    I much prefer your third granny square. This is my preferred method. My only difference is instead of doing the half double in the corner before joining I do a double crochet. It makes for less bulk, puts the hook exactly where you want it but without bulk and gives 2 spaces just like the other 3 corners. It makes the corner space identical but that is what works for me.☺️🧶

    • @totally_fierce
      @totally_fierce  4 месяца назад +1

      Same here, the third option is my favorite. And I'll definitely try your suggestion with the double crochet instead of the hdc to close the round. Thank you so much for your input ❤️☺️

    Subscriber #512 here❣️ Thanks for showing everyone the things that have always bothered me about magic ring, chain 3-4 ring, chain 3 vs extended single/double stitch and the slip stitch. I hate the slip stitch in a granny square ❣️Bless your ❤️🙏🏼 BRAVO 👏🏼

    Taking this one stage further:
    When needing to change colours, “end” each round (as you have shown), then, in a completely new part of the square, begin doing a STANDING stitch with the new colour.
    This, (along with the alternatives you have shown us here), have been game changing for me!

    • @totally_fierce
      @totally_fierce  4 месяца назад

      That's exactly how I do my color changes except that I start directly from where I ended the round. I made a video about it that will be published in just a few hours 🎉
      But I agree, it really is a game changer and looks so much better

    That has got to be one of the most awkward magic ring i have ever seen. If you found it hard, then just let me tell you are actually makign it harder than it has to be.

    • @totally_fierce
      @totally_fierce  4 месяца назад +2

      Agreed 🙈🤣 that's why I said that this is probably not the most elegant way of making a magic ring. But it works for me. To each their own way, right?
      I tried dozens of magic ring tutorials that all claim to be "the best" or "the easiest". But only this one really worked for me.
      And who knows? One day, I might see a different, less awkward way and can adapt it to my future crochet method 🤔

    NO MORE CHAIN THREE! NO MORE CHAIN THREE! NO MORE CHAIN THREE!
    The magic ring. Then 'fake' double crochet to start the round. Closing the round with a half double crochet. The finishing touch: the sew in finish. My sorry looking Granny Squares are a thing of the past. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

    I thought the idea of a magic ring was to have two strands that you crochet around/into. Less bulky, still strong.
    At about 20:07, I definitely don't like the chain 3 "Dennis Lipstitch"* version, and have always tried various and new things to avoid ugliness. Once Upon A Time, I did not mind going front to back and turning my squares because it offered texture that I didn't know how to do yet, and chaining three and turning the work did change the look of a flat chain face. Whenever there was an end to sew in or a color change, I could change the look of that chain 3 with some creative needlepointing to mimic a more proper dc.
    * with your accent, I heard " 'den' a slipstitch" as "Dennis Lipstitch". I don't know if there are any Dennis Lipstitches in the world, and my apologies to him/them, but, that will always be the name for that ugly technique. It's forever in my mind now, as, many things that come with a laugh, do stay.

    • @totally_fierce
      @totally_fierce  4 месяца назад +2

      🤣🤣 you crack me up! To Dennis Lipstitch: Whoever and wherever you are, I might use your name as a new persona or as my drag name lol 🤣🤣
      But you are right, as crocheters we are always curious how things look like when changing little things. And in the end it always is an individual preference. It's like a buffet: you take what you want and what you think looks good together. In terms of Dennis Lipstitch: I'm not that into him tbh, not my type, but other might still like him 🤣🙈 and that's totally fine

      @@totally_fierce I'll keep watching and see what I can do for you. I try to help anyone I can. I have tried other creators on here with the information I gave you. Nothing has ever come of it until now. Have you tried the solid square yet? I hope I wrote the instructions well enough for you to understand. Thanks again from the simple man in the States. I always did crochet in my free time but since I got sick with cancer it has helped me more then with just passing time. After the rounds of chemo I lost the feeling in my hands and feet called neuropathy. I was in able to write or even sign my name. I picked a hook up and thru intense concentration I started to crochet. It looked bad. I stayed with it and now I am almost back to normal. I cannot look away I always have to focus. I'm better now. Doing immuno-therapy and the Dr says I'm going into remission. I have a cancer that has a 10% survival rate.

    There is another way to make a fake double crochet. Pull up a loop the same height as a double crochet. Then twist the hook around that loop clockwise once. Make sure you hold on to the at twisted loop with a finger so it doesn’t untwist and work it as you would a normal double crochet. I think you will find it looks more like a DC and you have more control over the height. You will still have to two loops at the top to work the HDC into at the last corner. ❤

    Beginner here. Why can't you just do a double crochet to start each round instead of doing the fake double crochets? Thanks!

    • @totally_fierce
      @totally_fierce  4 месяца назад +2

      Hi, thank you for your question. Each crochet stitch has a different height. The double crochet stitch, which is mainly used for granny squares, is quite high.
      So when you start a round, the loop is at the bottom, and you have to find a way to go up to continue with double crochets.
      To create that height, you can either chain 3, which has about the same height as a double crochet, or you make the fake double crochet / stacked single crochet.
      For beginners the chain 3 is easier but always looks a bit off compared to the following regular double crochets. The fake double crochet is basically 2 single crochets on top of each other and looks more like a regular double crochet in your work.
      I hope this helps? 🙏

    I do the hdc join. If I use starting chains I skip them and join to the first real dc doing it this way makes the slip stitch (if you use one ) sit on top of the chains making them look more like an actual dc
