My pleasure. It can be super impenetrable st first but the concept is really useful. Lots of cool sing note ideas from him too! Thanks for stopping by and comment. There's more barry stuff in my improvise like a pro series so go check that out!
This is a fantastic “in a nutshell” video that gets to the point and shows you how valuable the Barry Harris method is and different examples of how to incorporate the various chord scales. Great stuff… thank you! 🙏🏻
Very instructive on a lot of levels but especially with regards to the structural overlays with regard to scale positions and the movement adjustments in the borrowing concepts. This fills in some much needed gaps in my understanding. Thank you for an excellent video:) It would be lovely to see the other voicing and convolutions between voicings.
This video was very helpful in outlining some of the applications of the 6th diminished scale voicings. I appreciated your clear explanations and the examples, including Blue Boring...er, Bossa, which is definitely NOT boring the way you played it! Thanks for sharing this information.
hahaha! Blue Boring! I love it! Glad you found the video helpful. My goal was definitely to provide you guys with more of an "application focused" approach to learning this concept. Glad it came through!
You're super welcome! Thanks for watching! Barry's harmonic system is really extraordinary. Very intuitive once you get your hands around some of the moves as well. Happy practicing!
I was secretly hoping you would do a video about this! Your style and pace of teaching are excellent in my opinion!! I especially love the examples, since that is something that was hard to discern from any book or video out there I came across so far. I would love more videos about this concept if you find the time. As a Blues and Fingestyle Blues player, I am mainly looking to spice up my rhythm playing and add something different and this video really helps bridge that gap for me.
Man I'm really glad you got so much out of this one. Like I said it's a super deep well so this definitely won't be the last video I do on the concept. Thanks for watching!
Wow, that's an amazing lesson! Thanks for the incredibly informative info! I've known some of that stuff for years, but I don't really get a chance to use it much. I'll have to really go at a snail's pace and work on those chord scales with the diminished. I mostly play Blues style music that I work on my own originals and try recording when I get a chance. I'd be able to use a lot of those in small chunks for areas in the blues for sure! It definitely made me subscribe to so thanks for that!
Thanks for subscribing! Yeah, this concept can seem really dense when you first encounter it, but once you start to realize you can use it over large swaths of chords it becomes pretty intuitive. Especially so once you know about the main substitutions. Happy practicing!
Excellent video indeed, the first clear, concise and PRACTICAL that I see on the topic. Can I ask how did you learn the Barry Harris concepts ? Indeed there are no official books or methods. Everything is scattered and partial. Cheers for bringing clarity. If you have more in depths material about this I’m interested.
Haha, I'm only surprised anyone hasn't said something yet 😂 Thanks again, this material is so in depth! It's like if I can just get through to the other side, I might be able to go back and explore things with more meaning, but the tunnel seems to have no end.
@LostSoulAscension haha I've gotten Hugh Jackman before but never RDJ. It's deep stuff but the key is to just take it in your own time and use what you can 🙏
@raquel-cruz-jazz thank you! All the tones actually come from my DAW. I'm using the latest version of amplitube with their maz18 amp model. Getting good clean tones from an amp sim is annoyingly difficult these days but I'm quite fond of this one. On gigs I use a quilter 101 head into a separate 212 cab. For practice I've got a little yamaha THR amp that does the job nicely.
You're the greatest jazz teacher out there man, sooner or later i'm going to get some classes with you. Just a question, can i use A6 dimished voicings over Dm7 as well?
Oh man, chords are some of the best uses for his scale! So many options for movement in comping and chord solos. Check out some of my Improvise like a pro series and see how you can use the concept chord-melody arrangements!
The leading tones right out of the 6dim scale seem to work everywhere. Picking substitutes in a chord progression is a little harder. Some the voicings are just hard, but they sound great as triads and double-stops too. I'll keep trying this 'til it smooths out. Thanks!
Excellent clear video, very helpful! Your channel should have way more views and subs... I've just subbed so I guess you're moving in the right direction :) thank you for the video.
So... I will come back and steal your ideas, one at a time, tho.. I sing the Great american songbook for seniors and i can find a song to try there chord runs, I am trying to improve my comping, i run em opposite melody, I absorbed the chord substitution secondary dominant, but i was stalled til now. Thanks
i would appreciate it if you had a video of applying this method to a jazz standard, describing in detail when and where you’ve applied it. as it’s currently presented, there’s a lot of working backwards to figure out what you’re doing over the 2-5-1 examples and the example of playing over Blue Bossa, and i feel like a more in-depth explanation would help illustrate the concept better.
Check out my series improvise like a pro! In episode three on Have You Met Miss Jones I do pretty much what you're asking after. Let me know if you still have questions after watching through that. Cheers!
If you were playing the Cmaj6 diminished scale over a 251 in C major, would you only use the D minor 6 diminished over the 2, a Gdom diminished over the 5 and the maj6 over the 1, or would you used the C maj6 diminished for the whole 251? Thanks, this video is great.
You could do it that way or you could play maj6 diminished over the whole thing since the scale contains its dominant and the ii chord is just a suspension of the dominant. Thanks!
Hi! I really enjoyed this video! Thank you 😊! Here is my question…. I took the Maj6 chord and it’s diminished 1/2 step below to create the maj6 diminished scale…. Then harmonized it!!! I got the inversions of the tonic…. But why are you saying you get the inversions of its tonic and it’s dominant? Aren’t you getting the inversions of its tonic and it’s diminished chord 1/2 step below? I know this can be subbed as a dominant I guess but just want to clarify… let me know 😊
Yeah the diminished is functioning as the dominant in this case. So you get maj6 and dom7b9 and then all the inversions thereafter. Same goes for the relative minor. Hope that helps!
Great suggestion. I'll do a video with some movement ideas soon. Will be talking about some 6 diminished stuff on Sunday during the 1k livestream so be sure to tune in if you have questions!
@jamesweatherly1204 it also has to resolve correctly. That could be where things went awry. Make sure you resolve into either one of the notes of c6 or a chord tone of Fmaj7, which btw overlap a ton.
Thanks for the feedback. I wonder if my DAW setup was giving me trouble or something got changed when I rendered. I'll try to make sure the videos have a better tone and more consistent.
Barry Harris is obviously a titan but why does jazz have to be how he says it should be? "Barry says we need to be movement players." What happened to the individuality in jazz? Do we all have to be Barry disciples? His concepts, though amazing and insanely well thought-out to be sure, are just not really for me. I'm not a fan of the sound and the incessant 6 chords get a little irritating. I don't agree with his view that the maj7 sounds unresolved so just stick to 6 chords kind of idea. Though these sounds aren't really for me, nice video and I can definitely appreciate the concepts.
Wow, instant Pasquale sound!
Thanks for watching!
Amazing sounds from minute 7:35, that's where things begin to get really interesting.
Thanks for this! I’m just getting into the Barry Harris approach and I really appreciate the clarity and tasteful examples here!

Awesome, do more Barry Harris...Thanks
Will do! You want more comping solutions or single note stuff?
