Too many people saying “that was cringe” as if Jon Stewart was ever the funniest dude ever. He’s popular for his willingness to tell the truth on topics the media doesn’t want to talk about, and most of the comedy from the daily show came from the correspondents. Jon’s most popular comedy segment was making fun of Chicago style pizza… now shut up and listen to his politics, and ignore his jokes

I think women may like true crime because of one of 3 things: we like to analyze and understand people. The stereotype that women love gossip and this is the ultimate gossip. And it's fascinating a lot of the time the lengths a person can go to, what their mind can become. And there probably is some aspect internally of learning the cues to look out for and methods to escape. Other women have that weird thing where they love murders. Large pool

As a woman, I feel like many watch True Crimes bc 1. They’re entertaining and people like spooky things in general 2. Warning Signs and tips, but ultimately 3: it validates fears you may have daily. The same way that people watch Hasan talk about what’s wrong with the country and how we should be doing things differently, other women may feel a sense of relief/validation watching with others to react to a common fear they have in their lives. It adds a sense of community and not being alone even if the subject material is upsetting, and it feels better to have others recognize things that are wrong that others might not think about as much as you.

I agree. The reminder of these true crime cases is that I've seen people act "normally" everyday of my life. If my gut tell me something is wrong, chance is, something is. I was followed walking back from uni at night. I make a two hour, mostly isolated journey back from the uni, so, when I noticed, I still had a long way to go. Made 4 right turns, had my friend on facetime, walked around in crowded places (Starbucks), made conversations with the staff, till someone picked me up. It just helps me feel valid and is a reminder, people can be fucked up. Also it's musing to listen to true crime while I'm doing my makeup in the morning, it conveniently wakes me up.

And it’s validating - so many men don’t believe the threat they truly are and don’t believe women. True Crime shows these things DO happen and SHOULD be feared. So many men don’t believe these terrible things can happen until they do. The True Crime genre is also so important for awareness for these issues. I think the reason women are more into true crime is that learning about the in's and out's of violent criminals helps one feel like they will have more control should such a situation happen, especially if you are more of a target for that. Plus with the psychological analysis of "unique" people and the general mystery of the cases themselves, it can be very interesting if you have the stomach for it.

The law in medieval times was that you couldn't carry around a full size weapon and had to resort to a small dagger. This kept people safe and allowed them to defend themselves but they weren't able to just start hacking people apart with an axe or sword. It's very reminiscent of allowing folks to carry assault rifles instead of strictly small firearms.
Personally, I don't think either is necessary and there's still a huge difference in how effective a pistol is compared to a dagger but it's interesting to discuss.

Studies show that feeling “fear” in a controlled setting produces a kind of relaxed high similar to meditation.
Additionally, some studies have suggested women have a higher mental endurance to difficulty due to the very real environmental and social dangers they face. Which for this reason, African American women have the highest (endurance is the wrong word but something like that) and lowest suicide rates while in contrast white men are the opposite.

13:50 As a woman and true crime lover, I could not tell you why we do. For some it’s pure interest, others (depending on the case) it’s a sense of empowerment I think? For me it was almost hope, I would absolutely binge the show “I survived” when I was deep in an abusive relationship with a narcissist - seeing the stories of these incredible women surviving these *horrific* attacks made me feel like; they got out of it. It gave me hope that there was life outside of my abuse.
Obviously I can’t speak for all women, but for myself and other abuse survivors I know, I think it’s a lot of hope and empowerment, again, depending on the case.
