in the original novel "Ruyi _zhuan_ " the play they mention is expounded further, and TL;DR *it was basically the plot + foreshadowing of the entire drama*

-the original poem has a bad ending, while the play made up a happy ending because we live in a society
-in the novel, during the Wife Selection the play was performed, and Qingying was dissatisfied with the "forced" happy ending, and requested the actors to perform the original bad ending
-Hong'li was intrigued (despite Gao Xiyue's complaints that Qingying is weird), and running after Qingying, asks her why she thinks that way
-Qingying basically replies + argues that the man is an irresponsible douche and doesn't deserve the woman's forgiveness (no matter how much gaslighting he tries)
