Making Emotional Bass Music | Au5 In The DAW | Always In A Nightmare

- Опубликовано: 30 апр 2020
- Austin Collins, aka Au5, found it in his heart to do another episode of In The DAW with us, and break down his song Always In A Nightmare, the sequel to his 2018 collaboration with Nytrix, Only In A Dream.
We talk about Using Zynaptiq Morph as a vocoder, the importance of "flow state" in the production process, resampling your own songs, and of course making emotional bass music.
Also, DAW Nation and Au5 just finished our highly anticipated course, The Serum Masterclass! Every knob, button, and setting inside Xfer's Serum is explained in great detail, with a bunch of advanced techniques as well as several bonuses included. Link to the course is down below!

Thanks for having me on again! Its always a pleasure revisiting songs and explaining them.
I've been using Serum since it came out. I watched a video you recently did on 8 Serum tips (ruclips.net/video/iS_k0XDmEOk/видео.html) and realized I know nothing, incredible - i subbed twice, is that good?
thanks a lot fo the insight austin, you da goat.
if au% answers me I wouldpuke like when he listened to Mako looooooooooool.
Is there an actual benifit to the mid side ott ?.
@@penisdubs yes, Stereo Image Depth Saturation.
I guess the best way to improve this series is to keep getting Au5 on here. Forever.
5ever. We ought to just make Austin the official face of DAW Nation at this point :) Glad you're liking the content Renesh!
Au5: *makes the most complex sound ever
also Au5: "So that's quite simple"
hahahaha this sums up pretty much every piece of content I have ever made with Au5.
I hope we get another video with AU5. He does an excellent job explaining at explaining "why" he chose to do something, opposed to "how" he did something. It's very informative, even for producers such as myself who have been making music for 10 years. I think it's important for people to understand "why" instead of "how".
We too love the way he explains the "why" behind his process.. that's why we've had Austin on the show so many times and made the School of Bass with him! Hope you've been able to learn a lot so far. I wouldn't be surprised if you saw more of Au5 x In The Daw in the future :)
AU5 really is the last word in this type of music production. If one absorbs just 5% of the gems he drops, they will become a noticeably better producer.
And that my friend is why we made the School of Bass! Hope you learned a lot this episode and thanks for watching!
Best tutorial for a track breakdown, very much needed, thank you so much for your insight Au5, I hope to give back value one day through my music.
Au5 is a God explaining everything how he does things❤️🔊
Austin is definitely on another level
its safe to say my mind has been melted yet again from another one of these Au5 vidoes but god damn this has helped my mindset in producing so much
⏳✨
at 11:53, the synth austin could not name, is a simple preset from spire
Thanks for the info 5th Ape! Hope you learned a lot in this episode and we appreciate you taking the time to watch.
infinite knowledge, literally
and I N F I N I T E W I N G S
hahahaha
I can't wait! I've been hoping this would happen since the track came out. Can't wait to see how he made those comb basses!
Love to hear that! Hope you learned a lot! Let us know if there's anything we can improve upon in the future
Dude this shit is so crazy, this will take years to get this good, and people only listen for a few minutes and most will not understand the mastery behind it.
That's a good point Michael - that's why you have to be in love with the process. Thanks so much for watching, we hope you learned a lot!
YES FINALLY THE TUTORIAL WE NEED!!!
Nice seeing you here 😄
Hope you learned a lot! Thanks for tuning in!
Very useful info, thank you very much!
1:01:37 love this sound so much
This format has become like 10 times better since Multiplier dropped out
2:52 Mr. Au5, I don't feel so good...
Most underrated RUclips channel. Such an amazing discussion and analysis. Au5 is literally one of the most interesting person in electronic music, and that really resonates through his music as well.
Thanks so much for the kind words Dioxide! He's a remarkable guy and just absolute legend in electronic music. So happy that you're getting some value out of this episode. We have another Au5 course coming soon as well (Alien Weapon!!!) Take care!
@@DAWNation I can't wait! I've been using his tracks as reference a lot recently for my melodic songs. These have been super helpful,
Really interesting video, some awesome techniques to try out, Thanks so much guys.
Our pleasure! Glad you learned a thing or two! Thanks for watching!
The sound design of Au5 is really amazing! ❤️
1000% I am blown away every time I see him work in the DAW. Thanks for watching Gost! Let us know if you need anything.
This whole channel is a gem hahaha, Great stuff!
Glad you enjoy it! Really appreciate the compliment :) Let us know if there's any way we can improve in the future!
Au5 you are simply amazing!!!!
You could say he's Au5ome. Ha ha. Thanks for watching!
these videos are dope! i think it would be awesome to have a video where au5 just talks about his approach to harmony and how it informs the decisions he makes when writing chord progressions
That's a very interesting idea! Take a step away from technical knowledge for an episode and visit something like chord voicing, harmonies and melodies. I will definitely consider that! Thanks for your suggestion Mr T and thanks for watching!
just started watching this guy.. he is so god damn smart and fluent with the daw I'm high key jealous
Austin's level of knowledge is absolutely mind blowing. So lucky to have him on In The Daw and to have created the School of Bass with him! Hope you learned something from this episode :)
thanks In the DAW, and thanks AU5, this is so encouraging
Thank you for watching! We hope you learned a lot in this episode
great channel guys, really helpful, Au5 is a genius
Much appreciated! He is a melodic master. Glad you learned something from this episode and thank you so much for tuning in!
Sooooo much knowledge!
Austin speaks a whole different language when it comes to music. Next level stuff.
AU5 you are amazing ❤️
Isn't he? Thanks for tuning in! Hope you learned something valuable in this one Jason.
thanks for the knowledge guys, such great work as always...would love to see Chime on in the DAW if you can swing it ;)
Great stuff!
Glad you enjoyed it! If there's anything we can do to improve future episodes, please let us know! Thanks so much for watching.
Dude's production is insane!!! He's a beast!
That's why we made the School of Bass my friend. Can't pass up on someone like Austin's knowledge!! Thanks so much for watching.
Always a pleasure! And yes, i have taken the School of Bass Master class! I instantly up'd my game. 💯
good looks on asking questions about soothe been trying to learn more about using this and the best way to set my vocal chains in general (;
Hey Carly! We could all use a bit more knowledge on Soothe... what a beast of a plugin. Hope this episode had some information you can take advantage of!
This song SLAPS
Au5 knows how to get the people going!! Thanks so much for watching Will
Wyatt I love you!!!
(I love you too)
Can't wait for this one! 💪💪
Didn't expect to see you here!
@@synthesismusic2774 I am always hungry for new sound design knowledge! :)
this is so damn inspiring...now i'm gonna make some fire today...!!!
Let's go!!! Go make some beautiful music my friend. Thanks for watching and let us know if you need anything!
As if you can modulate operators pitch smoothly like that. That is insane
The man is an absolute Ableton stock instrument wizard. Thank you for watching and let us know if you need anything!
Thank You))
Thank you too! Glad you stopped by and we hope you learned a thing or two from this episode!
Incidentally, it sounds like the song Thrilla - Dark Passenger also uses something similar to makO's woody bass!
WE NEED SEVEN LIONS HERE AS WELL !!! Would Love To See Him Break Down His Latest Song With Haliene ( What's Done is Done )
Don't capitalize every starting letter dude, your comments aren't titles or acronyms. That's 12 year old stuff man
We appreciate the suggestion! We will see what we can do, but of course, it is Seven Lions. - a very busy guy! Thank you for watching!
AU5 always loses me when he talks about music theory. Its crazy he knows both sound design and theory so well.
I often have to re-watch/re-listen. He gives so much knowledge in such a concise way. The guy is a musical wizard. Thanks for watching Kazmir!
I don't know how his CPU handles his project so good!
We can all dream of having a CPU like that one day my friend. Thanks for tuning in, hope you learned something!
Anybody know where to find this Ableton skin?
Finally people are not sleeping on Zynaptiq anymore
Wormhole is insane and adaptiverb is a powerhouse
They have some unbelievably underrated plugins. People will find out soon enough! Hope you learned something valuable from this episode. Reach out if you need anything :)
I'm ready to see how much of a newb I am.
Don't worry, that's just a side effect of being in proximity to Au5 :) Totally normal
@@DAWNation couldn’t agree more lol
King au5
He is definitely a GOAT of the genre. Been killing the bass scene for years.
29:05 gothic was the term, lol
This is great content! However, did you cut out pauses in conversation? If feels a bit jumpy
We like to clean up the videos to take out any unnecessary stuff/side conversations. We want to make this as straight forward and helpful as possible. Otherwise, the episodes would have a veeeeeery long run time. Hope that makes sense! Thanks for watching
this school of bass courses payment is for per month or permanent😁,imreally interested about this course
Would really love to have ATliens , TYNAN , G-Rex , Peekaboo 🧸🧸
Noted, noted, noted and noted. Thanks for your suggestions, we'll see what we can do! Thanks for watching!
How to you spell the artists name who he snagged a clip for the kick from?? 👀 If Au5 says he’s good I’m dying to hear his stuff. I’m always searching for new people to get inspired from and Au5 you are a huge inspo!! Thank you for taking such time to teach us your knowledge. I have learned so much. Thank you!
Thanks for watching! Julie, do you have a timestamp this is mentioned? I was searching through the video and can't find where it gets brought up. Hope you enjoyed it!
I know he was mentioning Fractal regarding one of the percussion loops
@@DAWNation I believe that the artist he mentioned was just around 34:20 !
Famous Spear.
If I use an additive synth like Synclavier V from Arturia, can I get the same clean basses like Harmor?
Yes, absolutely. Harmor really has insane potential, it's all about how you use. Personally, I prefer Serum for bass design. Thanks so much for watching!
the more i hear au5 talk the more one i become with my daw.
That's what I'm saying. Just listen to Austin as much as possible and you'll level up so fast hahah
@@DAWNation whens the next time youll have him on? IM WAITING lol
au5 is the sauce
Au5 INVENTED the sauce my man. Thanks for watching! As always, let us know if there's any way we can improve our content for the future! Much love.
The thing about copy pasting the first drop ... I guess you don't want people to call you lazy for doing it that's why you make a different drop even though you don't want to (not sure what the right decision is though, depends on the song I guess)
I think for some songs it works, but not for others. It's really up to what you want to do, but don't be afraid of other people judging your musical decisions! Thanks for watching!
55:23 - 40:55 cool bass
Thanks for coming through
@@DAWNation hahaha this was just for myself
Sounds great :) good seeing you here
So let me get this straight, I should get Morph by Zynaptiq
It's in my top 3 plugins. Couldn't recommend it enough. Even being on the pricey side... TOTALLY WORTH IT!! -Brad
42:23 for anyone like me
1:08:00
i need serum
Anyone know how he got the mutes and other buttons blue in ableton?
I'm pretty sure it's just the skin he's using! In Ableton, go to preferences --> look feel --> theme and there's a few options to pick from. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!
48:00 can i use 24 bit audio and still bring the volume down on clipping tracks or is that only a 32 bit thing?
You can do it in 24-bit as well, but to a lesser extent (gain value) than 32-bit audio
Unfortunately 24 bit audio is not floating point, this means it has the same unity (0db) level as 16 bit but with higher resolution. 32 bit float however does not clip at 0db. It is scaled in a way where 0db still sounds like 0db and has the resolution of 24 bit but there is extended range far above 0db.
@@au5music Learnt something new today, thanks for the clarification man
Au5 thanks for the clarification, will be bouncing my stems in 32 from now on. Hopefully I don't need another Harddrive though cus my 8 slot usb hub is full lol
Y'all just blew my mind with this. @Au5 you're the real MVP mate 🙌🏽
Ight. So I have a drop that requires a similar kind of bass that this drop has… I have learned why it almost killed you. It’s less about the sound design and more about the getting it full, distorted, clear, wide and loud at the same time. I’m on try 3 so far. Also, I’m not just doing the same thing cuz, the drop requires a similar sound but, more organic. So, instead of a blaster, I need something more animalistic….yet, the actual growl layer can’t really be super fuzzy cuz that just messes up the vast array of noises nd shit going on in the top end. Oh yeah. And it also has to be transient. And progressive. Cuz I’ve tried looping a one shot I made and it sounds repetitive. And I’ve tried just making a conventional neuro sorta choppy drop. And, I dunno if it’s in my head but, it neeeds to be absolutely face meltingly hard. Cuz the song is progressive and starts off with like an ambient (cute) sorta colour bass drop. Than like a more conventional colour bass drop. Than goes into like a seven lions x au5 drop. Thaaan the first half of the drop I’m now on is like the chord stack keytar solo drop. But, the first half ends with a riser. And than there’s like a vaccine bass which sounds like everything is getting sucked into a blackhole. Than just…it needs to sound like the Big Bang. Just, all the energy of the entire song sucked into a singularity and fucking blasted out into the listeners face holes…..so now I watching this to try nd get some of the principals back cuz I forgot how sound works.

Au5 just compared music to his native language.
Au5 speaks fluent dubstep. Thanks for watching Didzis!
Ive always pronounced Au5 like Oww5 lol
Owwwwwwww 5 love it. Thanks for watching! Let us know if you have any feedback so we can improve future episodes :)
Au5 micro doses mushroom forsure. How could he achieve such a flow state.
