  • Learn how to train your fingers to be flexible for the best and smoothest bow changes possible. Your fingers need to be comfortably together rather than spread for lessened tension. The tip of your pinky should be on top of the stick. Practice while applying more pressure than usual to develop the timing and correct feeling. Exaggerate the movement when working on this technique so that the movement will come by itself after much practice. Your right elbow should lead the motion. Practice this exercise with a pencil or other appropriate object while doing other things for maximum practice time. This and many more tutorials available at fiddlerman.com

In spite of being a regular RUclips consumer, I never post comments. This is a first for me. :) But I just wanted to say thank you for all of your great videos. I've been playing for 15 years, but haven't taken lessons or practiced consistently for the last 7. And I've just begun to try and work on little aspects of my technique that I haven't focused on in a long time, including really smoothing out my bow changes. Your technique has really helped me. I don't think I ever was shown the importance of finger movement in addition to fluidity in the wrist for making smooth transitions. So, bottom line, I'm SUPER excited to continue practicing this. THANKS! Your playing inspires me. :D

It's not all that easy. One day it'll just come to you. Don't give up. Make a conscious effort on every bow change 5 minutes before every practice session..... Hope you get it soon. :)

You can do this exercise even when watching tv with a pencil or at the dinner table with your fork or at an office etc....Even if you can't do the bow change, you can probably do the pull down bow and pull up bow. The bow change will get better later on it's own if you get the proper grip. Join our forum at Fiddlerman.com/forum and post a video of yourself so that I can better analyze what you are doing to give better tips. :)

+Jub Joy If your pinky keeps falling off, I would see a doctor. ;) LOL
Try applying pressure to the left side of the finger. Also, there are products designed to get you used to keeping the pinky in the right spot. I've even seen do it yourself aides such as a tube cut to fit over the frog and secure your pinky.
