  • How to spin chunky soft singles. Suitable for knitting, weaving, crocheting blankets, throws and more.
    Yarn is softly spun then felted. This gives you a stable yet soft yarn to work with. A yarn that will "NOT" pill or fall apart!

    Thank you so much for this video! I want to dye since chunky yarn but the prices are insane. So I ordered wool and now try to find a way to make the chunky yarn myself. Now I just need a spinning wheel :D. Maybe the hairloom museum in the next town has one.

    I love this lady! Her stunning colourful weaving work on the large loom was extraordinary! BUT please could Ashford do a thick-to-thin roving how to? I'd love to be able to spin something like Colinettes now discountinued Point 5 yarn. I leanrt how to knit with it and I think a knitted scarf with chunky yarn is an ideal first project as it's quick and beautiful and fun.

    Can you twist finer yarn on the country spinner too? I'm wanting to do predominantly chunky yarns but want to know if there is scope for finer yarn spinning too.

    Hi, how do you felt it to make the wool smooth? Do you just wash it or do you do something else to it after? Thanks

      Just washing and agitating in hot water should felt it 👍🏻

    Fab! are you aiming to slightly felt it in the washing machine?

    • @AshfordNz
      @AshfordNz  7 лет назад +4

      Yes, you can felt it as much as you like. If it is washed more it will become firmer and more felted, which is great for hard wearing rugs etc. Less washing/felting will result in a softer yarn.

    Hi can you recommend how I could spin a 100% cotton ball into a 4mm thickness please, by hand I do not have a machine and it is for a small project

      Did you ever get an answer? You could probably use a takli spindle - they’re very inexpensive compared to a wheel.

    I so want to be able to do this and you make it look so easy, but I'm currently on an Ashford traditional wheel with normal bobbin etc... not jumbo. Do you have to have a special wheel to spin super chunky yarn like this? Also is homespun super chunky normally 1 ply?

    • @Sarah-tq2jx
      @Sarah-tq2jx 3 года назад

      You can buy a jumbo plying head for the Ashford traditional, but I think if you want something as thick as this you’d need a country spinner-style wheel. The orifice on these wheels is much larger than it is on a “regular” wheel.

    This is super helpful thank you! But I'm just wondering, are you felting the yarn in the machine or could I hand wash it for the same result?

    • @Sarah-tq2jx
      @Sarah-tq2jx 3 года назад

      It looks like it was felted in the machine. You can felt by hand as well, it will just take longer 😅

      Is that it isn’t necessary to ply it?

    Mam. Where can I buy Yarn to spin from? Is this cheaper than buying yarn from the store ? Please comment

    • @Sarah-tq2jx
      @Sarah-tq2jx 3 года назад

      If you’re in the US, there are a lot of places to buy online. If you Google “roving for spinning,” “combed top for spinning,” or “batts for spinning,” you’ll find a shop. It’s slightly cheaper than buying real wool yarn from a store, but it’s not cheaper than buying the plastic acrylic yarn that you find at big box stores.
