99.9% of what Americans do kn Middle east is wrong. You should probably let that area manage itself because it's getting worse and worse because of you.
@min xiong It's good to be critical, but your argument is lost when you throw out bullshit numbers (i.e. "causing millions to die"). That's a completely false statement. I'm also pretty sure you haven't verified that the US has blocked any aid to Yemen or is actually providing midair refueling to the Saudis.
Mainly do to algorithms dood in the end Oliver is propaganda. Even when I'd watch foreign new on NHK I'd see their agenda. One main thing is they want Free Trade. So hard
John provides educational information I was missing. I don't agree with the opinions in all his videos. I do agree most of the time. I'd think less of him if he were a complete sycophant to my world view.
I've watched coverage of this from most of the major news outlets. They've all been asking the same question: "How did they think this wouldn't be noticed?" John Oliver is the first to air my first thought: this is done so obviously, they're clearly sending a message. And they know/think they can get away with it. - and he's a friggin' comedian, not a news reporter. Kudos John
It's the arrogance of the powerful. The current White House occupant demonstrates it daily (often more than once in a single day). I'm also surprised yet not surprised that many (not all) in the so-called "mainstream media" haven't expressed more concentrated coverage (and editorially, outrage). As for John and Jane Doe, the "average Americans", do they even know where Saudi Arabia is, much less care? (How quickly people have forgotten that 15 of the 19 terrorists responsible for the 9/11 carnage in the USA were Saudi citizens!!!)
So it cant be a set up? Is that 100% off the table? Couldn't they just murder him away from the consulate without causing all this ruckus? How can you carrie judgments without hard evidence? Would put a man in jail based on "c'mon its was clearly you". What about "innocent till proven guilty"? Hypocritical to say the least
@@ebdey In my view all options are on the table, incl. a setup. Several could have the means and reasons to do so. Not sure if Jamal Khashoggi would be a very obvious target though. It also strikes me as a bit far fetched to then do it in that place and manner. If you want to plant evidence for a setup, this simply seems like overkill (in lack of a better word). Furthermore, the Saudi's insistence on Jamal both entering and leaving the consulate without at least trying to provide proof of the latter, seems to further underline that they don't really care that much. And if the Saudi's are indeed behind it, and they simply wanted him dead, there would be much better ways to get away with it. So sure, all options are on the table, but imo sending a strong message seems the most plausible.
The way I see it, Picking the most plausible and speak about it using words such as "clearly" and "obviously" is so close to dismissing scenarios. Lets wait and see how things play out.
Fair point. One has to be careful pointing to the obvious in these days when little is obvious. Again, it was only my first thought. Like yours might have been that it was a setup. I was mostly surprised that the main media only saw it as an incredibly poor cover up (asking how the Saudis could be so stupid), rather than considering it might be deliberately obviously executed - either by the Saudis, or as you suggest, a third party. Again, I find the Saudis' response highly suspicious. Eg. claiming that there's no video proof of him leaving coz their cameras only livestream, when there's recorded footage of him entering. And it's a consulate.. So sure, should be deemed innocent until proven otherwise, but when the whole world is pointing fingers, you'd think they'd do a bit more to claim their innocence than just referring to a Trump'ish "trust me".

I am doing the digital nomad thing and have a Resident VISA for the country I am spending this year in. Each year I get a Resident VISA for the country I am living in that year. I am having a great and productive time and my host countries have treated me well. However, I am a citizen of the USA. If I get in trouble, I will be contacting the US Embassy. To expect any other country, besides the country that I am a citizen of to help me would be foolish.
Alexander Canella Throughout most of it, but many of the protections afforded by the constitution and bill of rights specifically says “people”. The fact that citizens is used elsewhere should only highlight the fact that they wanted protections to extend to everyone who considered America home. And I like that sentiment, honestly. If you love America and want to see it get better, and want to call it home... then even if we differ in opinion I call you brother, and would fight to protect you
There is a huge difference between having a visa to stay in a country for a year and having permanent residence status (aka. a green card in the US). Permanent residents have almost the same rights as citizens and can become citizens after a few years.
If you watch the clip closely you will see Trump already had the concept of one brutal murder vs $110 billion being acceptable in his head before even confirming Kashoggi was only a US permanent resident. He could have been a citizen and Trump would’ve said the same lines.

@Hal Jordan a pretty distorted kind of religion, when all the evil conquers the house of god. When trump holds the bible, it is just ridiculous. He don't want to work for money. Unfortunate coincidence, that many people chooses the priest as a profession, because they say, they don't want to work too. So they team up, to do something truly selfish. While many priest, who truly believes in god, feels disgusted, to see this happening. Religion should be about how to respect each other, politics should be about how to help each other, and create circumstances, where we live in a minimum level of harmony with the nature, so we can survive.

John Oliver brings up a good point in regards to oppressive regimes and how much they can get away with. The answer is pretty much anything. Saudi Arabia isn’t the only example here, just look at China. China is currently facing growing criticism over its persecution of some Muslim minority groups (especially Uighur Muslims), huge numbers of whom are allegedly being held in internment camps. Even though they are facing criticism, we all know nothing’s going to happen. China has been know to have human rights violations in the past, and has publicly admitted that if any Country has a problem with its human rights issues, China doesn’t want to do business with them. In a global economy where China is the top leader in manufacturing, no other Country is going to stand up against it and its a sad realization. Oppressive regimes have and always will get away with anything and that’s not going to change unless we all come together and stand up to what we believe is the right thing to do!
Saudi did the worst in my opinion killing journalist in an Embassy. The choice of place makes it worst though all oppressive regimes are terrible. And they seem to be growing with Neanderthals right wingers coming to power.
Add Thailand and Burma onto the least of countries with oppressive regimes that can get away with it. But here its mostly because the rest of the world never hears about it.
I mean, to be fair it's because of almost 100 years of uighur separatist groups fighting various chinese governments including the current one. America did worse to ethnic Japanese, American citizens during WW2
IN THE END... it not about religion... it just those big government hiding behind "china" "saudi arabia" will do what ever they want to be in power.... it just that disgusting creature hide behind human skin abusing power..... hoping one day when times comes those people being oppress will get their justice....

I'll call it progressive when women in Saudi Arabia no longer needs male guardians to decide on their lives. It's great that they are now allowed to drive, but at the same time it feels like a publicity stunt, let's hope it's actually a step on the way to equality. Now I'm going to take a moment to appreciate that I live in a part of the world where I can do and say almost anything I want.
I bet you did not hear about how many cars of women have been burned down by "unidentified persons". Saudi men are much more insecure than you can imagine.
To me it looks very much like a publicity stunt. I mean 'women can't drive' was one of the first things you thought about when thinking about the country. The prince ended that, but he also arrested the women he fought for it, so he didn't have to share credit.
5 years later and the guardianship laws have been severely rolled back such that women can work, live alone, travel, open a bank account, possess all their own personal documents, get divorced and much more without the need for guardianship permission. Will you call it progressive now?
I wish it wasn't so, but my home country Germany is also selling lots of weapons to Saudi Arabia. Money rules the world and if innocent people in Yemen are butchered with german or american weapons, it doesn't seem to concern those people who earn money of the arms deals, in one way or another. Shame on them, shame on all of us. Increase the peace!
Love those aholes argument "If we don't do it others will. Demand and supply", and then claim moral authority at the same time. One could justify anything with that. "There is huge demand for child pornography and child prostitution, the others won't stop doing it, so why shouldn't we start with it. It's big business, think of all the tax money" And then pretend like the entire economy of the country is sitting on weapons deals. As if. Jobs will be lost, boo-hoo. It's a drop in the bucket and those involved are a super minoriy. Like the fishing industry in Britain which only has 12k people out of a population of 65 mio working for it, but destroying entire oceans, and livelyhoods of other countries.
Moos P. - yes. The so-called world leaders who are so wealthy it defies comprehension for some reason have to stir the pots constantly. The affect seems to be that we peasants, so easily manipulated to hate anyone across arbitrary borders, can be made to kill other people's kids using expensive weapons happily supplied to both sides by wealthy arms dealers. I despise our species. Most days I wish for a big ole asteroid to wipe down the planet and send us back to living in caves in small groups of about 8 people. This global shit won't ever stop. IT's especially heinous given the fact that most of these wealthy/powerful individuals have more wealth than they can use in FIFTY LIFETIMES. Yet they continue to spin the wheel. Why is that? Why can they not go home and play with their gold encrusted toys and leave the world in peace?
As a Dane I can tell you my country has firms selling surveillance technology to monitor ANY resistance within the country. The whole western world is basically in on this. Even pacifist Sweden is a huge weapon producer, Europe should develop its own security policies and stop funding dictatorships and terrorism around the world in the name of spreading western values.
Thank you you are now my history teacher, and you opened my eyes about government leaders and made me 😢 cry.But it's its better then not knowing what really horable people we have running our country.
True. But we can judge the leaders by their worst actions. Also, those who are not standing behind those politics, apparently have to fear getting butchered. Sooo, I'm not going to go to Saudi Arabia to enjoy the peoples hospitality anytime time soon.
tornoutlaw I’m not talking about it as a tourist attraction, but just to illustrate that people don’t like what their leaders do. The worst part to not be able to say anything. Mostly no one in the US approves of Trump, but for the meantime you have to go along with his plans and hope that cleaning his leftovers will be possible. Similarly in Brazil &China. The UK still suffers underneath Brexit and the royal family needs to have its lavish lifestyle.
Its always 4.20(AM) somewhere. @Amelia Carneiro Zhu Lets be real for a second. Irony and sarcasm really don't work well in *text-only* communication. These are pretty much exclusively spoken language attributes, and requires either very good knowledge of that writer's particular use of language and his/hers affinities, or a very clear context setup. Chatting with friends and family we know their language quirks and affinities intimately, _and_ most often use accompanying imagery to set up, contextualize or point out irony and sarcasm - and even _then_ we some times don't get it. Satire compounds all of these language tools and cues, is _heavily_ contextualized, and _always_ use specific cues to make it clear to the reader/viewer that its satire. Not every reader or viewer might pick up on them, but any half-ass-decent employ these - they _are_ there. And they *need* to be, otherwise any satirist leave themselves wide open to lawsuits and sometimes even prosecution. This one employed none of these. Its just a poor execution of an attempt at a (seemingly sarcastic) joke. I wouldn't say it failed miserably, but it definitely fell flat. That what usually happens when the sarcasm is more important than the joke. Oh well, live and learn. So what if I don't know what "Ragnarok" means. Its not the end of the world.
Oh good lord that would be interesting but they are probably staying away from that issue because it’s so sensitive and picking a side would look really bad
Can you imagine?! A journalist murdered in Saudi's embassy in Turkey!! Not in Saudi Arabia but in their consulate in another country!! Systematic criminal activity whole a lot next level!!
@M G You're right about the territory of an embassy legally belonging to the embassy's owner, not the host country. It's why the Turkish government probably came up with that ridiculous story about Khashoggi's Apple watch recording his murder, to cover for the fact that they were illegally bugging the Saudi Arabian consulate. I do believe Saudi Arabia murdered Khashoggi, but Turkey's cover story about the Apple watch unfortunately gives Saudi Arabia fodder for distracting propaganda.

Just to clarify, the Mohammed joke in the beginning was based on the fact that the prophet Mohammed is typically not depicted anywhere out of respect for him, right?
Prohibitions against depicting the Prophet Mohammed may mystify many non-Muslims, but it speaks to a central tenet of Islam: the worship of God alone. Nothing in the Quran, Islam's holy book, strictly bars portrayals of Mohammed. But the faith, like the Hebrew Bible's Ten Commandments, has long discouraged any graven images, scholars say, to avoid the temptation toward idol worship. [CNN news]

Thank you for discussing this important issue of the impact Saudi Arabia has had on Yemen John! It seems to me that very few people in the news media (liberal, conservative, moderate, or comedian) either sees this as an important issue or (at the very least) feels it is too controversial to discuss it in full detail. Our nation's relationship with Saudi Arabia has harmed their neighbors, resulting in war, a famine, and an immigration ban for Yemen, and yet not enough average Americans seem to know about these issues.
What about what happens in Syria? are turning a blind eye on that!? or is it because that you can't oppose Russia -who are supporting Assad regime- you won't say anything about it. I mean the situation there is literally a ruler killing his own people with internationally prohibited chemical weapons! and no body talks about it. But when Saudi Arabia decides to fire back to protect its national security you say thay it's a crime?! Did you know that the hothis in Yemen use ********children as their soldiers******* As for the war in Yemen it is similar in many ways to to the US false war against communism in Vietnam, except that this one has to do with national security of Saudi Arabia and Yemen it self. How can you say that Saudi Arabia is bombing civilians when their enemy is using innocent children as their soldiers!!!???
"how can you say that Saudi Arabia is bombing civilians" As an example: because they bombed a school bus. "Assad is killing his own people with chemical weapons" The promised proof of that hasn't been presented. It would of course be dumb to use chemical weapons in a position as that of Assad, but you know.
Money money money. I live in Spain. The Socialist government almost decided to kind of stop some bomb shipments to Saudi Arabia because of Yemen. Then the Saudis said they'd cancel a contract for some frigates being built in a Spanish shipbuilding yard if the bombs weren't delivered. Suddenly it was "never mind, we'll send you the bombs." The government even justified it by sayjng these were "smart bombs" so they wouldn't hit civilians. The USA is by far the biggest player, but everyone is selling to the Saudis and turning a blind eye at the same time.
The US was able to give the Saudi's a pass for their roll behind 9/11 and you think they will give a crap about some journalist who wasn't even a US citizen? Lol.
Torben Rudgaard Exactly. Bush and the US Congress (Both Democrats and Republicans) let that shit slide and the Saudi's get off scotfree just so they could continue to get money and oil flowing in. Now we are suppose to pretend that somehow this particular murder is worse then all that and some sort tipping point for bad Saudi behavior? Give me a damn break.
At least it's a start that john oliver is talking about them at all. Aside from jimmy dore, I don't see many others on the left talking about the awful governments the US has been doing business with. But for some reaon everyone gets mad at the boogeyman in the white house for being open to being freinds with russia. Very few things in life are black and white, but one of them is, either working with mass murderers is ok, or it'ls not. @@exantiuse497you're absolutely right, but in this case, liberals don't even understand what they disagree with. Here's a few examples...after the 2016 election, I heard many shocked liberals exclaim "how could anybody have voted for Donald Trump?" This reveals a major lack of understanding. Even the shock itself was an expression of liberal ignorance toward conservatism. Contrarily, I didn't hear a single conservative say "how could anybody have voted for Hillary Clinton?" This is because conservatives DO understand liberalism. Another example: liberals have taken a few particularly bad elements of conservatism and have taken those things to be the whole. Thus, liberals have lumped all conservatives together into a category of racists, misogynists, homophobes, anti-immigrants, etc. Now don't get me wrong - racism, misogyny, etc. are very real and dangerous attitudes on the extreme right, but most liberals have reduced all conservatism to these undesirable things, which reveals another major lack of understanding. And make no mistake, liberal ignorance is not harmless - now we have the PC police and social justice warriors on the extreme left trying to censor what we can and can't say, which is utterly detrimental to our free society. But is conservatism as a whole racist? Of course not, but the average liberal can't even hear the word "conservative" without conjuring images of torches and white robes. This is because liberals don't understand that the heart of conservatism is not about racism but about the individual liberty that allows them to vote and engage in these arguments in the first place. On the other hand, conservatives have done a rather outstanding job at pointing out the flaws and logical holes of liberal ideology. This is why they can so easily rile up the liberals, which is their favorite form of entertainment. Unfortunately, because liberals do not understand conservative thinking, they have failed to show conservatives the holes in their conservative ideology, even though many such obvious holes exist. Instead they hammer on racism, social injustice, etc, publicly shame people on social media for being "racist," which misses the mark by a long shot. So great is liberal disdain of conservatism that their arguments are always dismissive and never appreciative of the several valuable things about conservatism that have made our country the greatest in world history. Being on the liberal side myself and wishing liberals many future electoral successes, I hope that liberals take some time to re-examine conservative ideology and see if there might be something of value after all.
@@rodblues6832 Thank you for a civilized response, I expected insults and nothing to back up your claims, as people tend to react in this channel ;-) I disagree with your first point somewhat, though, people saying "how could anyone vote for Trump" doesn't necessarily indicate lack of understanding and may be an indication of disbelief and anger: "how could this happen, I was so sure we'd win", a defence mechanism of sorts. And on the other hand someone *believing* they understand someone doesn't automatically mean they actually do, they might simply be wrong; Trump's supporters might believe every Hillary Clinton voter is an SJW and therefore voted for a candidate they believe is an SJW, but I think we both agree that not every liberal is an SJW, so the assesment would be incorrect. I don't say you're wrong 100%, I'm not American myself and I haven't spoken to American liberals or conservatives irl, and even if I had that would only be my experience and not statistical fact, so you might well be correct. I just wanted to point out what I think was a flaw in your reasoning. And I'm not denying there are no ignorant and stupid American liberals, I simply don't think the majority of them are that way. This is mainly due to my experiences dealing with Americans in the Internet; I have met many who have proclaimed themselves liberals, who, like you, have expressed a will to understand the other side and have denounced the harmful practices of the extreme left, but more rarely have I met a self-proclaimed American conservative who would express the same understanding towards liberals. Again, I understand this is my personal experience and not statistical fact, but it is why I don't believe American liberals are as ignorant as you say

We also aid with the blocked other others from aiding Yemen with food and medicine (if i remember correctly) causing millions to die.

John Oliver is a national treasure. Glad this show gets so many views.
Yet his british
@Lee David it's called satire
Mainly do to algorithms dood in the end Oliver is propaganda. Even when I'd watch foreign new on NHK I'd see their agenda. One main thing is they want Free Trade. So hard
French gave us the Statue of Liberty and the English gave us John Oliver.
John provides educational information I was missing. I don't agree with the opinions in all his videos. I do agree most of the time. I'd think less of him if he were a complete sycophant to my world view.
I've watched coverage of this from most of the major news outlets. They've all been asking the same question: "How did they think this wouldn't be noticed?"
John Oliver is the first to air my first thought: this is done so obviously, they're clearly sending a message.

The fact that he doubled checked if the journalist was an american citizen to calculate how much compassion to give is really disgusting
To be fair if he was an American citizen it could probably be considered an act of war against the US.
If you watch the clip closely you will see Trump already had the concept of one brutal murder vs $110 billion being acceptable in his head before even confirming Kashoggi was only a US permanent resident. He could have been a citizen and Trump would’ve said the same lines.
Trump neither did nor said anything relevant after Erdoğan's goons attacked American citizens in Washington, DC.

Lol don’t forget how oppressive the US is too
Add Thailand and Burma onto the least of countries with oppressive regimes that can get away with it. But here its mostly because the rest of the world never hears about it.

And then pretend like the entire economy of the country is sitting on weapons deals. As if. Jobs will be lost, boo-hoo. It's a drop in the bucket and those involved are a super minoriy.

Our nation's relationship with Saudi Arabia has harmed their neighbors, resulting in war, a famine, and an immigration ban for Yemen, and yet not enough average Americans seem to know about these issues.
ikr? Trumps businesses, the Clinton's Clinton Foundation, the military industrial complex, etc, etc.
Did you know that the hothis in Yemen use ********children as their soldiers*******
As for the war in Yemen it is similar in many ways to to the US false war against communism in Vietnam, except that this one has to do with national security of Saudi Arabia and Yemen it self.
How can you say that Saudi Arabia is bombing civilians when their enemy is using innocent children as their soldiers!!!???
I guess it is not relevant anymore that Saudi Arabia did 9/11...
"how can you say that Saudi Arabia is bombing civilians"
As an example: because they bombed a school bus.
"Assad is killing his own people with chemical weapons"
The promised proof of that hasn't been presented.
Lol.
Did you know that 15 of the 19 terrorists from the 9/11 attack were citizens of Saudi Arabia? And US sells weapons to them?? Ehh... WHY?
Torben Rudgaard
Exactly.
Because, money. If Saudis withdraw their stocks from USA, US economy would collapse within a day.
They were from Saudi Arabia, but the attacks were made on behalf of Al Qaeda. So I get why this is a different situation.
At least it's a start that john oliver is talking about them at all. conservatives understand liberals far better than liberals understand conservatives.
@@rodblues6832 On what do you base this assumption? Just because someone doesn't agree with you doesn't mean they don't understand you
@@exantiuse497you're absolutely right, but in this case, liberals don't even understand what they disagree with.
