Hi Israeli EDC, the Sportsman has the lowest weight cost per function of any 84 mm to 91 mm Victorinox EDC at 3.7 g per function (52.1 g per 14 functions). If you pimp it out with the mini-screwdriver and pin, the additional weight cost is just 0.6 grams, driving the cost per function down to 3.3 g, which is spectacular. You might think the Compact is the next best choice (64.5 g, 15 functions, 4.3 grams per function), but you'd be wrong. The Evolution 10 or EvoGrip 10 (Delemont line, old Wenger) clocks in at 3.9 g per function, and is essentially the Wenger (or Delemont) version of the Sportsman/Assistant. I must have the scissors, so I carry either the Compact or the Wenger/Delemont equivalent, which is the Evolution 14. The Evo 14 is 74.5 g, so the cost is 10 g over the Compact (making the cost 5.0 g per function), but it has the Wenger scissors, which I prefer, and a full nail file, compared to the Compact with a hard-to-use half-file on the back of the parcel hook. But the Evo 14 also gets rid of the almost useless parcel hook, replacing it with the reamer/awl/sewing eye. The parcel hook is nearly useless, and its main function--pulling shoe laces tight--is not useful to me, since I use 550 paracord to lace up my boots (jungle boots in summer, Danner RATs in winter) and the parcel hook doesn't have the diameter needed to securely grab the paracord. I find the Evo 14 tool set just about optimal for EDC, so that's what I carry, at least in the office. If I'm out and about on days off, I carry a Classic in my shirt pocket and a Ranger on my belt. If I'm hiking, I carry the Handyman, and I attach the Hercules to my belt for camping and backpacking. Yes, the Hercules is heavy, but I use that saw on just about every camping trip, and I find it about twice as fast as the little saw on the Huntsman or Handyman. You probably know already that you don't need Plus scales to add the pin to your Sportsman (for some bizarre reason my Sportsman came with plus scales, so I've got the pen, too!), but if not, just check out Felix Immler's video on how to do it--takes about 3 minutes. Cheers!

The Waiter would like a word… Adding a pen and a mini screwdriver puts it at 36g for 12 functions for a total of 3.0g per function. Put some respect on its name! 😂

Shabbat Shalom dude. Another great review. Your content and video quality is excellent. I have been stuck on the climber as my edc knife for some time but I really want to branch out and give some other models a try. Have an excellent day!

Glad to hear you enjoy my videos.
My "Dream Victorinox" is practically the Climber with a nail file instead of the small blade, so yeah, I completely understand the appeal 😉
I truly hope Victorinox will bring out their new "Companion" model in a red Cellidor version later this year 🌷

    Shalom brother 👊
Nice video, I also really enjoy the Sportsman, which I've just reviewed a few weeks ago, myself - it is my new fav Cellidor 84mm!
The Cadet is an awesome EDC too - great comparison my friend, I also use the Compact.
I think, you will like the new Victorinox Companion, which comes out later this year in Cellidor. A cross, between the Compact & Sportsman, perhaps... with a package opener! 😉

Hi Gus! Great having you over again 😉
Your video was fantastic! I think I commented on it, if I'm not mistaken ❤️
I wasn't aware that the new Companion is coming out in a cellidor version later this year, that's wonderful, I almost ordered one in the current wood scales thinking I can swap them with some regular red cellidor once I get the knife 😍

I got my first sportsman at the end of the 80's (at age 8 or 9 i think). And mine was an economy model (as i have learned last year). It didn't have the key chain ring and the scale tools. I still have it, and i carried it a long time. (During engineering school i carried a 74mm model, i think it's called executive. The one with the orange peeler tool) But after school, through my conscript time and for several years at work i carried my original 80's sportsman.
Then the corkscrew would stay folded in anymore (played with it too often i think)
So i bought a new sportsman again. And i bought another economy line one. This time it had a little darker scales that are nylon (reinforced?).
They do fare better with scratches as they have a texture anyways. (But i am not aware that Victorinox sells the nylon scales anymore.)
Later i bought the little corkscrew screwdriver because at the age of 24 i started needing glasses and it has come in handy a number of times...)
And that exact sportsman i still carry to this day.
Both of my sportsmans have the nailfile you showed on your cadet. And i have to say, i prefer that form of nail file. (different people have different tastes)
Honestly i don't really miss the scissors.
I don't drink, so my bottle opener and corkscrew have gotten many uses over the decades, but seldom to actualy open bottles ;-).
And i have opened cans with its can opener. I do prefer the Victorinox one over the Leatherman/Wenger one (and the one we got issued as it was the same type as those) Mostly during conscript time, because at home or at work there's a kitchen with a comfortable kitchen can opener.
So when the pull tab breakes off, i tend to use a normal can opener unless there is none.
I work in engineering and so to me, a swiss army knife or any multitool for that matter is " the best tool if the actual correct tool is not available". -> when there is a correct tool available i will use the one made for the task instead of my pocket knife or multitool (which i also have in my backpack at work)
And yet there are things i still prefer to use the little pocket knife for. (often times with thin communication wires i prefer to strip off the isolation with the knife blade instead of a dedicated wire stripper. I have my technique for it that i develloped during internships while in engineering school, so i got pretty fast and consistent with that)
I do have other knives, but in the end this one is the one that ends up in my pocket 99% of the time.

Thank you for the elaborate comment, buddy!
Awesome finding more Sportsman fans like myself 😍
Since uploading this video I've been carrying the Sportsman exclusively, really made me re-appreciate it all over again 😊
I get what you're saying about the old-style nail-file on your "economy" models, but trust me on this one, just get a newer model and try it out for a few weeks, you'll thank me after realizing how useful the new version really is 😉

@@Practical_EDC Still keeping you guys in my thoughts and prayers. It can be difficult to get accurate information about what is happening in Israel. I have a few good sources though and it sure seems things have been pretty crazy. Mainly I just wanted to say stay safe. I enjoy your reviews, but your well being is the only important thing at the present time. Shalom!

The sportsman is my general edc knife! The cost is good especially on Amazon and the nail file sets it above all other two layer models?
The can opener also is a great fruit skin peeler ! It has been said that Victorinox are discontinuing all the 84mm models? The tourist has already gone so i guess the sportsman wont be far behind?

Raz Shabbat Shalom to you & family. I too am a fan of the Sportsman, in all I have 4 of them, 3 are in my EDC rotation, one is a pre-2018 model with the older style stippling coated nail file & I have fitted it with rubi red translucent scales, the 2nd one is a post 2018 model with the cross-cut style nail file & I have fitted it with sapphire blue translucent scales & my 3rd EDC carry model is the white scaled 2018 White Christmas Limited Edition. I have 1 more of this model unopened in its box as part of my special models & limited edition collection. In addition I have in my collection the 85mm Wenger Commander which was the Wenger equivalent of the Victorinox 84mm Sportsman. What I would like to buy is the officially discontinued version of the Sportsman without a key ring & the old pre-2018 nail file but so far all of those on offer on eBay are used & not in too good condition and I want a new in box model.

I just realized sportsman is a good emergency/survival knife. If you put ferro rod instead of micro screw driver on the cork screw, you can strike it with the nail file if you need to

Thanks Israeli for review. You can also wear a pin in the scale. I prefer Sportsman than Alox Cadet: 1. It’s more comfortable hand tool for work. 2. It has more functions. I know only two models 84 mm with scissors: Golfer and silver Alox Voyageur. I think, both of these knives are rare and collectible today but you can try.

I know you said you switch between this and the Compact, but if you could only have one… which would it be? Sportsman or Compact? Which has the toolset that you think the average adult who works in an office setting would use more often? Thanks!!!

    • @Practical_EDC
      @Practical_EDC  Год назад

Hi Jason, thank you for the question!
The Compact is the clear winner here, if we're talking about an office environment. You will find yourself using the fantastic scissors more than any other tool, and in a pinch you'll still have a somewhat functional nail-file on the back of the hook.
It does cost almost twice as much as the Sportsman tho, so if money is a concern there's always the Classic SD you can consider over both these models 😊 (just keep in mind you're loosing the bottle opener if you go with the Classic).

@@Practical_EDC thanks for your reply, man! I actually have a keychain Rambler. I guess that’s enough. Why do I have this need to be over prepared? :) I wish they had a 2-layer SAK with a different toolset than I already have in the Rambler. The Special Mechanic would rule, but that’s difficult to find and very expensive. That’s the life of a SAK collector though, I guess.

And yeah, the Spacial Mechanic would be great companion to your Keychain Rambler, but they're just so expensive and hard to find..
