  • Maria Shtrik, our distributor in Russia visited us earlier this year. Maria is a very skilled felter and one of her felted shawls was featured in "The Wheel" magazine (our annual fibercraft magazine). She kindly shared her technique for making beautiful fine felt with us. This is an excellent way to make felt and it is amazing how fine you can make it using very little fibre.
Learn how to make fine felt batts from luxurious fibres using your Ashford blending board. Create repeatable batts. Use luxury fibres such as linen, silk, viscose, bamboo and more.
For more information on making the felted shawl featured in Issue 27 of The Wheel magazine go to the link in the video above.

Oh.My.God. The silk paper I could make with this! I have always struggled with doing the laying out in the silk paper process. That’s it. I am going to get one of these babies! I use silk paper to do my machine embroidery on, but have not done it so much, as I have had such pain getting the blended look I want. Also same with felting. My batts have never had that subtle look I have wanted. I am so happpy I found this video, as I always thought this was purely part of the spinning preparation process. Thank you, thank you thank you!

I would like to make a scarf like this, but how do I get each 12x12 batt to match each one to make the scarf or is this not necessary?

After watching Maria's video, it is such a shame that this is not in English as I & my 2 friends (all of us in our 70's) would find this most beneficial as we are novices in this wonderful art. I did make a few notes for pass on, but these are very limited. Are there any other videos you could recommend for us to watch please in English?

I can’t find Maria on google search...English or German to tell me how to make the scarf.
I love her dress in wheel 29 , want to make her scarf as well ...

It pretty much shows in the video, just create these or better still your own design of batts, use flick carder to join them, then lay out the elongated piece on a towel, spritz it so it's wetted, then give it a good bash, or could use a pinned tool to smash the fibres together well as to felt, roll it up to dry a little, then leave to dry. I'm curious as to how she made this as silk does NOT felt, neither does linen...

Gemma I noticed... still trying.... wool and acrylic fibre...
Just one batt to practice and also the dress Mariah made ...
      See wheel 29 ashford Mariah’s dress ...
Is full of silk ..?... I wonder, taking wool instead ...trying batts
It’s a BIG PROJECT , ... what happened by making batts in 7 layers
The layers where you lay the batts on > first on an blending board
Then the 4 colors , the way they describe in the magazine ..
So I will find out a way of making I quess
This is a shawl , less materials then in the magazine (nr ?) shown

Ah. In-video links don't tend to work on iOS. RUclips only recently started integrating them into their app.

This is not telling me , how to make the batts for the dress in wheel 29
There’s a difference in the layers , I can’t see the way of making as told in magazine 29
Also I can’t follow how to make layer 1/3 dress , where you put on the batts ...
