I saw Ani play at Earlham College in 93 or 94 with about 50 other people, and I have to say I would have never seen this duet coming but im here and loving it. And listening to John on my mothers albums since childhood, and I regret never catching him on the road more than just about anything. I use to walk to the church house just to shovel some snow too.
my eyes get misty watching this, the obvious respect she has for him, the respect he must have for her, the fact that this might be the only time they ever sing this song together, two people doing what they want for the people they love... we should all be so fortunate to have moments like this in our own lives
Thanks to the great John Prine for introducing Ani Difranco to a new audience. She deserves to be heard in the mainstream because she is ducking awesome.
Don't apologize for the "shaking", this video is a gem and we thank you for sharing this beautiful moment, which shows -among other things- that Ani di Franco is really a very humble girl.
This is so much fun. I already knew the 2nd part (the harmony she sings the 1st time she comes in) well enough to sing it on my own and here she comes in the 2nd time singing a 3rd part! So it is Ani Difranco and John Prine and me singing 3-part harmony here! How kind of them to exercise/exorcise an old lady like this!
do true ... back in the 70’s I was listening to John way up here in Canada!! And Ive loved him ever since and Ill miss him! RIP JOHN PRINE & I hope you are still smokin your 9 mi long cigarette!!
They sound perfect together. When they came to Portland I wanted to go so bad, but didn't have the money. This lets me know how great it would've been. Thanks for the clip
In the mid 70s my wife and I got a boat from Signapore to Perth,Australia. An Aussie on board saw that I was a big JP fan and asked if Iknew the words to Paradise, between us we worked it out.On the last night of the trrip there was a concert and he got up and sangit for us.He was good too. The Everlys do a good version also.
Hard to believe someone can get better with age to this degree! The name this song is "paradise". He will be playing in the Bay area (Cal.) on the 5th, 7th, and 8th THIS week. Can't believe I'm only going to two! Get there!
Sweet! Two great artists...so fine. And on a totally unrelated path - I think Jason is playing a G&L Broadcaster guitar. Unique, distinctive, appropriate.
Johnny Cash starred in a movie that was adapted from this song. It was in the 70's and I don't recall the name of the film. It was pretty good from what I remember.
I think Ani has some love for El Bluegrass maybe? Buffalo ain't exactly a big town. I'd bet a dollar she's from a surrounding area. Lockport, Ransomville, etc.
@Randy Bingham Would not have surprised me, in the world we live in now. Loved the song and JP was totally unique. He was kind of like Roger Miller in the way he wrote. Took what was there and wrote a song about it. Tom T. is similar.
Boy, that's an example of showbiz at its.... most pragmatic. Two artists who have damn little in common, and now that her career is fizzling, while he's on the babyboomer's last go-round, she has to stick around for the encore, and he has to hold off on Angel From Montgomery so they can sing a lackluster coffeehouse duet..... "Yee-haw," as somebody in the audience managed to emit....presumably one of their agents....

Song title is "Paradise" from his debut album. It's been giving people goosebumps for 50 years or so.

i,ve grew old with john, and he can still bring a lump to my throat.. great post.
This man's ability to warm my soul is incredible!
Two of my favorites of all time. I would have never thought they'd perform together.
You just made my whole week!!!...thank you!!!

"I want to give two thumbs and then some.."
thumbs up, touch it twice and it results in a removable... Needs fixing... "You're welcome, as that solved problem, "(by me, L.T.)™© will make You (millions) who carries it through. So hey remember that you got the millions from ""Lalania Thielen, part of the soulution" ™"2018""

Paradise!! Thanx, the shake dont mean shit!! Beautiful!!
Song is called Paradise by John Prine! All of it is a true story... go down to Ky,down by the green river and ask em about Paradise.

Beautiful! Thanks for sharing this.
It's called Pardise. Prine's closed every show with this song in the dozens of times I 've seen him.
PARADISE, Prine's Anthem.
And now his ashes have been scattered in the Green River. God rest his spirit.
good stuff, thanks for the upload.
Thank you for this video. Good work. :-)

When I was a child my family would travel
Down to Western Kentucky where my parents were born
And there's a backwards old town that's often remembered
So many times that my memories are worn.
Chorus:
And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the Green River where Paradise lay
Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking
Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away
Well, sometimes we'd travel right down the Green River
To the abandoned old prison down by Airdrie Hill
Where the air smelled like snakes and we'd shoot with our pistols
But empty pop bottles was all we would kill.
Repeat Chorus:
Then the coal company came with the world's largest shovel
And they tortured the timber and stripped all the land
Well, they dug for their coal till the land was forsaken
Then they wrote it all down as the progress of man.
Repeat Chorus:
When I die let my ashes float down the Green River
Let my soul roll on up to the Rochester dam
I'll be halfway to Heaven with Paradise waitin'
Just five miles away from wherever I am.
The song's called "Paradise" was on John's first album.
Two of my favourite artists; I love this.
What city was this taken in? Because I saw them in Seattle .. and it changed my entire life. Thank you. Much love. 🤠
It's Paradise times two!
The great Ani
Thanks.....xo
the song is called "Paradise"
Remember Ani has always called herself a "little folksinger" and did an album with Utah Phillips
Beautiful
PARADISE!!! (the name of the song)
PARADISE...
i saw prine and ani, and i didn't even look for the song title
The name of the song I believe is "Paradise Kentucky"
San Judas Tadeo John Prine
Paradise.
The song is "Paradise."
"Paradise" (a.k.a. Mr. Peabody's Coal Train").
Word
YOWSAH!
anyone from KY should know the title of this song. Ani just used some lyrics from Harlan County USA for a song in recent years too. hmm....
John Prine tribute song by songwriter Dennis Callahan
I think Ani has some love for El Bluegrass maybe? Buffalo ain't exactly a big town. I'd bet a dollar she's from a surrounding area. Lockport, Ransomville, etc.

^Asshole from 6 years ago doesn't know anything about John Prine.
You sure are a happy go lucky upbeat asshole aren’t you?
"Obvious respect"? Looks to me like she is bored out of her mind and would rather be anywhere else.
Just not all that impressed with her.
She's giving the man his space. I see admiration, a little nervousness, and maybe some professional courtesy?
