      Investigating crime report maps in any given city reveals that certain neighborhoods have disproportionate amounts of crime to an exponential degree. Perhaps having the military patrol high crime neighborhoods will bring peace to those neighborhoods seeing as how the police are ineffective at keeping crime at bay.
      I've long lost patience with the failures of our nation to solve problems and approach all political angles and issues as a fixer of problems. We need clear and direct solutions, not waffling or weak handed approaches.
      Ending the era of limp wristed politics and instead focusing on direct, hard, scientific solutions to problems should be the goal. Fundamentally I blame libertarianism and the libertarian mindset for most problems in the world. Anti-vaxxers are one thing, but abolish the police is another bad idea just as bad as anti-vaxxers. All of these toxic movements are destabilizing society to the point where cracks are starting to appear because people are promulgating bad ideas to an exponential degree, which results in deteriorating conditions... Rising crime, political destabilization, economic disorder, etc.

A man opened fire on a crowded outdoor bar patio and cops responded quickly and had shot the guy 32 seconds after he opened fire. THIRTY TWO SECONDS between the first shot being fired and him being killed by the good guys with guns.

If you have a history of multiple domestic violence complaints and convictions then it should be far more difficult, if not outright banned for you to have a gun. In my state of Georgia, sadly, it is often a non-starter even with LE officers who are allies and work with DV advocates and organizations. It is so infuriating and heartbreaking at the same time. Off base, the Marine, faces double jeopardy. We do our best to enforce DV. Yes, the military has a higher rate then civilians. Here in Colorado even if you are charged with anything DV, your guns are taken away. Seems pretty straight forward to me. Not sure why other states cannot get onboard with that. I support the right to have guns in the hands of the right people, but people who commit violent crimes, even while only charged, should not have access to guns. Honestly after serving in the military and having grown up around guns and hunters, it perplexes me why people who do purchase guns do not have mandatory training and safety awareness. If there is one thing that should have safety over done it is gun ownership. There should be a mandatory two week training done for anyone buying a gun. That is less then the amount i had prior to even going into the military.

The people who want to take guns away are also the ones that have been pushing for and making bail "reforms" and letting out violent criminals over and over. Also the chart they showed for a second was extremely misleading. Jon says that studies show that more guns means more deaths but that chart specifically shows gun deaths. Perfect balance of a sound, well reasoned argument about an important social issue, without spinning every systemic cultural problem into a catastrophe, and keeping on topic with relevant humor throughout the segment, rather than detouring into absurdist nonsense. Just great stuff.
    More people need to appreciate just how clear the leading indicators for violent outbursts are. Domestic Violence is a signal that the individual and family culture views violence as a normal form of social interaction, and a means to an end. And as always, theres an underlying socio-economic problem at the heart of domestic violence. "Lock them up" and "take their guns" are important measures for the end of the process flow, but the real change is made upstream, identifying why these young men and women are growing in environments that normalize violence and abuse.

I genuinely believe we do not even need to ban guns like AKs or ARs. 24,000 of the 43,000 gun violence deaths last year were because of suicide. If we improved our healthcare system, we drastically reduce the number. Simply closing loopholes and getting guns away from domestic abusers reduces it even more. Address the severe poverty that many people of color are in, that number goes down even farther. Couple that with improving the background check system, and we could stop most of these deaths from happening and still allow people to own what they want. Not to mention the addition of an improved quality of life. It’s such a straightforward solution that it infuriates to no end how much it is ignored.

    Did you know, a lot of judges deciding dv cases (injunctions/restraining orders) think that abusers have a right to their guns despite believing abuse occurred. If you're an attorney before such judges, bring the fed rules with you to help remind the judge. It works (usually).

    • @archerj.maggott1372
      @archerj.maggott1372 3 года назад

      That might be a possible way around the underlying problem, which is that state and local cops don't have to enforce the Gun Control Act of 1968 -- which is the federal law that says DV offenders may not buy or own guns -- because it is not written into the Constitution itself. It's thus their 10th Amendment right to refuse to enforce it. But yes, if a local judge tells them to, then that might be a different story, since they were ordered by the local court.
      Still, without state and local laws that say the same thing as the federal law, you're going to have lots of instances where local cops and/or judges don't want to take a DV offender's guns, and, since the 10th Amendment says they don't have to anyway, they may not do it, even when asked. Then, it will be voluntary for the offender to give up his guns, which is of course just another way of saying that he won't have to.
      He can likely also get a new gun through a private sale or a straw purchaser, even though if he tries to get one at a store, the NICS check will tell the dealer -- who is licensed through the ATF, and thus has federal (not local) law enforcement looking over his shoulder -- not to sell to him. Thus, the commercial dealer is the only likely barrier to the DV offender who wants to get a gun, and there are multiple ways around him.

    • @sweetsensation28
      @sweetsensation28 3 года назад

      @@archerj.maggott1372 I can only provide an example for Florida, and the law for dv says if an dv injunction is granted against you, you cannot be in possession of your guns. Some judges like to say it's not a must but a suggestion of the max that can be ordered against the abuser, but it's not. And when you remind them that it is not just a local state law but federal, they are more inclined to follow the law in fear of being appealed.
      You still have some judges who don't care and believe the survivor doesn't have the means to pay for an appeal.
      Doesn't hurt to be prepared at all levels, especially if you want to preserve the record for appeal.
      You are right, injunctions do little to protect the abused when law enforcement will not do their part in enforcing it. A lot of victims don't even know how to use the order to protect them selves. Lots of education is lacking in this area and you need all boots on the ground involved to find the holes and solutions for the holes.
      Gun control...yeah well we know that's always been a problem and not enough is ever done to fix it.

    • @archerj.maggott1372
      @archerj.maggott1372 3 года назад

      The problem is that it's a federal law -- i.e. the Gun Control Act of 1968 -- which says that DV offenders may not buy or own guns. Thus, local cops don't have to enforce it if they don't want to, since refusing to enforce it is their 10th Amendment right. It's a right which was affirmed by the 1997 SCOTUS case 'Printz v. United States'. They don't have to enforce federal laws that aren't baked into the Constitution itself, and so if a law isn't, then they often don't.
      A commercial gun dealer, on the other hand, pretty much has to comply with the federal law, since his FFL makes him directly accountable to the ATF. However, depending on what state a DV offender lives in, he can likely get around that problem by buying a gun through a private seller or a straw purchaser, and, even if local LEOs have knowledge of his illegal actions, they don't have to enforce the law...that is, unless there is a state or local law that happens to say the same thing as the federal law.
      So maybe someone would therefore say, "Well then just make state and local laws that say the same thing as the federal one," but now you're technically making new laws, which nobody seems to want. The only alternative remedies would be to repeal the 10th Amendment -- which is an important cornerstone of state's rights -- or to somehow make local LEOs want to enforce laws that they aren't legally required to enforce. Maybe we could persuade them with some Tim Hortons or some Dunkin' Donuts.

      @@MasterFlarg89 there’s a lot going on in your comment, but I’ll try my best to hit it all. First the “loopholes”. The honest truth is inside gunshows anybody sells any firearms must follow all the same rules as a standard gun shop. Having also worked in that industry I can promise you it is not easy to just buy a gun. Anyone selling guns there that’s not ‘running names and numbers’ (background checks) is committing a crime. For liquidations, look to cars. If you sell me your car do I have to show you proof I know how to drive or that my license wasn’t taken due to DUIs? I would also like to make this point… guns are not nukes. I have been shot at, and had a few guns put In my face I took most of them away for myself. I have also been hit by a car and would take any gun pointing at my face over somebody trying to run me down with a car. I do think we could expand on some of the information that disqualifies one through background checks. However given the slow convoluted nature of our government it’s hard to say for sure they wouldn’t just end up keeping someone from buying something they have every right to own. And for ownership… it was made very clear through writings after the constitution was signed there was to be no distinction from civilian or government access to firearms. Mostly do to the fact the private business were had to deal with the same threats as the government itself and so did those who worked for them or had there own homesteads. (Same as the government, not ruled by). Modern case law and interpretations differ on that however. I do think some concessions could be made, but in all honesty we should have as much right and access to guns as anything else.

    The problem is complex, and there is no one solution to the violence in this country. We need a task force that will look at all aspects of this problem. As a mental health provider,
    I can say that most of these people who engage in mass shootings do not use mental health services, they do not believe they have a problem. There are plenty of mentally ill people in other countries, but because of their gun control laws, this kind of violence does not happen. We are the only country in the world where we have shootings every day. We in mental health need to do more outreach and education about emotional regulation and help people understand and cope with their anger and rage.
