To be honest sis, your stylist choosing to back comb your hair before crocheting is why you lost so much length but you actually don’t need to back comb. I’m a locologist/loctitian who’s been instant locking hair with the crochet method for over 5 years and one thing I can tell you that I’ve learned over the years is as long as you have a good technique down when it comes to crocheting, you don’t need to back comb. Your stylist should have also explained to you that depending on the parting style you choose, determines how “full” your over all look will be. Straight parts (square) equals less fullness. Circle/curved parts (round) or even the triangle parts will give a fuller look so you wouldn’t even need “as many” locs (number count) to be high because the curved parts gives the “appearance” of fuller hair.
I got a question I am planning to get instant locs, I have an ideal thickness of how I want my locs to be when they mature. However I don’t know if I should get them smaller or the same size
Hi, I got mine slightly smaller so that when they thicken they would be the perfect size. I’m not sure if this would work for you, but keep in mind if you get them thick they’ll get even thicker. So it may be best to go slightly smaller. Just look up some loc size pictures on google to compare what you think best fits your liking. 💓
It depends on how thick or thin your hair is... You cannot get over a hundred locks if you have very fine hair, your locs will be popping off left and right. Texture is important when deciding a lock size
@@theaudacityofnope I have very thin hair as well and I also did the big talk I had about one and a half inch of new growth on my head and I have a total of 48 locs in my head, my loc extensions are shoulder length and it looks very natural and I do not feel any tension on my scalp, I love it!!! I've learned within the first two years of my lock journey that frizz is part of the process, and it's really not a problem. I used to cut it. But I noticed after some started thinning and I was combining locks with two strand twists or even braids, it wasn't as effective because there was no frizz to mesh together. I find that it's better to tuck the frizz into the locks with a crochet needle. Yes, it takes time. But it'll help keep the locks strong.
Locs are a natural hairstyle... frustration with frizz to the point of cutting is simply weird. People need to interrogate their true reason for wantting locs in the first place. If the desire is aesthetics to the point of manicurist them, then faux locs are the best option.

Your locs are beautiful! I got mine march of this year and they cost me $800 not including the price to style it. Now I’m regretting them and plan to uninstall them. My hair sat and the top of my shoulder. I got 8 inch extensions with small brick layer parts and now my hair is in the middle of my back. My extensions are still very hard😞….even after using the rose water and having regular maintenance. I have a very fine hair texture and it’s extremely curly. Now my hair is actually unraveling from the extensions. I’ve also had a lot of them fall out and some began to slide. I told my stylist about them and she claimed that it was fine. However, now you can clearly see the difference between my hair and the extensions. Plus, I’ve had a lot of the extensions either pop in half or pop at the end. My stylist said that it was normal….clearly it’s not. I hate that my first experience was so terrible. For what it’s worth I’ll be taking out the extensions and keep my hair loc’d
Sorry you had to go through that. I’d be devastated too. Your stylist honestly should’ve took them out for you instead of letting you wait it out. But Most definitely if you had that bad experience with extensions I recommend taking them out. It sounds like you had a nice hair texture before the extensions and due to them not matching your hair texture it was hard to blend it. Also, not sure rose water and oil work on extensions but I know it works on your real hair because it absorbs it and moisturizes it. I definitely recommend trying locs with your real hair although it’s short, it’ll grow in no time. My instant locs were also really really short but my hair has grown a lot. 💓
@@ShaDeanaZ thank you! I took the extensions out myself two weeks ago and left my real hair loc’d and honestly I love my natural locs and I’m using the rose water and oil on them.
Sorry to hear this. My hair was at the base of my neck and I wanted extensions. My loctition advised against it. She said she could install perfectly and it would look 100% natural. But in time my hair would not blend. I have high density 4c. She said that my hair grows outward while the extension would hang down. Eventually I would hate it and want it redone. Plus it could potentially be bad advertising for her. So it was best for both of us of I didn't get extensions.
For me, I'm loving mine. I have 26. But my fear is them turning flat. Like when I wear a head scarf, not a bonnet, I just feel like I'm flattening them. I just did a retwist so I'm hoping my retwist can train them to stay circular shape. 😩🤷
If you spray them with water they will thicken & swell. Preferably use rose water every other day & your locs shouldn’t flatten. Especially when they are completely locked, they should keep its shape & form. I notice my locs only get flat when I sleep on one side or air dry my locs & they lay on them. But other than that, they shouldn’t get flat. 💓
@@ShaDeanaZ okay thanks. I currently use rose water. I'll try it every other day. I washed my hair already and haven't experienced them swelling yet. Quick question, how long does it take the retwisted hair to loc with the rest of the shaft
It can take many months because the locking process is not quick. Everyone’s locking time frame is different. Some people hair locs up quicker than others so it may take some time
I’m currently going through mine flattening. It’s very annoying, but I was told that from spraying or washing your locs and then tying them up/down or laying down will cause to them flatten.😣.
You look amazing Goddess 👑✨but I see so many people getting instant locs and I don’t innerstand why . Everyone’s reason for getting them are different . Mine was because of my spiritual journey so I had to go through every step and process . So just thinking most people will miss some lessons by jumping right through the process by adding hair to your crown 👑 just my opinion
Hey, the stiffness will still be there especially if they’re on the shorter side. That is a part of getting instant locs unfortunately, but it will definitely go away. What helped me was washing them at least once a week, also try moisturizing them with rose water every other day. I hope this helps! 💓
This is more of a choice if you want to or not. But, your locs have to bud (harden) first. That way your locs will return to its natural look no matter what style you wear. After twisting or braiding your locs it should go back to normal especially after washing them, but if not then they are still budding.
I got square parting but I did notice that when you go get a retwist that can change. It all depends on how your loctician parts your hair when they’re giving you a retwist. Because now I have square parts and at the top of my head some parts are triangles.
It was a joke lol. What I mean was wicks don’t take long to create like the smaller locs do, so if you rush you could be leaving with wicks instead of smaller instant locs.
I made the mistake of getting the circle parting instead of square locs. And now I dont know what to do my locs kind of aren’t like really locing in some of them like they look like I got a perm lol. I dont know , I’m just taking it day by day.
What do you mean my instant locs? Adding extensions or using the tool to make them look more mature? People say instant locs for both and I’m a little confused now lol.
My instant locs were created using my real natural hair. My loctician used a crochet hook to create instant locs. Instant Locs require maintenance meaning when you go for a retwist your loctician will use the crochet hook to tighten your instant locs (real hair) so they can maintain its shape. However, with instant locs you still have to wait until they mature, harden and loc. But if you don’t like how short your real hair is some people add extensions to the end by connecting a fake loc.
@@ShaDeanaZ Thank you so much for explaining. I have 2 strand twists starter locs for 7 weeks with my natural hair. I want to instant loc them bc they keep coming a loose. And I have 4c very kinky hair. So I’m so confused as to why they want to keep unraveling. Lol
You’re welcome and if you don’t want two strand twist anymore and you decide to get instant locs, it’s better sooner than later. So I would recommend getting them instant loc’d if that’s what you want and you’ve done all the research on them. Instant Locs don’t unravel they only need a maintenance of like 2 or 3 months to tighten them but they won’t come undone. So it’s better to do them now than to wait any longer before your hair locs up
Hey, I had natural hair for 7 years and I never silk pressed it, I only blowed dried it once. So, I never put any heat on it however, I do miss my afro puff sometimes. I only miss that hairstyle but I hated washing & maintaining it because it took so long. Locs actually make me excited to do my hair lol. An yes locs can be combed out after many years however, the longer you had them the longer it takes to comb out. It’s a very long process & you lose some length when doing so. 💓
I dont no how many locs I have but I'm sure it's no where near 58 😅, my head is little, and I'm just starting my loc journey, it 😅took almost 2 hours my hair is thin, soft , and curly I hope I made the right choice I'm all in, my hair WAS falling out i hope it will grow now 😊
Hey, for a shampoo I use a co-wash. It is by a brand called as I am coconut co-wash which acts as a shampoo and conditioner in one. While my hair is locking and it’s not fully locked yet, I choose not to use a conditioner just yet. So the main products I use are the co-wash, coconut oil, and rose water.
Thank you for this video! I'm currently contemplating getting instalocs. This was very informative! Did you go back to the same person to do the second set?
So I wanted locs but I got wrong locs I got coils one and I don’t she the patience for it my hair is thick and long to my neck next week I’m thinking doing instant locs but how long the stiff will last? And is it good for me? I need knowledge about both locs
They should definitely thicken. I recommend not getting a retwist too often. Also massage your scalp with oil every other night before bed, this will help with new growth.
The person who did your instant locs wasn't a pro. You loose 2 inches max and you can wash your hair immediately. They should be "hard" from the word go. Those were crocheted locs you got, not instant locs. Sorry.
If you googled how instant locs are made, it states that the hair is backcombed and then locked with the help of a crochet needle. Using a crochet needle is the only way to achieve instant locs, therefore, any other method isn’t instant locs. So, in the end I do have instant locs. Depending on the length of your hair not everyone loses 2 inches, some more and some less. If you watched videos of how instant locs are actually made you’d understand more. An it is true that you can wash your hair whenever you want after receiving instant locs, I just chose not to. Lastly, my instant locs came out healthy and exactly how they were supposed to so that’s all that matters. More updated loc content coming soon. 💓
Hi, I have a video that shows the length and size my hair was when I first started so it was really short also. But overtime they do thicken up & of course grow longer. This is the video. ruclips.net/video/uuS9uzkIxv8/видео.html
Hey, the only reason I didn’t start with 2 strands is because they unravel and I couldn’t wear loc styles instantly. Also, I didn’t like how I looked with 2 strands. This is still a great method to start your loc journey though.
It depends, if you start with coils then you may be able to use a crochet needle on your already established love depending on the progress. 8 months to a year in it’s not uncommon for some to use a crochet needle to expedite the already begun locking process
Yes you can…I did a hybrid method this time around where I did coils first, then a week later I used the crochet needle. I have some that are loced together and some that unravel when wet. The only thing to worry about is flatness if that’s not your cup of tea. I prefer the flatter look so it doesn’t bother me. Hth❤️❤️
Hi!! I'm so mad at myself because I seen this video pop up last year when I was doing mine and I said I was going to go back and look at it and never did!!!! I have 30 locs but like alot of people I was focused on the side but now my hair doesn't feel full. I still like it but I don't loooooove them anymore because of that. I love the way your hair is now and my question to you is... what grid pattern did you use?? I have the big parts that you had on your first set. Thank you.
It’s okay, you live and you learn! I have a square grid pattern and it’s a lot of squares which you can see in one of the previous videos of me getting them done. An I’m not sure if you can cut them apart but I don’t recommend that I think it’ll damaged it and not turn out right. My only advice is to try an embrace them and find more females with locs your size because that helps. It give you something to to look towards like motivation. But if that doesn’t help and you’re super unhappy then it’s your choice to start over or not. 💕
Thank you so much. Yours look amazing. How long have you had these ones in? Girl I already took them out. It was a terrible experience that I will never do again. Lol I'll let me hair stay free for a few days and do them over.
Next month will make a year since I’ve had them. Yes, I’ll say nothing is wrong with taking them out if you’re not happy or satisfied because hair depression is a real thing and I don’t play about my hair lol. If I was in your position I would’ve done the same thing. So I definitely recommend getting them done exactly how you want and keep trying until you are happy with them. 💓
Yes, still wash your hair even if it’s not loc’d just not too often. I recommend once every 2 weeks unless you are in sports then once a week or twice.
Getting longer instant locs wouldn’t help with stiffness because instant locs are stiff regardless the length when you first get them done. Overtime, the stiffness will wear off itself especially as it grows. I recommend moisturizing with rose water and oil. Also, when you wash them the water will loosen them a bit as well. 💓
Hey! I have a square grid pattern, however it changes when you get retwists because your location may part it slightly different so I have some triangle parting at the top of my head.
Dreads Aren’t Suppose To Be Neat Frizz Comes With All Types Of Dreads So Embrace The Longer You Have Your Dreads It’ll Be Reduced Maybe You’re Not Cut Out For Dreads 🤣
Both my brothers & my dad have locs. Their frizz has most definitely reduced as their locs matured. Compared to my hair, this eventually gave their locs a neater look. Therefore, all locs don’t stay frizzy, it reduces. So I’ve seen both frizzy & neat locs, maybe it just depends on hair texture. An I embrace every stage of the locking process.
I use Ebin New York 24 hour edge tamer purple container. It works but sometimes leaves white residue. So I’ve been meaning to try a lady that made her own edge control, her Instagram is _uniquelycrowned that’s the next edge control I’ll be trying. 💓

Whew Chile $800 😲
Some people hair locs up quicker than others so it may take some time
@@ShaDeanaZ 🤦😩 dang I'm starting to feel like I have to keep doing the crochet method but I dead axx don't know how to work the needle
I’m currently going through mine flattening. It’s very annoying, but I was told that from spraying or washing your locs and then tying them up/down or laying down will cause to them flatten.😣.
Frizz is apart of the loc journey
Can you show us how you maintain your locs? They are amazing!
Your locs look great! Thanks for the video. I never had instant locs, but I learned a lot from your video.
Thank you 💓
my first time on your channel.. not me bopping and dancing to your intro hhaha now lemme sit and listen to why i came here
i have my instant locs over a year and they still stiff what can i do?
😅 she talking about time. It took me 2+ days (12 one day and nearly 14 the second day) to get my Sisterlocs...consider yourself lucky chile
Instant locs and loc extensions are different things. Most don’t add hair with instant locs
I started my instant locs like 2-3 months ago and they’re still stiff. The stiffness is really irritating.
Hey, the stiffness will still be there especially if they’re on the shorter side. That is a part of getting instant locs unfortunately, but it will definitely go away. What helped me was washing them at least once a week, also try moisturizing them with rose water every other day. I hope this helps! 💓
How do you know when your able to wear love styles with your instant locs "that way they don't get disformed?"
This is more of a choice if you want to or not. But, your locs have to bud (harden) first. That way your locs will return to its natural look no matter what style you wear. After twisting or braiding your locs it should go back to normal especially after washing them, but if not then they are still budding.
Merci beaucoup pour ta super vidéo, cela m'a beaucoup aidé à faire mon choix 😊🔝👍🏾
I actually watched this whole thing !! Didn’t fast forward, was very informative
Thanks so much! 💓
It took 14hrs 🥺 but I’m loving it
Omg so I love your locs. I'm installing mine today. Ty for this video ❤
i’m new to ur channel and i’m thinking about getting instant locs
You should do it. I got mines a month ago. It’s dope! You won’t regret it.
Love this. What parting did you use?. Am also looking for thickness and fullness. Please help!!! Gonna do them soon
I got square parting but I did notice that when you go get a retwist that can change. It all depends on how your loctician parts your hair when they’re giving you a retwist. Because now I have square parts and at the top of my head some parts are triangles.
Great video. For those who don't know about instant locs, this was very informative.
I got instant locs 1 month ago but I combed them out 1 week later as I didn’t like th
The new Klixer electric crochet dread needle would’ve saved you so much time! It’s a game changer.
I've been trying my hardest to get one but it seems impossible to catch them in stock on their website
@@TemayaCurryAlston oh I bet they are in high demand, and a little pricey but I’m sure it’ll pay for itself… good luck with finding one 🙂
That thing is a WASTE of money
Fun fact, if you have long hair and you go the traditional route with locs. Your hair will still shrink and you’ll lose length while it’s maturing. 😢
Very good video and insight! Well explained ❤
What did you mean "if you rush the instant locs you will have wicks" ? I know what wicks are as a loc style 😊
It was a joke lol. What I mean was wicks don’t take long to create like the smaller locs do, so if you rush you could be leaving with wicks instead of smaller instant locs.
@@ShaDeanaZ ohhhhhhh! 🤣🤣 I thought you was being literal. I was really trying to figure it out
Thank you queen.. definitely earned my subscribe
I made the mistake of getting the circle parting instead of square locs. And now I dont know what to do my locs kind of aren’t like really locing in some of them like they look like I got a perm lol. I dont know , I’m just taking it day by day.
How long have you had your locs?
So it’s better to do them now than to wait any longer before your hair locs up
After so long can you comb your locs out? (Years)… Do you miss being Natural & getting silk press?
Hey, I had natural hair for 7 years and I never silk pressed it, I only blowed dried it once. So, I never put any heat on it however, I do miss my afro puff sometimes. I only miss that hairstyle but I hated washing & maintaining it because it took so long. Locs actually make me excited to do my hair lol. An yes locs can be combed out after many years however, the longer you had them the longer it takes to comb out. It’s a very long process & you lose some length when doing so. 💓
SHE IS SO BEAUTIFUL HER ACCENT HER FACE HER HAIR DAMNN SHE CUTE AS HELL
I dont no how many locs I have but I'm sure it's no where near 58 😅, my head is little, and I'm just starting my loc journey, it 😅took almost 2 hours my hair is thin, soft , and curly I hope I made the right choice I'm all in, my hair WAS falling out i hope it will grow now 😊
Hey, hopefully, you see some improvement with your hair. Locs definitely saved my hair too! 🙌🏽💗
What type of conditioner and shampoo did you use to wash out your locks?
Hey, for a shampoo I use a co-wash. It is by a brand called as I am coconut co-wash which acts as a shampoo and conditioner in one. While my hair is locking and it’s not fully locked yet, I choose not to use a conditioner just yet. So the main products I use are the co-wash, coconut oil, and rose water.
Thank you for this video! I'm currently contemplating getting instalocs. This was very informative! Did you go back to the same person to do the second set?
Yes, the same person did the second set. 💕
So I wanted locs but I got wrong locs I got coils one and I don’t she the patience for it my hair is thick and long to my neck next week I’m thinking doing instant locs but how long the stiff will last? And is it good for me? I need knowledge about both locs
My grid and count is f***ked up too because I didn't know either smh
i got my instant locs about a week ago and they very thin. will they thicken over time ?
Yes, mine were very skinny at first. They thicken and frizz overtime. How many locs do you have because that makes a difference also?
@@ShaDeanaZ i got about 55
They should definitely thicken. I recommend not getting a retwist too often. Also massage your scalp with oil every other night before bed, this will help with new growth.
This was such a great video. Thanks! You just earned a new subscriber. ❤️
Thank You 💓
The person who did your instant locs wasn't a pro.
Thanks for sharing your experience
I want some dip n dots
Me too
Hi, I'm just starting, and I have short coils. What size and length are your second set of locs.
Hi, I have a video that shows the length and size my hair was when I first started so it was really short also. But overtime they do thicken up & of course grow longer. This is the video.
ruclips.net/video/uuS9uzkIxv8/видео.html
Love your crown thickness Queen
Thanks for sharing!
What part style do you have?
Hey, I have the brick pattern that basically looks like small squares.
Why didn’t you start with 2 strands to keep some of your length ?
Hey, the only reason I didn’t start with 2 strands is because they unravel and I couldn’t wear loc styles instantly. Also, I didn’t like how I looked with 2 strands. This is still a great method to start your loc journey though.
So I’m getting starter LOCS next week, can I switch to instant LOCS within 3 months
Hth❤️❤️
How long does the stiffness lasts more or less?
The stiffness doesn’t last long at all. Mine went away in a month. Some people said their stiffness went away quicker. It just depends on your hair.
if my hair ain’t lock yet should i still watch it ?
wash
Yes, still wash your hair even if it’s not loc’d just not too often. I recommend once every 2 weeks unless you are in sports then once a week or twice.
Thank you ✌🏾💚
Hii im new to RUclips as well here to support 🥰🥰
Thanks, I’ll check out your channel also 💓
Would getting longer love help with stiffness do you think it's stiff also because the length
Hey! I’m debating on getting instant locs and I’m just curious as to what grid pattern you have now?
👌🏿
Both my brothers & my dad have locs. Their frizz has most definitely reduced as their locs matured. Compared to my hair, this eventually gave their locs a neater look. Therefore, all locs don’t stay frizzy, it reduces. So I’ve seen both frizzy & neat locs, maybe it just depends on hair texture. An I embrace every stage of the locking process.
@@ShaDeanaZ Yeah Mines Not That Frizzy I Had Mines For Almost 2 Years

I chose the small brick pattern. Basically small square parts. Updated video coming soon 💓
