I am a professor of ancient history and am teaching a course right now on women in the ancient world. We're talking about women's work in the ancient period, and I am excited to use this video to show students the process of turning wool into yarn and demonstrate how women throughout the ages have spent much of their time! Thank you for this lovely tutorial.
Tried it today. Beginner. It is time consuming. But necessary. They kept everyone clothed. Now I know why many moms would threw a fit if their kids ruined their clothes they made for them. It takes a long time just to come up with a presentable yarn.
+Fanci Berndt Yeah... Wish the world could go back to those times. All people involved in traditional works have sucha calm voice and beautiful hearts!
I’ve not used my spindle in years and coming across a straight forward introduction was perfect and your voice just made it all the lovelier. Thank you.
I'm reading a book where the protagonist is using a drop spindle and I didn't even know what the heck a drop spindle was. Now I know and I can picture what is happening much clearer. Thanks for the video.
I love the tutorial. I was just curious of drop spindle, but after seeing this I want to purchase one now. I love her video, her voice beautiful and very calming. She made it very simple to understand. Love to find more of her tutorials!!!!
Thank u. Ur so calm and old school. Its nice to feel like someone who is part of this huge bustling city, like me, can calm it down and learn to spin some wool with someone as easy going and soothing as u. I needed this today. Thank u.. i came to learn a spindle but i leave with the unwind THAT I NEEDED, today
I really appreciate that you went into concept before technique! It was useful to see what spinning looked like before talking about which parts of setup mattered. Lovely video!
What a calm and relaxing manner you have to teach. I've often thought about making my own yarn. Apart from dropping the spindle it seems to be a good therapy session. Thank you for sharing 😊
Thank you for this video!!! My husband made me a drop spindle and now I'm spinning plarn. I've started a hand bag and can't wait to finish it!!! Again, thank you!!!
i have 400g of colored core wool that a dishonest store sold me as good quality wool for needle felting...and i didnt know what to do until i saw this...omg thank you!!! i will make mine :D but im right handed so i guess will hold the wool with this hand God bless you!! Mexico City.
So i joined a fb group on spinning and everyone keeps talking about "park n drafting" and all these terms and making it seem so confusing i didn't even want to actually try. Your video is so straightforward im gonna give it a go. I'll let you know if i fail lol
I use a low whirl spindle too. I love it. But it always stuns me that people get the spindle going by twisting the shaft. I have a 90 gm disc on mine..quite large i realise now..it was my first. And i just give the disc a flick. Lot easier and you dont interfere with the spun yarn.yes i leave a small gap on the shaft at the top so i can use it to wind the thread on. But using the disc to spin means i can load up that shaft to the max. Also, my shaft is removeable. Yours?? Thus i have one disc and lots of shafts for a variety of colours and fibres in progress. Lovely video. I hope lots of people now want to take up spinning. I love telling people my mittens were walking around a short while ago😄
Thank you for this tutorial. I just purchased a drop spinal, with the hook, on the opposite end of the dowel. I have seen other videos, teaching it this way. Your way makes more sense to me & I am changing my hook & doing it your way. Thank you very much !!!
Thank you for this video! I'm just beginning to learn to spin and this has been extremely helpful to me. Incidentally, I'm also learning Scots Gaelic, so I'll add Slàinte mhath! Thanks again!
This is so useful to me because there's a really amazing book called Sandry's Book where the main character uses a drop spindle and I had no idea how to envision what she was doing before this :)
@@imogenclaire1069 don’t let that hold you back! You can find spindles on Amazon pretty easily. Or, and here’s the real tea, they’re actually pretty easy to make (and super cheap, too!). You’ll need three things: 1) a wooden dowel 2) a metal hook. The kind you can screw into the end of the dowel 3) some kind of disc object. Like a wooden disk, or a round cabinet handle For the style in the video, you want to drill a hole in the disc, insert the dowel through the hole, and secure it a few inches from the bottom of the dowel (you could probably use wood glue, or some other kind of glue, to secure it.). Actually, you might not need to drill anything. Just glue it to the bottom of the dowel. And screw the hook into the top part of the dowel. This would be a “bottom whorl” spindle. Or, you can glue your disc to the top of the dowel, and then screw the hook into the top of that, an you’ll end up with a “top whorl” spindle. That’s the kind I have. The disc is just a cabinet handle, so it’s not very big and doesn’t add a lot of weight. It’s harder to keep spinning, but I just use the “park” method (check it out), and everything works out just fine. As far as fiber, I just got mine off of Amazon. You can find fiber websites, too. I think fiberparadise was an online place you could get all kinds of fibers from. Anyways, happy spinning!
What i need to know is...Can we use other materials for weaving like this? such as cotton and animal hair? I am going to find a drop spindle ASAP, The time will come when we will have to back to making textiles by hand, and i am eager to start to learn now, so i can teach the younger one's....Thank you for this short yet clear and easy to understand the basic's, Bless you dear sister.
You make it sound so easy. Great tutorial! I'm getting sheep and would love to be able to spin my own yarn to sell or save to knit or crochet myself :)
Can't wait to try your method. We have a local group of spinners who gifted me with a drop spindle but they don't use the hook at the top. I hope this method works better than the one I am currently trying to do. Thank you for the video.
If you have a top weighted drop spindle- would the method for spinning be the same? I'm really really new to this- so I have no clue ;) Thank you for an amazing and easily understood tutorial!
Eh, pretty much the same. I tend to use the “park” method: give it a good flick, let it spin a bit to build up twist, then hold it still between your legs while you draft out more yarn. Oh wait, this comment if five years old. You probably don’t need the advice now. Lol
Well, that was interesting. What happens if the yarn breaks in the middle while spinning though? Just fluff it out and draw it back through the clump of wool?
Thank you for this video. I know it is now 5 years old, but I wanted to take a chance that a question could be answered. I am looking to spin plastic yarn from grocery bags to make reusable grocery bags. Would this type of spindle work for that?

India is becoming a super power but I had seen old men in my village doing the same thing. I am talking about 1990s.
Venus de Milo was spinning yarn before her arms were broken off.

+Fanci Berndt I love the way she says, "Hook."

Finally! A simple drop spindle tutorial that leaves out all the cluttering terminology and unnecessary steps.

Did the protagonist subsequently have a charming Scottish accent and disarmingly gentle demeanor after watching this video?
Same.
Was it sandry from the circle of magic series? If so, same
Are you talking about Sandry?
I love how everyone here knows who it is

skywriter1962 there are tutorials online for making drop spindles. It's really quite easy.
You can spin any kind of fiber. Not all of them make yarn quite as easily, but it can theoretically be done.
Wow, what an interesting tool! Never knew they existed and that only a wheel was able to spin material into yarn/thread.
You make it sound so easy. Great tutorial! I'm getting sheep and would love to be able to spin my own yarn to sell or save to knit or crochet myself :)
