Ive used regular deodorant for most of my life and it turned my pits dark and it caused swollen clogged pores which was painful at times. Switching to non aluminum has cleared these issues for me. I still sweat with the non aluminum but i dont stink which is what i am looking for. Sweating is natural. This has been my experience. Everyone is different.
I had the same problem. Swollen and painfully clogged pores! I will never ever go back to using aluminum based deodorants again. Also I don't stink either. Sweating is a natural function.
I’ve used anti-perspirant my whole life and I’ve never had an issue like this. I see a lot of comments saying that they had issues with it but also a lot of comments saying that they don’t. Could it be a sensitivity to it that you might have that other people don’t? I think sometimes we try to have a one size fits all solution, but people are different.
Honestly, at this point I’m just confused and don’t know who to believe anymore because some doctors and dermatologists say aluminum is fine and others say it’s horrible for you and I’ve read articles for both and I don’t know who to believe anymore
you can test a part of it out on yourself, too. if you feel your lymph nodes and skin are fine, it might be fine for you... i know i literally felt that it was wrong for me. a week after coming off of aluminium i had a whole different feeling in my armpit area. if you don't notice any change, you're probably someone who does fine on aluminium.
@@bomsnose that’s not my problem; my problem is I’ve had several doctors and read studies that say aluminum can build up in your body and is attributed to Alzheimer’s. But I’ve also read that it doesn’t so I don’t know
I don’t buy into the “aluminum is bad for u” marketing, but aluminum antiperspirants genuinely irritate my skin, are impossible to wash off unless I shave it off, and leave me with painful, clogged sweat glands. So to that end, I’m happy there’s a market of aluminum-free options.
Same. I used to use the standard women’s aluminum deodorants exclusively, but then I developed a rash that only went away when I switched products. To be honest, I still wish I could use aluminum-containing deodorants. I just don’t like having my freedom to choose between products taken away from me.
How can you say all of that and go on to say you dont buy into it ? Aluminum DOES clog people's pores, that is why they put it in. So yes, aluminum is bad for you. Science may not back up that sweating out toxins improves your health but I dont need a scientist to have common sense . Common sense says your body does things a certain way because it NEEDS to!
Elle Mathews She pretty much just said alumina do you odorant clogs your pores to stop it from sweating that doesn’t sound right. I mean it’s no different than if you were to use a cleanser or some sort of skin care thing on your face and it clogs your pores you don’t want that. It’s like people saying they use a foundation for their face they clog their pores no skin care or deodorant do you want clocking anywhere on your face or your body. Who want any product that you use on your skin who wants to use skin care or deodorant or foundation who wants to use want the clog your pores. No one does all my gosh this foundation or the skin care product quite my pores and it’s good for my skin like no. Anything to clog the pores is bad. We may not like the smell we may not like sweating but anything it clogs it stops it from happening that’s not a good sign. I have never heard anyone say that natural deodorant is bad for you and that the aluminum kind is better for you because it clogs your pores to stop it from sweating like you want to sweat that’s a normal good thing. If you don’t normally sweat a lot or sweat much that’s fine but if you’re someone who sweats a lot and use a deodorant the clogs your pores and stopped you from sweating I would find that a little bit odd.
Elle Mathews so she says that’s good you want a deodorant has aluminum and clog your pores. Are use a natural deodorant it’s not for everybody but I don’t wanna use a deodorant that’s clogging my pores
I used antiperspirants all throughout my childhood and suffered from large painful cysts, itchy rashes, and really dark hyperpigmentation that was very unattractive. All of that stopped once I started using natural deodorants that didn't include aluminum. & TBH I barely even need to wear deodorant anymore. Everybody's body is just different.
Same, I used "clinical strength" antipersperant, got marble- sized painful cysts in my pits, and started stinking no matter how often I applied. For 8 years I made my own deodorant, and it helped me and now I use Native and don't stink, don't hurt, and don't itch.
I used spray on deodorant as a kid and broke out in bad rashes that were itchy. I used white deodorant and it stained my clothes yellow in the pits. I used the gel and it globbed and dripped down all in my clothes. Now I am in between Native for winter and sauve roll on for thay extra boost in the summer and doing fine.
I don't like greenwashing, but my doctor found a direct link between swollen lymph nodes under my arm related to aluminum in the brand name deodorant I was using. That was a wakeup call.
I’ve heard this as well. I can only use “natural” deodorants as I’m allergic to aluminum. Before natural deodorants became more mainstream, my armpits were literally covered in red bumps, hives, rashes, etc. since I started wearing deodorant when I hit puberty. I tried natural deodorant last year for the first time when I was 21 and I’m just grateful I don’t get rashes anymore. I always thought it was just something I kind of had to live with
Good point. Lush Cosmetics has deodorants that they sell as bars, like soap, so it can definitely be done. Obv being Lush it's mostly essential oils, but worked quite well for years for me personally.
Absolutely this. Natural deodorants never work for me but I keep being tempted by a new one that just came out because you pay for an applicator container and then you just buy low-waste refills for it. It's a great idea. I want to be able to use products that actually get the job done without having to deal with so much plastic.
My husband uses the Mitchum unscented roll on and it has benzoyl peroxide in it and it works great for him. But the gel doesn't have that ingredient in it 🤷
I love native! No matter what scent I use from their brand, they always held up so well all day and I never get odor from sweating. I know aluminum can be beneficial to people who sweat way more than the average person but I've also sweat a pretty decent amount and I find it normal although I do end up showering when I get home. I feel like as long as I don't stink and don't hug anyone when I'm sweaty then I can manage (or just wipe some of the sweat off in the restroom if i can).
Aluminum is not dangerous. The aluminum used in traditional deodorants and sprays is binded to chlorine, which is what makes it dangerous and gives you side effects. Technically your chlorine deodorant was also natural.
I'm so glad I found you and stopped feeling guilty about wearing "normal" deodorant. Its really nice as a pregnant lady, who's due in July, to not be stinky when theres so many other uncomfortable things also happening with my body. Thanks for sharing the truth, Dr. Dray!
Haylee Baird-Lira I like the natural deodorant I normally use works a treat.. but during pregnancy it simply doesn’t work and I’m with you in not being stinky and I go back to normal deodorant during my pregnancies!!
Kriana Phaly have you tried Kopari? I have gone through so many natural and not deodorants and my skins really sensitive but this has been the best for me. No irritation, no staining clothes!
Yea, well this video is just full of bull shit. Sweating is essential for your body to get rid of toxins. Saying otherwise is just perpetuating the problem. Im pregnant and due in 14 days, and i have only used natural deodorant during my pregnancy and didnt smell, and i feel comfortable
Honestly, I kind of really enjoy the tough love kind of Dr Dray we are getting here haha. I hope you're hanging in there, and thank you so so much for sticking around with us during these times despite your own trials. Thank you.
I hate that people would rather listen to a bunch of unqualified people making claims about aluminum containing products leading to breast cancer over peer reviewed scientific studies. It doesn’t cause breast cancer
I want shirts with your quotes on them, Doctor! Today’s one that made me almost spit out my coffee was “if someone tell you their armpits are detoxing, just walk away”. Dr. Dray, you make me smile!
Love your channel! So informative ❤️ I’m an OBGYN and I don’t really remember a whole lot about skin from medical school and my very short derm rotation. I’ve cut down on the number of products I use everyday because of the advice you’ve given and my skin has never looked better. Thanks!
I'm a final-year medical student and I barely know anything about skin either lol. I think we just learn about the serious stuff in med school. We barely even spend any time on rosacea, let alone caring for healthy skin.
I have tried 4 different “natural” deodorants over the last few months and I have never been so funky. Thank God I work from home. I can’t take it anymore I’m switching back
@@semantick I had actually tried detoxing with the clay masks months ago and natural deodorants still didn’t work for me. But my $1.50 Suave Tropical Paradise does the job every time
Suddenly, out of nowhere about two years ago, I developed an allergy to deodorant. Skin rash that is so itchy and raw that was a nightmare, switched brands a bunch of times to no avail. Nothing worked. Then I tried an aluminum-free deodorant and no problems whatsoever. So while aluminum might be fine for most, I just cannot use it anymore 😢
@@lunarose2139 it’s the strangest thing, right?!? I was like what the hell is going on?!? I’ve used the same brand FOREVER! Then I just couldn’t anymore. What a nightmare that itch is to deal with!!
One thing that definitely needs to be studied is how as women our hormones fluctuate and I wonder if that plays a factor in how something works then doesn’t for women
@@indicajane4721 I couldn’t agree more! This started only about a year after I had been diagnosed as entering peri-menopause and I had stopped producing progesterone naturally. I was put on hormone replacement for a time and I always thought there might be a connection to my rollercoaster of hormones during that time! I’ve long been off the progesterone and I’m further along in menopause but this deodorant allergy is still a persistent issue for me. So I think you might be onto something! The only thing I can use is Aluminum free, anything else causes a severe itch and angry rash. 😩
i love how the comments are split. 😅 but i am on team native. i like the plastic-free cases they have, the scents are great, and i have no funky issues. i didnt have any funky issues to begin with, but im less sweaty when i use them. so it's def to each their own!
THANK YOU. I tried making the “switch.” & let me tell you. Worst mistake ever. After 2 weeks, my armpits were RED. INFLAMED . & then turned BLACK 2 weeks later. They hurt so bad. I could barely function. Didn’t realize how much my arms swing when doing normal everyday tasks until I was hurting! For those wondering, I tried Kopari. Unscented formula too!
I was listening to an interview with the ceo of Schmidt’s and she was like “oh when people switch over to natural deodorant you’ll experience a bad smell or irritation and it’s totally normal” uhh no that means your product doesn’t work
Ya, at a fair, i was told that people who switch to "natural" will smell bad during a transitional period of detox and getting used to it for a couple weeks. Then after continued use our bodies will adjust and itll work. I couldnt go 2 weeks of stink cuz well i am around other people lol...but i know someone who only uses non-aluminum or nothing for over a year and they still smell all the time!
No actually, it's true. At least for many people. I've been using natural deodorants for years now and don't have any problems anymore (as remember having when I first started). My mum was even able to ditch deodorants altogether after a short adjustment period. She said it was really bad the first few days - but now she can go without without producing bad odors.
I switched over to natural deodorant about 3 years ago, for the first couple weeks I stunk, I also had a rash. Now all I use is natural deodorant, and I can switch between any natural deodorant brand and I don’t have any reactions or smell anymore, I also don’t get as bad of shaving irritation.
It worked for me as far as odor went but the irritation was so painful I couldn't handle it. They have a sensitive skin formula that caused no irritation, but it just didn't work for odor, lol!
Same happened to me. I honestly thought I was bitten by a tick when I woke up to a circular rash under my arm. I scheduled a visit with my doctor and by the time I got there, I had the same rash under both armpits! I had a reaction to the baking soda in my Native deodorant 😩
Yeah same, you can find or even make deo without bailing sida, but it's in soooo many brands. I'm from the UK and use Uovo deo, it has no baking soda and works all reet for me 👍
Same here. I tried countless brands, even those with low/no baking soda formulated for sensitive skin, and eventually I'd break out in a rash again. I finally went back to using regular antiperspirant and haven't had any issues outside of occasional eczema flare ups.
I had to switch to aluminum free (even fragrance free deodorant with aluminum) options and I would get huge painful lumps under my underarms :( It didn't matter whether it was gel, spray on, etc you name it. As soon as I switched I haven't had any of those problems, and I don't stink at all. The deodorant I use right now is Crystal 24 hr Mineral Deodorant Roll-On and it works perfect for me. I guess it just varies from person to person!
I love my native because my armpits don’t get hyperpigmentation. I always had cyst with regular deodorant/anti-perspirant. I used make my own deodorant and was fine but I need more lasting power so native works for me.
I switched from scented antiperspirants to unscented and started applying at night as you suggested in another video. First time in my LIFE that I’m not sweaty and stinky! Thanks Dr. Dray. My skin has improved so much since I started following your advice.
I procrastinate my chem homework watching her videos and I love that she talked about pH which is the unit I was supposed to be reviewing. Dr. Dray comes in clutch for everything lol
Speaking personally, when I stopped using antiperspirants I stopped getting hyperhydrosis. It was counter intuitive. I do not believe aluminium is bad and I know you are totally right about bicarbonate of soda. I find the wasteful and horrible smelling mass produced stuff in crappy plastic packing really annoying - that's driving my choises. I have heard good things about some acid toners though.
I completely agree. I kept going higher and higher percentage of aluminum in my deodorant to combat hyperhidrosis. One day I started worrying more about alzheimers because that shit is scary as hell to me. I started using aluminum free and found my sweating actually decreased greatly. After a while I switched to lume natural and found it eliminates odors better than any prescription strength dermatologist stuff. The only reason I want to switch back is to save money lol.
I know I am late on this one, but acid toners work very well! I use a benzoyl peroxide wash and The Ordinary makes a glycolic acid toner that works really well for an amazing price! Buy a little spray bottle to pour the toner in and spray it! Also helps with ingrown hairs! But then menopause 😂 I am back to aluminum deodorant because I smell like a teenager hitting puberty again! And the Alzheimer’s thing has been disproven on many levels, don’t let people fear monger you!
I tried to use Schmidt's "natural" deodorant, which contains essential oils. Within days I developed medium-sized lumps in my armpits, which had never happened before. I switched to a non-natural deodorant and have had no issues since.
I only use a “natural” deodorant because I’ve tried every sensitive deodorant you can think of and it all gave me a rash. Finally I found the one deodorant that works and doesn’t give me a rash. I don’t think it has baking soda or essential oils in it.
@@emmigration really? Which line is it? I bought their packet and haven’t finished them, so I haven’t been on their site in a while. They work fine on me, but I like having the option to change as I have a preventative approach with my skincare
"The thing that makes me want to just throw up my hands and lick stamps for a living" - Dr Dray on Natural Deodorants (best quote of 2020 😂) 1) Natural means nothing 2) Do not put Baking Soda on your skin 3) Do no put essential oils on your skin 4) If somebody tells you their armpits are detoxing...just walk away, just walk away...
@@ellemathews9840 girl hush she's a dermatologist she studied skin for over a decade I think she knows more about it than you do, you're in all these comments looking crazy
honestly tho i used other deodorants (non natural) and they never kept me from not smelling like they last like an hour max and as soon as i started using native it actually lasted so much longer for me and didn’t irritate my skin
Many aluminum based deodorants have a warning within the ingredients label. Usually something like "Ask a doctor before use if you have kidney disease". If aluminum isn't harmful, why such a warning? If it isnt harmful, logically it should not matter. right?
Can’t believe I’m 26& just now learning how to use deodorant 😹 Would the PH of shampoo affect the scalp? Could a high PH on the scalp cause hair loss? Thank you for helping us, I know I’m the millionth person to say it but you’ve saved my skin! 💕 take care
Yup. I tried every single “sensitive skin” conventional deodorant/unscented antipersperant out there trying to in something that didn’t aggravate my pits. After a doctor told me there was nothing I could do to treat or prevent nonstop boils besides warm hot compresses, I switched to “natural” deodorant. It took me years to find something that worked for the smell and didn’t have too much baking soda to irritate my skin, but I have not had a single boil since.
Some natural deodorants are wonderful and some are bogus. Just like with anything in life, I don't think antagonizing one side and going all the way to the other side is healthy. Just my experience.
Clever people come together on the clever comment. We always thought that science will never be manipulative but everything serves industry nowadays so im never gonna let my pores to clog. Preventing the glands from doing their work is hella scary
I agree but I also think that thinking that antiperspirants are completely safe is wrong, I mean sure if you have a sweat issue go for it, but for long term use there aren’t any studies even looking at that. And look at the story of asbestos for example, it was used for so long for insulation in homes, and now it has been shown to have a direct link to cancer! So there are many things that have not been intensively studied or even understood, so unless it’s absolutely needed it’s best to limit the use. Even Acetaminophen for example, it’s so commonly to take yet its odd that scientists still do not know the mechanism of action! So they don’t know where it acts in our bodies and many ppl take it so casually!
Aluminum darkens your armpits. Since I’ve switched to natural deodorant, my underarms have lightened up tremendously, and I no long have yellow stains in my white shirts. If natural deodorant isn’t your thing, try glycolic acid by the ordinary. It works great as a deodorant, and is perfect for lightening your armpits.
Tbh I don’t get why people care about dark armpits. Like a lot of people ask about that. I have never looked at someone and thought about the shade of their armpits
I use a "natural" deodorant and love it. It is the only one that controls my odor, doesn't feel heavy and gross and doesn't stain my clothes as it happened to me with all the aluminum deodorants that I have tried
@@_serenity3298 I use a deodorant too, try out wolfthorn from oldspice, it smells really fruity (you can often find men complaining that it smells too feminine LOL) so its perfect for women. I decided to try old spice because my boyfriend uses that brand and he always smells clean. I use the deodorant, not the antitranspirant, and it's perfect for me, I literally always smell clean now.
i don’t think you listened to the video very clearly. Aluminium is natural. Sucks that you’re allergic to it but I could make a “natural” deodorant with Aluminium.
I just started using Lumē. I don’t care what that stuff has in it, I won’t stop using it! I’ve had no irritation and I don’t stink… like, at all! I’m using the fragrance free version & love it.
Honestly, I still stink using it! 😭 I think I’m just too smelly for Lume. I was so excited about it too for using it in my private parts lol but I think my stink is just too strong 💪 😞
@Aletheia Backs The creator of Lumē says to “prep” your clothes too. Lumē is water based where other deodorants/antiperspirants (natural or not) are wax or oil based. They “melt” into your clothes and do not wash out easily & can maintain previously trapped odors that will rear their ugly heads when you sweat… regardless of what deodorant you’re wearing. So to prep your clothes, you can use Nature’s Miracle (an enzyme spray made to clean animal stains & odors) or use Persil as a laundry detergent. With the spray, you can spray the under arms of your clothes when you take them off (I spray my undies, too) and just toss it in the laundry. You don’t have to wash them right away, the spray will not mess up your clothes.
I also love Lume!! I’ve tried Native, Schmidts, etc but Lume is the only “natural” deodorant that doesn’t irritate my skin and works! Nothing stops my sweat, even the heavy duty aluminum antiperspirants. But Lume does eliminate odor. Plus no more gross deodorant stains on my shirts
I completely agree lol. I refuse to use aluminum (unpopular opinion and don't care) and Lume as well as the Arm and Hammer , and Primal Pit Paste ones are my fav ever and I loveeeeeee them. End of story for me 😂
My skin literally peeled off. It was red, irritated, and so tender. Couldn’t wear any deodorant for weeks, had to heal first. Gosh and it hurt so much. Never will try “natural deodorant”. Never ever.
Lesly yuppp. Plus I started breaking out in my armpits. Huge cyst like demons. I tried the native sensitive deodorant and it all went away. Definitely the baking soda
I honestly had a huge difference when switching to primal pit paste. It’s a natural deodorant I’ve been using for over 3 years now and it’s helped 100% with odor. I felt like the other antiperspirants left a film I could feel and not scrub off even when showering. To each their own and I am not even like a person who falls for stuff like that but I was willing to try anything and it did help FOR SURE.
This is so reassuring! I purchased some natural deodorant because regular deodorant was failing me. I had tried so many different brands, also solids and spray ons. I loved the spray on because I didn't have that film form solid deodorant! I love how bare I feel with the natural. I have only been wearing it for 2 days so I hope this will be what I've been needing!
This is why I switched to natural deodorant! With my normal antiperspirants I literally could not get it off in the shower, and it would keep building up and I would smell awful. No matter how much I scrubbed it never came off completely. I switched to natural almost 8 months ago and it’s been amazing. I had an adjustment period, but it was well worth it! I smell great, I still sweat, and it comes off easily in the shower!
@@allyhoffmannn would recommend a wash which has salicilic acid for buildups. Once I had some buildup on my scalp from bad water(limestone deposits or something, not sure) which created massive hear loss for weeks on end and only a body wash with salicilic acid cleared it up.
Yessss like I needed to detox aka wait some days for the residue which builds up on your pits to go away... now with the naturals I don’t get that buildup and discoloration. I would literally scrub my skin crazy
I’m gonna be completely honest- I don’t wear deodorant when I don’t work. I just don’t feel like I need it, so instead of wasting money on natural deodorants which I know won’t work for me, I go deodorant-free.
I do the same. I think a lot of people don't really NEED it. Maybe they start using strong antiperspirant during puberty when their sweat glands are in overdrive and then carry on without realising that they don't sweat so much anymore. Lifestyle is also a factor.
The main reason I wanted to switch was because I really thought aluminum caused breast cancer and I didn’t want to increase my risk. I tried a natural deodorant years ago and the MUST knocked me clean out. I switched back so fast. Now I use clinical strength and it’s amazing! The aluminum doesn’t bother me! I did just buy some Bentonite clay to detox before trying Native, but maybe I’ll just stick with my aluminum lol
@@EastCoastKilo 🤣🤣🤣 I ended up trying again once I was pregnant and no longer working and having to worry about being funky around others, I got through it. I used LUME deodorant

i think it's important to remember that natural (made with plant extracts etc) isn't always better, but it's also not always worse. some deodorants that are marketed as natural are baking soda-free and work better for some people. do your research, determine what works best for you, and don't avoid all natural skincare products on the basis that the "natural" skincare community tends to use pseudoscience and essential oils. there are many responsible brands out there that don't fit that stereotype, and small amounts of essential oils aren't detrimental to everyone.
I'm honestly glad that there are more natural deodorants out there because I am highly allergic to any kind of metal. My poor armpits got so shredded up from the allergic reactions I was having from using aluminum based anti-perspirants. I understand that this doesn't apply to everyone, but I just can't wear them at all
I will never put aluminum to my armpits. That being said, I once developped an irritation from using an essential oils natural deodorant, and got irritation from using a diy with bicarbonate soda, wich I never had using conventional products. I really appreciate the aluminum-free and fragrance-free suggestion you made. Thank you for your amazing work here.
Out of curiousity -- did you read any of these references? Because I went through nine of them (the rest were redundant, about studies regarding Aluminum consumed through water, rather than antiperspirants) and they all pretty much contradict what she's claiming. I'm not sure she realized that, or if she read through them thoroughly. I compiled a review of them if anyone is curious. ((I'm a scientist, specifically in Microbiology, so I'm a bit used to reviewing scientific articles, in case you needed credentials.))
Yes! I always had that issue with regular deodorants. I actually went with the "natural" ones for a while and it stopped. But I couldn't find one that worked in hot summers so I had to switch back. I was reminded then that they will either stain your armpits or leave a lasting odor that is hard to wash out. I just started using Each & Every and it works really well. No odor or stains! :) But I do agree with the video about false marketing and propaganda around "the dangers" of aluminum.
I used aluminum antiperspirants for many years for hyperhidrosis, but the hyperhidrosis continued to get worse. I decided to give natural deodorant a try and within a month the excessive sweating has stopped. Not sure why it worked for me, but I'm grateful it did. With that said, only a couple natural deodorants work for me...many of them don't work.
Your hilarious 😂 ❤️ I used natural deodorants for years! 20 years! The past year or so I couldn’t take it anymore! I stressed so much about being smelly half way through the day. I figured the stress from feeling insecure about smell was going to harm my health more than using a conventional deodorant 😊
Girl I’m going on 8 years of natural deo I’m so done I will start to smell 20 mins after putting it on it’s insane & the deodorant flakes off everywhere it’s gross I’m done 😂
There is conflicting evidence on aluminum now a days. But why use something that MAY cause something like breast cancer. Everyones different but i experienced pain in my lymph nodes all the time...... since i stopped using it i havnt experienced that pain or tenderness even once. Just something to think about.
The only reason I switched over was because the “natural” deodorants tend to be cruelty free. I kept hearing the fear mongering comments from people about aluminum, but I never took a stance because the comments are just that, opinions from random people, not professionals. I don’t even use deodorant that often. Maybe once a year. I have no body odor but I found Piper Wai helpful to prevent sweating, that’s handy on a hot day.
I feel like I’m one of the few that haven’t had any issues with “natural” deodorants. I use little seed farm deodorant cream and keep native in my backpack in case I forget to put some of my cream on. I get compliments on my smell and have no smell after a heavy workout, whereas I had massive rashes and burning with deodorant that had any aluminum in it and always stunk after a few hours.
I use Native too and its works amazing! I used to have an issue with getting massive sweat stains and having chchachchanchchachchange my shirt 3x a day or only wear black and I use native and that's completely changed but I've also found nothing wrong with using it !
I really enjoyed my Native deodorant. There’s no antiperspirant quality.. so you still sweat, but I never noticed a smell. Can’t say for any others but Native’s deodorant worked for me at least.
Omg explains why when I tried a “natural” deodorant I had a horrible rash so stopped using it immediately & went back to my original normal deodorant. So glad I saw this.
It's probably baking soda. It made me irritated too. But they do make aluminum free and baking soda free Deodorant. I think I sweat less and smell better with no aluminum but to each their own
Studies can be bought out and paid. No independent studies have been done. Remember when Doctors used to recommend smoking/cigarettes', yeah I rather not risk it.
Research isn't free but not everything is paid by some shadowy overlord. Researchers spend much of their day writing grants, looking to fund things they care about. This isn't the big brained take you think it is.
@@JaoBaiDun this is a hard question, because I know there's some box that have been proven to help, i just think this thing is money driven and satanic
i don't like the "natural is better" marketing either, but i think aluminum vs no aluminum is just for preference. otherwise you're right we shouldn't use baking soda or essential oils on our skin. and so many natural deos avoid the use of preservatives which definitely defeats the purpose of reducing odor causing bacteria
"just cut them off" hahahah love it. Thanks for this. I will be switching back to my regular deodorant now. I was trying 'Native' because everyone tells me aluminum is harmful..
There are an equal number of analyses that disagree with Dr. Dray here too, suggesting that aluminum does everything the fearmongers claim, so we can't go based on who-said-what. What I do know is, aluminum does make the anti-perspirant extremely difficult to wash off, and when it combines with the sweat in your skin, it leads to that awful discoloration (and sometimes "crunchy" texture) in the pits of your shirts. That is a 100% irrefutable fact. A lot of people also end up with rashes, swelling, and soreness. So while it may not be detrimental to your health, overall, it does have a lot of irritating side effects. The "natural" deodorant marketers are doing just that - marketing. But how is that any different from the big pharma companies that sell anti-perspirant? Or shampoo where they tell you on the bottle to wash twice every time (even though that horrendously dries out your scalp, so buy conditioner!!!)? It's big, pro-chemical marketing, vs. small, no-chemical marketing. Both are trying to sell stuff to neatly divided groups of consumers. That is all.
I agree with the person above. I also tend to pay attention to age old eastern medical professionals before Rockefellers bought out new school western medical professionals.
I find with myself personally, that “natural” deodorants made me have an odor. I’ve tried everything from Dr.Teals, Schmidt’s, to Native and I always noticed an odor during the day that I never experienced with others such as Dove or Secret. I’m just assuming everyone is different, and just use what works best for you.
I have the same issue!! And everyone loves Schmidt's, but the buildup on my clothes was ridiculously annoying. I bought arm & hammer essentials with natural deodorizers on a whim one day and it's now my holy grail. So if you still prefer the non aluminum route, I'd recommend giving it a try.
Try LITTLE SEED FARM deodorant, its a small family business and is the only baking soda free deodorant that works for me! Its amazing and it has all 5 star reviews!
Same, it annoys the hell out of me when I'm pretty much assaulted with these stupid ads on social media promoting natural deodorants. If you desperately want to put baking soda to use then go and bake a cake and leave my pits alone. BTW, Dr Dray, you look 12 👶❤
I'm so glad you hear this because l love my aluminum antiperspirant ! None of the so called natural deodorants ever worked and l just frustrated myself so much because of the sweat, smells and stickyness. Glad l can just continue using my lovely antiperspirant
I’ve used every kind of deodorant including every type of clinical strength deodorants and Lume is the only deodorant that I’m not afraid to raise my arm up with. I was always the stinky girl and now everyone compliments how good I smell. I LOVE LUME!!!
Same it's so good! I bet even Dr. Dray would approve. Its main ingredient is mandelic acid which lowers the pH as she mentioned, and it steers well clear of baking soda. It's the only things that makes me not smell at all.
She’s wrong though, there’s many’s studies by different doctors that show how aluminum is clearly a carcinogenic neurotoxin. Shameful how she is so upset about a topic she is clearly ignorant to.
@Ryker lol, we don't have natural aluminium in our bodies so stop with this bs. Natural deodorants cost more cause it's made by smaller manufacturers that have morals. Check Ben&Anna which is very popular in less/zero-waste circles. Small companies, innovative formulas, packaging, marketing, and CSR (cleaning oceans etc). I prefer these companies than some big mogule like coty or unilever.
I like to think of myself as a critical thinker, but I definitely got sold on the "natural" marketing. I'm a student, I'm trained in critical thinking, and I bought into this with zero evidence. This video was very useful, but also it showed me how vulnerable we all are to marketing. Thank you for the science based information. I'm shopping around for a deodorant, and will look into this further. Thanks!
Yeh were vulnerable to the marketing paid for by the chemical companies more so I suspect. I use coconut oil and baking soda, I don't have BO even after a day in a boiling hot warehouse. I feel better about not putting toxic crap onto one of the most absorbent parts of my body.
Thank you, Dr. Dray, for this video (and all your videos). I've learned so much from them! Regarding this topic, I bought my first Vanicream anti-perspirant years ago & have always had a good experience with it. Recently, I've seen ads for a product called Lume. The company makes a version that is free of essential oils, baking soda, and aluminum. I'd love to hear you review this product, that the company claims is based on science. Thanks again for this helpful video.
@@sc3neboi647 right lol even water is a chemical. Its just everybody has this negative connotation on the word "chemical". Usually people mean its a bad chemical for human use
I noticed that if I forgot deodorant when i wore an antiperspirant everyday, the smell would be bad. There was a couple weeks when I transitioned to natural deodorant that I noticed a smell but not that I am used to natural deodorant, there is no bad smell and no more sweat than the rest of my body. I used Schmidt’s for a long time and recently switched to native and LOVE IT. Native deodorant hasn’t irritated anything and smells amazing. I love the charcoal one and the citrus and musk
Same.. I switched to natural and after a month or two, my pits stopped smelling so bad as well and the amount of sweat seemed to be reduced too. I like thinksport.
Same. I live in Houston and it's hot and humid and I sweat half as much after switching to no aluminum and letting my body adjust. I also smell way better. And only stink if I sweat a lot and it sits on me all day.
That's because your not suppose to use antiperspirant through the day you'll sweat it off and the deodorant helps you not smell that's why the "natural" deodorant is working for you
I used to sweat a lot and get bad odor quickly when I was using regular aluminum deo. Since switching to aluminum free I can actually go 2 days without even wearing deodorant before I start to stink! Probably because i don’t sweat excessively like I used to. I also lightened my pits with pure lime juice diluted in water. So yea, natural worked for me. I agree with the baking soda and ph tho. But many companies PH balance their natural deodorants.
I think this fails to consider that when you change deodorants, the bacteria that your underarms are hospitable to changes; when you remove aluminum deodorants from the mix (many of which have similar formulations and can be fed on by the same kinds of bacteria), you potentially change the microflora in your underarms. I used aluminum deodorants for 15 years and always felt like they made me smell/sweat more and regularly damaged my clothes; the more ‘powerful’ (clinical strength) I used, the worse it got. When I switched to natural deodorants 10 years ago I went through about a pretty sweaty month where it was a difficult adjustment, and then after that (and some experimenting with brands), it was like a switch flipped and I found that I sweat less (significantly so, as in an 80+% reduction in wetness and the longer I went some days it seems like I practically don’t sweat at all), it takes about 24 hours or more now for my underarms to smell from sweat (with aluminum deos I could smell after a few hours if I was hot). Even at times when natural deodorants don’t stop me from sweating, it doesn’t bother me because *it virtually never smells* (never any BO smell, sometimes just a plain Shea butter type smell) so I just need to let my underarms get some air and it’s fine. Natural deodorants were game changing for me, and I don’t know anyone else whose experience hasn’t mirrored mine once they stuck through that ~1month adjustment period.
I smell way less now with natural deodorant even when I’m not wearing it. Antiperspirant definitely makes you smell more and for me we’re way more irritating too.
A few years ago Native was amazing for me. It was effective and I had no issues with it whatsoever. Then, it started giving me a rash! After years of using it without issue. Rash. Every. Time. I’d stop to clear it up, and when I used it again. . .Rash! Turns out it was around the time that the founders of Native sold to Proctor & Gamble. Gggrrrrrr!
Thank you Dr. Dray! I've tried Schmidt's, Tom's and Native - they all either made me smell worse or irritated my skin! This was so so helpful and informative for someone who suffers from several skin conditions and extremely sensitive skin.
I needed to hear this. I tried three different “natural” deodorants and found them to be stinky. I always ended up using my Dove anti-perspiration deodorant and then I’m fearful maybe this is harming me but also skeptical. I love the suggestions. Thanks!
Okay but did you do the detox when you switched? A few years ago I tried switching and I stunk so bad and blamed the deodorant. Now I’m trying again didn’t know I had to detox but lucky me I have nowhere to go and for me its working. I use Natives coconut vanilla as my aunt recommended it and I still sweat as I’ve always sweat much more than most but I’m less self conscious as I don’t smell bad at all! It’s not really about the product but more about the detoxing

I must admit I am not a fan of antiperspirants because I dont like the idea of reducing the sweat. I think sweating is kinda good thing. We are not sweating for no reason. That way our body regulates its temperature and also, I believe we release our body from some sort of toxins. So I dont really understand, why stopping it. I am on natural deodorant side 👍🏻
Did it contain baking soda? I used a baking soda containing deodorant, and it literally made my underarms burn, and peel. After healing, I used the same brands baking soda's free deodorant, and it works perfectly fine for me.
I wish I had seen this before trying a “natural” deodorant. I got a terrible rash that burned and hurt so bad! I’m glad you gave some good alternatives.
I had so many painful cysts from deodorants with aluminum. Native has completely stopped that issue and for the longest time I couldn’t find anything and just went without or I exfoliated my pits and that’s it. I’m ridiculously happy with Native.
I still sweat a lot, but native’s the only thing that’s stopped my smell. I love native. And their unscented body wash. (Bc I’m sensitive to scented body washes.) I would have swollen and really tender lymph nodes in my armpits when I used aluminum antiperspirants. Native fixed that. 🤷🏻♀️
I switched to Native just to try it. I actually really do like it. I'm not one of those aluminum is bad for you people I just wanted to see if it worked. I've tried arm and hammer deodorant and that one is a joke. Native does keep me dry.
Many doctors claim that aluminum can cause breast cancer, not just internet warriors. There's a factory in my town that makes some type of aluminum product, and majority of workers develop some kind of cancer after 15 years of working. So, here, I understand that people are somewhat concious when it comes to aluminum. I don't use natural deoderant, but I use Nivea aluminum free. It works well, I'm not much of a sweater.
I think maybe the way in which you are exposed to aluminum may also have to do with it? like it might be different if you are somewhere where it is being mass produced where you might come into contact with it in ways besides applying it topically to a small area of the body and in lower concentrations. but also not sure about long-term use i guess lolol
“The thing that makes me want to throw my hands up and lick stamps for a living-“ followed by the face at 8:54 😂 Love you Dr. Dray! Your informative videos never go unappreciated!
I've been using 'natural' deodorant for a while because I noticed antiperspirants would make me itch. My favorite brands are Kiss My Face and Tom's of Maine.
Why would anyone want to stop sweating. The main issue most of the time is odor. Sweat is really good to let out. So instead of using antiperspirants or sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) focus more on slightly lowering the ph of you underarms instead of using irritating ingredients.
@@SpaceWolf96 what works for you won’t work for everyone. So just stick to what works for you then. I understand some people just sweat a lot and don’t like it. That’s totally understandable
@@SpaceWolf96 well really it’s down to personal preference. I don’t mind sweat. That’s ok. Some people mind it because it can be excessive or just bothers them. That’s ok too.
I fell for the “natural” advertising a while ago and let me tell you: I’ve been using regular antiperspirant for years and it was a rather harsh one since it contains a lot of fragrance. Anyway, obviously it had aluminum in it, so I switched to a natural one. It didn’t work at all, I’d be better of without putting anything on my armpits and it caused a rash that was really hard to get rid off (I don’t have sensitive skin and have never had a problem like that with any cosmetics). Same thing with a “natural” face scrub - it made my skin really mad. So now I’m back to using my regular stuff, which also happens to be 4 times cheaper.
Was there baking soda in the natural deodorant? Because that can cause a rash. Little seee farm is a good natural brand but it’s a paste. Washing with 10% benzoyl peroxide a let it sit on armpits then wash will keep on smell good for almsot whole day. After that you can go back to just aluminum free regular deodorant or wear none. The 10% benzoyl peroxide changes everything in the smell game it’s perfect
I use "natural" deodorant because it's usually in a plastic-free packaging, AND it works for me (I don't stink and have no problems), not all of them work, but I found one that does and I stick to it, although it contains baking soda. I was wondering if the same thing was true about cornstarch, like what's the pH of those deodorants if they don't contain any baking soda?
Same here. What's worse is that I am the type that has to wear the clinical strength because i sweat and smell off the charts if i don't. So, I am at a loss.
Momma Goth I was the exact same way. I would sweat through anything. But I think my body was addicted to aluminum. Sounds crazy but my pores were so clogged with aluminum and conventional deodorant. I used alcohol pads under my arms the first couple weeks to clean and help with B.O. but now I’m fine. I’ve used natural deodorant for over a year now and I actually sweat less. I think my body just kept needing more and more aluminum. Sounds crazy, but that’s what happened to me. Can’t explain it.
HK Stans Thank you! I just had to miss my follow up appt because of all this COVID stuff, but so far everything seems good. And I have no problems with natural deodorant at all. I found a brand that works for me. Doctors always have a different opinion on what causes certain things... my gyno and surgeon have differing opinions on birth control. But either way, I’m going to keep using natural deodorant to do everything in my power to prevent more tumors.
um so i’ve been smelling bad for no reason then
😂
Me as I walk into the washroom and put on deodorant
I didn't want to be the one to tell you.
FUNNY 😄😄
Me a few months ago when I did the research🤦
Ive used regular deodorant for most of my life and it turned my pits dark and it caused swollen clogged pores which was painful at times. Switching to non aluminum has cleared these issues for me. I still sweat with the non aluminum but i dont stink which is what i am looking for. Sweating is natural. This has been my experience. Everyone is different.
see for me I hate sweating. It's an ADHD texture issue. I hate it so much, but I think I'm reacting to my Al-based deodorant
@@m1nt8168 I also have sensory issues and feeling the sweat is just 🥴.

Same here. This is the second doctor I’ve heard this from
you can test a part of it out on yourself, too. if you feel your lymph nodes and skin are fine, it might be fine for you... i know i literally felt that it was wrong for me. a week after coming off of aluminium i had a whole different feeling in my armpit area. if you don't notice any change, you're probably someone who does fine on aluminium.
Are use a natural deodorant it’s not for everybody but I don’t wanna use a deodorant that’s clogging my pores
aluminum deodorants give my cysts under my arms!! so i can’t use it
I used antiperspirants all throughout my childhood and suffered from large painful cysts, itchy rashes, and really dark hyperpigmentation that was very unattractive. All of that stopped once I started using natural deodorants that didn't include aluminum. & TBH I barely even need to wear deodorant anymore. Everybody's body is just different.
Yeah, same.
Same, I used "clinical strength" antipersperant, got marble- sized painful cysts in my pits, and started stinking no matter how often I applied. For 8 years I made my own deodorant, and it helped me and now I use Native and don't stink, don't hurt, and don't itch.
You might want to read my comments. I agree w/you. Everybody's different. Aluminum affects some of us !
If you used it after you shaved that's probably why.
I don't like greenwashing, but my doctor found a direct link between swollen lymph nodes under my arm related to aluminum in the brand name deodorant I was using. That was a wakeup call.
How did he find the correlation? That can't be determined without research
What was the brand
I get em too with The Body Shop antiperspirant rolls.
I always thought it was just something I kind of had to live with
I used to get them haven’t in the last year and a half when I switched to native
The only reason I use natural deodorant is for their low-waste packaging! I wish more main stream brands would get on board with low-waste.
Good point. Lush Cosmetics has deodorants that they sell as bars, like soap, so it can definitely be done. Obv being Lush it's mostly essential oils, but worked quite well for years for me personally.
I agree. Companies should change their packaging not necessarily their ingredients
Absolutely this. Natural deodorants never work for me but I keep being tempted by a new one that just came out because you pay for an applicator container and then you just buy low-waste refills for it. It's a great idea. I want to be able to use products that actually get the job done without having to deal with so much plastic.
yeesssssss
I agree the only reason I use it is for low waste, you would think that now companies would produce a low waste system

Me too! I tried one of those Native deodorants and I got a painful lump on my armpit.
I stopped using it and the lump went away.
Megan so did I!!!
When you lump, do you mean like a cyst? Or was it something else? That's so scary! Im glad it went away on its own.
My armpits got really dark when I used it ! I hated that but it worked so well
Megan yup same thing happened to me! I tried it a couple times....lumps every time.
I can’t help laughing when you get heated because you do it in such a respectful way. Happy Tuesday! 💙
I only use a “natural” deodorant because I’ve tried every sensitive deodorant you can think of and it all gave me a rash. Finally I found the one deodorant that works and doesn’t give me a rash. I don’t think it has baking soda or essential oils in it.

Many aluminum based deodorants have a warning within the ingredients label. Usually something like "Ask a doctor before use if you have kidney disease". If aluminum isn't harmful, why such a warning? If it isnt harmful, logically it should not matter. right?

Listen, all I know is for the years I’ve been without using conventional deodorant I no longer have swollen nodules under my underarm.
Me too! I used to get such bad in grown hairs, now I dont!
This is so true. I switched up to a natural deodorant and I haven’t had swollen sh*ts on my armpit and I don’t even smell too
me too!
@@JHabc what do you use now?
Some natural deodorants are wonderful and some are bogus. Just like with anything in life, I don't think antagonizing one side and going all the way to the other side is healthy. Just my experience.
I agree with you completely

This information answers why I always broke out from natural deodorants, the baking soda! Thanks for the verification.
Would love a skincare routine for the underarms!! Or something like, "how to reduce darkness under the armpits"
What brand is it?
@@_serenity3298 I use a deodorant too, try out wolfthorn from oldspice, it smells really fruity (you can often find men complaining that it smells too feminine LOL) so its perfect for women. Hate native but to each their own, that’s good you found something that works.
I love it too, and it smells so nice. Mine is Lavender and Rose.
I like their cucumber!! It’s not that strong Secret fake smell
I just started using Lumē. I don’t care what that stuff has in it, I won’t stop using it! I’ve had no irritation and I don’t stink… like, at all! I’m using the fragrance free version & love it.
I love that stuff, i hope they never stop making it!!!
Never ever.
Lesly same thing happened to me last Summer😩 Sweat on that raw skin was painful!!!
That happened to me too
It’s the baking soda! I got it too. Baking soda burn is so painful.
Lesly the exact same thing happened to me it was like a burn, my skin turned red then brown and then peeled off
Lesly yuppp. Plus I started breaking out in my armpits. Huge cyst like demons. I tried the native sensitive deodorant and it all went away. Definitely the baking soda
I don't like aluminum in my deodorant because it can stain white shirts

Nina Vaughn, Native is pretty expensive and it’s not too good, but not the worst

Same. I live in Houston and it's hot and humid and I sweat half as much after switching to no aluminum and letting my body adjust. I also smell way better. And only stink if I sweat a lot and it sits on me all day.
It left me smelling ripe like I wouldn’t want to showers with someone bc that’s how bad it was
That's because your not suppose to use antiperspirant through the day you'll sweat it off and the deodorant helps you not smell that's why the "natural" deodorant is working for you
I loved Native as well, but after many months of using I noticed that I smell much much worse than before.
Hi! Im super interested in switching uo to natural deodrsbts, is there one u recommend the most?:)

I’d stop to clear it up, and when I used it again. . .Rash! Turns out it was around the time that the founders of Native sold to Proctor & Gamble. Gggrrrrrr!
Same!
Me too!
Aww they sold it to them. Dang it
Thank you Dr. Dray! I've tried Schmidt's, Tom's and Native - they all either made me smell worse or irritated my skin! This was so so helpful and informative for someone who suffers from several skin conditions and extremely sensitive skin.
I use Lume and I love it! Just goes to show you everything works different for people.
I can't believe I missed this video, I literally almost choked on my soup when she said "throw up my hands and lick stamps for a living". i love her
I needed to hear this. I tried three different “natural” deodorants and found them to be stinky. I always ended up using my Dove anti-perspiration deodorant and then I’m fearful maybe this is harming me but also skeptical. I love the suggestions. Thanks!
It's her opinion. She doesn't know for sure
@@llamacebu216 Dermatologists don't go beyond skin deep. I'd not trust any one giving advice like this when there seems to be some bulimia teeth going on
@@Jennifer-gr7hn then who do you trust? The granny next door who thinks she's a witch?
Dermatologists are the most qualified in this matter; they spend years studying medicine and specialise in dermatology
That's normal your suppose to stink for a while in order to detox.
Good day Dr. Dray!
happy tuesday!
I tried a natural deodorant with essential oils and my armpits were red, irritated and felt like they were burning. 👎
Did it contain baking soda? I used a baking soda containing deodorant, and it literally made my underarms burn, and peel. After healing, I used the same brands baking soda's free deodorant, and it works perfectly fine for me.
Same with me. My armpits were so itchy when i tried natural deodorant. :(
I wish I had seen this before trying a “natural” deodorant.
(Bc I’m sensitive to scented body washes.)
I would have swollen and really tender lymph nodes in my armpits when I used aluminum antiperspirants. Native fixed that. 🤷🏻♀️
I switched to Native just to try it. I actually really do like it. I'm not one of those aluminum is bad for you people I just wanted to see if it worked. I've tried arm and hammer deodorant and that one is a joke. Native does keep me dry.
@@Carefulwiththataxejs81 same with me, idk if it was the aluminum or not but Native is doing it’s job 🙌🏼💕
Amen!!! Knowledge is power!!!!
I think maybe the way in which you are exposed to aluminum may also have to do with it? like it might be different if you are somewhere where it is being mass produced where you might come into contact with it in ways besides applying it topically to a small area of the body and in lower concentrations. but also not sure about long-term use i guess lolol
@@vero6618 Apsolutely. People probably think better safe then sorry, atleast here.
“The thing that makes me want to throw my hands up and lick stamps for a living-“ followed by the face at 8:54 😂
Love you Dr. Dray! Your informative videos never go unappreciated!
And then the exasperated pause at 9:20 😂
Love this!
my favorite part of this video! God I love Dr. Dray 😂
I choked on my water when I heard that, Dr. Dray cracks me up sometimes.😆
my fav part lmao
I've been using 'natural' deodorant for a while because I noticed antiperspirants would make me itch. My favorite brands are Kiss My Face and Tom's of Maine.
“Detox propaganda is a...wooooo nonsense” I am 👏🏻 living 👏🏻 for 👏🏻 Dr Dray 😂😂😂
I love that there was an ad for natural deodorant before this video!
Thank you for your advice !! I was looking for a real natural solution that wasn’t potentially toxic to my skin . I appreciate you 😊
Why would anyone want to stop sweating. The main issue most of the time is odor. Sweat is really good to let out. So instead of using antiperspirants or sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) focus more on slightly lowering the ph of you underarms instead of using irritating ingredients.
Right. Everything she said is the exact reason why people don't want aluminum in their deodorant lol
I can smell you from here
I fell for the “natural” advertising a while ago and let me tell you: I’ve been using regular antiperspirant for years and it was a rather harsh one since it contains a lot of fragrance.
The rash could have been your skin trying to adjust going from your regular routine to natural deo.
I had breast tumors removed last year and my surgeon and radiologist both told me to use an aluminum free deodorant.
Same here. What's worse is that I am the type that has to wear the clinical strength because i sweat and smell off the charts if i don't. So, I am at a loss.
Exactly!!!! I am so sorry you had to go through that, but glad you had those tumors found and removed!
Same here :/
Momma Goth I was the exact same way.
This video is so informative and so much needed and deserves a lot of hype !!!! Thank you Dr. Dray. 😍😍😍😍😍
Why Vanicream aluminum free is better than the other aluminum-free deodorants??!
0:24 instantly bedunks years of research saying aluminum is great for ppl, oh ya it's great if I want alzheimers
