The relationship (if you can call it that, which I believe you can) between Fran and Maxwell's first wife is so sweet. She loves those kids like her own, but is never so jealous as to want them to forget their mother who passed. Maxwell will ALWAYS love her, and he loves Fran too. She gives the two her blessing from the afterlife because Fran is a great person who will make her family happy.
Maxes first wife, Sarah. Absolutely demo started HER sense of humor in selecting FRAN, of ALL the world, to bring Joy to her children and her childhood love. 🎉🎉🎉I like to think Sarah had a delicious sense of the absurd, constantly ROARING with laughter as she watched her selection of The Nanny become her children's beloved guidebooks and comforter. What greater gift could a mother provide under the circumstances?❤❤❤🎉

@@dustinwashburn1283 About the only one who didn't consistently was Sylvia because of the jokes she was involved in but even she had her scene with Morty.
Agreed. It's such a fun and feel good show full of laugh out loud and touching moments. It's aged really well, the chemistry between Fran and Maxwell is perfect with lots of funny lines in every scene between them. Watching it as an adult I'm realising how many jokes would've gone straight over my head as a kid. 😂
@@janettewebster2151 absolutely, and she is one of the few that can do it. I remember when will & grace tried to do a Lucy thing…it wasn’t ummmm, as delightful as I would have hoped.
I never minded that The Nanny followed most of the typical will-they-won't-they sitcom beats. As you said, it wasn't meant to be innovative, it was just supposed to be a fun show, and it sure was. I kind of see it as a fairytale for and from the 90s (Drescher once called her vision a 'Sound of Music for the 90s'), and fat jokes and people-who-need-therapy-are-all-kooks jokes aside, I feel like it aged better than Friends.
Call it wrong but I still giggle like a kid at those jokes. I too sometimes feel a bit kooky still desspite therapy LOL Underneath _The Nanny_ had a kind of family warmth that I never really felt with _Friends._ I think that's the magic.
Wasn't THAT into Friends(if it was all there was.. .ok), And Hated Seinfeld. But, LOVED THE NANNY!!!! ❤ Friends was SOO MUCH of Joey's sex-capades... comin on to EVERY Woman, whooo was sneakin round with one of the others. Yeess their "sexual" undertones here n there... but it wasn't so In Your Face! Bein from Arkansas myself...findin out Daniel Davies was from Arkansas.... THAT.. FLOORED ME when I first read about that some years ago!!! 😮😮
@@awandererfromys1680the nanny, the characters do seem like a real family. They bicker and argue but they really do care about each other. That's what I like😊
I think the joke was usually Fran (and other characters) misusing therapy rather than poking fun at people who need it. Grace is eccentric and uses therapy-speak and it is meant to be startling and funny, but it's more about her being too grownup for her age. Which is something Fran slowly remedies by allowing her to be a child again (while also continuing to provide her with therapy). And Sylvia was not made fun of for being fat, but for being obsessed with food. Yes, there's an element of Fran always watching her figure and instructing others, including Sylvia, to do the same so they can look as good as possible. But it's like saying the show is ageist because she also worries about getting old; it's not, it fundamentally celebrates older people living their best life narratively; same with showing Fran enjoying eating and in general not actually enforcing the narrative of fat=bad, ugly, funny. Fat is not the butt of the joke.
The nanny should get same popularity as Seinfeld , friends , fresh prince of Bel air . They got so many funny characters and Fran and Charles had very good chemistry and also Daniel Davis and Lauren Lane.
Those other shows were on NBC. Network affiliation can often have long term effects. NBC promoted the hell out of their sitcoms, especially their Thursday night lineup.
In Germany "The Nanny" is FAR more popular than "Seinfeld" or "Fresh Prince of Bel Air". Many Germans don't even know "Seinfeld" but we all know and love "The Nanny".
I always found Seinfeld average at best. With maybe 3 minutes or so of absolute rofl moments per episode. Friends has aged worse than ANY sitcom in history. It's borderline unwatchable these days. Fresh Prince was of it's time. That's totally unwatchable these days. The Nanny is just chock full of likeable characters. Which is in my opinion what keeps it fresh.
The Nanny (and Fran Drescher) is an American staple! So many Jewish writers, comics and actors struggled so that it could be possible for a girl like Fran to become America's darling. Now Fran is the president of SAG-AFTRA and many studio executives worst nightmare, but she'll always be this gorgeous, gregarious Goddess from Queens to me. Still can't believe Daniel Davis is from Arkansas. ❤❤❤❤
I recently rewatched the show, bought the whole series for my mom as a birthday present. I was shocked at how colorful and stylish Fran’s clothes were. I took that for granted as a teen
Yeah seeing her outfits in clips of the show as an adult I can appreciate how amazing she looks in those outfits. Her level of style and flair was truly off the charts. She really did pop in every scene she was in. I don’t even care if the reality is the outfits she wears cost way more than what someone on a Nanny’s salary could realistically afford. She was just way too stunning for any of that to matter.
Agreed! Maggie’s fashion especially is so cute as the show goes on and I love how they dress Gracie, first like a sweet little Victorian baby doll and then like a mini-Fran. Brenda Cooper the stylist was clearly so passionate and it shows.
I always thought Niles and CC actually did make sense to me romantically because most of the time, it felt like the remarks and jokes was friendly most of the time, i mean, they both had moments where it stepped over the line, and with the wealth and class differences, i see how it would have been downplayed into insulting, but i don’t know, i always thought it worked better than most.
Too, like ther is stuff that ewasy can be put on the , yeah its bloody tv, whta relationships are there healthy, plus it makes sense given their chemestr
So many great memories watching this show with my sister. Even though this show was definitely silly at times, there was something about it that felt so real. It really felt like a window into another world, I will always love Fran, the Nanny we all need, haha
Traditional English style Butlers are always referred to by their surname, like Carson in Downton Abbey (not Mr Carson, just Carson). Though I don’t know how I knew this as a child watching the Nanny. Not many butlers, English or otherwise, in regional Australia.
As a fat person, Sylvia’s jokes never bothered me. The jokes weren’t always about her being fat but more about her love of food and it being so absurd. Donating a cake you licked the icing off of? Lol come on!
It is the over-offended young generation that wants to cancel anything that could hurt anyone. But everything could hurt anyone, like Maxwell's wealth could offend poor viewers. I had Depression and there are several jokes on shrinks, therapy and brighton jokes about his little sister who has an issue with mental health. I love it, I learn to laugh about myself which is a way for cure and building self-esteem. Trying to save everyone from anything that could offend anyone, that leads to humourless oversenitive character. The Silvia jokes never ever denied the love for her.
Fun fact: Does anyone remembers that movie "The Beautician and the Beast"? Fran played a character similar to the Nanny, so in Spanish, the film was retitled "La niñera y el presidente" (The Nanny and the President).
@@thatvalensteingirl It's from 1997, the Nanny was already in its 4th season. And it was because of the success of the Nanny that Fran was able to make this movie.
THE BIGGER THE HAIR THE SMALLER THE HIPS! thank you for everything, Fran. You've shaped and inspired me. And thank you Jose, after all these years, for covering The Nanny too
Fact! 🤣 Growing up near Dallas, Texas in the 80’s, the goal was to have “Texas Big Hair.” “The bigger the hair, the closer to God.” 🤣 I kinda miss the big hair days. We had a lot of fun! As an adult watching The Nanny, Fran and her style made that show even better than it already was. ❤
This is one of few sitcoms where I feel that every single element worked. The cast were all spotless, the writing was excellent, the humor and acting of such humor was top-notch. Plus it's one of few shows that got the will-they-won't-they trope right, because both relationships had an actual payoff. The supporting cast were all great too, especially Sylvia and Yetta. One of my favorite shows to this day!
I was raised on The Nanny, it was such a great show. I think her fashion was so formative for me, all bold colors and slightly eccentric prints. I definitely think this show is why I love those things. Also the back-and-forth quips between Niles and CC definitely influenced my humor. But then again I also watched Frasier growing up xD
I adored this show growing up, watched it every week. It was really great to have a funny, female, Jewish lead actor to look up to and I think Fran Drescher is so incredibly sharp. And the theme song STILL SLAPS.
I think The Nanny being made of contradictions is what makes it such a beloved show for queer people. Many of us grow up having to learn the rules of gender and sexuality from the outside, we have to learn these things to fit in at first for survival and then as a kind power we uniquely hold. It also helps Fran Drescher is such a steadfast queer ally, I'm sure I'm not the only queer 90's kid who saw themselves in The Nanny to some degree even if we didn't understand what it was we saw.
Yessss absolutely I watched this show religiously as a little gaybie. I probably saw every episode two or three times every time they reran it on different channels!
I'm a male who's straight but I stilled loved the Nanny and Fran Drescher. You all don't have a patent on appreciating such shows as the Golden Girls or the Nanny just because you are Gay. We should all be able to appreciate that brand of comedy and silliness.
I'm Russian, so I had My Wonderful Nanny (Моя прекрасная няня) when I was very little, and I remember loving it so much, I still remember every word of the opening theme (which was also animated like the original), I remember the wedding episode very vividly and how happy I was. Russian nanny Vika was actually made to be Ukrainian, from Mariupol, and she moved to Moscow at 15. It makes my heart break how much everything has changed since 2004 when the 1st season came out. To keep the butler's British sense of humor the writers made it so our Niles, named Konstantin, used to work in the British Embassy. We had many celebrity cameos as well, even our own 7th season with original scripts. They even showed Vika's father in the flesh. I've been waiting for so long for you to do this retrospective, thank you so much Jose! I'm always amazed at how much of the original script the writers try to save in the adapted version. For example, I was on the floor when I realized that Russian 'Married with Children' adaptation kept the episode about Al's trans friend almost fully intact, with little to no changes!
my mother loved this show to the point where my brother and i are named after maxwell and niles. so obviously this show was an important part of my childhood lol. thanks for the look back. Also Fran Drescher is based and iconic!
You and your brother are named after these iconic tv characters! This is the wildest thing I have read in a while! Thanks for sharing, and have a good week. : )
There is a moment in this show that has stuck in my mind forever. It was late in the run so Fran and Mr Sheffield were together and the same with Niles and CC. For reasons I don’t remember Fran was talking to a psychic and her predictions were coming true. The one Fran and Niles were worried about was one where Mr Sheffield would end up in bed with a “leggy blonde.” But when Niles ended up in in a bed with Sheffield for reasons I don’t remember he exclaims, “I was the leggy blonde!” It still makes me laugh. This show holds an inexplicable place in my heart. Maybe as a kid I appreciated the class dynamic. Who’s to say. Now I appreciate Fran Dresher for other reasons. To quote DS9, she’s more than a hero; she’s a union man.
Daniel Davis one of the few american actors who could convincingly act british. In fact so well it didn't even register to me at first that he was born in Arkansas.
Yeah I liked the part at the end where Jose acknowledged her role as SAG-AFTRA president and how forceful she’s been in calling the strike and fighting for labour and how that inspired him to make this video in anticipation of Sony being less than reasonable when it comes to permitting use of clips of the show under fair use.
This was my most wanted and awaited José retrospective and it did not disappoint. The Nanny is my all time favorite sitcom, I watched the reruns of it almost obsessively as a teen and always love coming back to it. As someone who grew up Jewish, I definitely saw a lot of my family in the Fines, and I feel the show had a whole lot of heart.
Same. I love that Jose includes this kind of stuff in these videos. A little over a year ago i had to put my Yorkie down to rest, after getting a great 16 years with him.
I'm so excited for this. So many aspects of Fran Fine's character reminds me of my mother, who was another bold working class girl from the outer boroughs (except Italian and from the Bronx, tho she raised me in Queens)
One of my favourites from the 90's. Yoy wanted to see what Fran was wearing, the snarky lines Niles would throw at C.C and all the hilarious shenanigans. And it is such a comforting series 😊
Wow I can’t believe you did it. This was my family’s favorite show growing up. We all had separate favorite tv shows we loved more, but this is the one we could put on and could satisfy everyone. It was basically our digital campfire. We used up whole blank tape of to record a Nanny marathon, commercials and all, and we just watched that thing over and over again.
Have you thought to record the tape and keep the commercials? You're not getting them back apart from the tape. Put those commercials on YT, people will love that! By recording them I mean rip the tape on a cd then choose the footage.
When I was 10, we moved states and only had rabbit ears for our tv for a time. I found a channel that basically only played The Nanny and Golden Girls back to back and I’m so grateful
As a British person, it is rather amusing that for a prim and proper posh English gentleman they gave him the surname Sheffield. Edit : this show was not on TV in the UK.
Lol i remember the grace joke. She told grace " when you're 20. Ill be 40. When youre 30 ...ill be 40. And when you are 40 you will understand why im still 40 😂
Non ho mai capito come in America riescano a nascondere i documenti di nascita. Nessuno sa la vera età di Fran. Ma quando è stata assunta o si è sposata, i documenti non li ha presentati?
@MM-hf6om -- Iirc it was actually "you're 9, I'm 29, when you're 19, I'll be 29, and when you're 29, you'll understand why I'm still 29". . Fran would never admit to being 30yo, let alone 40yo.
Beautifuly done. I love your work. What a homage to an incredible show. Fran Drescher is one hell of a woman, especially through the actors strike. PAY THE ARTISTS! I am watching this because of the artists involved I this show. Thank you so much. x
The NANNY series absolutely derserves being up there with FRIENDS - it was aired in Denmark & NOW I enjoy it on YT 💪👏👌💯♥️🥰 The humor is out of this world - hilarious & so well scripted. The whole cast is just PERFECT put together & such a joy & laugh . Frans wardrobe is 10/4 - love the style & this goes for everybody in the serie. ♥️🥰🌹🎶👌👏
I loved this show when I was in middle school! I also loved 3rd Rock From The Sun, and I think that would be a fantastic show for a retrospective.... Thank you for another great video as always! 💜
The appendectomy prep is still one of the funniest things I've ever seen on TV 😂 I can't imagine how many takes it took for Niles to walk in with a straight face.
I think also important is the character growth of Fran. Where in the beginning of the show she was obsessed with getting married but later wanted to marry out of love, like in season 5 episode 12 in which Max proposed to her out of guilt and Fran did not accept it. Showing how her character developed in comparison to the beginning of the show.
I went to Catholic school during elementary, so there was no bus for me to take. I would often get up, lazily pull on my uniform, skip breakfast because I was too sleepy to be hungry, then trudge my way down to my mom's room where either Dark Shadows or The Nanny would be on. There was usually just enough time to catch the full episode before my mom would herd me into the car to get to school. I loved Angelique's period costume and sausage curls (in fact, I think her death scene sparked my enduring love of flowy, teal chiffon dresses ...), but Fran was an icon, and The Nanny was always more upbeat and peppy for my tired self. I have several distinct memories of draping myself over clean baskets of laundry yet to be folded and watching the theme dong while humming along, trying not to fall asleep half tucked into a makeshift bed of soft towels and sweaters that smelled fresh and clean, perking up slowly as I laughed at the antics on screen. I have such a fondness for the show. And while I have no inclination for motherhood or caregiving, Fran was unapologetically proud of her femininity in a way that didn't feel overbearing or diminutive. I didn't think about it then, but it is indisputable her brazen fashion, honest emotions, and bold personality helped combat all the subliminal woman-hating and self-loathing instilled by Catholicism. I mean, not enough that I didn't have to go through years of therapy, but enough that I could at least outwardly challenge the shame laid thick onto all parts of womanhood, even while internally struggling to define what type of woman I wanted to be. I still haven't figured it out yet, but I at least came to reconcile my love of fashion, crafting, cozy cups of tea, and soft things doesn't have to contradict my love of playing video games, building computers, woodworking, and traipsing around in the dirt. And of course, I was also poor growing up. Still am, actually. Which, going to a private school, made me and my sisters the odd ones out. I grew up feeling an invisible wall between my peers and myself, and I never learned how to smash through that. But at the very least, it was a rare treat to see a "lower" class woman playing the leading role, and not written entirely to be the butt of the joke. The out-of-touch elites were played for laughs as often as Fran's crassness, and I appreciated that so much.
I went to Catholic school and we had buses to bring us to and from school. Each school is different I guess but it’s weird that so many schools don’t offer busing especially for younger students. My Catholic high school had more wealthy families but my Catholic elementary/middle mostly middle class. And yea being Catholic growing up you definitely see the patriarchy; women are still expected to be obedient or girly interests are seen as less than which is so terrible as we can all like different things but they don’t need to clash or match
This show should get more love by mainstream audiences. I don’t hear a lot of people talk about the show when I think new audiences would enjoy this show
This show will always hold a special place in my heart. Not only is it hilarious and so well done it was also the first thing my freshman college roommate and I bonded over. One of the cable channels would run marathons one Saturday a month so we would curl up and binge it together. Sad I lost touch with her because we had so much fun watching it.
I love these retrospectives…. I only wish there were a lot more! We needs ones on the following shows: Three’s Company, Will and Grace, Friends, Alice, I Love Lucy, 2 Broke Girls, Good Times, Family Matters, Big Bang Theory, oh I could make this list ALL DAY lol
I think the appeal of Niles and CC can only be appreciated if you like characters to be in relationships that are interesting instead of relationships that are aspirational or even realistic. It’s interesting to see characters who dislike each other but are also drawn to each other, and like being around one another as much as they hate it. Characters who are both opposites in some regards but alike in others, which creates this push and pull as their growing tension forces them to confront their fundamental differences and learn how to get over them. Their brand of enemies to lovers is incredibly popular in romance and fandom spaces (the exact fans with the most influence over a show like The Nanny). And it still is! A lot of typical sitcom tropes are still very popular in those spaces today, though theyre treated with an affectionate nod to how cheesy and overdone they can be It’s not meant to be realistic, but very much leaning into the drama and entertainment factor lol
Its pretty much the tropes of a tv couple that bicker all the time but really are interesting, and to be fair, it later was akward banter and changed into more , ewell endearable banter and earnest? Through they are the bickering lovers trope in fiction. But they really do try to communicate better later which seems healthy. Is that enemies to friends to lovers?! Not sure. But if good example.
I always loved the Nanny. It was a part of my childhood and I remember watching the shows final. I know the to shows are very different, but I can't help but think of the Nanny as the 90's equivalent of I Love Lucy and can't help but see similarities in he comedy and certain elements between the two shows.
I am thrilled that you made this! However, this retrospective really could have done with a reference to Mina Le's fashion analysis! I was really expecting that because you also included Matt Baume in your Frasier retrospective!!
This was such a great retrospective. I watched The Nanny all the time back when it was on Nick at Nite. The humor was so good and the chemistry with the cast was really solid too. I'm glad that you brought up the running gag with Fran's mother. I hate fat jokes in general, but that gag always felt weird to me because the character never actually looked fat to begin with. She just liked to eat a lot. Some gags certainly haven't aged well, but the comedy does still generally work well. I kind of liked it when Fran and Maxwell finally got together. While the issues behind the scene does further explain it, there's only so much you can do with characters constantly pining for each other with will they/won't they drama. They arguably spent too long teasing the relationship before they could actually become a couple and get married. It's hard to say if having them get married sooner would have helped the show last longer, especially when I think TV exclusives tend to prefer teasing relationships rather than actually having to write relationships. Six seasons was still a good run and I remember being pretty happy with the finale itself. Boy Meets World and The Nanny were the two sitcoms I had hoped that you'd eventually do retrospectives on when I first discovered your channel, so I'm really happy that you did. I'm sure that I'll enjoy any future sitcom retrospectives too.
I hated how they changed Max's sister in later seasons, but I also get what they were trying to convey. She was far more endearing in her debut episode
I do wonder if in-universe, she changed drastically from her debut due to her failing marriage and possibly, some resentment towards Fran for pushing her to marry Lester in the first place.
@@truefenriz It very well could be. Unfortunately we only saw her in two episodes in the whole series if I'm not mistaken, which made her change in personality so jarring.
I grew up with The Nanny and I’ve always loved it. Looking back at it now, I think it was this show that made Judaism and Jewish culture feel like just another part of American life. It was normalized. I grew up in a very Christian area so I wasn’t exposed to this in my real life. I hope Fran Drescher knows what a positive impact she’s had on American culture.
One of my favorite shows growing up and even now. Fran Drescher is a brilliant comedienne. “The Nanny” really is a spiritual successor to “I Love Lucy”, which is one of the highest compliments I can give it.
When the strike started and I think, it was revealed that Fran Drescher was the leading role for the union, many were surprised. After seeing this retrospective which talks about what a power-woman she is, I am no longer surprised. She really ran her own then and now!
I watched The Beautician and the Beast bc of the nanny. The dogs relate to me. Almost teared up. Also, the show reminded me of a cousin since she was a nanny in a similar situation. Sadly, died from cancer during the whole covid situation.
This show looks so delightful and just watching the retrospective was comforting even though there is no nostalgia for me. There may be in the future once I watch it! In the interviews Fran Drescher is so charismatic as well that I couldn’t help but smile, too and that speech at the strike really turned me into a fan, having never watched anything she was in at this moment.
I grew up watching this show with my father. It had so many re-runs on German TV that I would rewatch the show several times. In the end, I could even memorize whole conversations. I should really watch this with my husband and see if he would enjoy it.
Niles and Fran's friendship was for some reason such a nice thing to have in the show. It reminded me of me and my best friend, two sassy straights gossiping
You highlighted why I loved this show growing up! Fran always having confidence in who she is, even if the situation is challenging, is such a delightful trait.
I can't believe you didn't talk more about the Russian version, as it plays into your talk about "How long can you do the will they/won't they". For those that don't know the Russian version of The Nanny was SO beloved that their Sixth Season opens... to reveal Season 5 was a dream. The Maxwell character never proposed and they did all new original scripts, many of which were actually rejected scripts from The Nanny. Eventually the show DID end like the American on... only for it to get a 7th season that dealt with the death of the Sylvia character (her actress died in real life) and the Fran character's father moving in with the family. While I've never seen it such a thing is an interesting "What If?" for The Nanny
This is one of the shows I watched with my mom growing up. Now that she's gone, reruns offer beautiful memories ❤ *I think the show ended exactly when it should have. It was hard to see it end, but it ended with grace
My brother was a writer for The Nanny. He created the character of Yetta specifically for Anne Morgan Gilbert. The SAG AFTRA strike has been settled but there are a number of actors who are not happy with the terms.
Renee Taylor, prior to The Nanny was a very talented comedy writer. I was in one of her plays back when I was doing AADA's summer program. Lovers and Other Strangers, scene 2.
Thank you so much for covering The Nanny. It’s so much of a comfort watch for me, warts and all. I remember watching it with my mom and grandmother on Mondays when it aired with Cybil.
My wife grew up watching reruns of this show, and I had no idea it existed until a few years ago, when we watched the first few seasons together. A lot of it holds up surprisingly well, despite being - obviously, but nostalgically - very Of Its Time
The Nanny is the only sitcom I can watch repeteadly anytime anywhere and still have a good time no matter what episode is on... Aside from that animated special and the spin-off episode.
I love The Nanny, I've seen it a million times. I highly recommend Hot in Cleveland if you like The Nanny. It does a lot of similar things like being aware its a show and deconstructing sitcom tropes in a fun way. Plus it stars former sitcom actors and they all start out as common sitcom female tropes. There are also a lot of guest stars from other sitcoms. Plus Betty White is apart of the main cast, if that doesnt convince you idk what would.
I’m glad José decided to review Sony-owned sitcoms. They own a huge library of sitcoms ranging from 1950’s classics like Father Knows Best all the way until the just recently ended The Goldbergs. I especially hope he can review Norman Lear’s catalog!
Know what is a very underrated sitcom? The 80s reboot of leave it to beaver (still the beaver 🦫 and new leave it to beaver); it’s on RUclips I recently found it (I was born in the late 80s so I was too little to have remembered it) but I recommend it. Wally and the beaver as well as Eddie and Lumpy have their own children. The Haskell sons are played by Ken Osmonds real life sons and their family is so funny and interesting.
For reasons that I cant completely understand, I watched this religiously as 13 year old straight boy. 😅 Brings back good memories. Side note - Fran Dresher is 66 years old and still 🔥 😊
The Nanny is my favorite classic sitcom and your classic sitcom series is one of my favorite things on the internet. Thank you for blessing us today, Jose! 💖
Honestly, If I had known myself more when I was watching The Nanny as a kid, I would probably have payed a bit more attention to the message (via Sylvia's weight jokes) that you can love food, and have it also be appreciation for actual good food, and learn moderation so it isn't unhealthy to love food. Something I did not actually pick up on until I was about 30 or so and watching re-runs.
I've been introduced to 'The Nanny' via ' la Tata', the Italian version. It was HILARIOUS. The italians have a knack at giving anything an Italian twist. There dubbing actors are brilliant. Silvia was not the mother but the aunt as Francesca had left la Ciociaria to move to New York. It was genius.
I think if cc and niles managed to genuinely open up to eachother their marriage could just work. They're very simmilar in their cynicism and their trust issues and their want for something more in life
Loved this - really enjoyed watching and listening. Why this has not been broadcast and had a wider audience is a shame.... thank you very much from a 'Nanny' fan in the UK :)
I can forgive Shaughnessy dressing in “brown face” only because the purpose was to emphasize that this character was another Mr. Sheffield. It wasn’t about casting a white person and taking the role away from an Arab person. It wasn’t about mocking Arab people. It was about showing that this guy was basically the same guy.
That was a beautiful scene, especially when Sara tells Maxwell that she sent Fran to him. I don't understand why the uploader thought it was weird.

@@janettewebster2151 absolutely, and she is one of the few that can do it. I remember when will & grace tried to do a Lucy thing…it wasn’t ummmm, as delightful as I would have hoped.
Much like Golden Girls, this is comfort tv. I can put any episode on and enjoy it.
And three's company
Same. I bought the whole box set of The Nanny years ago, and I never get tired of it.
I too sometimes feel a bit kooky still desspite therapy LOL
Underneath _The Nanny_ had a kind of family warmth that I never really felt with _Friends._ I think that's the magic.
Wasn't THAT into Friends(if it was all there was.. .ok), And Hated Seinfeld. But, LOVED THE NANNY!!!! ❤
Friends was SOO MUCH of Joey's sex-capades... comin on to EVERY Woman, whooo was sneakin round with one of the others.
Well, that's a little bit crazy, "it aged better than Friends", that's a bit of a bold claim to make right there, bro!
The nanny should get same popularity as Seinfeld , friends , fresh prince of Bel air . They got so many funny characters and Fran and Charles had very good chemistry and also Daniel Davis and Lauren Lane.
Niles and C.C. are a comedy powerduo.
I think it does have the same popularity, among women at least
There were people that thought that Charles Shaughnessy was faking the accent and Daniel Davis was the real brit. That tickled me
Fran is an ICON - her role in the strikes are just as inspiring as her acting career. She’s been stubborn and passionate and I love that about her.
The outfits in this show were great.
Not just Fran's.
I recently rewatched the show, bought the whole series for my mom as a birthday present. I was shocked at how colorful and stylish Fran’s clothes were. I took that for granted as a teen
As I’ve gotten older I’ve really grown to appreciate CC’s wardrobe. It’s gorgeous!
I read that as “just not fran’s” and got ready to throw hands
I always thought Niles and CC actually did make sense to me romantically because most of the time, it felt like the remarks and jokes was friendly most of the time, i mean, they both had moments where it stepped over the line, and with the wealth and class differences, i see how it would have been downplayed into insulting, but i don’t know, i always thought it worked better than most.
Too, like ther is stuff that ewasy can be put on the , yeah its bloody tv, whta relationships are there healthy,
plus it makes sense given their chemestr
Their relationship made sense and I thought it flowed smoothly.
So many great memories watching this show with my sister. Even though this show was definitely silly at times, there was something about it that felt so real. It really felt like a window into another world, I will always love Fran, the Nanny we all need, haha
Some of my favorite memories were watching The Nanny with my grandma. I love your tv retrospectives
I thought I knew everything about this show, but the fact that Niles is Niles' last name shook me to my core.
Lol come on!
absolutely!! But no one can joke because jokes are not allow nowdays
I agree !!
I loved that she loved food and looked sexy. Sensual character.
@@isabellegauthier4318 that is true, she really was and felt confident. I try to learn that from her.
Representation by just letting people be who they are and do the things they would normally do is major.
Fun fact: Does anyone remembers that movie "The Beautician and the Beast"? Fran played a character similar to the Nanny, so in Spanish, the film was retitled "La niñera y el presidente" (The Nanny and the President).
I thought that movie was meant to be like a backdoor pilot for The Nanny.
@@thatvalensteingirl It's from 1997, the Nanny was already in its 4th season. And it was because of the success of the Nanny that Fran was able to make this movie.
I actually love that movie and was surprised it wasn't mentioned in this video. It's not great art but it's a fun movie.
The first 20/25 minutes of that movie is off the hook funny.
The actor was Timothy Dalton... 007 james bond
THE BIGGER THE HAIR THE SMALLER THE HIPS!
thank you for everything, Fran.
You've shaped and inspired me.
And thank you Jose, after all these years, for covering The Nanny too
she truly was ahead of her time.
Fact! 🤣 Growing up near Dallas, Texas in the 80’s, the goal was to have “Texas Big Hair.”
“The bigger the hair, the closer to God.” 🤣 I kinda miss the big hair days.
1:05:55 that sound she makes falling off the boat is so realistic to me somehow. Not a giant cartoon scream, but just a little yelp of pure shock
I should have known I was gay by how much I loved Fran
I'm a male who's straight but I stilled loved the Nanny and Fran Drescher. You all don't have a patent on appreciating such shows as the Golden Girls or the Nanny just because you are Gay. We should all be able to appreciate that brand of comedy and silliness.
@@TMcConnaughhayNowhere in the original post did he say that.

This really does feel the funniest time to do this considering what good old Fran has been up to these past few months.
I think that might have been the inspiration! I love it when my childhood favorites hold up. I am so disappointed by Roseanne
@@rollerblaze5041 I think it's because it's the show's anniversary. They're also reposting a Fran outfit a day on insta because of it
Yeah I liked the part at the end where Jose acknowledged her role as SAG-AFTRA president and how forceful she’s been in calling the strike and fighting for labour and how that inspired him to make this video in anticipation of Sony being less than reasonable when it comes to permitting use of clips of the show under fair use.
More recently she's been calling for genocide but whatever

This was my most wanted and awaited José retrospective and it did not disappoint. The Nanny is my all time favorite sitcom, I watched the reruns of it almost obsessively as a teen and always love coming back to it. As someone who grew up Jewish, I definitely saw a lot of my family in the Fines, and I feel the show had a whole lot of heart.
Oh, I wasn’t ready for the section about Chester. I felt that poem deeply. Over the summer we lost our 14yr old dog. Thank you for sharing that.
The Italian dub turned Fran into a Jewish Italian called Francesca Caccace from Frozinone. Good to know for your mama!
There are Italian Jews
One of my favourites from the 90's. Yoy wanted to see what Fran was wearing, the snarky lines Niles would throw at C.C and all the hilarious shenanigans. And it is such a comforting series 😊
The appendectomy scene is one of the best moments in TV history.
"Bucking for a raise?" Ahhhhh love Niles.
This show, the golden girls, murder she wrote - all partially shaped my humor as a kid lol
When I was 10, we moved states and only had rabbit ears for our tv for a time. I found a channel that basically only played The Nanny and Golden Girls back to back and I’m so grateful
Rachel Bloom writing the lyrics for a Nanny musical? Sounds like a perfect fit!
Or a musical about yettas letters?
As a British person, it is rather amusing that for a prim and proper posh English gentleman they gave him the surname Sheffield.
Edit : this show was not on TV in the UK.

Explain what Sheffield means

Most likely that was a joke.

Fran stating she’s 29 over the years is so funny and we wonder how old she really was. Now being 36 I see why she would lie and say she’s 29 again
@MM-hf6om -- Iirc it was actually "you're 9, I'm 29, when you're 19, I'll be 29, and when you're 29, you'll understand why I'm still 29".
.
Fran would never admit to being 30yo, let alone 40yo.
This is gonna be the first TV retrospective I'm watching on José's channel. I'm excited! 😍
Enjoy the ride, and watch the rest. He's great.
Scrubs, Frasier, and Parks and Rec retrospectives are also excellent!
The Nanny certainly had style and grace - love the show and love Fran Drescher
♥️🥰🌹🎶👌👏
I feel like the evolution of Fran’s eyebrows is as iconic as the show itself
I loved this show when I was in middle school! I also loved 3rd Rock From The Sun, and I think that would be a fantastic show for a retrospective....
Thank you for another great video as always! 💜
yess i used to watch that all the time!
I was obsessed with 3rd Rock from the Sun got a while in school
I don’t hear a lot of people talk about the show when I think new audiences would enjoy this show
With Mathew Perry's recent passing, this would be a good time to do a retrospective on Friends.
I just binged this whole series like a month ago. I love this show! And Fran in real life is a inspiration. I think I'm going to rewatch it again.
What are you watching it on? Like are you streaming it? Or do you own the seasons on DVD or something?
@@karmAnonymous it's on HBO max
A lot of typical sitcom tropes are still very popular in those spaces today, though theyre treated with an affectionate nod to how cheesy and overdone they can be
It’s not meant to be realistic, but very much leaning into the drama and entertainment factor lol
Thank you so much for making this. I love Fran and The Nanny.
"Imaginary Friend" and "I Don't Remember Mama" are two of my favorite episodes... so beautiful ❤
Thank you for this outstanding and entertaining analysis of my ABSOLUTE favourite sitcom of the 1990ies
I always loved the Nanny. It was a part of my childhood and I remember watching the shows final. I know the to shows are very different, but I can't help but think of the Nanny as the 90's equivalent of I Love Lucy and can't help but see similarities in he comedy and certain elements between the two shows.
I always saw it similarly to I Love Lucy too! Especially when she and her best friend get into scrapes.
Yes! And it seems to me that after Fran & Max married, the show could have evolved into a version of Lucy & Ricky's I Love Lucy charm!
"I'm so glad you didn't exaggerate the hair" is such a Sylvia line from real life !
I know! They completely changed her character
I do wonder if in-universe, she changed drastically from her debut due to her failing marriage and possibly, some resentment towards Fran for pushing her to marry Lester in the first place.
@@truefenriz It very well could be. Unfortunately we only saw her in two episodes in the whole series if I'm not mistaken, which made her change in personality so jarring.
i had to stop myself from pausing every few seconds to screenshot the outfits, they're so damn good
I grew up with The Nanny and I’ve always loved it. Looking back at it now, I think it was this show that made Judaism and Jewish culture feel like just another part of American life. It was normalized. I grew up in a very Christian area so I wasn’t exposed to this in my real life. I hope Fran Drescher knows what a positive impact she’s had on American culture.
That was excellent. I’m a huge fan of Fran dress and everything she’s done! Good job.
One of my favorite shows growing up and even now. Fran Drescher is a brilliant comedienne.
“The Nanny” really is a spiritual successor to “I Love Lucy”, which is one of the highest compliments I can give it.
Wonderful video! Just a small note that a false pregnancy can be just as tragic as a miscarriage if they had set their hearts on it.
My own dog lived to be almost 20 and I 100% felt the end of the Chester poem. It really does come too soon.
This show is honestly underrated as a sitcom; loveable characters, surprisingly funny banter, and a solid cast all around
I grew up watching this show with my father. It had so many re-runs on German TV that I would rewatch the show several times. In the end, I could even memorize whole conversations. I should really watch this with my husband and see if he would enjoy it.
Listen I love The Nanny so much, it was my favorite show as a kid and will ALWAYS be one of my favorite comfort shows
Niles and Fran's friendship was for some reason such a nice thing to have in the show. It reminded me of me and my best friend, two sassy straights gossiping
In Sweden, this was so popular. Pretty sure a lot of people still rewatch it from time to time
You highlighted why I loved this show growing up!
Now that she's gone, reruns offer beautiful memories ❤
*I think the show ended exactly when it should have. It was hard to see it end, but it ended with grace
My brother was a writer for The Nanny. He created the character of Yetta specifically for Anne Morgan Gilbert.
The SAG AFTRA strike has been settled but there are a number of actors who are not happy with the terms.
Apearently the voice actors got screwed over, and werent asked. God voice actors wont ever taken as pretty hard acting it is, wont it.
This is my favorite show of all time. Thanks for covering it!
It's always a good day when José drops more in-depth, thoughtful content.
Side note - Fran Dresher is 66 years old and still 🔥
😊
The Nanny is my favorite classic sitcom and your classic sitcom series is one of my favorite things on the internet. Thank you for blessing us today, Jose! 💖
As a mum i dont have time as much as I used but I always love your retrospectives and definitely take my time to enjoy it ❤ thanks for making them
She had style! She had flair! She was THERE! That’s how she became the nanny 💅🏼
For me The Nanny is like comfort food from childhood. Perfect for when you're sick and have to stay in bed 💜
she was the first style icon i remember trying to emulate she was so fun!!!
I love The Nanny! I even have my 10 month old watching it..she loves the theme song!!
Can we also appreciate how this show is still so damn hilarious too, where a lot of older sitcoms just… aren’t, in retrospect? 😂
