There were so many jokes about not eating or being fat. Lynette was especially bad for implying she was overweight when these women could not have been much skinnier. Yet there was Bree always baking … she also never gained any weight or bloated at all despite being an alcoholic. The idea that Gabby was fat just because she wasn’t wearing skin tight dresses for a short period of time is insane. Love this show but the body stuff is bad news
Are people that sensitive? Lmao I watched the show when I was very young and I re watched it now and never thought anything about what you are talking about
Yep, it definitely feels weird to say middle aged for anyone aged 35 but in studies and articles the term was used for women 35 and up, I’m not sure if there’s an alternative term?
I remembered one scene: Lynette was getting an ultrasound because she was pregnant with twins (again!) and you could see a flat, toned belly! The production didn't even try to make it look realistic haha... I had never noticed their weight, but how toned and polished everyone was, even if it didn't make sense for their character. I mean, Gabrielle was supposed to be a retired model and you could see her doing yoga, shopping, having a maid etc, but what about Brie? How could a housewife with two kids find time to look perfect and cook and clean that huge house and do the gardening? Even Susan, who was "bad" at housekeeping and was the most poor of them had always a clean house, perfect hair (Eddie disagrees haha) fresh clothes everyday, toned body etc. I tell you, i have a baby and i hardly find the time to take a bath! Having my hair done or doing some exercise is a luxury!
Very good point - it definitely goes toward the idea that women need to be perfect doing everything and still look flawless, which is not realistic in the slightest if you have to do it all yourself
(Warning ⚠️ Biased Fan): I mean, Brie was stay at home and cleaning, gardening, etc.... can be a workout in of itself. Plus, it's all about time management. Kids are off to school and hubby is at work for 8 hours in which you can break down segments of that time prepping, cleaning, etc... As for Susan, I'm like 90% convinced Julie did a LOT of housework as she was treated as a parentified child and often used as Susan's personal therapist 🙄 but, Susan is also seen jogging throughout the show which couple that with barely eating, is plausible. At the end of a day, it's a soap/telenovela with a bigger production budget. Sometimes what makes it a comfort show is the fact that it's NOT 100% realistic and can use the suspension of disbelief to navigate through different topics. I'd highly recommend checking out the subreddit for Desperate Housewives though! It's super active and the discussions there are great. Only watched the show with my mom growing up so it's really fun to discuss it with other people and get different viewpoints!
I don't want flabby bellues and messy hair. I know how real moms look. Everybody does. Noone would watch a show with real looking moms. Baby belly: how to make an actress have a baby belly? An actress that WORKS hard to be in shape? Of course you as a mom have no time. Everybody knows how time consumning mothering is. You agreed to that, you knew what you were up to.
desperate housewives is my ultimate comfort show. i originally watched it when i was way too young (like 8) with my mom and big sister; my mom has since passed away, my sister moved to a different country but i still rewatch it almost annually, most recently with my boyfriend and it was very comforting to relive it with someone i loved ❤️
i caught glimpses of it growing up, so i bought the dvd sets a few years ago when i was in high school. my mom said that my dad was pretty invested in the show too, so i’m trying to get my boyfriend to watch it with me 😂
Throughout the whole show Susan looked so unwell, particularly in the later seasons where she looked like she was about to keel over at any moment. I’m not surprised to hear she was so busy she didn’t eat. A similar thing happened to me when I was at my lowest weight. But I remember thinking it was normal to have your bones be visible through your chest because every woman on TV had them! The 2000s were wild
It is normal to have bones visible on your chest, btw; it depends how you carry your weight and mine are visible to the top end of a healthy bmi because I carry weight mostly in my hips and thighs.
I know they’re not part of a fictional show but I would love to see an episode on the Kardashian’s! They’ve set so many “beauty standards” and it would be interesting to see an analysis on them especially as they’ve caused so many controversies over the years with plastic surgery, dietary depressants etc.
@@JessicaVianaa I think there are plenty of videos about them however giving that they have recently looked a lot thinner and how that may influence consumers in the very near future.
That’s an interesting phenomenon. Despite all of the plastic surgeries, they’ve created new beauty standards helping to safe women from struggling with losing too much weight. It helped me personally to defeat anorexia. God bless their wide hips ❤
My boobs have gotten noticeably bigger over the years despite weight being the same, hormonal changes affect how your body stores fat quite dramatically in some cases. So she might be right about the boobs being natural.
A relative of mine was the “oh my god how does she look like that after kids” mom. Four kids over I think roughly 8 years and still to this day (about 18 years since the last kid was born) she is a size 0. Everyone assumed she ate nothing at all, or worked out like crazy, or had some other crazy way of making herself that way and they were all jealous because NOBODY actually looks like that. Turns out it was some kind of medical condition. Don’t know the details but it super wasn’t great lmao
I feel like I'm either treated different for being overweight or fawned over for being thin and horribly ill. I've experienced both sides throughout my life and it certainly makes one think.
It was disturbing for me - especially because I was a teen when DH started - that people thought Eva was fat and her friends were acting like she was fat and I was like ... so she's gone from 00 to 0? Like, the weight she gained looked like she was the same size of some of the other castmates (that is to say, she barely changed in size at all, and was still incredibly skinny, while being called fat). Damn, the 90s and 00s did so much damage to my poor brain.
Speaking about Melrose Place, you should do a Beverly Hills 90210/Melrose Place/Models Inc video. Specially on BH90210 the girls were so young and exposed to so much hate. Also Charmed would be a good subject (one of my favorite shows and they wore so many tight clothes)
I remember i was a kid when DHW was on tv. Mind that i'm from méxico so it wasn't aired until a year and a half later in mexican television and i remember the impact that Eva Longoria had on the latin community since she is a Latina woman. So i realized she is part of the stereotype of what most people think latin woman are and expect them to be. I do remember woman around me and in the mexican/latin media critizing her for being too petite, too skinny, hipless etc but also promoting diets and exercise programs to be just like her.
I’ve seen my mother watch this show growing up and we recently watched it together. I loved it, so juicy. We’re both naturally “slim” women and yet we were constantly shocked by how slim the entire cast was. I can’t imagine what it must be like to watch this show if you don’t fit in that category and not feel some type of way…
Thank you for sharing BMI rather than numeric weight. I think it’s a healthier way to get a grasp of someone’s body size because it factors in height. Thinking about how these woman were around a BMI of 19 really hammers in the bare minimum amount of muscle and body fat they had. The beauty standard really is a woman unable to defend herself. My lean body weight (fat free) is several pounds heavier than what my weight would be at a BMI of 19…
Just a very quick reminder that BMI was invented based on white middle-aged men and it often is utterly useless when it is applied to the bodies of... anybody else.
Thanks for watching 💕 I know BMI gets a bad rep but for these videos I feel like it’s a better way to give everyone a standard idea of body mass that is more comparable
The BMI estimates are incorrect; most of them are clearly underweight, while a BMI of 19 is in the healthy range and would look slim but not as frighteningly thin as many of the Housewives, who are certainly under a BMI of 18.5.
I remember the red dessous combo Marcia wore in one of the episodes to seduce her husband and the the following week, the dessous was rumoured to be sold out everywhere. Everyone wanted to look like them, even teens like me. They were portrayed as desirable while their storylines were mostly about them being desperate and morally awful human beings (some of them but especially Bree). It is a weird and screwed up combination
Agree with you 100% - you reminded me of an article I found during research titled “A definitive list of all the terrible things that happened on Desperate Housewives”. I’d recommend you to have a read, I almost didn’t remember how wild the plot of the show is 😅
This series is so interesting. Other suggestions would be SNL I heard the ladies in the original cast were under a lot of pressure to be thin and of course ally Mc Beal is one you always hear about.
Hey! Jessica I really enjoyed watching your desperate housewives vlog so so much you inspired me so so much and I wish you reach 40K Subscribers very very soon!😭♥️✨
This was a great analysis! I would love to see more videos like this one ❤ DH is one of my favorite shows of all time. Rewatching it this year made me notice how insanely skinny all of them were. In some ways, times are changing for the better.
When we look at people who may be overweight, a metric that is more accurate for determining wether they are healthy is their belly circumference. And it turns out that when these numbers were compared BMI actually under reports instead of over reports for people who are at risk of health complications. It's a common misconception that BMI supposedly unfairly labels people in a risk group, it's actually the other way around.
Yes and no. BMI can underreport but just as easily overreport someone in the overweight category as soon as the bone structure is wide and or they have a lot of muscle mass. But if you have someone with a slim bone structure who doesn't work out and mostly stores their fat around the mid section they can easily be considered fine or slightly overweight, even though the fat around and mostly inside the body and around the organs is whats causing more health risks. Its not just the belly circumference but the waist to hip ratio. So you measure the hips and the waist and thst gives you a more accurate view of health risks if theres no difference or thewaist is bigger than the hips. In general there are so so many factors thatneed to be considered in determening whether or not someone is truly unhealthily overweight
Yep, BMI is too generous-it lets skinny fat people go. A healthy BMI range is 40 pounds, which is more than enough to cover a variety of frames and lifestyles. Strongmen, sumo wrestlers, and other athletes who are too heavy by BMI standards STILL drop weight when they retire because the extra mass, whether it’s muscle or fat, puts too much of a strain on your heart, joints, and ligaments. You can complain about BMI being unrealistic but, like OP points out, it’s unrealistic because it’s too generous, big too strict. Body fat % isn’t perfect but it’s a better measure, and people who complain about BMI are NOT going to be happy if they switch over because it’s much more stringent.
the part of her getting compliments cause she lost weight not feeling well.... mom is going through this now where half is obsessed with her be skinny at 58 and others skinny shaming (we're black). mom and i wouldn't be bothered by the weight if it wasnt so quick and because her medicine kills her appetite. so we're in the process of asking the doctor to try something else and try to get her just to gain 10 lbs and eat 2 meals a day. She's very fat skinny/ skinny fat as when you touch her there's not much resistance so at her age trying to up her protein and do simple resistance training.
Thank you for watching 🙏I hope your mom is able to find an alternative that supports her better, I went through it for a year with medication that increased my appetite and I understand it can feel uncontrollable sometimes... wishing you both the best x
I'm 6 episodes far from the final episode of Desperate Hosewives kkkkk. I just love watch problematic series and then come to yt searching for people commenting about them. I already watched your video commenting Sex and the City and I don't know if u did something about Gossip Girl or The O.C., but if u didn't, pleaseeeee do!!!!
Interesting video but seriously, people knew about hair and make up before 2012. There were make up tutorials as soon as YT started not to mention a whole world that existed even before the internet ;)
I'm 37. My BMI is around 20. I wouldn't say it is hard to maintain this weight. Sometimes I gain few kilos because I still consume alcohol. As for the dieting... I never really diet. Just try to eat healthy (a lot of protein, no fast food, no food with crazy amount of calories). What I don't do is starve myself. It never works and you don't have to starve if you want to be on thinner side
Goes so muc further back. Look at Twiggy, the model. If you haven’t heard of her she is the original “waif” model and brought focus to being ultra skinny.
Thanks for the feedback, in these videos normally I attempt to recreate the diets in order to explore the efforts involved in looking like the actresses. However, in this one I could only find information for Eva - perhaps I should’ve just removed that part from here to avoid confusion so I’ll keep it in mind for future videos.
You should discuss the relationship that Fran Fine in The Nany had with food as it was quite a weird thing. I used to watch it as a kid and think that once I'll grow up I am going to be fit and skinny no matter what I eat just like her.
Unpopular opinion; I hate this show. I hated watching it, I hated the body image ideals, I hated the way the drama was presented, and so much more; I’d be here all day talking about why I don’t like it. I find this discussion fascinating though, as someone who’s seen the whole show. I love your commentary.
Thanks for the suggestion, interestingly I don’t know much about K-pop but have watched some videos on that - I’ll see if I can come up with a fresh take :)
I recently watched first episode of the show out of sentiment. What struck me, all these actreses were so thin. I did not notice first time watching it becouse I was in my 20s and depressed so I was very thin myself. Now in my 30s not depressed and not skinny i was really struck by this
I love to be skinny. Nothing wrong with that. I eat a well planned diet and exercise zo achive a certain look. Why do you act like being skinny is linked to mental diseases?
this whole video is so weird... obsessing over this one show and its impact on ed's in women, but then obsessively recreating their diets, including their weight, doing their workouts...? what was the reasoning behind that? you are just reproducing all that shit. i feel like you want to recreate channels that discuss cultural phenomena, but it falls completely flat.
Hello thanks for watching and for the feedback. I do not include numeric weight information on my videos and, to reinforce, I’d hope the message I expressed in the video was clear that this is not to promote such diets and instead to demonstrate evidence that such diets can be unhealthy and are not realistic or sustainable for the majority of women. In this video I only found specific information on Eva’s diet so the rest of the video does not show this instead focusing on analyzing specific topics around dieting and EDs in the actresses’ experiences themselves.
Most people with eating disorders have food addiction and binge eating disorder. These women look normal. Eating healthy and working out gives you a lean body. Sadly that body type is seen by many as "evil" but on the other hand they glorify obesity. What's wrong with the ideal of a lean worked out body? It's NOT unrealistic, otherwise we wouldn't see it on real women. Sometimes I think videos like yours are just pandering to the "growing" obesity community. Yes, anorexia exists but the root is in the childhood, not a TV show. A TV show can trigger it but we have to look at what REALLY causes an individuals eating disorder. Like sexual violence in childhood which is easier to ignore when you can blame four lean women on a screen.
Note: I have decided to remove a portion of the video where I tried Eva's day of eating - it wasn't crucial to the overall point of the video and so I cut it out to remove any confusion, since there was no information for the other actresses. It also save a few minutes of watching time, love ya

Well researched and fun to watch thank you!! I love desperate housewives!!
Thank you so much for watching 💕💕
I just finished the show with my parents…. So good!
Interesting video but seriously, people knew about hair and make up before 2012. There were make up tutorials as soon as YT started not to mention a whole world that existed even before the internet ;)
This work is a symphony of innovative thoughts; akin to a book that was a symphony of innovation. "Your Body Your Temple" by Sophia Wintergreen
Great job i really enjoyed that.
Thank you for watching 🙏💕💕
so funny that all arch students do the same. I binge watched Friends and some of my studio-mates binge watched the office.
I don't understand why there's more desperate housewives content.
Please do character analysis & their lives
its a cheesy show
Love your videos, always an intelligent and interesting take! Haven't even seen Desperate Housewives and I'm still interested!
Thank you for watching 💕🙏
Hey Jessica! I cant seem to be able to find your sex and the city video. does anyone know if it has been removed?
Olá de Portugalll
Awwww olá 🥰❤️
Your channel is amazing! Thank you so much for all the research you do!
Thank you so much for the support 💕💕
Can you do a video about Kate Middleton??
❤❤❤
What is her book?
Goes so muc further back. Look at Twiggy, the model. If you haven’t heard of her she is the original “waif” model and brought focus to being ultra skinny.
great video but I did think it was a little pointless and out of place when you tried Eva's diet and exercise regimen. I really didn't get why
Lmao I loved desperate housewives and I rewatch it when I can
Another awesome video, well worth the wait. Keep it up💙
Thank you for sticking around 💕💕
The meme in the beginning was hilarious
🥰💕
keep it going girl, love ur vids ❤️
Thank you for watching 💕💕
I love your videos! They are so educational and entertaining. I would love it if you did a video on the dieting and exercise that Kpop Idols do.
Thanks for the suggestion, interestingly I don’t know much about K-pop but have watched some videos on that - I’ll see if I can come up with a fresh take :)
Love this type of video. Super well done and researched
Thank you for watching 💕💕
I was missing your videos. Que bom que estas de volta 😘
Awww 💕💕 obrigada pelo carinho 🥰
I recently watched first episode of the show out of sentiment. What struck me, all these actreses were so thin. I did not notice first time watching it becouse I was in my 20s and depressed so I was very thin myself. Now in my 30s not depressed and not skinny i was really struck by this
I love to be skinny. Nothing wrong with that. I eat a well planned diet and exercise zo achive a certain look.
Why do you act like being skinny is linked to mental diseases?
@@CordeliaWagner I was talking about my expierence
I love your channel
Thank you so much for the support 💕💕
this whole video is so weird... obsessing over this one show and its impact on ed's in women, but then obsessively recreating their diets, including their weight, doing their workouts...? what was the reasoning behind that? you are just reproducing all that shit. i feel like you want to recreate channels that discuss cultural phenomena, but it falls completely flat.
