I followed this recipe to the letter and it turned out AMAZING! I added a little sugar to round out the acidity during the simmering and fresh basil at the end. Definitely my new favorite.
I was going to suggest the sugar addition when I saw your comment. I always add a dollop of butter to my tomato soup for a nice buttery creaminess. Oh, boy‼️ I will try your basil suggestion as well the next time I make some soup!❤❤❤
Best home-made tomato soup I ever tasted was by a woman who lived on a farm outside Huron SD in 1972. She had a large tomato garden right outside her home. Her soup was so good that I still dream about it. Thumb's UP.
I made this, I dont like tomato soup but I had tomatoes coming out of my ears and needed to use them. This recipe is so good it made me like tomato soup. The only thing I did differently was leave out the carrots because I was out and cooked the tomato paste with the onions and celery. So good and smells amazing!
@@NicePersonNumberSeven The flavour and intensity of the garlic gets mellow, smooth and smokey when you roast them. It seems like a lot, but is yummy as hell
I just finished making this for my mother in law and it’s delicious. I followed the recipe exactly and it looks just like yours. Thank you so much for the recipe. This is the first time I’ve made something for my mother in law and I’m proud of the outcome!
Guys, I highly recommend this recipe. I made this and saved some in the freezer -3 months later it still has great flavor. Can't wait till it cools down to roast tomatoes and garlic again.
I've made this recipe about 15 times, my soup-hating girlfriend loves it and I just love how much flavor it packs, but I've recently started adding small potent chillies and I'd absolutely recommend trying it
I'm glad to have found a tomato soup that doesn't use sugar, or worse, ketchup. Definitely going to try this when it's not 90°F outside. Thank you for sharing.
Oh my!. In a blistering hot summer's day in my area, I purchased some locally grown beautiful tomatoes & made this soup. I can't stop stealing teaspoons of it to taste it again & again, while it cools down, before I put it in my freezer. I followed the recipe to a T, except that I doubled it. It is so delicious & a cut above any normal tomato soup. Do be sure to get the fresh Thyme for it & some organic Russian garlic. Heavenly is the word that comes to mind. This one is a keeper. thank you Donal.
@@francismcdonnell753 Have you never had a grilled cheese sandwich? If not - it's so easy and delicious - spread butter onto two pieces of bread - I recommend slicing a baguette / long French bread in half but you can use regular sliced bread, put the buttered side of one piece of bread onto a fry pan on low heat/flame, cover the top of the bread with cheese slices ( I like gouda, you can use your favorite cheese ), put the unbuttered side of the other piece of bread on top of the cheese so that the buttered side is up, let it grill for a few minutes, when the bottom piece of bread starts turning golden brown, turn it over and let the other side grill until golden brown. The cheese in the center should be pretty much melted. It helps if you cover the pan with a lid while grilling. Try it!
Ok- We had a cold day and I made this recipe after visiting the farmers market. Tips- I lined my sheet tray with tinfoil before roasting tomatoes. Some roasted garlic cloves are firmer the others and I just left em whole and the blender did the rest- I tossed a No Chicken boullion cube in for more savory since we don’t eat meat. Skipped the olive oil drizzle an topped with fresh basil - and GoVeggie Parm. 😘 da Bomb! Grilled bread for dipping and an awesome red. Best Sunday this year.
Tried, removed seeds pulp and skin from tomatoes, and it's a decent soup. No olive oil or sprig of thyme on top, used a quarter cup of heavy cream instead, really made a more luxurious flavor for me
Yep. I learned that way of cooking garlic a while ago. It's interesting how the natural casing roasts it to perfection, and its soooo easy to do and so healthy to eat on its own or spread on toasted french bread wow!

Shelia French home Brown are the best! If you have a bumper crop try slicing, dehydrating and grinding I to tomato powder for soups, stews, dips and more. Fantastic!
First, I don't have any fresh herbs or dried Rosemary. All I used for spices besides the 2 garlic heads, was about 1/2 teaspoon each of kosher salt, pepper & parsley plus a pinch of dried thyme. My friend gave me about 2.5 lbs of regular tomatoes from her garden. I used 2 carrots, 2 stalks of celery, 1 big Vidalia onion & one 16oz can of low sodium chicken broth. AMAZING & it yielded about 4 bowls. I will definitely make this again and double it.
You might want to add the tomatoe puree while you're caramelizing the onions and carrots to cook of the bitterness that is part of 'uncooked' tomatoe paste. Beside that: great recipe!
Joseph Campese That's not the point. You're not sterilizing the tomatoe puree, you're getting rid of it's inherent and 'natural' tanginess. By caramelizing the paste, you sweeten it up a bit.

If you grow your own tomatoes add a section of stem slightly crushed with the onions and carrots etc. This will make the soup more zingy and intensify the tomato flavor instead of tomato puree. Take the stem out and throw it away before blitzing it up like you would a bouquet garni or bay leaf. Give it a go! What a superb recipe. THANKS

Tomato soup is one of my most favდurite soups.. this looks really beautiful and so yummy! I usually roast vegetables, as well, but for tomato soup, I make it like my mom made it, which I think is unusual.. . She used to juice the whole raw tomatoes and put that juice and puree in a pot, and then she made a flour/water mixture (she called it an 'einmache'), which she added to the soup to make it thicker. . She would bring it to the 1st boil for about a minute and then it was finished. Lastly she seasoned it with salt and pepper, and then topped the soup off with chopped parsley and chives/green onions. As the Mom, I cook for a family of 6 Thus, many taste buds to satisfy to hit the right spots. It doesn't happen often that all 6 of us make the same satisfying sounds of delight. This recipe achieved that: grunts of delight! Thank you
Betsy Ross Made many Italian recipes and French recipes they just suggest to lightly pan fry the tomato paste (thick stuff) because it's very acidic. Cooking it takes the edge of for sauces and pasta sauces etc.
Betsy Ross as Evan Ward said sorry. Just a little touch of heat makes quite a difference before all the liquid ingredients go into any recipe. 1 min at medium high to medium approximately.
I tried this soup completely according to the recipe. It has a strong tomato flavor, but lacked fullness in flavor. It is also a little difficult to smooth such a soup with a stick mixer. For vegans, it's probably good, but for those who just want a good tomato soup, I suppose it will be better with some cream or other milk product in more than 30% fat. I would also suggest replacing the tomatoes with red / bell pepper, or a mixture. Similar soup with bell pepper has more defined flavor. I will give the recipe a cube between 4 and 5.
@@christoohunders5316 Totally agree. But many people confuse a lot of work with difficult these days. These recipes are so easy; they just need some patience. And you'll be rewarded with a taste second to none. I see too many recipes where everything is just thrown in a pot, not taking care to develop the individual flavour profiles.
Great recipe made it today with my daughter came out tasty! Took about two hours only one issue we were getting a lot of tomato skin in final product. Blended it another two minutes a little better. GOOD STUFF!!

Ya I think you're right Jeff. Anytime I'm using a blender in a recipe, there's no point in making sure everything is chopped perfectly. If you're going to blend everything up, it doesn't really matter. It actually becomes a nice time saver that way!

This is my first time making this soup, but my SIL has made it a few times. It is so good!! Note: 900g is approximately 2lbs of tomatoes; 180C is 350F; 1 liter approximately 4 cups. (smile)
Tomato, garlic, olive oil - nothing can go wrong 😎
Chicken stock ?!?
This is the best tomato soup I ever tried... I added roasted asparagus too. So good! Thanks for the recipe.
Now that sounds interesting, did you blitz them or put them in whole?
Where can I get the pan you used to make your soup. I like that. I can see that being my favorite.
Hi Donal, hope u n ur family doing well; love ur simple one pot recipes💕, n love watching ur videos; plz keep coming up with more quick & easy recipes to help us in our busy lives, lots of love & best wishes 👍❤😉
I need a video on how to clean the pan after.
@@annah.72 is that safe? Boiling dish soap water in an oven? Won't there be residue of the soap stays in the oven and how about fumes?
@@annah.72 Thank you for that Dalriada. :)
As the Mom, I cook for a family of 6
Thus, many taste buds to satisfy to hit the right spots. It doesn't happen often that all 6 of us make the same satisfying sounds of delight.
This recipe achieved that: grunts of delight!
Thank you
Could have pan fried the tomato paste off a little just to lower its astringent flavour a little. Otherwise not bad!
Neurosis - Did you make this? How long to pan fry the tomato paste would you recommend?
30 secs to 1 min just before the liquid goes in.
Neurosis - Thank you 😊✨
I tried this soup completely according to the recipe.
A little splash of heavy cream is great in tomato soup
I was thinking creme fraiche
So nice to see someone using a classic mirepoix again; it is what adds that "wow" and brings out the flavour of the other components.
Mirepoix ratatouille is also amazing, but it requires separate cooking of all ingredients, a lotta work !
Looks wonderful! Going to have to try stirring my soup with a wooden salad fork!
Great recipe made it today with my daughter came out tasty! Took about two hours only one issue we were getting a lot of tomato skin in final product. Blended it another two minutes a little better. GOOD STUFF!!
Me so early!! I am so excited for good tomato soup.. I've been craving. And this looks AMAZING. I think I would top it with a drizzle of crème fraiche and serve it with grilled cheese. Yum!! 😊😊
I almost licked my screen.
my work here is done!
made my day
Delicious? ❤
Another reason for smell-a-vision.
@@donalskehan I'm literally salivating here! Just made a pretty good tomato soup using a simpler recipe but I am gonna try yours next!
Great soup recipe... innovative. Way to Go....Thank you so much for sharing.
question...You didn't take the skin from the tomatoes. Do they just dissolve when whisking?
Gerry A yes, the basically get blitzed when you blend it
Yesssssss, roasted tomatoes make the BEST soup
how did 20ish pieces of tomato (01:16) turned into 10ish pieces of tomato(01:29) before and after the oven :/
Magic of video- I think I may have taken some away when they cooled from the oven! :)
He sounds Irish so it must have been leprechauns 😁
@@donalskehan I saw 5 fewer, a perfect snack Hmm (LOL) 😉❤️.
I do something simpler, but not from fresh ingredients, this is definitely something to try.
Great video! I noticed that the mirepoix wasn't 3 same shapes. Why? Everything was blender at the end, just relax clopping? lol Thanks for the great work
they should technically be uniform but I had cut them up for another recipe I was making so I used them here! :)
Ya I think you're right Jeff. Anytime I'm using a blender in a recipe, there's no point in making sure everything is chopped perfectly. If you're going to blend everything up, it doesn't really matter. It actually becomes a nice time saver that way!
I'm on a mission of making the best tomato soup ever, even if it takes all the tomatoes from the garden 🤩This looks yummy
