Im 64, and have used aluminum based antiperspirants/deodorants forever. Ive tried "natural" deodorants, and end up with wet, smelly armpits. As you know, there's been no evidence of aluminum deodorants causing breast cancer. I use aluminum foil, and have never been concerned. I thank you for doing this video, because 1 RUclipsr went on a rant about how bad aluminum use in the average person is toxic. It angers me when non scientific people go around scaring people about everyday products that we use. Thank you again for clearing this up. ❤
But the science doesn't really know what causes cancer. Once they reveal what causes breast cancer, then I'll feel that aluminum deodorants are completely safe.
Using aluminum free deodorant in Florida has not been successful for me at all. What’s worse is the ingredients that are in these natural deodorants cause massive skin irritation. I had to go to the docs twice and have cysts under my armpit drained caused by these natural deodorants. Haven’t had issues once I went back to the regular stuff.
@@selmasuleyman9966 I used aluminum from age 11 to 53. No problems except I just got sick of waxy underarms. My skin didn’t feel like skin, but to mention white on my clothes. I like LUME. Zero odor and I’ve learned it’s ok to sweat as long as you don’t smell.
Thank you for debunking this for us! Scaring people to sell products is a sad, unfortunate reality these days. Thank you for your research and time you put into your videos. ❤

I would love for you to do a complete series on "toxic chemicals" in our makeup, skin care etc.... I think there is so much misinformation out there however I have fallen prey to the "clean" beauty movement....
She kind of addresses this in her video, clean beauty needs to die in 2020 and other videos. Lab Muffin has a number of videos on this and has rebuttal videos to "Not So Pretty."
I fell for the green/ clean movement in Beauty until I realized that everything was going bad within 6 months. I don't have the budget to sustain that kind of abbreviated lifespan, so back to regular cosmetics for me!
Why are there so many ingredients in make-up and personal care products banned in Europe, but okay to sell in the U.S.? Do they know something we don’t? Are they being overly cautious? Are American Agencies too lax or corrupt? I’m just curious to know what Dr. Dray thinks.
Thank you for tackling this topic! I’m in that club no one wants to join of people that have a lot of skin sensitivities and sadly can’t tolerate aluminum antiperspirants anymore. I miss them, especially in the summer. But I speak from experience when I say rashy armpits will ruin your whole week and make you smell far worse too. So while I’m grateful that the aluminum panic has made it easier for me to readily find good alternatives, I’ve also found myself in a few weird conversations where someone who sees me looking for aluminum free (and fragrance free options) decides to strike up a conversation about the evils of aluminum. Now I know where to send them rather than me having to try to rattle on about how there is no solid evidence for any of it.

Happy Wednesday! I have been binge listening to Dr Dray videos while catching up on work after a 2-week vacation in the National Parks. I really appreciated your commentary on Keds sneakers. I wore the New Balance Fresh Foam sneakers while hiking 5 to 8 miles a day. Despite having arthritis in my feet, they did not hurt at the end of the day. Wearing sneakers like Keds as I child is partly what may have contributed to my arthritis in my feet. Good shoes are so important and something I am willing to spend money on. Luckily, I know how to offset by saving money on skincare thanks to Dr. Dray!😊
Great topic! I've always been curious about this. People seem to think a lot of things are "toxic" when there really is no scientific reason to think they are. Or a high amount of something in a certain form IS known to be toxic, but people assume that applies to smaller amounts/different forms.
Dr. Dray, thank you! I've always been suspicious about the "antiperspirants - breast cancer link." I'm glad you made mention of this and offered clarity on the issue. I've always wondered if there have been any metadata comparison studies that show breast cancer rates between countries where the population normally uses antiperspirants vs. countries that don't. If the rates of breast cancer are the same, I would think that would mean antiperspirants wouldn't be linked. I don't think any such study exists. Anyway, thank you so much for providing clarity on the subject. Honestly, I think this is the first time I've heard a doctor debunk the aluminum antiperspirant issue!
I think it's quite difficult to compare in this way because you'd have to control every confounding variable....and there are so many things that can influence cancer rates, including things we're not quite aware of.
You're blocking your pores from a natural function. If you don't think this is going to have a negative reaction in your body eventually you're kidding yourself. We are meant to sweat and antiperspirants make you sweat more and require you to always use them.
Thank you for clarifying this! I’ve heard that it could be detrimental, in the antiperspirant/ deodorant form, to people “with” kidney disease! But, I appreciate your thorough explanation! I was an Occupational Health Nurse, so the work environment can be most problematic! Thank you so much!!
Thank you Doctor Andrea for debunking these myths about aluminum plus it is really help since it comes from an individual of medicine like yourself 😊❤✌. Same here. 😃 My choice not to use it isn't based on fear mongering. It is just what has worked best for me. I only use deodorants and found a few that actually work and don't cause me irritation.
I have been avoiding aluminum in my deodorant for seven years now. When I used to use aluminum-based deodorant, I would get really, really dark armpits. Like almost black. When I stopped using aluminum deodorant, my pits returned to their normal color in about 1.5 months. (I tried to test it by using deodorants that were otherwise the same as my aluminum-based deodorants, just without the aluminum; it wasn't a perfect test as the ILs weren't otherwise exactly the same, but pretty close. And I've used only unscented deodorants for probably the last 12-15 years, so I don't think this is driven by a reaction to fragrance). So clearly I had some sort of reaction to the aluminum. Given many of the non-aluminum deodorants out there have proven quite effective for me (Lavilin works like a charm), I see no reason to go back to using aluminum.
I had my armpits turn darker when I was using NON-ALUMINUM deodorant. I've used Schmidt's, NOW brand, Native, Tom's of Maine, etc. None of these worked well and very unfortunately they all irritated my undearms (I'm guessing from the high baking soda content and its pH). I've even tried making my own with beeswax, candellila wax, shea, cocoa butter etc (no aluminum). I've tried the crystals as well which weren't irritating but did not seem to work for me. Since then, I've switched back to aluminum and my underarms are currently lightening. Just use what works for you and don't give into the fear mongering is probably the best advice.
@Jj K Sorry...it was anti-perspirant that I was using. I switched from the anti-perspirant to the deodorant from the same brand (similar ILs, just no aluminum), and my armpits went back to a decent color in about 6 weeks. And then I switched to Lavilin because I only have to apply it every 3-5 days...very convenient.
I fell for the Lume aluminum free advertisement…I do not like this product. So thank you Dr Dray for this post. I am going back to my old deodorant and save money. ❤

Relief. Aluminum containing anti-perspirants are the only type that work for me and I feared that dementia would be the price I may pay for that. Whew.
Greetings Dr Dray hope u r well n 🖐Hello Every1 n Happy Wednesday😀n what a Wonderful Vid…. thanks n This is Gonna b so Helpful🔥👍n Continued Blessings to All💜….
I use deodorant in the winter time and antiperspirant in the summer 😊 my boyfriend almost fell for the aluminum scare tactics last time we went shopping together, can’t wait to show him this video!
I'm so relieved! Twenty years ago I heard aluminum was toxic and that I shouldn't use deodorant at all. I basically said, "I don't care! It's better than a lifetime of smelling like a hippie." So glad that little gamble paid off. Also glad I've never smelled like a Woodstock attendee. ;)
Thank you Dr Dray, there has been too much scaremongering about many things. And our wonderful miraculous bodies are designed to, and work to preserve our health and life. Day in , day out our bodies are, expelling toxins and healing us from injury and illness. Miraculous creations that we are! 😊
Thank you for all the info, it is always so interesting and helpful. Love the pop of red colour in the background, the cushions look lovely and cheerful😃
There was a point in time when I feared aluminum based deodorants so I stopped using them. Fast forward to now and I'm not scared of the ingredients anymore but once I switched to Lume, I found no reason to go back. I like the way it makes my armpits feel a lot better. I never did enjoy that starchy banana peel feeling of traditional antiperspirants lol. I like it because it was created by a doctor and I believe it has mandelic acid in it which eats the bacteria or prevents them from creating the smell? I'm not 100% sure on the science haha but I do like the way it feels like a moisturizer versus feeling cakey. I don't know if this is hormone related or aging related maybe even totally a coincidence but I haven't had smelly armpits in a very long time and it kind of correlates to around the time I switched over so do what that information what you will but if anybody's curious or has seen ads for lume and thought about trying it, I absolutely love it and no I'm not sponsored by them 😂
I have used antiperspirants with aluminum ever since I was a pre teen. It's honestly not something I thought about or worried about. Over the years I've tried all natural ones and they never worked for me. I know many people have strong feelings about aluminum and that's fine. Live and let live. Thanks, Dr Dray for going over this again. We can always count on you to keep us informed. Happy Wednesday! Hope you have a peaceful evening. 💖
I wish there was an aluminum free antiperspirant because I always get a rash with antiperspirant…even the Vanicream one 😞. I like the Native sensitive deodorant line but it only covers the smell for a short period of time. I’ve tried the benzoyl peroxide wash too but it doesn’t consistently work and started staining my towels even though I rinse off.
try drinking chlorophyll daily ik some people see it as a scam or it might not work for everyone? but in my personal experience after 3 days of daily consumption my sweat did not smell like anything w no deodorant at all.. but now i tend to apply some native alongside when im not consistent🤞 i recommend testing it out even if it doesnt work for u it wont go to waste bc it serves other health benefits
My husband said that when he takes baths with Epsom Salt and soaks up to the armpits(we have a large tub), he does not have odor. Still sweat but no odor. If you try it, just make sure to drink water after you soak. I haven't tried it. Epsom salt dries the skin on my legs out for some reason. Some people claim that when their diet contributes to changes in odor and sweating. Lume deodorant works pretty well. Secret and Schmidt have a few that I like. Everyone is different. What works for one person may cause irritation or not be effective for another. Good luck.
Always appreciate your content and info. I would be curious because I feel like much of these statements like aluminum is bad or as you have addressed in other videos people pushing 'all natural' beauty care is that you are trying to minimize the load placed on the kidneys to process all that we are taking into our body. I would be curious if you have made a video discussing this. Because I think this is also a way people try and sell products that are said to 'help' kidneys flush out toxins. Would be interested if you have any thoughts on this, apologies if you have already talked about this in prior videos, and thanks again for all that you create and put out.
She's absolutely correct. But, talk to your Dr. if you have kidney issues. Aluminum is a heavy metal that can accumulate in the body, IF your kidneys can't clear it.
I've read that cilantro and other greens with antioxidants can help remove heavy metals but I don't know if that scientifically backed up. Nevertheless I try to include these in my diet for a generally healthy lifestyle overall. Thank you for your great videos!
I eat a lot of fish so sometimes I wonder if my mercury levels are too high. But I'm not really worried about it. Not enough to buy supplements. But like I said, there's no harm in eating greens and ingesting other foods like green tea that have antioxidants. It's not like I'm benefiting big Pharma or anything
I use a salt rock deodorant. It’s literally a smooth block of salt. I’ll never use anything else. I can’t even remember the last time I even remotely smelled and I weight train.
Man,I needed this today.Ive been worried about the deodorant thing and I have switched to deodorant instead of antiperspirant.Deodorants don't work.Im going back to antiperspirants.
Not sure if you already did a video on this but could you talk about fragrance body lotions like Bath & Body Works and if it's safe? Hearing a lot of negative reviews lately.
Since I started using antiperspirants, I don't sweat at all under my armpits, but I also have extreme problems dealing with heat. I can't cool down naturally a d overheat all the time. Summer are dangerous for me. But when I stopped using antiperspirants I couldn't stand the smell.
I've been using dove deodorant stick for years. It just works very well. No dark armpits, no funny stuff. I got worried after hearing all these reports but I will keep using it after this.
For a few weeks I've used aluminum free deodorant having sort of heard that it might be bad. Today I went back to regular aluminum deodorant. I got tired of stinking half way through the day.
Dr Dray, Consumer Report said there is lead in the chocolate. The cacao bean shell have lead as well. The skin creams with cacao butter are tainted as well. I hope you do a video about this and what affects lead would have when used topically.
@@marymckinney4472 Thanks for this comment. I just looked that up and as someone who prefers dark chocolate, I'll be looking more into this and shopping the better route. I did find this comment which I thought was helpful: The writer of the article recommends (I'm paraphrasing these): -Eat the bars known to have the lowest levels of lead and cadmium (obviously) -Limit how often you eat dark chocolate -Eat milk chocolate more often -Don't assume organic dark chocolate is safe -Don't give dark chocolate to kids or pregnant people -Be careful about other products that have chocolate as an ingredient -Eat a balanced diet, including foods that have anti-heavy-metal nutrients (calcium, iron, selenium, vitamin C, and zinc)
There are a couple doctors who have shorts on this. One who's a naturopath suggests doing the occasional detox. Another doctor says that the main issue is in darker chocolates so maybe stick to milk chocolates and white chocolates.
Thank you for the information. What antiperspirant would you recommend? I’ve only been using deodorants the last few years. Currently I use Now aluminum free deodorant.
Hi Dr Drey. Thank you for yet another great informative video. But I have a question. I am all for aluminium in deodorants but what about people that get dark armpits ? Could aluminium contribuir to this ?
I've had the opposite effect. It was the high concentration of baking soda in NON aluminum deodorants that turned my armpits darker. They are currently becoming lighter as I move back to aluminum. Also, they don't burn anymore. I guess my skin just didn't agree with baking soda at that level. You could try the crystals. My friend uses them and seems to like them well enough.
She explains this in the video, how to fade dark underarms. She says the aluminum salts might be irritating for some, but as far as hyperpigmentation, that has tended to come from natural deodorants (which she also has a video on).
It should be noted like, absolutely no one should be using spray-on deodorant, or any other aerosol, as all aerosols are inherently not safe to breathe
I don't ever use any type of deodorant but I just love the information on your videos 😅😊 I find glycolic acid to work well but I only remeber to use once every 3 weeks or so

Relief. Aluminum containing anti-perspirants are the only type that work for me and I feared that dementia would be the price I may pay for that. Whew.
Been curious about this for a while. Thank you ❤

Can i suggest a updated/new video for summer on UPF clothing & which brands you trust and love, please? Thank you always!!
Also glad I've never smelled like a Woodstock attendee. ;)
Loving your recommendation for the Vanicream antiperspirant, works great, no bad reactions.
Thank you Dr Dray, there has been too much scaremongering about many things. And our wonderful miraculous bodies are designed to, and work to preserve our health and life. Day in , day out our bodies are, expelling toxins and healing us from injury and illness. Miraculous creations that we are! 😊
As a speech/swallow therapist working in the hospital setting, I appreciate the shout-out on aspiration risks! ❤
Can you Make a video on ear eczema, both inner and outer ear? Weeping, crusting, pain, smell (?!), and swelling. Cannot get in to see a derm yet
Thank you for all the info, it is always so interesting and helpful. Love the pop of red colour in the background, the cushions look lovely and cheerful😃
Happy Wednesday Dr Dray! Thank you for this video! 0:36
Thanks for watching
Thanx a bunch Dr. D! I tried an antiperspirant with no aluminum and guess what? It did not perform well! Going back to my fav.
Happy Wednesday, Dr. Dray❤
Happy Wednesday

@@whitneybrown4067 hello Whitney 🤍🤗
Pink throw pillows look awesome!
@@doloresdaphne8541 thanks! What brand do you use?
My husband said that when he takes baths with Epsom Salt and soaks up to the armpits(we have a large tub), he does not have odor. Still sweat but no odor. If you try it, just make sure to drink water after you soak. I haven't tried it. Epsom salt dries the skin on my legs out for some reason. Some people claim that when their diet contributes to changes in odor and sweating. Lume deodorant works pretty well. Secret and Schmidt have a few that I like. Everyone is different. What works for one person may cause irritation or not be effective for another. Good luck.
Smiles in hyperhidrossis. Aluminum and I are best friends 😂
Hi Dr.Dray do you think applying a mattifying spray on top of sunscreen will ruin the efficacy of it?
I'd see her and other derms videos on reapplication of sunscreen over makeup, where they go into products to use (sunscreen powders, spf sprays, etc).
@@db-gb5xiwhat video do you recommend watching about this subject? I love this sunscreen that I’m using but I just want it to be less oily 😩
As a dermatologist I like to watch your videos. Really informative. BTW your makeup is really nice.
She's absolutely correct. But, talk to your Dr. if you have kidney issues. Aluminum is a heavy metal that can accumulate in the body, IF your kidneys can't clear it.
Thank you for sharing this! I wondered about this and love hearing from a real medical professional. God bless!!
You always make so much sense. Thanks for keeping us informed.
I have always wondered about this... 💜💜💜
Thanks for watching
Can you make a video on how to tackle weepy eczema before we get in to see a derm. What steps can be taken/what products can be used?
I've read that cilantro and other greens with antioxidants can help remove heavy metals but I don't know if that scientifically backed up. Nevertheless I try to include these in my diet for a generally healthy lifestyle overall. Thank you for your great videos!
Go See Christy (esty), has a video on this, 3 tips to increase sulforaphane in foods.
I was doing aluminum free deos for like 4 yrs until i tried antiperspirant again. Not going back lol. I'll continue my use of aluminum.
What deodorant do you use??
Thank you I've been wondering about this for a while.
I use a salt rock deodorant. It’s literally a smooth block of salt. I’ll never use anything else. I can’t even remember the last time I even remotely smelled and I weight train.
Thanks…been waiting for you to tackle this one!!!
Man,I needed this today.Ive been worried about the deodorant thing and I have switched to deodorant instead of antiperspirant.Deodorants don't work.Im going back to antiperspirants.
Literally throwing away my aluminum free deodorant right NOW. I hardly sweat and somehow I smell worse with it on.
Hello, what would be your opinion on this new solid rock deodorant made of alum ? Have a super good Wednesday
Thank you, oh voice of reason!
Not sure if you already did a video on this but could you talk about fragrance body lotions like Bath & Body Works and if it's safe? Hearing a lot of negative reviews lately.
I always leave from watching your videos much smarter than I was before
Since I started using antiperspirants, I don't sweat at all under my armpits, but I also have extreme problems dealing with heat.
Happy Wednesday Dr Dray...see you tomorrow x💙🤩
I use aluminum free deodorant and I don't have any problems using it
For a few weeks I've used aluminum free deodorant having sort of heard that it might be bad. Today I went back to regular aluminum deodorant. I got tired of stinking half way through the day.
Thank you Dr dray.
Thank you for presenting the science.
Can we @ Gwyneth Paltrow???
Thank you Dr Dray always love your details. Happy Wednesday to you and all 😂
We are made from a lot of the same elements of the earth. Just facts!
Dr Dray, Consumer Report said there is lead in the chocolate. The cacao bean shell have lead as well. The skin creams with cacao butter are tainted as well. I hope you do a video about this and what affects lead would have when used topically.
fearmongering...
@@meganNefarious Not fear mongering just concern. Wow you like to take it to the extreme.
@@marymckinney4472 I meant, what you heard is just fear mongering...I wouldn't be concerned... Not sure how you got that confused lol..
@@marymckinney4472 Thanks for this comment. I just looked that up and as someone who prefers dark chocolate, I'll be looking more into this and shopping the better route. I did find this comment which I thought was helpful:
The writer of the article recommends (I'm paraphrasing these):
-Eat the bars known to have the lowest levels of lead and cadmium (obviously)
-Limit how often you eat dark chocolate
-Eat milk chocolate more often
-Don't assume organic dark chocolate is safe
-Don't give dark chocolate to kids or pregnant people
-Be careful about other products that have chocolate as an ingredient
-Eat a balanced diet, including foods that have anti-heavy-metal nutrients (calcium, iron, selenium, vitamin C, and zinc)
Try this video, drugstore products that fight body odor. Some other derms with videos on this are the budget dermatologist and dr sam ellis.
Thank you for this video!
Super helpful!!! Thank you!!!
Happy Wednesday!
It may take years to prove that correlation was indeed causation.
The only chemical that bothers me in deodorants is propylene glycol, which makes me incredibly itchy.
@@czechmatey thanks for sharing.
She explains this in the video, how to fade dark underarms. She says the aluminum salts might be irritating for some, but as far as hyperpigmentation, that has tended to come from natural deodorants (which she also has a video on).
@@db-gb5xi thanks that’s really helpful
Happy Wednesday guys xo
It is banned in Europe
It should be noted like, absolutely no one should be using spray-on deodorant, or any other aerosol, as all aerosols are inherently not safe to breathe
Thank you Doc for sharing.
what about magnesium to use in underarms?
I don't ever use any type of deodorant but I just love the information on your videos 😅😊 I find glycolic acid to work well but I only remeber to use once every 3 weeks or so
Thanks so much for this video
I was thinking of buying an Aluminum Razor. Henson to be exact.
Is that harmful for the skin?
