The Prince and the Coachline Painter

- Rolls-Royce have commissioned a series of short films telling extraordinary stories about extraordinary motor cars. We call them 21st Century Legends. In this film, we focus on coachline painter Mark Court. Mark's meticulously steady hand is responsible for painting every coachline-- and his skill comes in ensuring a seamless join as he moves down the 6-metre length of a car. While he usually works out of Goodwood, adding the finishing touches to cars before they are delivered to their owners, the quest for perfection took Mark and his squirrel hair brushes to the desert of Dubai to add his unique signature to a prince's Rolls-Royce after it had left the factory.

Very impressive!
you should do a scratch test for that coachline
JerryRigEverything good mark court is awesome!

yeah
I used to work there years ago, Mark Court is a complete legend.
What’s his salary? Interesting you find that out. Thanks.
@@MrSkudoza I have absolutely no idea :D
Dave Jones I’m sure he’s the only one who can do this, I’m pretty sure that he’s getting paid six figures
@@MrSkudoza It's been revealed elsewhere that it is in excess of six figures.
His hands are sooooooo priceless for the company
look at his final face , that's how he loves his job
Who wouldn’t be happy being paid 6 figures to paint lines 😭
My grandfather was a coach painter. He worked on the royal coaches for the 1935 Jubilee celebrations.
He worked for companies such as Mulliner, Park Ward etc. who built the bodies for cars such as Rolls Royce.
As a child after WWII I remember him restoring prams for people and watching him paint the red coach line around the edge completely free hand and twisting it edgeways at the ends to get the tapered finish.
Thanks for carrying on these wonderful traditional skills.
Thank You for sharing with us, You family story ❤
I like how they talk about him painting the line "in the desert" as if he's actually sweating under the heat of the Arabian sun, not in a princes garage.
Hahahahaha well said
Exactly what I was thinking
Prince’s you mean
Ur mom @@Stillriz
This guy is so proud of what he's doing! I like that attitude.
love his last line,"i am the last person to touch this car before it goes out the door". amazing craftsmanship.......
I love the juxtaposition between the art and the artist. So satisfying to learn that such meticulously painted lines of perfection were indeed created by a normal geezer from down the pub. Quality.
He fakes what you think you see.
I have to say this really draws the line for me
Its insane to me that he can paint flawlessly straight lines like that freehand
There should be more jobs out there like this, careers that people can be proud of.
This goes to show that we can master and take pride in every type of job

Haha, yea
Absolutely stunning and uncomprimised quality! No surprise that Mark had to fly over to DUBAI itself to serve a Rolls Royce customer :P
Extraordinary! I just love people with passion...
Thank you for this story.
best wishes

Mark draws a line on the car.
Someone - Mark!
Mark - what !??
Mark - damn it ...
Wow!! So simple yet so beautiful and powerful.
that's amazing. that is an amazing skill he's clearly mastered. coming from the creative industry i'd love to shake his hand and watch him work for a day.
a completely useless skill
@@MrSimon1909 dude you saw the usage in the video itself

Amazing!
Mark court=legend master craftsman
Pure English craftsmanship. . . Only Rolls Royce
I love Rolls Royce 😍
I sometimes I see a Rolls Royce in my village. Next time I'll see it I'll have a closer look to the line and think of this man. ☺👍
It's very rare to see a Phantom with lines and earlier cars had machine applied lines.
The king of everything🤠
This is true craftsmanship at its best, and when I grow up I would love to design for such a beautiful luxury automobile brand ROLLS ROYCE. Such a British brand that has kept its status even after being bought by bmw. 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
BMW owns the brand and supplies the engine. Everything else is handled in house by RRMC
yes
The Transmission is made by SABB, It's the same Transmission thats in a new dodge truck! Don't be fooled by this bullshit name and advertising,, there's more behind the story then a few youtube videos!
Amazing......
i wonder how Rolls-Royce found this talented man the first place.
Wow Great job Great man no words
Hahaha, you actually believed this myth.

I imagine that for the purposes of this video, the fine lines had already been painted and the brush was dry just to show the technique. I can assure you that both Rolls-Royce and Bentley fine lines are painted freehand. I have been to both Goodwood and Crewe and seen it being done. Before visiting the factories, one might wonder how any car could cost so much. After the visits, I was left wondering how they managed to build such magnificent machines so cheaply.
No....they are 10000% NOT FREEHAND...DONE WITH A STENCIL
You're talking nonsense. Nothing from Spirit onward had freehand lines including anything Mark Court does. He's painting between two strips of masking tape, a technique anyone can learn in a couple of hours. You can even see it in the video if you know what to look for.
@@byteme9718 why should we believe what you say?
@@SeanWithaFada Because I have many years of experience with these cars within the official dealer network and was technical manager for the world's only ever officially appointed Rolls-Royce and Bentley Coachbuilder. We painted these lines on multiple cars each day using the same technique and they're not freehand.
Mark Court never shows what he's claimed to be doing, why do you think that is? There are RUclips videos of other people applying lines by hand and yet he never does. All you see him doing is applying a brush (badly) over an existing line. Does that not all seem strange?
He actually trips himself up when he says the secret is in "losing the joins". No mention of keeping the line straight and of even width, just a concern about reloading the brush. It's terrible technique because a bush should allow you to pass at least one panel. If your lines are masked however it doesn't matter, as long as you can "lose the joins. There's more I can see in the video that shows he's a fake but you'll never spot them because you don't know what you're looking for.
Is he the only one person doing this coachline for Roll Royce? If he died who gonna do it then?
i would
When I am watching this video, I thought that.
Some steady hand painter probably
They'll do it with a machine and lose nothing but some bullshit marketing
@@ShowToddSomeLove I hate to agree, but it's true. The only reason this is done by hand is that some rich guy can go "My bespoke automobile was skilfully assembled and finished by hand by master craftsmen using only the finest materials acquired from *very* expensive sources don'tcherknow".
THANK YOU
There is a lot of negative comments below - dentist (pathetic comment!!) if he is the only one.....regardless English craftsmanship at its best! Mark - well done.
No matter how good he is, the machine is measurably better.
Yup. That is why you can distinguish originals from fakes in fashion products. The best brands are hand made so if the product shows no irregularities it is machine made and a fake. You notice hand seen products. This is what makes it special. It is made by an artist, not by a machine.

He uses a STENCIL...

What happens if you scratch this car? Do they repaint the line by hand again? I'd be pissed if I had to have a coachline redone because some schmuck opened his door too fast.
If you are riding in a roll royce you are not longer parking in places where you have to worry about schmucks opening their doors too fast

And then there is a dude on social media that does it in 8 seconds per line on each side
If your talking about the same person I’m thinking of, is that he does do it fast but If you look at carefully it’s not really perfect as this guy
@@MMA_Cholo This guys lines appear perfect because he doesn't apply then freehand, he paints between masking tape.
Mascenik Pinstriping does the same thing❤❤❤
I doubt it, that is unless you also use a mask.

Why this thing is not done by machines??
Come on Shyla, don't be........shy. I guess your boss has told you to stay quiet?
So, tell me about Proper Motor Cars.
It's done with a mask except where the two lines come together. That last 3" is free-handed. If you feel the stripe it has an edge from the mask. I've striped hundreds of Rolls and they were done by hand in the past with regular striping paint without a mask and not so perfect as they are now. Times have changed and so has the process. I'm sure Mark can still freehand a car if need be.
I AGREE WITH YOU 1000%. I REPAIR THESE STRIPES EVERY WEEK...DONE WITH A STENCIL....THEY ARE PERFECT....NOT DONE BY HAND AND HAVE AN EDGE
i'm here after mekanika making review video about rolls royce cullinan
If he’s the only one who does it, what happens when he retires?
He's not and besides this is really simple technique. He's not painting freehand (which takes great skill) but in between a mask. This is a technique Rolls-Royce have used for decades and when line were standard on all cars these were freely available. What's being done here is slightly different but there is a transparent mask used. Mark Court even gives this away when says at around 50 seconds the technique and the skill is to lose the join. That's true when all you're doing is using a mask but when you're not. keeping the line following the contour while maintaining a consistent is the only real skill.
Kafka Brush Company is for sale.
Where's mark court's rolls royce i wonder
Just think about him having a bad day
"In the desert sun". You mean inside a well air conditioned luxury garage.
Question is, Why you do that using your hand?
You miss the point
Pinstriper here. There's two reasons. One, the the aesthetical: the minimal inconsistencies of a hand-painted line give the car a certain "aliveness"; too perfect a line looks dead. Two, the economical: until recently, it was simply the quickest way. A well-trained factory coachliner could lay down the lines much faster by hand than with the time-consuming process of masking.
I guess old world charm and cost effectiveness.
Also, giving the machines too many jobs leads to an uprising. PINTSTIPINATOR: Handcrafted Fate
Too bad you didnt show images of the cars after he worked on them..
Thats because it's all a myth--They actually apply 3M tape pinstripe to the car.. But RICH PEOPLE are so GULLIBLE -- They believe anything!
What’s the big deal? Royal Enfield petrol tanks are also painted manually for a fraction of this cost.

Why would you think I haven't done this many times? I have told you what gives the technique away and at exactly what times. If you can't see the tell-tales when I have identified them that is your failing because they are all obvious to someone who really knows. Do you not see the parallel lines ahead of his brush?
the driver is the last person to touch it before it goes out the door
1000% done with a STENCIL....NOT FREEHAND
Yes, you can even see it and he actually gives it away when he talks about "losing the joins". No mention of keeping the line straight and even but just losing the joins when the brush is reloaded.
If I had all the money in world I would still never ever buy a RR. While there's tremendous craftsmanship that goes into building them, it doesn't change the fact that they're the ugliest and dumbest cars in the world.
No , You are buying Rolls Royce so they maybe repainted the car again .
