You're super welcome. My goal with this series was to take a deep look at the elements of improvisation on a bunch of standards. More to come like this!
Thanks! The method is constantly evolving too. Teaching improvisation is always difficult but even more so through asynchronous video. Thanks for watching!
I am really impressed how you have absorbed the Barry Harris thing, It's a lot of information to translate into your playing but I can see the logic in it.
Good morning, Man. Personally, I find your videos fantastic. You mentioned something at the beginning of this video, that I thought I may suggest to you. I always tell students to play as you speak. Most teachers (including yourself) don’t mention is breathing. Once I learned about circular breathing, I became aware of the importance of breathing. You can play all the notes you want, even correctly, and they may still sound as just correct notes, and not say anything. Phrasing has to do so-much with communication, it’s unbelievable. All I’m trying to say is include what you share, especially the Barry stuff (I too am an avid follower), is the importance of breathing. This way you can say what you want to say so much more clearly. Continue to be Blessed, and keep sharing.
This is excellently put! It's very true that guitarists especially forget to breathe when we play. I'll have to remember to mention this point when I get around to making a video about rhythmic phrasing and pulse. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. Glad your enjoying my work!
I have always loved and connected with the Barry Harris Method. I got away from it over the years but your lesson applying it to to guitar got me back into it... deeply! I loved this lesson. You cover so much... yet in such a clear, organized and step-by-step manner which I love. This was my first lesson I have watched of yours and I'm hooked. But ....Sadly though, it looks like you only got to EP 4 and stopped. I hope you will continue with more lessons on the Standards.
I definitely need to revisit this series. These just take a huge amount of time to put together. Over on the patreon I do a similar thing though. Every couple weeks I do about 30 minutes on one aspect of a tune. So over the course of a month to 2 months we cover everything I was doing in this series and then some!
@@dsg_studio Thanks. I just signed up. I may have chosen the wrong plan though. I want access to your current AND previous lessons but I don't really need pdfs. I did the $3/month. But does it require $10/month for PREVIOUS lessons access?
Is there a way for you to adjust the $3 charge to $10 if I upgrade today or will "it" charge me n additional $10 to total $13. (sorry to communicate with you on youtube, I don't see another way to communicate with you about these types of things)
Very nice. Really enjoyed your explanation of and breakdown of this beautiful and classic piece. Just copied the chord solo. Also played it using only the shell voicings on the bass strings.
@MyLearnJazzStandardsVide-vs7fb thanks for watching! Glad you found it helpful. There's lots more like this on the channel if you poke around. The production value and presentation has improved leaps and bounds since this first outing in my opinion. I've been meaning to revisit this series so if there's a tune you'd like me to cover, let me know!
For anyone going through the comping section, at the start of the second A section the chord chart doesn't match the Eb6, and the Cm6 is one fret off. But excellent video, it's really helping me get a grasp on these substitutions and how things relate. I'm sure I'll be able to recognize them faster as I practice. I would love to see a video on Lady bird, or Blue Bossa.
@15gchu ah so sorry about those errors. This was the first video I ever made. More recent efforts are of a more consistent quality haha. Glad you were able to get something out of it. There's lots more on these subjects on the channel. Thanks so much for the feedback! I'll have to come back to this series soon.
I really enjoyed your videos I watched so far! Some of this is still going over my head, me not being a Jazz Player, but I will trying to get some of the techniques and concepts into my Fingerstyle playing for sure :D. Would love to hear you talk about Solo Arcs (that graphic you briefly showed kinda blew my mind ) if you can, as that has demystified the whole "tell a story" thing everyone keeps talking about :D
Thanks so much for watching! I may do some videos in future breaking down some of these concepts for beginning improvisers. That'd probably be a good place to go over how to create a good solo arc. Something my teacher used to have me do is to listen to a solo that I'm intending to transcribe and draw the arc as I showed in that graphic. Thanks for the wonderful feedback!
Hi. Are you going to continue making these videos? I was interested in getting some videos to learn standards, like trio chord-melody, comping, and improv etude, just like you have here. Could you tell me if you are doing something like this in your Patreon? The Barry Harris ideas were a little too far from my knowledge, but I think I will see the video you advised. Thank you.
@MrTelmoM this series has morphed into a patron exclusive. Rather than one big video I go through each element of the tune sequentially over multiple episodes. Mist recently we did It Could Happen to you.
this is just excellent but i will need months to digest this 30 minutes ah ah I would love if you could do the same thing whith on the sunny side of the street an what is this thing called love

Im glad I discovered this channel on the early days
That's such a sweet sentiment. Really appreciate your support!

I really like this content. I want to build a jazz repertoire. Is becoming a Patreon member how I get the course on jazz standards.
I like this video because it's steadily throwing light on everything: melody, chord melody, comping, scales and how to play the whole song. Thanks.

Great method for learning tunes. Jazz is a life time pursuit.
Thanks! The method is constantly evolving too. Teaching improvisation is always difficult but even more so through asynchronous video. Thanks for watching!
It’s like talking to someone. Which is what Jazz improvisation is trying to communicate to our listeners.
Excellent video and loved you referencing Robbie, he is amazing.
I am really impressed how you have absorbed the Barry Harris thing, It's a lot of information to translate into your playing but I can see the logic in it.
Thank you! Still digesting it, really. It's such a deep concept.
30 years of knowledge in 30 minutes!
Haha maybe not 30 years worth but there's certainly lots of mileage on this and episode 2. Thanks for watching. Ep. 3 coming soon!
Great video! Thank you! ❤
You're welcome!

@smatlanta1 thanks for joining up! To access all the documentation, yeah, you'd need to join up at the $10 level. Thanks again!

@@smatlanta1let me take a look. If you upgrade on patreon and it charges you the full 10 i can just refund the 3 bucks back to you.
What a great lesson! I’m going to go through every part of this. Thanks, subbed.

Great stuff, mate! Very exciting content. Would you make a video about Chick Corea's Spain? I would like to see how you approach this one. Cheers!
Ooooh, yeah man that's a great tune!

Awesome video series!!!
Thank you so much! I've got three more episodes left in this "season." Trying to get one of these out each month. Glad you enjoyed!
@@dsg_studio Great single line etude as well
in bar 18 the actual chord played has the low tone on the 4th string at fret 13 (D#) rather than 10 as shown on the score ("this chord I really like")
Its possible there's an error in the score. Sometimes these things slip by me. Thanks for having such a keen eye!

Those are great tunes! I'll get cracking on those etudes
Awesome once again ! I would bet Robbie and you are siblings
Haha thanks! Man that's kinda hilarious. I can sort of see a resemblance now that you mention it. 🤣
