get the ones for people (like they have in the pharmacy) they're the exact same thing as a puppy pad, but cheaper. You can get them on bulk from Amazon and cut them to fit the cage. Actually you can see them in this video. They may help you a bit.

Pigeons are very sociable animals. They love together in flocks. Keeping him alone is really bad for him.
