    As a big fan of the nanny one thing I always appreciated were that they acknowledged that Fran’s toxic relationship with food and that she goes to weight watchers and takes dexatrim (a dietary supplement) it makes the show much more realistic and doesn’t give the Gilmore girl explanation of how they eat a copious amount of food and never gain weight.

      True she may have been as thin as my pinky but it wasn’t like she ate like her mom and just didn’t gain weight. She was CONSTANTLY thinking about eating too much when food was brought up and I think her size is gonna be less idealized when it’s portrayed as having this baggage of constant stress over it

    maybe that's just me and no one else but my takeaway of having watched this show for years as a kid (never thought I'd hear someone describe The Nanny as edgy lmao) was that things like age and weight seemed to have no actual impact on how desirable a person was despite them obsessing over it constantly. Yes Silvia ate a lot, and was said to be heavy set, but that didn't change the fact that she'd successfully use sex appeal to for example get groceries cheaper. Everyone who knew Fran was fully aware that she was over thirty but that didn't change the fact that she was attractive. I loved the lengths Fran went to find loopholes in the weight watchers system because at the end, food is just so good. She talked abut dieting a lot, but she also had clear rules about how to get the most out of a buffet. I always felt that the joke was that everyone was way too stressed about fulfilling cultural beauty standards that had no actual bearing on wether other people would find them attractive or not. Some of the jokes were really quite brutal but by the end of the day I felt the message of The Nanny was that no matter how much shame we put on it, all these percieved vices that a person might have like loving food or sex or watching trashy daytime soap operas are just part of being alive and having a body

    I feel like one of the reason the show is accurate is that Fran comes from Jewish family in New York during the 90s so her wanting go get married and her mother pushing so hard is based on something that was very common.

  • @merrivideo
    @merrivideo Год назад +57

    I'm not Jewish nor American. I saw Sylvia as a women who passed her issues with her body to her daughter. I have gone through that as a daughter. When Fran went to therapy, she learns a lot about herself and makes decisions to take care of herself. So, I see the origin of Fran's issues with her body and later how she becomes her own self. I felt identified with Fran. Now that I think about the jokes about the mom being the future of the daughter, I also identify with Fran because even though I like to believe I'm 100% okay with how I look, I have wondered if I would eventually look as my mom and I have even identified the factors that led into her mature figure, as not to do the same. Conclusion: I also want my boss to pay for my therapy 😅

    They also made a lot of comments about how "old" Cc was despite the fact that her and Fran are probably like the same age or at most just a couple of years apart. I agree that Mr. Sheffield is really problematic in a lot of ways, particularly never just having a straightforward conversation with Cc explaining that he doesn't feel the same way. They joke about how he's British and repressed but at least him and Fran eventually get to be frank with each other.

Kind of Meredith Blake vibes (before Meredith Blake lol, maybe cece was the blueprint?) I love the Nanny despite all the criticisms we have about the humor today. I agree it is sad they portrayed C.C. as unattractive and undesirable when she was just the opposite (besides her rude personality and her unable to remember the kids names). Lauren Lane is beautiful and did not deserve to have been hurt by those jokes. Thank you for touching on Fran's reasons for being so thin. I had read that factoid myself when I rewatched The Nanny a year ago and it broke my heart. Its a horrible crime and I hope she got justice. I am also thankful you discussed how despite her thin "healthy" appearance it was not becuz she suffered from PTSD and most likely felt the need to keep a thin figure from the comments made on set.

    • @michellecollinsgalaviz2126
      @michellecollinsgalaviz2126 Год назад +13

      But that’s just the genius of it. As beautiful as Lauren Lane is, C.C. was unattractive because of her character and demeanor, not because she was ugly, but because she was mean and insensitive.
      After a rewatch, it caught my attention that she always wore a limited, stern and stoic palette of beige, white and black. This was also because she was the foil for warm and edgy Fran. The only two exceptions were when she starts fancying Niles she wore a monochromatic red ensemble to symbolize her passion, and then right after their first night together all her softened edges were symbolized by a pastel, flowy dress, like she was walking on clouds. Regardless of what she wore, she was always conventionally beautiful, just not attractive because of how unempathetic and uncaring she was regarding other people.

    You are the first person that I see who mentions how it's the 90s and some things were different. The jokes and what was said on tv was really different. Even in shows that came out in early 2000s you will see jokes that wouldn't pass today. I mostly wish we saw more of the kids cause whenever they appeared, their lines were actually funny.

  • @Aurriel
    @Aurriel Год назад +36

    Rewatching the Nanny as an adult made me realize how strange the body image was for women in the 90s. CC being in a normal healthy weight range and being bullied for being "too fat" just hit way too close to home. If I remember correctly there was even a story line that focussed on the weight of one for the girls - at a time when she was clearly not overweight. And the comfort food thing is on the one hand really real, but on the other it is sad, that other ways of coping mechanisms were not shown (at least not for the women in the show).

    I think it is so important to also talk about how Mr.S was not supposed to conventionally be in love with Fran. She isn't supposed to be traditionally desirable. In my opinion, CC is the foil to Fran: A WASP old money lady. You can even see this in how they dress, it's so neat! CC is what he would assume he ended up with. (not CC specifically, rather her archetype) Not someone like Fran: Poorer/different social class, loud, outgoing, and of course, Jewish. That being said, yeah idk how they drew out Max and Fran for five seasons lol

    • @nm9688

    I loved how on the nanny the actors actually ate the food. On shows like Gilmore Girls and Friends they talk about eating the food but then end the scene not touching anything on the plates. There’s a hilarious blooper on the nanny where Fran Drescher messed up a line and then jokes about how she ate another piece of cake which shows she actually was eating the food!
    I love the nanny though so I don’t mind the food jokes. Mostly with her mother Sylvia. But they make it just so well written. Like when they order take out during a bank robbery it’s just so perfect for comedy 😂

    Thank you for your analyses.
    I feel sorry for the actress of C.C. I never thought what that role meant for her. Especially having a whole audience laughing with a mean joke directed to you.
    While I never considered her ugly or fat, I still internalised her Charakter of the not just mean, but unattractive one. It surely comes with the job description, but having to deal with PP depression is a whole other cup of tea.
    Also so sorry for what Fran Drescher had to survive. It’s remarkable that she could continue with a successful and funny show.
    And finally, I was annoyed by a few things too, but I blame my binge watching for it. The eating jokes and marriage jokes are a little dense If watched in a short time.
    Funnily, while I rooted for them to get together, when they were married I was happy for them but annoyed how sweet they where with each other. Cause the chase was obviously over and that was pretty much the essence of the show.

    Very interesting analysis of the show! I can't believe the Nanny is turning 30! I watched it as a teen and it was so successful in my country. Fran Drescher even came to Argentina to a talk show. You forgot to mention the dumb blonde jokes! Most blonde women were portrayed as dumb, like Fran's Friend Val or Heather Biblo. The latter was slut shamed a lot! But that has nothing to do with food. Is this a food related channel? I don't know you. First video I have watched so I didn't understand why you are analysing food in 90's shows. I need context. Unrelated question: are you Spanish? We are inadvertently socialized by what we consume as entertainment consciously, and subconsciously. Media now has become so diversified and inclusive that it can cater to a specific niche group however back then when mostly everyone watched the same program at the same time it’s sensible to understand how the way the world is depicted through media conflates with our perspectives of reality now, as children from the people of those times. Sociology neurons on 🔥

    I love the nanny!! It was hilarious!
    yes they took it too far as for Fran and Maxwell getting together but it was good.
    A bit too much body shaming and some seriously wrong things;f.ex the kissing contest Maggie enters with Billy Ray Cyrus.. 😱 that would not happen today.
    I think it’s important to remember that it was comedy..
    it was satirical..
    They used a lot of sarcasm and irony ( typical for British ) and all the Jewish humor was Fran Drescher kicking a** 😆
    she really displayed the Jewish mindset= you’re not a full person unless you’re married and have kids.
    not just the American Jewish but all Jewish people.
    As to Sylvia’s weight loss it was Renee Taylor who wanted to loose weight. It wasn’t Sylvia that was told by her doctor to loose the weight she gained from excessive eating on the show - it was Renee.
    We live in a time where everything that is sarcastic or ironic is frowned upon and very often taken too seriously. Especially by the younger, woke generation. There’s a serious lack of humor.
    Can you imagine someone dissecting the I love Lucy show..?
    I was saddened though to hear Madeline Zima ( Gracie ) telling about her experience on the show.
    And also: Fran Drescher was very thin at the end of the show, not because of what happened to her but because she was sick! For three years she consulted several doctors to find out what was wrong and finally she found out that she had cancer.
    ( check out her book or Organization “Cancer Schmancer” )

The plot, the dialogues, the strange presentation of Jews (as a Jew, I didn't relate to it), the degrading treatment of women and more... it's just not pleasant to watch. The jokes and the fashion make it "go down the throat" but we are no longer in a world where there is a small number of channels on TV without much choice between them...

    While I agree that media can warp our reality the question here is what was first the chicken or the egg. It baffles me that a younger generation never comes to the conclusion that all those topics only made it into the show because all those things were an issue of the time and fail to see how those issues are presented...as a parody. These characters were caricatures and everybody perceived them as this. Nobody watched that show and tried to model their life after their role model. Shows like this were more so a mirror that showed you how ridiculous societies expectations were by stylizing those things and turning them into jokes. Yes there was a pressure to marry but as the show portrays the world wont come crashing down if you're not married by 30. Even more so because it shows you to not lower your standarts because you'll end up with Danny. Shefield had to be rich and boring and always only second best to see that he's not all that and that his praising isn't actually deserved. Yes they make fat jokes about CC and it works because everyone can see she isn't obese in the slightest and that shows you the insanity of it all. Portraying food hyperbolic as the ultimate comfort yet also as the most shameful thing on earth shows you how nonsensical all of it is. This show just played with tropes and making a mockery out of them on purpose to actually critizise them. It's satire!
    If I had to critizise anything it would be more so that they wrapped up a classic happy ending with a bow. It would have been way better if both never ended up together. But that the wish for them to marry is still so strong in a younger generation of viewers (that is some kind of torture to wait five seasons till they end up together)shows you the real issues of today. We still seek selffullfillment and validation in marriage. We center in how a 30 years old show handles food which just shows how obsessiv people are with it to this day. We still connotate somebody who checks into a mental health facility for a mental breakdown as negativ or punishment of the character instead of somebody seeking help for their problems.So on and forth...
    Of course that is just my perception as someone who lived through the 90's and that is definetly debatable. There is only one thing I'd like to point out that is not. It is just not true that discussion about mental health weren't existent in the 90's. Eating disorders, depression, suicide and drug addiction were omnipresent. Of course the discussions were not what they are to day but that just comes with more reasearch and understanding of the field and destigmatisation.

      I see you're point, however I would like to address that even if it was made to be satire not everyone, especially younger viewers, would perceive it as such. Media portrays a certain image as beautiful/handsome for a standard. Anyone who deviates from that standard is not attractive even tho that is completely false. Even tho C.C was clearly not obese she still was very tall, had short hair, and her clothes were made to look like she had broad shoulders, plus she was cutthroat at times. All traits that are not feminine enough or pretty enough (which is funny since models have to be tall). She was and still is a beautiful person. Additionally, the video was not addressing her putting herself into a mental hospital as a problem. It's becuz of the reason. She lost it becuz the man she was pining over for over a decade didnt love her back. That is further perpetrating the desire we are told that we should have about getting married. If the reasons to admit herself was due to depression or anxiety or something unrelated to Max then it wouldve been perceived differently. Again, i see where you are coming from but not everyone can decipher satire from truth. And even if these were really just made to make fun of the standards during the 90s some people actually struggled and struggle with these feelings even if they aren't obese and/or are told they should be married by 30 or else they wont be happy. And yes, mental health issues were discussed in the 90s but not to the same level as today which I think is that she was trying to get at.

      @@katlynbrown3548 I honestly don't know what to tell you if a younger generation can't decipher this kind of satire anymore...either the world is doomed or you giving them way less credit than they deserve. Keeping children in a bubble from reality can't be the answer. Which should be obvious, since a lot of things changed from 30 years ago yet the issues are still the same. Actually omnipresent through social media. The answer should be to raise critical thinkers and give them context and guidance to navigate the world around them. A 'clean' world will never exist so rather than keeping all the bad things from them give them the tools to decipher them. I find a world where satire has no place anymore scary. There is a reason why expressions like that existed in the first place and we're still facing those issues.

    Everyone has their own opinion, but I have to point out that you are giving yours out of ignorance of jewish people/jokes; the times it was set it; also based on Fran real life, her mom and dad have those same names and the fictional characters are based on them. Grandma Yetta is also real. This is not a mean comment, I am just trying to shed light on some of this. And you seemed to have have missed one of the most important things on thigns show, IT DID NOT MAKE JOKES NOR DISCRIMINATE ANYONE. You know why? Because Fran got married to a guy who turned out to be gay. They are still best friends and he is the director of The Nanny., or writer or producer or something, the thing is, this si show timelessness relies on its tolerance to differences and that jokes don`t have to be necesarily mean.

    Someone should to a video about her mental health and how her relationship with maxwell was for the most part soo toxic, (for both of them), that it made her ill

    • @Spiritinthemate
      @Spiritinthemate 2 месяца назад

      I'm specifically talking about the fact that she was super hot for him without him wanting that at first. She pushed him Into the relationship, by continuessly flirting with him and seducing him, even manipulating him every now and then. C.C didn't got together with him because she was holding back. Max on the other hand, DIDN'T fire her out of pity, which he should have if he didn't wanted to be with her. He started getting jealous because he gets used to her affection, starting to become toxic himself because he is completely confused about what he wants. And all that ended up in a mess that ultimately brought her straight to a therapist. (she actually got raunchyer and crazier as the show goes on). Not to mention C.C being also in love with Maxwell, but respecting him, then watching his relationship with Fran and being bullied by Nils wich made her down right schizophrenic (actually canon for some episodes) (she should have left that situation too, she always told him what was going on but he ignored her into oblivion in more than one way). Frans and Max relationship went on for 4 years and got worse and worse :(
      But I'm still happy they solved all of that and got a happy ending

    10:21 LOL it was not just Hollywood, this was part of life as well... art and life are intertwined in both directions. Lying about age in multiple ways.
    Classically in heteronormative patriarchy structures there was this women fearing getting older, but also lying to be "older" teens vs adults - think fake I.D.'s and dating and age gaps (& laws).
    But fearing aging now also became a thing for men especially noticeable with meterosexuals [a heterosexual urban man who enjoys shopping, fashion, and similar interests traditionally associated with women or gay men].

    C.C. Babcock was a role, not a real person, a tv show character that suited the times very well. And was written as the person you loved to "hate". The viewers loved the show, why it ran so long. Also Niles and C.C. develop into a love story and even an engagement in the ending of the series. I understand it is hard for younger generations to understand zeitgeist, culture and history - especially in this day and age where intelligence is also dropping because of the tech developments. Things are not the same, things before that were also different, it is an evolution of culture...
    Only half way into this video but I am tagging out, lets talk when you are the older generation and the alpha's correct all the things theoretically what were still messed up in this time. They'll have a field day with Trump era and the "culture wars".

    I think in parts this show aged decently well compared to some of it’s contemporaries (coughfriends was already outdated when it airedcough) but the fatphobia and ageism, paired with is being mostly targeted at the women in the show poisons the well for suuure. Especially, since it is permeating basically every part of the show and in every episode…

Not to imply that these programs are healthy or reasonable ways to manage your weight but I think thats how they explained it in the show

    I can make a whole case study regarding C.C Babcock because she’s one of my fave “evil” women but all in all I agree with the modern take that some people have which is: C.C should’ve been a lesbian, her style, her drive and ambition and overall how powerful she was due to her wealth make her a modern lipstick lesbian. Her obsession with Maxwell might as well be comp het.
