Hello hello! Totally agree with all the points that has been covered and I do agree that there is a preference for local uni students vs private ones at a lot of places. However, I just want to tell my fellow private uni friends that there are alot of ways to reduce this disparity and you should focus on developing your own branding. We have an added advantage which is that we finish school usually 2-3 years before our friends. Capitalize on that. Do internships even if they’re not compulsory, build your resume and skills and you can potentially earn higher than local uni students. It worked for me and hopefully it works for all of you. My colleague graduated with first class honours in Mathematics. Everytime she presents her analysis on trends and projections, I was so in awed of her presentation and also struggled to figure out how she could do it so fast and so well.
Something to add is that our university is often a quality indicator for employers. Safe to assume private university students are there because of a lack of placement in local universities.
Looking at the numbers, only the top 30% of O level's cohort is eligible for A level curriculum, and of the A level cohort perhaps 80% make it to a local university. For the poly route, it used to be top 10% of cohort will be able to place at local uni. To employers this is an excellent indicator that local uni grads are of the top 30ish% of their cohorts.
While yes there may be diamonds in the rough in private universities. But imagine being a manager with one of your critical staff leaving and needing to find a replacement. Are you going to risk it and find that diamond? Or are you going for the safer option?
Ultimately its a matter of statistics. The high demand for local uni grads are due to the their filtering process of accepting the top 30% and the consistency in competency levels in their graduates.

I agree, I completely agree. That’s why I would prefer to get my degree in a private uni, go overseas and find a better job with an environment that I would probably enjoy much more, because I don’t fit in that 80% of people that goes to a local uni after As and neither is the degree I am interested in a niche of Singapore. It is the truth that crème of the crops are needed in Singapore, esp since we’re such a small country and manpower is one of our main driving forces in Singapore, so I think personally leaving for me is a better option. And I think more people should not be upset by this fact but instead try a different method that would be feasible for them

I feel that maybe the difference in pay for local vs private uni could also be due to the total curriculum time? 4yrs in NUS/NTU as compared to an accelerated 2yrs in private uni, you would have already make more than enough to cover the disparity :) by the time the local uni graduate start looking for a job, you might even be their supervisor already.

Local vs Private Uni --- what a loaded question to throw.
Did not grad from local uni but I generally feel that local uni students tend to work smart, learn faster, and have more control over personal anxieties and stresses. As long as you filter out some of the crazies. Plus the internship, I feel that 3.5k is reasonable. And the 2.8k is mostly for average private uni students. If you get a second upper or first class in a private uni, you can get a higher salary as well. At the end of the day, I think if you don't stress yourself out to compete with the rest of your batch, Singapore is a place where if you set your mind on it, and don't have kids, you can get close to where you want to be. You just have to work at it until you get there. I mean, you get 3.5k but if you don't get promoted and just accept $100 increment every year, also no use right? The median salary now is 7.4k for degree holders. And I don't think having a local uni cert affects how fast you get to that median salary.
NUS grad here! I think it will be much more contentious when you look at STEM fields and every stone's throw hits a Masters or PhD or even multiple masters and doctorates - then you question where you draw the line!

Just putting it out there... NUS / NTU degrees will always have an advantage. But having said that, depends on what degree. Meaning if you have a marketable degree vs NUS humanities degree, then the private marketable degree (but with lower salary) is preferred.
But if you can, go with NUS/NTU/SMU... else life is going to be tough. And there is no need to be smug just cos you're from NUS/NTU - they are just schools, life is much more than that.

There was a time in Singapore where after PSLE, a student could enter ITE...That however did not last long as the reputation of ITE could not be soundly and accurately thought through as a 12 year old child. Now society is a little more accepting towards ITE Students but back in the days when this plan was allowed, ITE was seen as a Dropout's last chance for a better life. To label a 12 year old who is unable to complete PSLE and label them a dropout, was kinda far stretch in those days, let along to day's standards of education.
Point made here is that Reputation plays such a big part in society that the government recognises its implications, so going into a less desirable Uni for example...Will really alter your career and livelihood for countless years and maybe even decades. So Choose Wisely, Its not a do or die scenario if you are in the midst of choosing a Uni but certainly its a Sprint or Walk type of advantages you gonna get for a local over a Private Uni.

Next overseas university grads vs local grads. (There should be a diverse range from Harvard to like Australian Universities). Should be fun.
Yeah but it's highly dependent on the job role! For example Software Engineers don't really care about GPA, while for Quantitative Trading it's the first thing they look at.
@@JustARand0mThought you're a quant yourself? yeap i noticed that quant roles places alot of emphasis on academic achievements, most of the time they only want masters and above but i think thats well warranted for the mathematical complexity required for the role, and how academics are definitely the best way to measure that at the moment.
@@DXcl1no IN GENERAL that's what quants look at when hiring.
to be honest it's a rather fledgling field, and another thing about it is how the consensus of measuring skill is really noooot that clear cut here and there. its less clear cut than traditional finance, because someone might say, oh, you took 300 lines from my first code then tweaked it, and now your algorithm is blowing mine out the water, but the idea came from me, so part of that 20% should be mine etc. etc. some interviews with jim simons talk about this too.
and math, because of the incredible rigour that it puts its academic learners through, has a very good name, and hence its GPA is seen to be more trustworthy as well. my friend doing HR tells me that she looks out for math olympiad people a lot. at many levels, lower than country, still highly respected.
there are other things you can do apart from GPA, but they are rarer and more of the "uninterested genius" kind. like if you explained from scratch how you developed an engine that competed with one of the current top chess engines. or like aws deepracer participation. of course, you have to demonstrate your fundamental understanding of NN and not just how you imported that whole shit from pandas.
@@DXcl1no Yupp but I'm not in a top firm yet haha. I still have a long way to go. Agree with what you said! Also with a low GPA it means your stats/math won't be strong enough to pass the technical interviews in the first place.

This could be made alot more interesting if it was done anonymously! Could tell some of the interviewees were being politically correct and afraid of airing their unpopular opinions.
I think there are pros and cons for each university. You just have to choose the program that most suits your needs, budget, timing, etc. You need to just be very clear going in what your advantages and disadvantages are.
It is true that going to the top 3 will help you get that banking or MNC job more easily but the time commitment makes you do almost nothing but study.
On the other hand, I have friends who did reasonably well in their A levels and still chose to go to private universities to give them the flexibility to do their own thing. During my internship at a manufacturing company, I found out that one of our suppliers was the same age as me and studying business at UOL. Between classes, he would run a small logistics company using his dad van to help transport components between companies. My fellow intern was studying logistics at NTU while this guy was actually doing it in real life.
It's not for every major in NUS that you have to go for internships though, depends on your course.
Mostly it's the engineering faculty's courses/majors that insist on internships, except for computer engineering as it's jointly administered with the Computing School too, which lets you do FYP in-lieu (might be a legacy of the School being formerly a department within the Science faculty, whose policy is similar, while Engineering requires both, though Industrial & Systems engineering lets you do a 3 instead of 6-month internship as its design project has more collab with companies than other courses, helping to make up for the job XP, but shorter internships are harder to find I heard though.) However I heard the Computing school previously was considering extending internships to 18 months, which my classmate joked was perhaps an attempt to be able to charge the same school fees while teaching less (since the course's length would probably remain the same @ 4 yrs, so a longer internship means less modules, & we're charged the same school fees even in semesters where we do fewer modules due to internship)
and in NUS, you can choose to S/U after seeing your grades😂
SMU grad here, back when I was looking for my first job with a 3.3 GPA (which qualifies no 'honours' as pointed out by SMU interviewee), I had to keep explaining that our GPA was out of 4 and not 5, and kept getting inquisitive stares by the doubtful interviewers.
Hi what course were you in? I'm pretty sure if you're at least in IT, portfolio matters more because it actually serves as a credibility as well as an indicator of your proficiency and practicality level
Should ask the interviewer to check with the school if they don't believe you so they could modify their wrong expectation.

The grading system is pretty tough in my opinion:
4.0 GPA Grading System
A (High Distinction) - 93% and above - 4.0 Grade Points
A- (High Distinction) - 90%-92..99% - 3.670 Grade Points
B+ (Superior) - 87.0%-89.99% - 3.330 Grade Points
B (Superior) - 83.0%-86.99% - 3.000 Grade Points
B- (Superior)- 80.0%-82.99% - 2.670 Grade Points
C+ (Average)- 77.0%-79.99% - 2.330 Grade Points
C (Average)- 73.0%-76.99% - 2.000 Grade Points
C- (Average)- 70.0%-72.99% - 1.670 Grade Points
D+ (Minimal Passing Grade)- 67.0%-69.99% - 1.330 Grade Points
D (Minimal Passing Grade)- 60%-66.99% - 1.000 Grade Points
F (Failure)- Below 60% - 0
But if you happen to get below 2.2 for one semester, you'll receive a warning, and if it continues you'll be kicked from the program.
The honours isn't too bad though:
3.2- Cum Laude
3.5- Magna Cum Laude
3.75- Summa Cum Laude
It's super hard to even get honours though.

The truth is, as an employer, the education system filters the population. For someone to win, there must be someone that lose. For highly competitive roles, I’m always looking for ‘target’ unis. The students there are both good technically and possess great interpersonal skills. The line blurs, if we are talking about less competitive roles, like marketing/social service/insurance agents etc.
Could I know what competitive roles would it be?
Same im an employer. I don't usually hire local degree by default. I see graduates who have high work rate and know other skills to support their education e.g power bi, agile trained, tableu and so on

Generally, NUS/NTU/SMU trumps everyone else. Generally.
But for a fact, local trumps private unis. You and I know that.
And the cream of the crop are in NUS med and law. You cannot deny this.
One small suggestion for the video editing, it could be easier if there's some indication about which school they are talking about in the subtitles, although they've already introduced their schools in the beginning.
Studied in RMIT for my bachelor degree and SMU for my Masters degree. I hate to say this but yes, there is a huge difference between local and private. I feel much more motivated to study in the SMU because you literally see everyone in the library studying or having a study group to discuss questions. TAs are there to help you. There’s career grooming and other curriculum which prepares you into the working world. But private university not very much. Maybe have but not compulsory so no one really cares. :/

In NUS I had a module with it's own FB gp, where you're supposed to submit assignments weekly, & on the week that Assignment 4 was due, some classmates were saying they were sad because they weren't allowed to submit Assignment 7 yet

Hi, will part time local diploma and work study local polytechnic diploma have trouble entering private universities to study full time undergraduate studies not local university.
Please guide me as I think WSDip Diplomas earned from local polys & Part time diplomas from local polys whether qualified enough to get to entries private universities like (University of London,University of murdoch,etc..)?

It's a one side leaning viewpoint, no hard contrasting opinion and all from a softer skill degree (ie. not STEM).
The learning attitude you have in learn prevails over GPA in any form when you join the workforce. I have worked with colleagues from prestigious university, yet they do not carry the idea or concept of ever-learning. They just choose to find the easy way out and refuse to work under difficult conditions just because " I have pushed myself so hard in Uni m so I am not cut out to do such menial task ". The winds of life do bring you to places where you have never expect yourselves to be. Embrace every opportunity, put down the ego, be very very very Hungry.

@@confidence652 There is a stark difference in " easy ways to do hard things " and " easy way out" in my context here. Optimizing workflow and process is definitely welcomed across any industry and environment, however in some places you might be met with resistance and reluctance to change/improvise which can be frustrating if you are a junior executive.
Exact same situation as Depi. Bachelor's in Psychology intending help people. No chance from anywhere psychology. Gave up on the industry and am excelling elsewhere totally unrelated. In hindsight, I sometimes do appreciate the industry for never giving me a chance AT ALL.
Heard some professions e.g. architecture, psychology require further studies @ Masters level too
to answer 17:19- yes for ntu and nus. As for SMU, i heard that the curriculums are gravitated more towards seminars and there are also projects within the module. I am from SIT and I can say that for SIT that will never be the case. Aside from the conventional lectures and labs that we have which require us to submit group reports, we have at least 1 project module almost every semester. Good or bad, its up to you to think; but extremely useful for resumes and most importantly, EASY TO PASS LOL
As someone working in a MNC for 2 years and from a private university, I actually found out that there’s not much difference between a private university and local university, UNLESS you’re looking into a government sector job, which most of the time they’re looking for local grads.
Just because someone is from a local university doesn’t mean that he’s good at his work. I’ve seen people who are graduates from local university doing shit work with shit attitude, not willing to learn or take initiative at work, while another person who has a private degree but who’s eager to learn and completely opposite. Ultimately is their working attitude.
Unfortunately some companies just don’t see it that way, it’s just how society works I guess.
Probably because staff in MNCs are more likely to interact with colleagues in other countries than gov't staff, so they might have a broader view of how things are done in other countries too & thus are better able to compare how acceptable or not the more traditional perceptions in SG are e.g. emphasis on honours classification. MNCs might also want to standardise policies across their offices/factories etc. in different countries, so if other countries' branches don't discriminate against private unis as much, the SG branches might be less able to do so as well

Let me tell you all the truth, it doesn't really matter. a fresh grad is a fresh grad in the market and no one will kind of take you seriously outside until you have worked a few years and grind it through. I have seen plenty of F'd up local fresh grad at work and really good private Uni students. working life is different from studying.
There are a lot of ways to gain experience and definitely not necessarily to get higher education.
What you do on your free time tells prospective employers a lot on how passionate you are about the job.
SIT and SUTD can’t compare, these 2 unis offer pretty specialized courses and are significantly new unis. For eg. SIT is the only uni that offers the allied health courses (where students used to come from JCs only) and SUTD is pretty elite (tryna become the MIT of Asia). So to say SIT or SUTD is inferior in rankings to NUS and NTU is not accurate
Many popular university ranking metrics are highly weighed on research performance. The employablily of a graduate has little correlation to the university research performances. It got to do with the relevancy of the course content.

Lets be realistic here. Generally speaking, an average student in private uni is unlikely to do as well in a local uni. A good student from private uni may do well in local uni as well if he or she is a late bloomer. Based on personal experience in the workplace, local uni grads are generally way smarter and better at work than private uni grad. The difference is starker when it comes to research and venturing into the unknown.

Total number of people includes you. Hence, the total number of people will always be larger than the number of people below you and percentile will never reach 100.

Degree is not everything. Depending on the industry, accreditations are more important and recognised then just a degree.

As an SMU grad, i would slightly disagree with how the SMU kid described the honor classes in SMU. I don't think things in SMU are as bad as he described. Firstly, SMU, which follows the US grading system, should not be compared side by side with the UK grading system (which is what NTU and NUS are based off on). He is right to benchmark the first class equivalent at 3.8, but typically employers seem to consider second upper to be within the range of 3.4 to 3.79, whereas he is considering it from 3.6 to 3.79.
The most obvious argument for this is to use Ministry of Law's requirements for the Bar exams, and then compare SMU and NUS grading systems. To qualify as a Bar exam candidate, you need to graduate with at least a 2nd lower from NUS Law, or a 3.0 GPA requirement from SMU Law. Note how MinLaw does not say "2nd lower from SMU Law" or even "Merit from SMU Law" (where Merit is the grade given for a 3.0), because MinLaw knows that a 3.0 (i.e. straight Bs in SMU) is equivalent to a 2nd lower (i.e. straight Bs in NUS).
Therefore, overall, it is harder to get a first class equivalent in SMU, so he is right, but after that, the playing field is slightly more leveled. That said, there is also the soft cap of percentile, where a 4.5 may not guarantee a FCH in NUS on the basis that FCHs are only awarded to the top 5% (relative scoring) as opposed to a hard 4.5 cap (absolute scoring). But I do not know enough about this and its largely hearsay from friends over at NUS.
NUS you get 1st class honours so long your CAP is >=4.50/5 I remember; that top 5% quota (within each course/major) you're saying is for qualifying for the Dean's List each semester, but considers only the grades of the modules you took within that sem (to give you the Semester Average Point (SAP)). Meanwhile I heard 1 of my coursemates had a streak of Dean's List for ~4 consecutive semesters, until she did my course's compulsory design project (group work), where every group member gets the same grade, which for her group was B+, sadly breaking her streak

Lol I am from NUS with a good classification and I am only earning below 3 in an agency - way below my peers who are earning a 3.5-4. My company does not compensate for my good honours degree - for it to make a diff, it has to be the bigger companies / govt

SIT student here, SIT has an internal bell curve that is not revealed explicitly to the students. As SIT has a combination of many courses offered both by the school and other overseas institutes the quality of education really depends on who and where the lecturers/profs are from. As a whole (for my course at least) the quality of educators in SIT really vary, some are really good and go all the way while some are really bad. Perhaps years down the road SIT will build a name for itself and improve on the quality of their lecturers.
and also, may I check if the modular credits for SIT is a lot? I saw for some courses, their modules on average have a range of between 5 to 7 MCs. that really has a huge bearing on the GPA. as compared to NUS/ NTU where the average is 3-4 MCs per module.
@@nadiahisa9827 well it really depends, its a ratio kind of thing. For example most of my modules are 5 credits with the exception of more important modules being 10 credits. I would say its the same if in NUS/NTU where if the standard average modules are 3-4 credits while the more important ones are 6-8 credits. they bear the same weigthing on your GPA either way as the ratios are both 1:2. Each university have different grading systems. I personally feel that the importance of the quality of education provided by the university far outweighs the grading system, why I say this is because I hold the belief that if an institution is able to provide good education, surely would their students do well.
(Disclaimer - I am not a NTU/NUS student and I dont claim to have knowledge of how their system works. If there are any NTU/NUS students what would like to comment, please do)

It's a private uni for sure :))) RMIT is from Aussie. I don't know RMIT exist in Singapore. I'm a student in RMIT Vietnam, this video suddenly pop up as recommendation (probably because I search about RMIT a lot lol). I absolutely agree with the girl in RMIT. It is a b****. Personally, I was never academically inclined. Yet I was encouraged (borderline forced) to complete uni by my pleb family members. Eventually, I graduated with a 3.8GPA from a pvt U in hopes of being "normal". Throughout army/uni I dabbled in options/futures/daytrading. After graduation in 2017, I've never once used my 1st class honours. Yet I still make an average of 100k annually over the last 5 years, from anywhere in the world I choose to be from the comfort of my laptop.
Watching videos like this really reminds me that the (study away youth > work away adulthood > retire and wait to die) model of life in Singapore is a terrifyingly mundane/purposeless way to waste a lifetime being painfully ordinary. I genuinely feel bad for the Singaporeans who sacrifice their individuality in the name of conformity. Nevertheless, I guess the cogs are necessary to keep the clock running.

The grading system is problematic and arguably unfair in SMU because your grades in the first 2 years contribute disproportionately more to your cumulative GPA than the later years. This disadvantages first-generation uni students in a new course who have to adapt more than others, giving them less opportunities to catch up in later years. Furthermore all the courses are of similar difficulty throughout the 4 years so it doesn't make sense to accord more weight to subjects in the first 2 years.

a little more about aussie unis (I studied in aussie):
There are 2 different scoring system GPA and WAM.
It's quite bad for aussie unis grads from SIM if ppl still focus on GPA which is, let's be honest, a crap system. This means someone who got 79 for a grade is on the same level as someone who scored a 70, which is both Distinction which means 3 point grade over 4. Someone who scored 95 is the same bandwidth as someone who scored 81.
In Aussie, people are more focused on WAM (Weighted Average Marks) which is over 100. (basically all grades add up and divide to 100 base). so First class honours would be 80+ (?), second class 70+ etc (?). This is wayyy more accurate.
Unfortunately for aussie private grads in SG, people are more focused on GPA instead.
I remember my 1st job 10 years ago. Local Uni 1st class get $400 more, 2nd class $300, pass is $100, private .....
private gets 500 more than local first class now bro

unis that have strict/tough admission requirements, with full time degree programs which take about 3-4 years to complete vs unis with almost no admission requirements (except the capability to pay), can complete in 2-3 years on part time basis.

the mindset that we have when we apply for universities, which is roughly, "which university best serves my interest (employment, grading system, cca)" is a very misleading/distracting way to objectively try and understand and rationalise the difference between perception of the unis, especially with regards to employment
the correct starting point for this should instead be "what is the point/objective of employers discerning between unis". pretty obvious right? why would i be willing to pay a higher price for hai di lao than shi li fang? why would i feel a bit more confident seeing a company's FS is audited by deloitte and not by tan ah kow limited?
then the next thing to realise is: imperfect information is a part of every fucking system, not just this one. this has to be built into your decision-making process.

if statistically i might assert that NUS graduates are more "capable" than say, SUSS graduates (like i literally define capability, someone does some study and we draw out a regression line with some error and some correlation coefficient), obviously me, as a HR officer, will realise that i take risks if i decide to give SUSS graduates less chances, or spend 15 seconds reading their resume while i spend 25 seconds on an NUS resume. because not every NUS graduate is more capable than every SUSS graduate (i.e. there is error in the study, there is certainty only for some p-value, the correlation coefficient not 1.00/-1.00 bla bla)

this is a bit course-ist, but the way the NTU linguistics girl speaks really says it all about how arts students are so heavily lacking in ability looking at large, overall complex systems, especially in a numeric/statistical way. the difference between courses of the same uni is far more vast than the difference between unis of the same course
