Enclosures are an absolutely HUGE part of authentic bebop language. This week, I'm gonna show you a bit more than the average youtube video on the subject tends to. We'll of course learn about the basic cells and go over how they work to surround, or "enclose" the target note of the scale or chord. After that though, the training wheels come off and we'll dive deep into actually using them in contexts that make sense musically and lead towards playing interesting bebop phrases.
First, I'll show you a few exercises that combine enclosures with diatonic arpeggios and pivots. We'll play these in a few different configurations and with some different rhythmic applications. We'll also practice stringing together multiple enclosure patterns to keep delaying the resolution of a line or phrase.
Next, I'll show you guys how you can use enclosures over a static chord to make some really interesting lines by just targeting chord tones. Then, we'll take a look at one of my favorite phrases from legendary tenor saxophone player Dexter Gordon and use it as some inspiration for our own lines. Finally, we'll play an etude of four phrases over a ii-V-I-VI progression using everything we've learned.

@@AdrianFarrell you're welcome! Took a while to figure out how I wanted to present things. Hope you found this helpful.
Absolutely fantastic.
Glad you think so! Feel free to drop a suggestion for a future video here. I'm always curious about what you guys wanna learn or improve at.
Great lesson👍👍❤🎸
This is great, excellent explanations, practice advice and all. If you want to take it to another level, given that you are targeting beginner or intermediate players, you should add a section in the end where you use it to improvise over a well known standard (not just generic changes) and walk us through exactly the way you are thinking when composing/improvising a solo/etude over that standard. Not the whole song, but 8-12 bars or something. Just my two cents and a part that I am always missing in these types of YT videos. Best of luck and thanks for teaching us!
I'll definitely do that in future. Thanks for the feedback!
Great lesson! Is there a pdf of the examples?
@@christopherbandini9756 yup! You can find that over at my patreon page. There's a free bonus this month for my 1 year anniversary on youtube as well.
What a great lesson, and channel….really appreciate….your awesome, thanks!!
This is really hard :/
Ah man I'm sorry to hear that. If this feels too difficult that might mean you need some more time with just the major scales and the arpeggios or simpler sequences. You can do this but just might not be quite ready yet! 🙏
