This reads like a novel, sorry in advance...
I'm wondering... you didn't mention whether you've actually ever seen a neurologist for a sleep study? You go to a sleep lab for the night, they hook you up to a computer, and you (try to) go to sleep while it measures brain waves, breathing patterns, muscle spasms, etc...
I was sleeping, but only the lightest level. I was wired when I was awake, started having panic attacks in my sleep, hallucinating when I was awake, all of that...
Turns out I quit breathing every 90 seconds when I sleep; my throat relaxes so much it collapses and blocks my airway. Not saying that's where you're coming from, there are a number of issues they can diagnose, but maybe they could give you another insight about how your brain is keeping you awake. It may not all be in your mind, though that is always a contributor... anyway, now I have a machine that made a HUGE difference. I sleep with a mask and machine that just keeps my airway from collapsing. I still don't always sleep a lot, but I get through any anxious parts with some prayer, reading, and guided meditations for sleep I found on RUclips that have been useful. Look some up and experiment for yourself, they are kinda fun! 🙂 Keep reading, too. I'm averaging five hours of GOOD sleep, and no more hallucinations ... SO worth it!
Prayers that you continue to improve, 'cuz not sleeping at all is a living nightmare!

Dearest, Watching you is like watching myself 30 odd years ago. I wished I could give you a hug. I can't read all of your comments so I might be suggesting something that somebody else already has. I too have suffered with insomnia and anxiety/panic for about 35 years. It all started when I lived in L.A. and had a very stressful job as a Fashion Designer. I survived on coffee, plain baked potatoes and cigarettes. It came to a terrible head and I ended up in a psych ward. Long story short, I became Agoraphobic, had to move back home to my parents house in the Bay Area and lost my job. My journey was intense but I made it through the other side. I have done every therapy that exists, I have taken different medication for all of these years and I have read every book that was ever written. Knowing what I know, I would confidently suggest to you 2 things (although it does sound like that book is really helping you) I would suggest finding a specialist in the field of PTSD who is adept at EMDR therapy and also a mild dose of Beta-Blockers. A non addictive medication that will sort of slow down the adrenaline and heart rate so that you can breath easier and your mind is more amiable to listening to you instead of running you. This sleep deprivation in my heart of hearts tells me that there was something building up in you that chose to hit a crescendo on that trip abroad. I experienced the exact same thing. I too am a creative so I understand the journey. I know live in my native Dublin Ireland and am living a much gentler life in a softer place. I still create but the difference is I have the skill set to see myself going into a touch space and know what to do about it. Do I fall off the peace wagon from time to time, sure, but I know how to get back up again with little to no scars. I'm sending you huge love from Ireland and if you ever feel like coming to Ireland, you have a friend!! XOX Christine

Delayed sleep phase disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and agoraphobia for me. Twenty years ago I had to quit college and my job and move back home because everything hit that crescendo and I just couldn't function on my own anymore. Thankfully I've had an amazing psychiatrist and a couple of years ago my therapist started doing EMDR with me.
Part of me still mourns the person I used to be and the plans I'd made but there have been so many unexpected joys along this journey. I still get frustrated about having to adapt my life to my disabilities but it's helped me realize what is truly important. I like to think I'm a better person because of what I've been through and it's given me the experience and empathy to support others who are struggling.
Everything you said is resonating with me. I love how you describe living a gentler life in Dublin. I'm Texan and fell in love with an Englishman almost five years ago. Life has postponed our plans a bit but I'll be moving over there to join him in another year or so. I like to tease him that the only thing I love more than him is the English weather 😉
Wishing you the best from across the pond and thank you so much for sharing your experiences! I felt so alone for so long. Much as I hate discovering how many wonderful people have experienced similar struggles it eases my heart and mind every time I'm reminded that they don't define us or keep us from finding happiness and joy, however it may manifest itself. ♥️

@@inthechairwithcloochy8102 :Zen hugs: Thank you so much! I'll be sending warm thoughts and wishes to you too. My pups are always happy to pass along virtual cuddles as well 😉
I feel like my struggles have opened me up to even greater blessings. It's brought me closer to my family, particularly my mother. When she developed a terrible infection that led to a stroke two years ago I was already here and have been able to repay her kindness and sacrifices by caring for her in turn. I found ways to eventually finish my degree and even got to work towards my Master's in a field I'm passionate about. I discovered that my anxiety doesn't mind public speaking (oh the irony!) so I spent a number of years giving presentations on mental health disabilities and service dogs. I even had a small petsitting service until recently so I was able to help financially by getting paid for something I would gladly have done for free! My biggest regret was that I never had the opportunity (or health) to have children of my own. Then I fell in love with someone who not only loves me flaws and all but has two wonderful kids of his own. I get to be there and help love and support them as they grow into the most wonderful kind of adults.
And because of the often difficult road I've traveled I know exactly how precious each of these things is. There will always be hard times but I'm lucky to have the experience and support to know how to weather them. That's why there's a comfortable chair on my back porch with a dog bed beside it, overlooking our yard where the cicadas sing, the hummingbirds visit, and the squirrels try to taunt my pups into chasing them! I prefer my tea to be sweet and iced, though 😉 It may not be the life I'd planned but it brings me a quiet kind of joy and contentment that I wish more people could experience. Looking back now I can't imagine changing the experiences that have brought me here. And if you're ever in Texas, the sweet tea is on me!

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for posting!!! Twelve years ago I was in a really bad car wreck and sustained a closed head injury and it turned my life UP...SIDE...DOWN!!! It changed my personality, my ability to concentrate so much that I had to retire at only 36!!! And that is when mania and insomnia started. It TRULY does affect relationships and people who've not experienced find it silly, frustrating and honestly think that we are doing it on purpose. I don't stay over at others because I also may be up all night pacing. Like you I've seen SIX therapists and psychiatrists...And unfortunately was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder quite late in life...It was explained that the wreck probably triggered the chemical balance in my brain to go haywire. I don't sleep deeply or achieve REM sleep unless I am medicated...I don't like taking meds, but I have a farm to run and a family, so....BUT....Something my current therapist told me and I TOTALLY believe it is that right brained creative minds and perfectionists can often experience insomnia because they have difficulty shutting down things like projects, ideas, job performances. I'm definitely right brained and a perfectionist and the latter became much stronger after my head injury.
Thanks for letting me carry on...We love you, Drew. Thank you for being YOU, all parts of YOU....From the Country Southern Belle in North Carolina!!!

Yeah, I went through chronic insomnia/depression for years after moving from New Zealand to the US (so a complete-time change/season change shift) and one of the first things my drs would get a handle on when I was having issues was my sleep. 1-2 missed nights was ok but after that, I'd take Ambien to make sure it didn't spiral. I'd take anti-depressants that had a sedating effect for insomnia and that helped too for me. Eventually, I was able to wean off everything and now have a very natural sleep cycle.
Sometimes you need the meds to reset yourself back to base.

Many people have health problems that are helped by lifelong medication. Why not the same for "mental" health problems - most originate in brain chemistry. We are lucky to live in a time when meds [even when imperfect] are available.

Hey Drew I hope that you’re going to see my response. 🤞🏼 I’m a psychology student and at my internship we work with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Awesome that you’re working on your sleep and sleep hygiene, but don't underestimate the impact of your thoughts either. The ‘bizarre’ circle you talk about in your video is not bizarre at all! We have a stress system in our body, the fight-flight system and when you think that you’re going to get addicted to medication or that you won't sleep again at night, this system is activated and stress hormones (neurotransmitters) are released in our body (adrenaline and cortisol). These stress hormones cause many changes in our body such as increased heart rate, increased breathing, tension in your mucles,.... They also cause our body to be alert and ready to fight, flight or freeze from danger or threats (this can include thoughts like "I'm not going to be able to sleep tonight."). When these stress hormones are released and our bodies are alert to danger or threats, it makes sense that you can’t sleep. For example, if a tiger is chasing you, you’re not going to sleep, you are going to fight, flight or freeze to survive. And the 'bizarre' circle you talk about in your video is the vicious cycle of fear (and thoughts): when you wake up in the morning and you think “I, once again, didn’t sleep well” then your fight-flight system gets activated and the stress hormones are released + changes happen in your body. If you then notice these changes and/or think during the day 'I'm not going to sleep well again this night', then even more stress hormones are released in your body. So stress and anxiety have an influence on your thoughts, but your thoughts also have an influence on stress and anxiety (and can increase stress and anxiety). It’s very important to break that cycle with exposure therapy with a behavioral therapist. That way you can work on your anxiety next to working on your sleep. Good luck and thank you so much for sharing!! 🥰💛 (I’m sorry if I made some mistakes, English isn’t my mother language)

Drew! When you said “If you look back at your life before, you’re like ‘Wow I had such an amazing life’ and you’re always in this state of wow I’m not living my life like I used to and I don’t know how to get back there. If just feels very hopeless” I teared up. I have developed anxiety and I suspect depression caused by the anxiety in the last few years. I used to be such a positive happy free spirited person and sometimes I don’t recognize myself now that I live with fear, worry, negative thoughts, sadness and sometimes anger. I mourn and miss who I used to be and I don’t feel like ME. I don’t even know how to be that person anymore or how I was able to be her before. I recently started talking to a therapist and expressed this exact feeling to her, we are working on getting me there. Talking to a therapist really helps, it can take a lot of time, not just a few sessions to see real progress but it’s worth it if we stick with it. Therapy alone (without medication) is a game changer. I wish you lots of health both physical and mental. Thank you for opening up about mental illness.

We've come such a long way with anxieties being talked about. When I started getting panic attacks in the 80's, I was in my mid 20's. I had no idea what was happening to me. I literally thought I was going crazy. I talked to no one about it. I felt so much shame about my condition. It went on for years before I was told what was going on after I ended up in the ER one day. It was such a relief to know there was a name for it and that it was common and maneagable. BREATHING has helped tremendously, especially for sleeping, it works. My suggestion to you or anyone is to find an App that will help you reconnect to your breath ( I know it sounds boring) but it helps with anxiety and insomnia.

Mental health professional here: "Everything psychological is biological" is the mantra and what therapists learn in uni. This can also help people be okay with taking meds. Remember if you had diabetes you would take your meds to thrive. Mental health is physical health (it's all the same system).
Perhaps try different types of therapy and dietary things. Like Functional medicine (a functional doctor will look at your entire body- usually gut health can help with cortisol levels and stress management). Also try CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) and my favorite Art Therapy.
It is definitely wild how our brains can pick one thing to make us feel nuts over. You couldn't have imagined a trip to Europe would cause a long lasting disorder. We can't predict what will set off any mental/physical illness. Just know that you are not alone and you are not crazy. It's just the body doing what it does (trying to keep you safe even though its out of wack).
Meds can help your body feel more stable. There are behavioral and dietary things you can do the help manage your anxiety. However, there are medical benefits to medicines if the behavioral and dietary things don't help enough. It's all about quality of life. Again using the diabetes example, yes you can eat healthy and exercise and still need meds to regulate your levels. No stigma attached so don't feel any type of way if you need meds to help regulate your levels (with mental illness). It's all hormones and neurotransmitters so yeah.
Keep on your healing journey. Reach out and get support when you need it. There are always people some where ready and willing to help. There are so many behavioral tricks and nutritional habits and therapies to try. So best of luck! You will be fine.
I had a client, a teen with Schizophrenia, who was struggling. I had to really impress upon her the reality that mental illness can be chronic and a life long journey. That they may not have a cure, and yet people are able to manage them and create a beautiful life. Mental illness doesn't define you. It's not who you are. It's just a part of you. Like with any illness, you learn to manage the symptoms and create a life. And when it's too much to handle you reach out for support (your support systems and professionals). There are tons of hotlines and support groups you can go to if money is an issue (which is an issue for most of us lol).
Best of luck to everyone! The past 2 years have been um... something. So if your mental health is struggling, be compassionate with yourself. We all have been through the ringer. The entire world 🌎 is struggling/healing. We are all just doing the best we can with what we have.
    -Kristy

I totally agree about the medication. People have to realize that the brain is an organ, just like the liver or the pancreas. Nobody is ashamed or shy to treat their liver, it should not be any different for the brain! And it is nobody else business if you take meds, so don't tell because so many people still don't understand the reality of mental health. Meds do work!

I just pray for rest, peace and sleep for you and all the others that go through the same. When you really can't take it, just know that you can always call out to Jesus. He helped me in my darkest moments and He will do the same for you. Sending love. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Hey Drew, just a quick comment- please don't be afraid to take an SSRI. I had insomnia and anxiety for about 3 months, got prescribed Paxil and have been on it for 20 years because I sleep great, have no side effects and it completely took away my anxiety. We are lucky to live in an age with anti depressants so don't freak out about taking them. You will look back and not believe you waited and suffered so long. If, for some reason you don't like what you are prescribed, you can always stop or transition to a different one.

I also would like to comment on how medications have helped me. I’ve dealt with some insomnia, though more as a result from my anxiety and not the other way around as it seems to be in your situation. I’ve been in medication for the better part of a decade now to treat my anxiety and have been grateful for the help it’s given me. I was very hesitant to take medication for fear of addiction or because I felt it was an admittance of a weakness i couldn’t overcome on my own. What helped me with through those challenges was changing my mindset a bit; I just felt like even if I was showing weakness by taking medications, life is so worth giving it a shot. I would essentially tell myself: you deserve happiness so much more than the pride that may come from not needing to rely on a medicine. I really relate to that feeling you mentioned about missing life before mental illness, and it has been so incredible being able to recover and experience those feelings again (I.e. peace of mind, mental space to focus on living life more fully and pursue my passions). I know the anxiety around taking medications for you won’t be overcome by reading a person’s comment on the internet, but I hope this perspective has helped a bit. If nothing else I would recommend that you bring up those fears of addiction with the doctors you’re meeting with. All medications have been studied and will have information about the likelihood of getting addicted to something, so they can guide you to which ones work best. You have so much joy and light to share with the world and with yourself, and other people need that light so much. If you don’t do it for you, do it for those around you ❤️

Just a disclaimer, a bad reaction to a SSRI caused insomnia similar to Drew's. A year later, I'm still dealing with it-- along with chronic hair loss, a chronic stress response. I dont think it's going away. Medication is great for some, but not for all.

I’m glad you opened up!! It’s crazy how many different things humans can struggle with, and yet you’re NEVER the only one experiencing it. I’ve never had chronic insomnia, but when I started going on medication for ADHD (which was life changing, in a positive way), it definitely disrupted my sleep permanently. I’m lucky to be able to sleep well lots of nights, but sometimes I can’t at ALL and I feel so terrible and restless and when I do finally fall asleep I have these vivid as hell, terrifying dreams. It’s not fun. But I’m so glad you’re taking some time off and that you found a book that’s giving you hope! I struggled for 6 years with nausea and stomach problems and legit thought I’d suffer the rest of my life, but I didn’t give up and finally finally found answers. You will too! Xoxo

YES Drew!! I’ve been through sleep anxiety before too in my early 20s. (I’m 28 now) i used to stress myself out if I didn’t get enough sleep. I got into a horrible cycle too and wouldn’t sleep for days. It would keep me from seeing friends, traveling, working, etc. The problem with people like us is that we turn everything into a job in our heads and we think everything needs to be perfect. No one is perfect and not every night of sleep is going to be perfect and that is OK! Anxiety is only fear and anyone can overcome a fear. Your body has not forgotten how to sleep. You just need to overcome your fear of sleep and peaceful sleep will come naturally. I know you can do it because I did! If I did, you definitely can too! 💕
Also, looking back on happier days can feel so hard when you’re going through a tough time like this. I use to compare myself to “the old me” and wonder how I got to the point I was at. Just know that happy days are ahead of you too. You’re growing as a person and sometimes you have to go through the growing pains to get yourself there! You’re gonna make it out of this and it’s gonna make you so much better in the end!
    Sending you love!

I’ve suffered from chronic pain and other health issues for over 25 years which has caused major depression, insomnia and anxiety! I completely understand! Everyday is a struggle! Sleep is so important and if you don’t get enough, your body starts breaking down! I’m the same way when it comes to medication but sometimes I have no choice but to take it in order to get at least a couple of hours and then I feel a little better! Depression is a hell of a struggle to overcome because the challenge of us working learned tools is so real, when we have to talk ourselves into getting up and out. I just pray that your staying in bed so long doesn't turn into a phobia on leaving your home. My dad for me, had been my SUPERHERO for so long, it was a challenge watching him change into vincible when, for me, he had been invincible for SO LONG. Love, thoughts and prayers for joyful days, where you can find ways to celebrate his passions, joys and loves outdoors or even in the kitchen, feeling embraced by his love and humor💝

I imagine its an anxious time while you are trying to take care of yourself & honoring your work commitment to those you work with, as well as your own financial responsibilities. Excited to see your "interior work and design" make the greatest impact of all for you, whatever it is!

Wow. My respects to you. This has been the best thing you have done so far. I love everything you do, but having a person at home that has so many problems with anxiety and its derivatives, it is encouraging to see you trying to overcome your struggles and give us so much joy with your designs and personality. You bring me hope. And I hope we bring you love and support on your well deserved hiatus. Good luck to you and don't give up.

I feel so proud of you for following your integrity and finding a solution that is starting to help you. This was an honorable video to watch and even while you're going thru this you were positive about it, which says so much about how amazing you are. I wish you the best on your sleep journey

Thank you for your openness. I struggle too, but with different mental health issues, and many people assume that just because you're 'high functioning' that everything is wonderful. Your content is such an encouragement and inspiration to me, and I actually use it as a pick-me-up when I'm feeling low, and to get inspired to get out of my head and go make something (anything!). I'm grateful for what you have added to my life, and I'm so happy to at least send my encouragement to you to take your time, and make steps in the right direction in your own life. So thankful for this wee digital family! Take care, much love.

Drew!! I’m so glad you are finding hope in the book and recent mind shifts! I’ve gone through something similar recently and all I’ve got to say is to TRUST that instinct! It isn’t lying to you! I’ve had so many pivotal moments on my journey where I said “huh, never thought of that before” or “never thought about it in this way before” and it didn’t change me over night, but it gave me the stepping stone I needed that led to the next “aha” moment. It’s such a journey and I know you are on your right path! Come back whenever you are ready and your community will be here to support you!

Wishing you some peace. Be kind to yourself and give yourself a pass. I've had really bad sleep issues all my life. There was a point where I was sleeping every other day... you're describing a constant state of stress and anxiety. ISTDP-based therapy has helped me. I'm also going to check out that book! Sending you so much healing energy. Be well, dear. 💜💜💜

Thank you for sharing, I’m a mom with a son who has struggled with mental health and sleep is always a trigger for other things ex: your anxiety going to 100 with no sleep. Everyone’s path is different for finding their peace but don’t underestimate the power of the right meds. Either. You said it your anxiety stops u. I’m all for what u r doing seeking your journey. So proud of you and oh btw your room is freaking gorgeous in this! Take your time we are here for you😘😘
