  • Miss Elliot, I can bear this no longer. You pierce my soul. I'm half agony, half hope. Unjust I may have been. Weak and resentful I have been, but never inconstant. I offer myself to you again with a heart even more your own than when you almost broke it eight years ago. I have loved none but you. You alone have brought me to Bath. For you alone I think and plan. Have you not seen this?

    Wentworth and Anne..to be so undervalued, even resented by her sisters, largely ignored by her father, bullied by Lady Russell and her sister, Mary, small wonder she doubted and rejected the first proposal. No one to guide her and eight years of loneliness for both young lovers. But when Anne and Wentworth break through and their souls reach out for each other one last time, the glory of their love is not to be denied. True love is within their grasps and this time they reach for each other with love not to be denied. This time Wenthworth recognizes the value of his Anne and she digs deep and finds the courage to accept Wentworth, generous enough to forgive what his old resentments puts her through and accepts the brilliant life they have just won for each other. Bravo!

    I really like the fact that Sally Hawkins isn't a freaking tall and blonde top model. She's perfect for this role. She has a cute and innocent type of beauty, and that leaves place for the other qualities of her character, such as intelligence and sensibility. Great casting and acting job here.

      Also because a freaking tall and blonde top model wouldn't have been a true physical representation of Anne as she was not considered to be a beauty. In fact, the book (I believe) describes her as not considered attractive by society's standards at that time.

      @@aanon5716 i strongly disagree. Then again it's a matter of opinion. If your standard is only about general appearance then well, there's hardly anything left to say. Personally, I always find Sally a joy to watch, her acting has that natural charm, beauty and authenticity that makes every character she plays automatically compelling and intriguing to watch. Perhaps its not to your taste but thats no reason to fling that sort of comment around. Have at least some respect and spare us your unnecessary opinion.

    This is the finest version of Persuasion, and the letter / kiss scene at the end is superb. Jane Austen had a brilliant mind to create so much tension for Ann and the Captain and then the superb ending. I wonder what brilliant stories Jane Austen would have written had she not died so tragically young

    Many comments have been made regarding the drawn out kiss. I LOVE that whole scene, including the kiss. Wentworth got his heart ripped out once and now he is putting himself out there again. He wants her to come to him, to totally commit before he does so again. She understands. When she commits, MAN does he commit. Wentworth is all in.

      They couldn't say directly how they felt in polite society in those times. It was very taboo. So this is what it appears like. They had to find ways around it. I think this is why the tension and drama is so good. The best moments are the 1995 scene with the chair, when she grasps the chair the first time she sees him for years - but only the audience see it.

She has yearned for this moment and has never kissed anyone before. He is the first. He will not go to her, she must move to him - he has poured his heart out in that letter. She is totally in charge of their destiny.. She is overwhelmed. Its a beautiful moment of emotional intensity. The tear rolling down her face making it even more so.

    • @Kybeline
      @Kybeline 6 лет назад +1

      @James Douglas - lol, I was thinking the same. Probably the producer was friends with her family to cast her. He is a fine character, but she is a little plain duck. Besides, she's a poor actor. To run like a stupid goose is good enough for a servant, not for Miss Anne Eliot

    • @soledadferrer1325
      @soledadferrer1325 5 лет назад +2

      @@Kybeline that has nothing to do with her acting skills but with the script she had to follow (I don't like it either). Besides, casting a "plain" woman was right (although I think she's very pretty, she just has an awful hairdo) sine Anne was not supposed to be pretty.

    • @Kybeline
      @Kybeline 5 лет назад +2

      Jane Austen said that Anne was once very pretty, but her bloom has faded. Nonetheless it was such a kind of prettyness, which her cousin has noted, and also some other people - and of course in the end cpt. Wentworth has seen it as well. He noticed it immediately as Cousin Eliot looked at her on the cob in Limes. So it should be such a certain type of beauty with "style" and of the "gentile" kind.
      For me the best casting of an Austin novel is the 2005 "Pride and Prejudice". There, all main actors could perfectly act the characters which they had to. Best of all was Jane Bennet. She would have been a much better casting for this Anne Eliot as well. Just look at that woman Rosamund Pike in some other roles, then you see how she changed to embody Jane Bennet. She's made a fantastic job of her role!
      Further I detest cheap stereotype directing, when they put "running" to show utmost passion (the final scene), or munching some food to show superficiality - like Elisabeth in here does all the time. That's a bad fashion of our days' movies, no better than the exagerated theatrical gestures of the early cinema.
      But I have to tell that the guy Penry-Jones here in this movie acts his captain Wentworth very well - just as well as Ciaran Hinds does his one.

  • @JolPil

    "I will... and NOTHING, you may be sure, will ever persuade me otherwise." The way she says "and NOTHING" is Oscar level greatness of acting. When she says "and NOTHING" all of Annes pain comes out, pain over being persuaded to reject the love of her life, 8 years ago. She is determined, she will never betray love again. The way she says "and NOTHING" gets me everytime, tears run, I know that pain.

In the letter he admits when they met again he was mean, because he was still angry. So he knew, probably not the extent, but to a degree he was hurting her.
      That is NOT better, they both have thier own faults but that seems like pretty strong evidence that Darcy is the better man.

    Rupert Penry Jones is gorgeous and a good actor but Sally Hawkins is an acting giant in this role. People , women especially, say if only men like Captain Wentworth existed in our times. I think they do. They are few , very few, but they do exist. The problem is that women like Anne Elliott the way she was when she let the love of her life slip away through her fingers because she was PERSUADED by her relatives he was not appropriate for her, also do exist. Anne was lucky as hell. Wentworth waited and kept on waiting for her until SHE came to him and chased him down the street all while holding his letter of proposal in her hands. Persuasion is Austen's masterpiece in my opinion and it is STILL relevant. Amazing adaptation this one.

      Think it was to show her determination to not miss out on true love a second time. I loved the scene because prior to that she kept her feelings to herself. Do agree with you about the kiss though. He could have shown a lot more enthusiasm considering the lovely love letter he had just written to her.

One of my favourite moments is when she runs to the house he laughs at her reaction then gives her the most adoring look seeing her so happy. I think this is Austen’s most beautiful love story.

    It doesn’t matter what adaptation you watch because the books and those golden words Jane uses to describe characters and language being used gives one the feeling of being there. You can feel every heartbeat and heartache from the books. Everyone adapts movies in different ways because they perceive books in different ways. But this 2007 gem is stunning and yes I did watch the Netflix version and obviously they don’t compare, however the sentiment remains the same.

However, if you’ve never seen the 1995 version do yourself a favor and seek it out. I never understood why they bothered to shoot this version when we already had one that was absolutely sublime.

    Sally Hawkins makes such a great Anne Elliot. She does justice so well to Anne's gentleness and quiet strength of character. We know he wouldn't have kissed her in the street like that really but it's sweet. From an accuracy, sticking to the book point of view I prefer the 1995 version, but as characters I prefer this version of Anne and Captain Wentworth. In the '95 version they seem too old somehow. I do think both versions have Anne as a mousey character, but in some ways she is. She's spent her life being put down by her family and has bent to the whims of others without question. It's only in this moment that she does something she wants. I think RPJ does carry this scene, but I think Sally Hawkins captures Anne well. I love the kiss because there is that sense that he's not going to kiss her until he knows she wants him to, but she wants him to but can't be seen to be instigating it. The way they get there in the end, both of them knowing it’s what they both want, just sums up the story for me.
