    By Trump's logic, I have a massive, massive trade deficit with Safeway. I buy all manner of goods from them, but they have purchased NOTHING AT ALL FROM ME FOR OVER 30 YEARS NOW!!! To fix this, I will now tax myself every time I buy something there. That'll show them who's boss!

    • @EcoMouseChannel
      @EcoMouseChannel 6 лет назад +69

      But Safeway was never in a position to buy anything from you, unless you are a food producer or distributor. You are just the end user. China, can and does buy US made goods. Just not nearly as much as we buy from them. Plus, they do also cheat and steal ideas and don't honor patent laws or intellectual property.
      Case in point, you can see right now for your very eyes: www.kickstarter.com/projects/908228738/finalstraw-the-worlds-first-collapsible-reusable-s
      The Final Straw was a concept by this American based start-up. They ran a successful campaign, and have an innovative product. A foldable metal straw. Well, no sooner than a week after their campaign closed, were copycat products for sale on Amazon, straight out of China. Copied even their marketing photos, slogans, and even the case design. And they are already shipping months ahead of the American company.
      And to top it off, there's even knock-off companies warning about other knock-offs of the same product. www.amazon.com/Stainless-Keychain-Collapsible-Reusable-Beststraw/dp/B07DJ66PB1
      Trump may not know the nuances of global trade and economics... but he is right about one thing... the sleeping giant is slowly taking over nearly every industry. And they did it not through innovation and hard work, or allowing their populous to be free and democratic, or having a thriving economy that was born out of the free market making the decisions. But through nefarious means, lying, stealing and cheating... all while ignoring the plight of their people and continuing to use it's populous as dutiful work slaves, building the empire of China.

      Eco Mouse, that FinalStraw story is just a great example of a poorly thought-out marketing plan. I mean, did they even have a patent? Such a simple concept was doomed to get copied! Crowdfunding the project was just idiotic, they should have kept it as secretive as possible until proper manufacturing and distribution channels were established, advertising was prepared to launch and the product was ready to go to market.

      Ugh, his "writers" are just comedians, one of his main writers came from college humor for example. It's disgusting that people take this show seriously. It's a comedy show masquerading as a knowledgeable current events program. They take a subject an average person is uneducated about and reaffirm their preconceived thoughts on the subject, instead of dedicating the countless hours it takes to completely understand a topic enough to come close enough to the truth. This piece sounds correct to you because you have no knowledge about China or trade, neither do his writers. They often take 15 second soundbites and take it out of context to create a narrative you already agree with. This show has done immense damage because it has given average people a sense of truth, when their show is merely a projection of truth based on the sheltered and uninformed perspective of people who tell jokes for a living.

    The biggest problem with Trump's approach to trade is that he's stuck in the zero sum game mentality. It's how he's approached his business dealings (and seemingly his whole life): every encounter, every deal has a winner and a loser. But that's not how trade is supposed to work. When you go to the store and buy something, do you always assume that either you're screwing the store over or it's screwing you over? No. As long as the sale was made in good faith and neither side pulled any dishonest shenanigans, you got something you needed/wanted and the store got some money. Everybody wins.

      How do you expect these US made products to be affordable, the resources would go up in price and tariffs by other countries would give American products no chance on the global market. It is basically a tax on your own people. Its Ironic how China shipping food to the US is a big problem while subsidized American farmers happily do the same to Central and South America. The US consumes more than it produces, thats why you have a trade deficit.

    • @Sven-kj2uh
      @Sven-kj2uh 6 лет назад +7

      My point is That even though tariffs would decrease imports in the US, it would also decrease exports from the US. The tactic that the current administration is trying would only work if other countries wouldn't retaliate. Even worse is the fact that these countries will have to fight the US only in this trade war, while the US will have to fight a lot of big economical powers. Wich means they have a way better chance of finding a different market while the US would suffer the most.
      Also the difference in tariffs is not as big as portrayed by the Trump administration. There are numerous products where the tariffs in the US are actually higher. On average the EU's tariffs are not that far from the US, and Canada's average is lower than the US so i get see why Trump calls the EU "worse than China on trade" and why he is mentioning Canada at all.
      Dont get me wrong, i think China is a problem. But this is not the way to solve it.

Maybe someone who has watched some youtube videos and read a subreddit, but nothing even remotely resembling a substantiated economic discussion has been written here by you. I'm not sure how to even start assessing your point since it all just sounds like a rant by your weird uncle at Thanksgiving. Trade economics is extremely complex, and you are grossly oversimplifying cause and effect in your wild meanderings. If you want this confirmed for you, considering the breadth and complexity of what you are talking about here, I would recommend you read the complete syllabus of a 4-year economics degree, followed by a post-grad lit review of international economics, at which point I would consider you qualified and to have redeemed yourself enough to have an opinion on the matter. I award you 0 points and may God have mercy on your soul.

    “Fun” fact about Peter Navarro, he was my professor at UC Irvine, where he ‘teaches’ an online class based on his RUclips series of videos that is supposed to be about economics and trade with China. I had no clue about who he was or any of his books going in, I only knew it was a course that satisfied my management minor. But instead he made us memorize the amount of Chinese aircraft carries, the amount of potential mines in the water between China and Taiwan, how China might launch missiles at the US etc. There was NOTHING about trade policies at all, and yes he made us write an essay that basically had his zero sum game in mind, and discuss how American Fortune 500 companies with setups in China would be forced to move back to the US at some point. My essay basically proved him wrong, and I got a passing grade, and no comments. We also had weekly ‘blog posts’ where we would have to write about something that related to the class, which meant a lot of people got poor marks when they cited the benefits of US-China trade. That’s mostly because a lot of the students in the class were Chinese international students who were also confused by the objective of the course, and didn’t understand how completely tone deaf he seemed to be. Anything that went against him he COMPLETELY ignored and pretended wasn’t handed in. My friend even ended up failing the course despite doing more than enough work and handing in all their work on time, purely because they criticized the contents of the course. He has tenure and emeritus status, so he’s basically impossible to get rid of, and I’m assuming he’ll come prancing back on his high horse to keep on doing his propaganda course as soon as trump is out. Hopefully he loses his status, funding, or right to teach a class, but who knows...

    I live in Alabama; yes, _that_ Alabama, I know that's not the most credible opening line to making any point. But Alabama used to be an aviation state; it made a lot of successes, and some mistakes, but the business eventually flowed elsewhere...that is, until we fought tooth-and-nail to get it back here. We finally have some steady business going with Airbus and the like, and we had to spend a premium to get them to consider us; the problem is, with the recent trade 'disputes,' there are rumors that they're considering the cost of doing business with us to be too high versus the overall benefits. Considering aviation and anything within that ballpark needs raw resources like, for example, *the ones that these tariffs are hitting as brutally as they are,* then that's not just bad for Alabama, that's bad for _any_ state where these kinds of business help the economy thrive.
    Alabama's finally becoming an aviation state again. We've gotten our pride back. But these short-sighted 'disputes' are gonna hurt us, and hard. Bear in mind, I live in a state where a lot of the people who may very well lose their jobs _voted for this man._ I'm sick to my stomach thinking about how they're getting fucked over like this.

Therefore the trade isn't really fair to American steel producers so the tariff is to protect them in an unfair market. I don't know why John didn't mention that, but it is relatively well reported. You know, people should really learn that when they stick their junk in places it doesn't belong, bad things happen, so if you don't care for politics and do not pay attention to them, maybe don't vote because this is what happens....

    When John was talking about the BMW factory he also could have taken Mercedes' factory in Tuscaloosa. About 10 years ago the dad of my girlfriend moved there from germany to help expanding the factory because Mercedes released a lot of new cars since then. As far as i know the factory itself employs 3.000 people and another 7.000 jobs depend on the MB factory (those people work for smaller companies that produce and deliver parts). I recently talked to her dad and he said that if these taxes and tariffs keep rising the production costs will reach a too high level, so Mercedes will be forced to move their production to China. Good Job Trump.

      There are a couple of things in addition to Trump, which are troublesome. E.g. Germany wants to build NorthStream2, because it is of huge economical, ecological and strategic benefit. The USA tries to stop this project ever since. Nearly everybody is pissed off the by the USA torpedoing the Iran-Deal (this was not Trump alone) and the regime changes in the Middle east are not perceived well by a lot of European citizens (it led to the refugee crisis). Coming back to the Iran-Deal the if the USA continuous to succeed to enforce US-Sanction on EU-Iranian business relationships the EU may have to make sure this cannot happen again, because it's citizens may be demanding it. It is not acceptable that the US is able to enforce US-Law on EU-Companies. This is a huge long therm risk the US is taking here.
      The US is pissing off some very valuable allies at the moment and needs to be very carefull to not step over the point of no return.
      After each act of Donald Trump the transatlantic faction is pronouncing how important the USA are as allies and partners and so on ... and the pro Russia faction is rolling on the ground, laughing. The mood is swinging to looking for reliable partners. And the opinion to make the EU independent of the NATO is a lot more appealing for more people now.

    Not only does BMW built the X3, X4, X5, X6, X7, X5 M, and X6 M in South Carolina, but Mercedes-Benz builds several models in Tuscalosa, Alabama, and Volkswagen builds cars in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and has done since the 1970s. The whole idea of trade is not a "zero sum game" but rather an "everybody benefits" scenario. Anyone who took a high school economics course is familiar with this example: Say there is a country that specializes in making a food item (let's just say butter) while another specializes in making an appliance (let's say a toaster). Both countries make both products, but the reason why they would trade the product they specialize in is to gain more of the one they don't, which benefits both country's economies in the long-run. If they both had this mentality of a "zero sum game" then neither country would be willing to trade their item and just expect the other country to give them the other product for no reason, which is not how trade works. This is essentially something President Trump never considered or understood about basic economics (in addition to things like retaliatory tariffs), and it still amazes me when people argue that he is a good businessman or understands the economy, despite the fact he went bankrupt 6 times.

    • @Blottingpaper
      @Blottingpaper 6 лет назад +24

      Only issue is that a lot of strongman type leaders think the only strategies are ones that are fundamentally Zero sums games. Some of the less educated ones may not know the term, but" Me win big, you lose lots" is enough for them to understand. It seems like a lot of forms of society are increasingly moving toward ZSG as the only way to move forward, where compromise is seen as weakness and working towards a common cause together as outright treachery.

      Jesse Torres You have a lot of comments here but I'm enjoying them. Quite curious, do you have a background in economics? Or just a fancy for the subject? Naturally, it's important regardless but most tend to keep to their own sphere in the realm of economic changes, such as the part about the steel worker in the video getting back his prior job so he was knowledgeable about global trade that benefitted him. The subject and full implications weren't of his interest/concern.

While I wouldn't describe myself as an expert in economics, I did well in the courses and have been paying attention to any news story about Trump's tax plans and economic policy since they impact American society as a whole. My dad works at a church with one of the fastest growing youth programs in the country, and they were trying to raise money for an expansion to offer after school care and more classroom space. The project overall was going to be around $1,000,000, which they were able to raise through pledges and donations and some loans. However, when the trade war started, the price of steel jumped and the project suddenly became $1,250,000, which they could not afford. They now have to wait until the next election and hope that the price goes down.
    I can’t help but feel like Trump is actively destroying his reputation with his base supporters.
    EDIT: I’d like to add that my dad was a Trump voter in the elections (not because he liked him, but because he didn’t like either), but no longer actually supports him in office. Moderate conservatives are the ones Trump is loosing and I think that will hurt him in the long run. He won’t loose far right conservatives the same way democratic leaders won’t likely loose far left liberals.

It's hard to get through to people with the real facts when he is attacked 24/7 so they think it's all bullshit and don't discern fact from fiction. I do find it hilarious that somehow, in a government with all 3 branches dominated by the GOP, Democrats are still the cause for inaction. And people believe it.

    A couple of points:
    1. "Dangerous Rock" IS really the first hit on Amazon.
    2. When discussing the GDP it should be noted that since our GDP is the size of the next three largest GDPs combined, we have A LOT more money to spend, so unless we save or invest it, which we don't, we're going to have a deficit of some kind anyway.
    3. If the goal of competing is to "create jobs," there are a number of other options. For example, that $1.5 trillion tax giveaway to corps and billionaires, the majority of which was poured into stock buybacks that benefited the investor class, could have been spent on single-payer healthcare, which would have reduced healthcare costs for employers, thus reducing the cost of hiring employees (though truth be told they probably would have used the savings for stock buybacks...).
    4. Except for periods of recession, the unemployment rate was, is, and will continue to be low. "More jobs" is not the problem with the American economy. The problem was, is, and will continue to be that middle-class wages have been stagnant since the 1970s. You might be thinking "if companies were competing for labor because they are exporting more they'll be forced to raise wages," think again (and read more). Instead of paying for higher labor, they'll take the money and do what they've done since the 70s: move overseas or spend it on automation.
