Dummy: Mexico has far more gun homicides than the USA but LEGAL gun ownership is strictly limited. Guns are illegal in Brazil where they have among the highest gun homicide rate in the world. Switzerland has an extremely high gun ownership rate and very low gun crime statistics. If you remove the gun crime in major cities like Chicago, Detroit, Camden, Newark, Philly, Oakland, Baltimore, Saint Louis our gun homicide rates are on par with most Western European countries. Not that you'll actually research this....

      1. NRA gets triggered that a CDC-funded independent study gets media attention and revealed that the presence of a firearm in household increases risk of homicide. *FACT.*
      2. NRA lobbies Republicunts to *DISBAND THE CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention* in 1996. *FACT.*
      3. NRA successfully gets law enacted to PREVENT CDC from using funds that might lead to -- or promote the reality of -- a logical conclusion that gun control might be needed as a result of increased homicide risk from presence of a firearm in a household. *FACT.*
(It might be argued the Republican assholes who made the Dickey Amendment didn't make their wording clear on this, but anyone with half a brain can reach this conclusion.)
      4. NRA successfully lobbies Republicunts in Congress to *cut $2.6 Million from the CDC budget*. THE EXACT AMOUNT THEY HAD DEDICATED THE PREVIOUS YEAR FOR FIREARM INJURY RESEARCH. *FACT.*
      5. Firearm-homicide link researcher admits about federal workers at CDC: "no federal employee was willing to risk his or her career or the agency's funding". *FACT.*

Popular vote is not fair to people who are not urban, or are not part of the (even slight) majority. Nor is it fair to small states. Which is why we don't have a popular vote. the views of small states and non-urban areas matter in an electoral system.
Unless every state had an equal population, and there was an equal split of all demographics, (urban, rural, etc) a popular vote wouldn't be fair.
Someone living in a high rise, or in a suburban area, for instance, probably won't care too much about whether pipelines and trains can just take people's land for their own. Because it won't affect them in any way.

I mean, this call up your congressman stuff?? That couldn't have existed when the country was formed. It had to have evolved as part of phones becoming something that most people have. But what did the government do before then to factor in public opinion? Nothing? Is the government even factoring in public opinion in the first place, or is that part just a modern illusion to make us feel like we can do something about it?
And if our opinion is supposed to factor in, why don't they set up an SMS service, where we can just have upcoming bill info sent to us and then we text how we feel about it, and it's stored in a computer? I mean, how has no one proposed such a thing in a serious manner if public opinion is supposed to matter?

Your colleagues might know how you voted but your constituents are far less likely to find out. But if 1/5 of the committee disagrees with the chair's call, they will conduct a recorded roll call vote and get the exact number of ayes and nos. I assume that must have happened for at least some of these examples.

Its crazy. Here in Canada we were able to even buy AR 15s up to 2020. Funny enough we havent had a mass shooting everyday.
Its because to get a gun in Canada you NEED to pass a national background check AND safety program.
Bans alone dont work. You need to do the educational and registry too.

I live in a country that has very strict gun laws (You need to pass a background check to legally obtain a gun and show that there is a necessity for you to own one, i.e. because you're a hunter, as well as undergo training to obtain a licence to purchase firearms) and I don't think that that calliber of gun laws will ever pass in the US, due to cultural differences.
However, you'd think that it would be common sense that people have to have a clean criminal record and undergo some basic gun safety training before being allowed to own one. Nothing too restrictive, just the equivalent of a driver's license for guns. Will it completely stop gun violence? Of course not, since the amount of violent crime in the US goes deeper than every idiot being allowed to purchase a gun. But it would, at the very least, reduce it.

It amazes me that in this day and age we still hear about mass shooting sprees and the fact nothing gets done about it. We had the Dunblane Primary School shooting in 1996 and that was enough to lead to change. Common sense prevailed and we haven't had small children slaughtered by a piece of shit with a gun since then. We have terrorists bombing us and trying to tear our nation apart, but we don't have mass shootings - enough is enough, surely the people can see the need for gun control?

I’m British and 17, my whole life has been influenced by acts of terror and mass shooting, and yet every time I hear of one on the news I become less and less effected. I’ve become so use to seeing acts of terror on the news whether in be Paris, London, Manchester, Orlando or Las Vegas I’ve become numb, I remember sitting and crying while watching the Paris shootings in 2015, but since then multiple more attack’s have happened. I’ve found myself becoming less and less personally effected with each event. In Britain we don’t have guns so the idea of a mass shooting occurring seems far away, which technically it is, but all countries suffer attacks at there own citizens hands, so my thoughts and prayers are with the families today. But I don’t understand why nothing is changing, my generation are becoming use to acts of terror on the news each and every year - and yet nothing has changed. In Britain after the 1996 Dunblane massacre guns were more highly regulated and since we’ve had no mass shooting, in America in the last 2 years thousands have died due to gun violence, and I’m not American so
I don’t understand the constitution and the gun laws, but each day people are losing family members to unneeded gun violence. I shouldn’t be use to mass shootings cause they shooting occur at the rate they do. So while I hope but doubt that this event will cause change my prayers are with the families who have lost people due to this unneeded act.

    • @TorianTammas
      @TorianTammas 7 лет назад +2

Amy Simpson - The answer is not simple, but the main cause is fear. A lot of people in the US fear their neighbors. Many live in fear from the government or from others trying to shoot them. Only people who are frightened by someone or something feel the need to defend and run around armed. So when people get mentally unhinged may it be rage or even a mental condition they use a gun.

Couple of things - The 2nd amendment was created in 1791, 150 years before Hitler. It had nothing to do with anything he did. If you have evidence to the contrary, please show it, but I could find nothing linking the 2nd Amendment in any way to Hitler's actions. It was created so that the people of the US could defend themselves against the government, but it's based on a world that looked much different than ours does today. Imagine creating a law today that is expected to manage weapons created 230 years from now. It's ludicrous.
Even so, I (and most other people pushing for reasonable gun laws) are not attempting to destroy the 2nd Amendment. We simply want to make it more difficult for untrained 19 year olds with mental health issues and well known racist behavior to obtain assault rifles.

I am a member of the NRA yet this sickens me. bear in mind i am only a member cause I enjoy shooting guns as a sport and i have to be a member to exercise that sport at my local gun range. if it really comes down to it, if the only way to keep the world safe is to give up my guns i will. Gun violence is a serious issue that NEEDS to be investigated in full and if you are an NRA member who opposes that notion then you are a fool plain and simple. its not just cause there is a fully justifiable reason to study thus issue, its also because if you oppose this you WILL get run over by the bus of social change at some point. the difference is is that when that bus comes through (and it WILL come through) the difference between people being able to keep their guns and everyone loosing that privilege rests on the shoulders of what you do now. will you be responsible with that privilege or not? if you really do think guns are a RIGHT then fuck you and the horse you rode in on. it is, and always has been, a privilege.

58 killed - October 1, 2017 - In Las Vegas, 64-year-old Stephen Paddock of Mesquite, Nevada, sprays gunfire on a crowd of 22,000 concertgoers from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, killing 58 people and injuring almost 500. Witnesses say the gunshots last between 10 and 15 minutes. Officers breach Paddock's hotel room to find him dead. Authorities believe Paddock killed himself and that he acted alone.
49 killed - June 12, 2016 - Omar Saddiqui Mateen, 29, opens fire inside Pulse, a gay nightclub, in Orlando. At least 49 people are killed and more than 50 are injured. Police shoot and kill Mateen during an operation to free hostages officials say he was holding at the club.
32 killed - April 16, 2007 - Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. A gunman, 23-year-old student Seung-Hui Cho, goes on a shooting spree killing 32 people in two locations and wounding an undetermined number of others on campus. The shooter then commits suicide.
27 killed - December 14, 2012 - Sandy Hook Elementary School - Newtown, Connecticut. Adam Lanza, 20, guns down 20 children, ages six and seven, and six adults, school staff and faculty, before turning the gun on himself. Investigating police later find Nancy Lanza, Adam's mother, dead from a gunshot wound.
Only a few from a shockingly large list i found online

I see a lot of people against Democrats and Liberals. Not all of us are completely opposed to guns, I am a Democrat/Liberal myself and am not against guns. Look, we just want tighter laws to cut back on shootings. Yes, in the right hands, guns save lives. I am not denying that. However, if the gun shops slip up, that could end up in another shooting. I want to see this country keep succeeding, but the NRA is holding us back due to laws they put in order. Of course the NRA can keep existing, but it needs to have some power taken away. It’s a little too easy to get a gun these days.

two thirds of all gun deaths in America are suicides. only difference with Paddack is he chose to kill others rather than just himself. We have a mental heath problem NOT a gun problem. if you help improve mental health you help more than just mass shootings- you help prevent suicides, homicides, rape, violent altercations etc. you try to pass gun control laws not only will they not work they WILL make America less safe. the shear number of guns in America means that anyone who wants a gun can find one.
Liberals are retards, they favor ending the "war on drugs" because it hasn't worked but they want a "war on guns"
Mexico has very very s stricked gun control where it is not legal for citizens to own fire arms- over 100,000 people died in drug cartel violence in the late 00's people literally could not go out of there homes becase armed gangs ran the streets.

    Ready for something absolutely depressing?
We're in the middle of a pandemic that has claimed almost 135,000 US citizens.
And we've still surpassed 2013 and 2014 for mass shootings in a single year. If numbers continue on trend (284 mass shootings in 191 days, average of 1.48 shootings a day), we will surpass 500 mass shootings by the end of the year. Beating last year's record by over 100 shootings.
