Today’s video is a very exciting one! Since posting my empty house tour, I received so many comments and messages about how the light fixtures in the home are probably worth a lot of $$$. I tried to do some research on my own but decided to bring in the expert of all experts to help appraise them. Dr. Lori is an appraiser of antiques, collectibles and fine art. She’s basically called the Ph.D. antiques appraiser! I couldn’t believe what some of the light fixtures were worth!! Which fixture is your favorite?

Drew, retired museum curator here. Consider a Fine Arts insurance policy on these valuable lighting fixtures. My museums worked with the Huntington Block agency with Cigna coverage. A fine arts agency is much more knowledgeable and aware of the issues that properly insuring objects like these entail than a standard homeowners insurance underwriter with scheduled items of particular value. Insurance is not just about premiums, but also about service.

Very good advice, he might want to contact the L.A. County Museum research department or the Los Angeles Historical Society as well, I would not be surprised if they don't already have some information about this house. The quality and expense of the fixtures in this house, the original owners might have had other fine art pieces (paintings and small sculptures0 that were donated to the museum.

I bet the owner was a European transplant or lover of European style and they lived in this house all their lives and then it transferred to a child. I've visited some elderly people (part of my job in Aged Care) who live in houses that haven't been updated since the 20s to 50s and many times it's an unmarried daughter or son who lived with their parents, looked after them when they aged, and inherited the house. Most of them don't feel the need or desire to remodel as it's comfortable to them, or feel it's an insult to the parents.

I'm thinking most of the fixtures arrived much later than when the house was new. Some of chandeliers hang way too low / seem designed for higher ceilings. Reaching up and touching a chandelier, or banging your head on one - I don't think that would happen back then. And I can't believe that the Murano grapes chandelier would have originally hung so very close to the sconces - this looks like the result of a collector running out of space (been there, done that!).

Insurance value is different from “worth value.” The “replacement” value of these antique pieces needs, as suggested, Fine Arts specialists. If you remove those items you change the character of the house. The house in it‘s whole is an antique, rip of the tiles, woodwork, original flooring, lights the house will loose much of the value, more as selling single parts one by one. Here it would be forbidden and put under the historic preservation regulation because the house represents a time period perfectly. If you don‘t like Art Deco, go buy a house from another time period. I look at this house and my heart bleeds. I am really afraid of the changes it will experience by thoughtless home owners.

Yes, be sure to get the rugs appraised. I’ve no idea what they are, but… if they’re authentic Persian, and depending on the region and the maker, they, too, could be worth a fortune. Qom, Tabriz, & Kerman are a few of the best rug making regions. Rugs in the Persian style aka copies from Pakistan, India, & Afghanistan are less valuable. Wool, especially Kork wool, is used in better rugs for common areas with higher foot traffic. Wool with Cotton edging is common. When you see weaving next to the rug’s edge, then fringe, it’s typically is found on higher quality Persian rugs. Silk rugs are used in areas with minimal foot traffic. The maker of the best rugs signs his or her rugs in the border on the short end of the rug. FYI. the Carpet Museum of Iran in Tehran displays carpets worth millions of dollars. Since you’re in LA, you have access to the Getty and other museums so it shouldn’t be hard to find an expert in Persian carpets! Even if your carpets aren’t Persian, they’re likely vintage and beautiful. Lucky you!
