🌸💗🌸I purchased “your” pattern…I’ve been catching up on all the videos on your channel since 1/1/2023…wow a lots happened I’m so proud of you sistren🌸 any’who…right so I have the pattern & think I want to do the eye of partridge instead, it’s a delight to know that substitutions are so easy with this pattern. Thank you for breaking the barrier about socks (it felt like the fun police) for so long and only made socks for little people (kids) …bless you Denise🌸💗🌸
Lovely! I have knit countless pairs of socks by now and I am still finding that sometimes I get them just right and sometimes not so, depending on the yarn and probably my mood when knitting them. I experiment with stitch counts and needle sizes, even decreases etc. So as a self-taught sock knitter I have found a lot just be trying and making mistakes. You give us a lot of food for thought. And your point about trial and error and no wasted time just resonates with me. You are a joy to watch a listen to. Thank you.
You are an exceptional teacher. I am surprised and delighted by how much I learned (and not for the first time when watching one of your videos)! Thank you so much!
Denise, how informative is this video. Thank you,! Thank you! Thank you! This is perfect timing!! I have watched many, many blogs and videos about knitting and I am finally going to knit my first pair of socks 🧦.
You took the words right out my mouth. 😁👍🏾. I too will be knitting my first pair of socks . Ms. Denise you are a godsend. 💖. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. Very informative and now I understand "gauge ".👍🏾👏🏾😁
You are so amazing, sharing your sock wisdom with us! Thank you so much! I am on my way to purchase some of your sock patterns and I'll be watching your tutorials. I've knitted socks for a while but love the depth of explanations you're providing. Thank you. xo
I'm completely new at knitting, managed my first project (a slouchy sweater) and just finished my first ever pair of socks! They are a little too big everywhere hahaha, but for a first try I didn't expect it all to be perfect. I'm now watching your videos and wow, so much tips/advice I can not wait to start with a new pair and learn from my mistakes. Thanks a lot for all your videos!
This is amazing! Couldn't have come at a better time. I am trying out knitting on 9inch circs and afterthought heels for the first time.... It was too tight...Turns out my gauge was off. Lol thank you for the great information!
Great info! I'm already glued to my seat for the upcoming classes in this series! From this one alone, I will have a better fitting sock. Thanks, Denise!!
Excellent tutorial! I've been playing around with my needle size & stitch count but I did not do the crucial measurements of guage, foot, ankle & heel. Also, I notice a difference in fit when I knit 75/25, 80/20 or 85/15 fiber blend.
Great video. The first pair of socks I knit were your Soxploration … I love them: a perfect fit. Thanks to great pattern and your videos to guide my journey. 🙏🏻❤️
5 star explanation of sock fitting! So glad I have found you. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise! Now I need to go watch more of your videos…
Thank you so much. All that was very interesting, especially the point about decreasing and increasing. I’m sure, actually I know I will refer to it many times. Roll on next week!
Hi Denise I just found you and I’m so happy that I did I watched so many videos about socks you are the best how you explain How informative is this video and valuable information thank you Denise I’m about to subscribe to your video thank you Gloria vella
I love your videos more tha than I can express. I have limited time to watch anything and I find myself gravitating to them however I'm still working on my gauge so no socks yet. Thank you so much. I am waiting for the book! which I will gladly pay for.
This is an amazing tutorial! You’re an exceptional teacher! There is a pattern I knit that I really really wanted to work fit-wise but they bunched up where the top of my foot and ankle meet. Thank you for solving the problem for me. I can’t wait to try the pattern again with the modifications you suggested (decreasing stitches over that area). I think everything you talked about is applicable to toe up socks as it is to top down socks but I’m wondering if you plan to have an episode about toe-up socks?
Wow Denise! This is one of the most knowledgeable Podcasts ever been done on Sock gageing. Eventhough difficult to explain at times nobody has made it so crystal clear as you have. Is it wise to change needle size after knitting the cuff Denise? I am sure that you will cover this at a later stage though. I really look forward to your follow ups. Thank you so much.
Wow, thank you so much Maria. I'm so glad it was helpful! Many patterns and knitters do change needle size after knitting the cuff but I don't ,unless it's a colorwork sock, and never had a problem with the fit.
I absolutely love your videos. I have made 4 single socks in my life with starting fresh each time working the math and the measurements only for the socks to always be lacking in actual negative ease even though the math is there! I cannot for the life of me figure out where I am going wrong. I am getting 9.9 stitch per inch. I have a 9” ball of my foot. So I round down to 91st/in , removing the 10% and I cast in for 72 stitches. And it is baggy. Every time. I want to love knitting socks as much as I love knitting everything else! Send help! Love from MN❤
HI Allison, Even though your numbers look right you may still need to drop down to 68 or 64 stitches. I know math is not suppose to lie but something is off somewhere.
I'm beyond thrilled that you're doing this series of videos. I will be measuring again for my next pair of socks just to double check things. I'm still sort of new to it all and loving every minute of learning new ideas. I think the biggest problem I have right now is socks sliding down. They don't feel too tight when I put them on at all. I'll be rechecking numbers and see if I can figure out what's up with that. Thanks ever so much for taking the time to share all this valuable information, Denise. I'm SO happy!!!!! 😃
Thank you so much. I am in the beginning stages of errors. I have several family members who wear size 14 shoes. My first and biggest error, assuming big feet translates to size large socks. Keep watching these videos, over and over, until you understand. It will save you a lot of time and frustration.
Ah, yes... knit, frog, knit, frog. A very long time ago, made a LOT of socks-Regia, Socka(no longer), + others. Last summer, got back into socks. WHOA!! Learned that the beautiful, SWmerino blend yarn is much thinner than the “old” yarn. Fast forward to the past few months: Lesson I learned = even tho I frogged, kept going Down in needle sizes, I FINALLY found the Sweet Spot that Fits my ankle and foot (ankles got ..ahem..larger ?!?!?). Now I have stitch counts for leg & foot for needle sizes US 0, 1, 1.5 and 2. As well as foot lengths. Wahoo! I also know if I change my toe from round/star to a wedge style, I need to adjust length, means I may have to rip back. But it’s okay! Once all those pieces of the puzzle are perfect, I know I can Zip along with most any pattern, stripes, ribbing. Don’t give up! Might be a slower process, but that Custom Fit Sock is truly Awesome! I’m going to love this series! Always new things to learn! Thank you!!
As always, informative and valuable information, Denise. I thoroughly enjoy your lessons and appreciate your time and effort in sharing your knowledge....thank you ❤
Iv had to cast on 72 sts bc where a patterned sock sits on my leg, however Im usually a 60st cast on. Also, there is a heel turn calculator online anyone can look up. I use that since the sts from patterns are to big for me.
Hi Lacie, WOW I had no idea there was such a thing was available online. I'm beyond excited and will add a link in the show notes. I will also credit you with sharing the resource. Thank you SO MUCH!! This is why I love having this space for people to come together and share!!! You really have made my day, week, month!!!
I have only ever finished one pair of socks for myself and love the beginning where you dive into how to apply gauge to fix some of the issues. I can't wait to cast on another pair using the tips from your new class! So true about practice! Thank you!!!
Thank you so much Denise for this awesome video. I have only knit two pairs of sock and I decided to do those at worsted weight. One of those was the rye sock by Tin Can Knits so I will definitely look at the rye light sock pattern. I jumped in encouraged by friends to join a kal for the i scream sock pattern. That pattern offered I think four sizes the largest being 9 inch foot circumference and i'm 10 inches. I went with the XL size (9 in) and cast on 80 stitches. I was thrilled that the ribbing at the top of my sock and as I continued down to the heel, which I watched your shadow wrap heel video first, actually go on and up my leg. They do look huge compared to store bought socks I purchased. I've now done a stitch count and I'm at 32 stitches and the designer is at 36 stitches on a 2.5 mm needle. I'm now thinking of just setting that sock aside and casting on 80 or 100 stitches in fingering weight yarn and do a in the round long gauge swatch using say a 3mm needle all the way down to a 2mm. I'm not a swatch knitter, I've no idea what my average gauge is on any weight yarn I knit with (awful isn't it :D ) --- Anyway a very long comment to say THANK YOU for all you share on your RUclips platform - it is truly appreciated. ❤️❤️❤️
This is great! I did the measurements on my great socks and not so great fitting socks, there was such a difference! As always, wonderful information presented in a way I understood. Thank-you.
Thank you for this tutorial. I am new to sock knitting I’m almost afraid to start again, but after listing to you I will pick it up. Your talk is very clear and inviting. Thanks for sharing.
I'm practicing socks with Patons Kroy (more cost effective while I'm learning). I'm on my 8th pair in a month. I'm getting 6 sts/inch, but Kroy is definitely thicker than my other 4-ply yarns. I'm having to go down to 48 sts on 2.5mm to make them fit. Now I know that I'm a loose knitter (on 9-inch circulars). My stitches are uniform and the fabric is nice, so I'm not sure if I need to go down a needle size or not. 🤔
I am in the same boat. Just finished my first socks with Kroy, and while they fit well (haven't worn them with shoes yet), I'm questioning wether the gauge I chose will be too loose. For reference, 48 stitches, 3.25mm 9" circulars (I'm a tight knitter), with a 7 stitch x 10 row per 1 inch gauge. She mentioned that 7 stitches per inch is potentially too loose, but this yarn is a bit thicker then most sock yarn, so I'm not sure how to translate the advice.
Love this video, filled with such great information. Thanks so much Denise for all the time, energy and patience you take to produce these awesome videos for us! I absolutely love you and watching your videos. 💕💖💕
Can you discuss how a sock should fit for those of us with high arches? I knit at 9st/in on size 1 and the stitches are fine except in front of the ankle bone where there is some distortion. Should they be this way or not, if not, how do you fix it?
Thanks, Denise, this is so helpful! I think adjusting the stitch count for the size difference between leg, ankle, and foot will make such a difference in my sock fit! I have an issue I'm wondering if you can help with. When I calculate what I should cast on for a cuff, using my gauge and even factoring in a generous negative ease (1 inch or even 15-20%), it still comes out too big. For example, my calf measurement is 11.5-12" but the circumference I ended up with on my last pair of socks to get the cuff to stay up at all measures 9.5". How can I plan for this? And any ideas why this might be the case? Does it come down to how I'm measuring (flexed vs. relaxed), or are my legs just squishy shape shifters? (I have heard our feet can be quite malleable.) Does anyone else have this problem?
IF you are watching this video, and have never knit socks before, there are two other great examples of garments that you want negative ease. Hats and mittens. These are both garments that don't work, if they are at 100% ease. They fall off. 🙂 Socks work the same way. Re: gauge-when do you need the rows per inch? The reason I ask, is that I tend to measure my sock as I knit for length. I don't do it by number of rounds. Maybe I should. 😊 Also, if you are knitting knee socks, and have larger calves, would you want to add another measurement for your calf at widest point?
Love the color of the pink short socks you showed. What yarn and color name are they? I have been enjoying your videos. I picked up sock knitting again after being frustrated with it 12 years ago. I really want it to work out for me this time around.
I'm so glad you like it but I'm so sorry I don't have the label anymore and can't remember the name. I do remember that it is by Into The Whirled yarn company.
Love this and know I will continually use it for reference. It's very timely now as I am in the process of decreasing in foot after finishing shadow wrap heel (foot and toe were not snug enough). I also wonder about toe shape in decreases. Is it always necessary to use a knit row in between the decrease rows? What would it look like if I didn't? This learning is so much fun! Thank you, Denise. BTW, I've made 5 pairs of socks using your pattern; my favorite is with Percolated yarn colorway. I am now trying a rolled top to make peds for garden shoes.
Hi Karen, If you do not knit a plain round between decrease rounds, the toe will be too shallow and will not fit properly or as deeply as you would like.
You are a real sock scientist :D Thank you for this great tutorial It's very helpful for beginners. I have a question about Shadow Wrap Short Row Heel; Is It possible to knit a boomerang heel by using this method?
Love, love your video on socks. I have learned so. Much from your videos. Can you make a video demonstrate how to measure a real foot.I hope you can understand what mean. What are important parts we should measure? Does it matter if we flat foot or have high arches? I have so many questions. Thank you for all you do. Believe it very helpful
This was very informative and helpful. I've been taking different pieces/elements from patterns I've enjoyed to try to make my perfect sock. For example, in currently working on a pair of DRK Everyday socks by Andrea Mowry but am using Kate Atherley's toe up barn toe for longer toes formula as that toe shape works the best for me. I'm not sure if I'm going to knit the Fleegle heel in the pattern or if I'm going to use the shadow wrap heel. I'm flat footed an tend to wear out the bottom of my heel so I reinforce them before I wash/wear
Hi Stacey, You the sock itself can be the swatch. 10 to 20 rounds will give you an accurate gauge. Cast on using the magic loop method and start knitting, then measure. Sometimes things seem a bit harder than they actually are.
Jeesh did I need to hear that. "The more socks you knit, the better you will get" Just made a pair of socks, and one is smaller than the other. Felt defeeted(?) hahahah
I'm sorry, but I have to ask, what brand of needles are you using in the sock tutorials. I have many different brands but those tips look so long. I would love to have some
I’ve been so disgusted with my sock knitting related to fit. This video is the most helpful of anything I have seen. I quit knitting socks for quite a while because of my not wanting to make another pair for myself that doesn’t fit. You’ve given me hope to try again. Thanks so much for the excellent explanation. Love your videos.
I’m so so happy to hear that the tutorial was so helpful to you. Just remember to take your time. Take notes on what you’re doing and relax and enjoy the process!!

Hello from Mounds Illinois. Great information. Thanks!
Thank you, Denise for much needed in-depth sock gauge. After several knitted socks I wanted to twit them to fit better.
Thanks so much for all you videos🧶

yay!!!!!! I am so loving sock knitting and it is all thanks to you
Your video is very informative and you are very knowledgeable. I didn’t realize you could measure your socks and make a custom fit one.
Great explanation. Love the part about decrease for larger calves like mine. Makes all kinds of sense
Great information!
Great info! I'm already glued to my seat for the upcoming classes in this series! From this one alone, I will have a better fitting sock. Thanks, Denise!!
This was great! Thank you. I will definitely revisit this video when I cast on my next pair of socks. 😀
Love that little jingle at the start of the video
Excellent tutorial! I've been playing around with my needle size & stitch count but I did not do the crucial measurements of guage, foot, ankle & heel. Also, I notice a difference in fit when I knit 75/25, 80/20 or 85/15 fiber blend.
Glad it was helpful!
My first class and I love it
I’m so happy to hear that!!!
Great video. The first pair of socks I knit were your Soxploration … I love them: a perfect fit. Thanks to great pattern and your videos to guide my journey. 🙏🏻❤️

Thank you Denise 😊 I am just starting to knit socks. Your video is very informative.
OMG you explained that so well, I now feel confident to customize the fit of the sock I'm making to the person they're to fit!!
Thanks great info. I did find the book at my library😀. Checked it out right away. Can’t wait to dig into it.
So many ah ha moments in this video! I purchased the book and will try this on my next socks!!! Amazing 👏 thank you so much!!! 💗

Yes everything I covered in the video is applicable to toe up socks as well.
Thank you Denise. This was very helpful.

Wow, great video. Just last night I was pondering how to fix the fit of my socks. This video is so clear and easy to understand. Thank you.

Thank you for this tutorial. I am new to sock knitting I’m almost afraid to start again, but after listing to you I will pick it up. Your talk is very clear and inviting. Thanks for sharing.
You can do it Phyllis!!!
I'm practicing socks with Patons Kroy (more cost effective while I'm learning). I'm on my 8th pair in a month. I'm getting 6 sts/inch, but Kroy is definitely thicker than my other 4-ply yarns.
Thank you so much Dieanna!!
Can you discuss how a sock should fit for those of us with high arches? I knit at 9st/in on size 1 and the stitches are fine except in front of the ankle bone where there is some distortion. Should they be this way or not, if not, how do you fix it?
Yes, I will be discussing high arches in an upcoming episode.
You're right Sheryl. Than you so much for sharing! And hopefully people are watching this video.
Hi Karen,
If you do not knit a plain round between decrease rounds, the toe will be too shallow and will not fit properly or as deeply as you would like.
You are a real sock scientist :D Thank you for this great tutorial It's very helpful for beginners.
I have a question about Shadow Wrap Short Row Heel; Is It possible to knit a boomerang heel by using this method?
Truth be told, I've never tried it so I can't give a definite answer. It may be possible. I would search here on RUclips.
I will try to add this to my list of tutorials.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it Kathryn. Having so many options to knit socks is all part of the wonder and joy of knitting in general. Enjoy!!
Hi there, how to do make a swatch for a sock when using magic loop?
Hi Stacey,
You the sock itself can be the swatch. 10 to 20 rounds will give you an accurate gauge. Cast on using the magic loop method and start knitting, then measure. Sometimes things seem a bit harder than they actually are.
Another great video! When you measure your foot, do you have weight on it? AKA standing on it?
Yes, always measure your foot while standing.
Jeesh did I need to hear that. "The more socks you knit, the better you will get" Just made a pair of socks, and one is smaller than the other. Felt defeeted(?) hahahah
I like what you did there..."defeeted"!!!
I'm sorry, but I have to ask, what brand of needles are you using in the sock tutorials. I have many different brands but those tips look so long. I would love to have some
Hi Laurie,
I'm not using any knitting needles in this tutorial only a clover tapestry needle. Is that what you are referring to?
I’ve been so disgusted with my sock knitting related to fit. This video is the most helpful of anything I have seen. I quit knitting socks for quite a while because of my not wanting to make another pair for myself that doesn’t fit. You’ve given me hope to try again. Thanks so much for the excellent explanation. Love your videos.
I’m so so happy to hear that the tutorial was so helpful to you. Just remember to take your time. Take notes on what you’re doing and relax and enjoy the process!!
I have to put in extra rows in the toes for my son because he has abnormal long toes lol
Knowing there is a tool to help with checking gauge makes me less ornery about refusing to do so. 🤪😬
As you get older you don’t necessarily want negative ease. 😆. Just a thought to consider
Very true...lol!
Too tight and too loose are both awful. I just cast on and hope for the best.😣😣😣😣
Good info but I'm a straight beginner and this is my first pair of socks so you lost me with all the info..
Hi Sybil, you might want to start with my No Fear Sock Knitting class.
