Where would species be today if much of the militaries' budget were spent on space travel? Space travel, the ONLY thing that will even save a military.

@@szahmad2416 The far-right has always been less prone to war than the center-right - not necessarily because it's anti-war per se, but because it doesn't like / care about foreigners. Trump has probably been the least hawkish Republican in history. He ran on greater isolationism in 2016 and is running on it again.
The far-left is also less hawkish out of pacifism, all couched in anti-American and anti-imperialist rhetoric, whereas the far-right is so out of isolationism couched in "Why should we give a fuck about these tracksuit-wearing, Squatting-Slav Eastern European punks? Our money is best spent here" type of rhetoric. So the center-right and the center-left have always been the most hawkish.
Of course, when it comes to Zelensky, the left will naturally like him more, because his country is weak and the guy is basically a welfare queen just bumming around the world in that stupid Eastern European tracksuit asking and guilt-tripping others for charity. If Ukraine wanted protection, it should've put out to NATO earlier, but Ukrainians themselves are divided between between pro-Russian and pro-Western. Not that it's any of our business.

@@nonmagicmike723 I'll put you down as one at least partially sympathetic to the far-right worldview, then, based on the bit about Zelensky, which I think is a bit misplaced.
But no, I'm positive that this mindset was NOT present among the far right when 'Murka was occupying Vietnam; many of the far right-wingers still had grievances that 'Murka hadn't nuked North Vietnam and won the war...and more recently, the humiliation of leaving Afghanistan without wholesale slaughtering of the Taliban. You can even see some of this in Bannon and Trump's MAGA rhetoric of restoring "greatness" and "winning" and America's place in the world.
This mindset is relatively new, and I think it started after the second Iraq war, when the far right saw that they, too, were taken for complete dupes; were used and abused just as much as the most establishment idealist they sneered at. That seems to be the trajectory of Tucker Carlson, certainly. The glory of belonging to something "great" that destroyed or created a vision on whim faded when they saw they were used as pawns, and did not reap any of the benefits of the invasion, or that they had not defended America or their homes in any way. I think, too, that (to their credit), they suddenly saw America the way many of America's conquered saw it - bent on conquest and a makeover of traditional cultures through bombs and dollars, all with a considering smile on its face, blessed by an entrenched media establishment which was part of that effort. Of course, they came to a different conclusion, but they nevertheless saw it.

On the top list of defence budgets, the United States have been outspending the next 14 to 20 countries *combined* for the past several decades. That info again, the annual US defence budget has been larger than those of the next 14 to 20 countries _taken together,_ for decades. And most of those "next countries" are America's closest allies, basically all of NATO and SEATO.
And what it is getting for all that ridiculous money that you could build entire new countries with, is dysfunctional systems like the Osprey or F35 that need additional trillions to fix after the fact because that is just the way of defence contractors to milk the system for even more cash ("create a problem - sell a solution"). Not to mention useless prestige projects like all these aircraft carriers that the US navy daren't even send to the real hot spots like Oh say, the Persian Gulf, for fear they might be embarrassingly sunk by something like a cheap Iranian diesel sub or an even cheaper Iranian fleet of tiny boats with guided anti-ship missiles (as happened during a war game) and that would be nuked out of the water immediately by ballistic missiles against which it is impossible to defend them if the shit actually did hit the fan eventually one day.
