I believe the basis of healthy, beautiful locs is to do the least amount of everything. I two-strand twisted mine two years ago and they have been amazing. A lil oil here and there, no creams, no pomades, no twist products, very little manipulation, retwist only every couple of months and only using jamaican caster oil water. Everything minimally!!

Definitely all of this, locs are very low maintenance and people still try to handle it as if it was loose and then experience damage and say "locs did it" no, yall did it, not to say thats her but just generally speaking.
I do and did the same! About 3 months in I realized I didn’t want to use anything on my hair besides oil and water. Also, over styling your starter locs can weaken and damage them!
Exactly...a lot of people on here doing too much and using unnecessary products.
As a master cosmetologist with locs, it looks like you may have experienced some postpartum hair loss. The way it broke around the front is where it happened to all of my clients. They had no edges and It comes out in clumps just by running your hands through your head. It's best not to put tension on your scalp like you stated in the video. After a few months it does grow back, but I would be willing to bet that was the initial cause of the breakage.
Plus she said that she wore her hair in a low bun as a protective style. Doesn't that put a whole bunch of tension on your front Edge's?

3:14 I also started with two strands and interlocked for a year or more. It is possible to over tighten.
Also.. my hair grows outside of my locs. No breakage.., that’s just how my new growth grew out.

That's such a good point. It may not even have been breakage. She may have just needed to keep adding the new growth the locs. But she did mention bald spots...

And your hair was honestly still on the very new stage. Still forming and still maturing. You honestly could have left them in and just went with the process.
Yes I feel like she didn’t really want locs that’s the purpose of locs to let ur hair get a little damaged and nap nap nap up in the process what she should have done is what I did when I seen that happening to me I learned how to protect my hair and leave it alone
I'm so surprised by the timeline. It usually takes years for damage to show up. In 3 months you would, or should only have had one retie.
I started my locs the exact same way and maintain them myself with minimal issues. I hope you have better luck next time.

Also, I’m going on 3 years loc’d and interlocking still pulls my roots. That method definitely isn’t for everyone no matter what stage!

I don’t have fine hair I have 4c hair and shave my locs off twice. My root were thinning. I believe I might have been deficient in some vitamins and minerals. But locs can weigh the hair and the twisting and stuff can cause tension no matter what hair texture you have. Still learning how to take care of my hair. At this point it seems like having a low cut is easier to maintain.
Interlocking thinned some of my locs out. It was neat but i wont do it again. ❤
Thanks for sharing your story! Everything is a learning experience and ultimately what might work for one doesn't work for others. I started out with comb coils, and got my hair retwisted every six weeks. After 6 months I started getting my hair interlocked. I normally interlock every 8 weeks. I have been loc'd for 6 years with no thinning. With that being said don't let the interlock process scare you. Wishing you the very best on your new loc journey!

Why so much buildup and lint at your roots? You damaged your hair. Just start when you're in the right mind space to care for them properly. 💜
This is why I advocate going to a professional. No shade to the diyers but its a small investment and you save so much on products! I'll be a year in my journey in January and my hair is flourishing! Less is more. All I put in my hair is rose water, steam once a month, and wash with design essentials.

I've had my locs for like 4.5 years now and I can tell you that's all apart of the journey.
Your hair wasn’t breaking or thinning g. Your hair grows outside your locs. Also, Interlocking is definitely not
A DIY task. There’s certain directions and methods that should be used when interlocking.
I think I know my hair better than you lol.. there was a ton of breakage at the roots and bald spots forming

I'm sorry about what happened, but glad you learned from it. You and your hair are beautiful. If you try again, it may be good to consult a loctitian in person about parting sizes, formation techniques, and maintenance - consultations are not thousands of dollars, and you can still diy, just with some guidance. Also, loc repair isn't thousands of dollars, either - even though next time, you won't need it because you will be sure to avoid tension on the roots. Keep researching and be encouraged. I recommend Yannie the Locologist, a sincere teacher who educates about natural, healthy hair and minimalism in maintenance.

Black Jamaican Castor Oil or olive oil on your scalp, water, and sit in the sun. If you use products use the ones that don’t cause your hair to be hard and sticky like styling gels.

I did two strand twistsvand lasted 6 months. I had to undo them because they weren't established very well and weren't forming well. Some parts were not laying flat and the final retie (and styling) left me in pain for aboht 3 weeks.
It took me about 2.5 days to undo but I'm glad I persevered 😅 I think I rushed in without considering the options. This is despite wanting them for about 12 years and over a year researching RUclips and instagram 🤦🏾♀️ I left mine for a month before interlocking. I will restart them with a loctician and I intend to self maintain. My dilemma is that I like to colour my hair to cover my greys. I went 6 months without colouriing but wasn't ready to embrace the grey. I need to figure out microlocs and dyeing them without compromising the locs too much.
I started my own locs 7 months ago. 2 strand twist also. You definitely caused too much tension on your roots doing the interlocking. I have fine hair just like you. We have to handle our hair a lil more gently.I made my locs bigger cuz I wanted volume.

I interlock mine with no issues and I know people who do as well… it had to be too much tension and probably too frequently. You can just twist the perimeter if you want it to look freshly done all the time… but in 3 months you should really only interlocked it once.
From watching your video hun, I started with 2 strand twist as well then went to interlocking 6 weeks after. So maybe, you did them to tight? Bc I had started doing my own reties and interlocked one too tight and got a bald spot 😂 but lesson learned… you should try it again and figure out how you to want to start them off.. stay blessed
I cut my locs off every yr for 10 yrs. Once i freeforned my locs myself i fell in love. Its been almost 3 yrs now

Hi! My suggestion would be to wash hair, oil the scalp, braid hair (w/no extensions) then leave it to grow👌🏽

@beautyofnaychure you're welcome ✨how often to wash? It depends. If your scalp isn't itching, once or twice a month. I'd also wash it in braids as well. Once dry, you can re-braid to neaten them up. I have more info on my channel. This technique helps my hair growth 🙏🏽 😘
u naturally have lower density hair and thin strands therefore you need to handle your hair with extra care escpially when it comes to locs as it carries much more weight. Just learn more about your hair type and how you can tweak your maintenance that fits it, thats all.

Awwwwwwwww. I'm so sorry that happened to you! Like someone else stated it was probably post-partum hair loss. I've been loc'd 24 years, and at one point experienced thinning -which I'm recovering from now- ,but elmy thinning was do to stress. I DID overtwist-which made things worse- but my hair never came out like that. Could it be health related?
I would never recommend interlock. FYI from a trichologist our hair curls in a spiral pattern anything other than spiral motion will cause damage period. Hair looks damage from dryness. rose water with castor oil or jojoba homemade, watch allergies

The firat pne came out easiest because it wasnt wet. Wet hair tears with manipulation

Get you a loctician. It eases allot of stress of trying to figure out what to do.

I don’t understand this. I’ve had locs since 2001, my daughter has had locs from the time she was 3 years old, she’s 17 now and my son has had locs from the time he was 2. I’ve maintained all our hair myself because I had locs before they were a thing so I had to learn to maintain my own hair there were no loctitians in the early 2000s in salons so I’ve never bothered to go to a salon in over 25 years. I’m sorry I just don’t think this is a thing, locs take patience you can’t rush them, you have to go through the crazy look period as they grow out

Find a professional certified Loctition! I can see that you have product in your fair. You must do your research. I'm sorry this happened to you! You did this and maybe should've consulted with as loctition. You interlocked too tight, cauding your follicles to pull out! 😢
This is me rn I’m 5 month in. By time my first retwist there were a couple that were thinning . Which is weird because I had mini twist that I did myself 2 months before and they were fine .
Yeah the whole process just ended up being so overwhelming for me bc everyone has different opinions about how to install and care for them plus everyone’s hair is different so I would def feel more comfortable going to a professional from now on 😅

I freeformed the first year my first retwist i was a year loced i guess now im semi freeformed maybe you were causing too much tension 🤷
You are beautiful. So is your hair. As I, it appears that you were trying to speed up the process. When I had starter locs, I was thinking I had made a huge mistake (fallen edges, dry locs, etc). A Queen from Gyana (whose locs were free-formed), told me that the loc journey is a "journey", and will not form overnight. I wanted that microwave way of life... Pop my locs in the microwave for one minute and they would be long and full. Once I embraced my locs and got over the negative internal thoughts, they thrived. With being a new mom again, you may have interlocked too soon. Your hair looks like it was experiencing the effects of post-partum. If you decide to loc again, semi-freeform is best. Keep the scalp moisturized with water and nourished with oil, sleep with a satin bonnet/scarf, wash with natural and non-harsh products, drink plenty of water. Lastly... Be Patient! Sending good vibes to you Queen!

Hair looked so much better when it was healthy and placed in a low bun not everyone can rock locs they can be very damaging, dry and cause hair loss. Just rock a bun

If you're a vegetarian... That could be a problem... Nutrition is the foundation.. I've done just what you did and I had no issues Sis... Look to incorporate more red meat and real butter... You'll see your hair blossom soon after..
That is not entirely true, most Rastafarians are vegetarian and they don’t experience hair thinning, in fact there very little nutritional value in the meat humans consume now as opposed to natural proteins in legumes, beans and soy, I’ve had locs for 25 years and been a vegan for 10.

I'm an great example of healing on high saturated fat and red meat base nutrition. People need to wake up from this plant base non sense the white man implemented in the black culture...

Just my unsolicited to cents.. I literally think from start to finish the mistakes made were based on pure lack of research. I spent literally 2 months researching before I started. Right from the beginning you're interlocking which I would never do at any stage but especially at that stage. I don't know what your hair care routine was in between but what really made me decide to comment was when you were removing your locks. Lock removal requires absolute saturation of the lock.. It should have been dripping with conditioner and never ever dry. I want to be positive but in my opinion is videos like this that steer people down the wrong direction and perhaps it's what got you into trouble. I think you should try again and if you do there is nothing wrong with starting your locks yourself I did mind myself and they are flourishing. There are several RUclipsrs on here that know what they're talking about and you can take a little bit from each along with common sense especially the beginning to get you started. Over time learning what works for your hair whether it's oils no oils daily misting, ETC you'll be able to experiment and see what works.
Like I said it's hair it will grow back but it's obvious to me that from the very beginning you watched a few videos, saw something about interlocking and went for it. All of your damage is operator error.
I’m not “steering” people in ANY direction. Purely sharing my personal experience and I literally stated my hope is for other people to learn from my mistakes to avoid the outcome I had. Some people can figure it out on their own but it’s still best to seek professional help or advice because there is too much contradicting information on the internet
