Tutorial made very simple. The only two things to add are: 1. if you have a normal drain plug nut, make sure you buy a new crush washer with it. 2. You never mentioned the other o-ring thing in the new oil filter...
I LOVE the safety measure that you implemented in this video. I work on cars a lot in my garage and I can't stress enough about the safety. I still get anxious going underneath the car even with 3 and 4 jack stands.

Lexus recommend in the manual to check the oil 5min after the motor reached operating temps at on level ground of course. They're notoriously hard to read cold . Also the Awd is 250 takes just a bit more oil 6.3L for rw drive and 6.4L for the AWD . Awesome video by the way.
I 'm happy to find this (your) video. Your work very thought through. Every step simply easy and thank you so much for sharing an idea of Oil Drain Valve. I find very great idea. I live in US and no one mention about this part. With all the respect, I chose subscribed.
This is really great detailed information. I’m in the market for an is250 or is350 I’m not biased in either one because I’d be happy with either one. I’m doing all the research on these I can before I make a purchase, and by far you have the best detailed videos and reviews I’ve seen on these.
@@carswithsonduren glad to be here!!! I really appreciate your detailed videos especially since now I know the only real headache of maintenance is the spark plugs on the driver side lol. The oil change seems relatively easy I just need to make sure I have all the right tools and I can do it myself. The is250 I’m looking at it the base 07 132k on the odometer and a spotless carfax report. $9,995 I’m confident I can talk it down to $7k and buy it outright and have a car I’ve always wanted.
That’s pretty low kilometres for the car definitely negotiate hard and I promise you you’re going to love it. One of the best cars I’ve ever owned. Well it doesn’t have a lot of power is still manages to feel very sporty as well.
@@carswithsonduren ah yes but even a Miata MX-5 Mazda manages to be fun and sporty with only 120bhp, and I had a 96 Mustang GT V8 with the 2V 4.6 engine the one most popular for being ragged on and yet it’s also the most reliable engine mustangs of the last multiple generations and all I had to do was put slightly better stickier tires and in transformed it into a corn carving prancing pony. These IS Models both come with double wishbone suspension in the front and independent suspension in the rear. Followed by from what I can see that the engines are set where at least 80-70% of the engines are positioned behind the front wheels which should give them both roughly a 56/44 weight difference front and back which is almost perfect for a car of their weight class.
@@carswithsonduren ah I’m not far off haha. They copied Maserati’s idea of 52/48 weight distribution. So yeah all it would take is a slight change of tires depending on the time of year like I’m in the Pacific Northwest of US and our weather isn’t much different from most of Canada so it would probably corner amazingly with possible changes to Pirelli P-Zero tires, ironically the stock tires for your R8, and not only would they have a very impressive performance for grip but also relatively confident with bad weather set of tires.
Hey man do you happen to find it tough to undo the oil filter cartridge? I think mine might be seized at this point, might need the dealer to undo it for me
Thanks for this video. I am starting to do my own oil changes on my Lexus too. I notice mine burns a quart or liter every 1700 miles (2750 kilometers) but that’s because I use an oil called a blend. Synthetic blend. On your opinion synthetic can be better ? It’ll burn less oil and won’t lose its viscosity as quickly as conventional oil? Anyhow these are old cars so there will be some oil consumption inevitably.
Glad it helped I think you should go full synthetic, it will burn less but you will still have oil consumption and that is normal for these cars as they age.
If you do your oil changes at home. You should own a set of ramps. Just drive right on top with front wheels. No need to jack up the car every time. They make life so much easier. 👍

Actually, where we live, Walmart sells OEM Toyota filters. I think if I was in Canada I might consider using 0W-30 oil instead of 5W-30 (unless I had a garage like you do).
Hallo, how often do you change the oil of the automatic gearbox. Here in Germany I hear different variants. Only to change 30 % or to times 60 % every 60.000 km or to flood the complete automatic gearbox with oil and then refill it. Do you have any experiences concerning this... Greetings from Germany Frank
8:18 great video, much more helpful than most of the other IS250/350 how-to vids on RUclips. But damn, son, look at all that rust. That frame's gonna need some major repairs soon. Canadian winters, eh?
Definitely Canadian winters doing work on the frame! Thanks for the compliments and welcome to the channel I hope you subscribe, lots of Lexus videos and other car videos you will love!
Checking oil level with clean, fresh, very clear oil can be hard! I really enjoyed your video, thank you for sharing. I would make two recommendations that might make things better? easier? I don't know. This is not to criticize what you did, I mean, mission accomplished! Oil and filter changed safely! To remove the o-ring gasket from the filter housing cap, I use a rag or shop towel, and press about a 30mm section of the o-ring together with my thumbs, causing the o-ring to bunch up, out of the groove. No need for a small screw driver, and no risk of scratching the cap. Sometimes it doesn't work and I end up using a tool as you did, but when it works (most of the time it works) it is faster. When the filter cap tool sticks to the housing cap, (every.single. time!) I just remove the ratchet, because I'm going to be using the cap wrench in a few moments to tighten everything back up. Then, since it is now stuck going the other way, I switch the ratchet mechanism and just give the wrench a slight pop, which causes the cap wrench to disengage from the flutes of the filter housing cap. Again, thank you for taking the time to get camera angles and edit your footage! Your video is clear and informative. Stay safe.
First thanks for the comments I really appreciate it and welcome to the channel 🙂 great point on removing the o-ring makes more sense and less chance for damage, and huge thank you on the tip when the adapter gets stuck I will definitely do that going forward instead of my traditional struggle haha!
@@carswithsonduren Had to order that oil filter tool from Amazon today. Toyota/Lexus don’t carry it anymore where I live. They said people wasn’t buying it because it cost $120 US.
What about the smaller oring and the transparent plastic nozzle? You don't install it? I didn't either on my last oil change. I see many people don't use them... What is your take about it?
@@carswithsonduren Have you experienced any problems with the sticky dash and door cards that ive read these cars suffer from, i dont own one but are looking to own an IS 350 but are unsure how common this issue is, any help would be appreciated, thanks Kelvin.
Honestly I haven't had any sticky dash issues but I know other owners have maybe it's because I am in Canada. Regardless I believe there are a few fixes out there and it's not that big of a deal in my honest opinion
I think theres a bolt on the front of your oil filter cap to drain the oil from the filter prior to loosening the cap. With the right tools, you can make the change a little cleaner. Not the end of the world if you don't use that, but it's another spot where oil can leak.
I appreciate that you do these videos , it being I own an 08 IS250. I have done it on my own a few times, the oil change. I use the blend, called synthetic blend. So far so good. At 121k miles I wonder if I should change to full synthetic. Anyhow, sexy car these are.
Nice what color is yours? Yeah I would change to full synthetic especially since you were still pretty low kilometer. Depending on your climate it could definitely help and prices have come down on full synthetic oils

When you drive a 350 does the 250 ever feel so much weaker ? I am a member of a community on Facebook called “Lexus IS Freaks” and literally almost everyone pokes fun at the 250’s and calls them slow lol.
I typically like to change my oil once every 8,000 to 10,000 km. Now, you should always follow your factory recommended guidelines, even for my 2023 Lexus NX 350H it says to change it every 16,000 km but I’d prefer to do it earlier. quite honestly there’s been lots of analysis done online about the life of synthetic oil’s and many of them are good to be used to 16,000 km no problem.
@@carswithsonduren ya not 16,000. im a mechanic i still change my syntheic oil at 6000km. my car was over 18 years old, it never had any problems. i take care my cars, if u want ur car to last, still do it every 6000km. if u wanna keep ur car for long.

You're video is helpful especially the safety part of placing the jacks correctly. Long time ago, a family friend who was a 18-wheeler mechanic, was under a rig and for whatever reason the jack just gave out and it crushed his skull killing him instantly!! So I appreciate your level of safety in this video. I appreciate it man.
In the manual it says 1.6 quarts from low to high on dipstick the max oil capacity is 6.6 for rwd therefore the low mark is 5quarts the middle is 5.8quartz and full no more is 6.6 ad stated as max oil capacity.
I'm glad you asked. This is a very debated item on the forum and I have never changed the transmission fluid on either of the Lexus IS250 or IS350 in my ownership. Lexus claims this is a lifetime fluid and is sealed. There have been some tests that show that where does happen and it does lose a percentage of its viscosity over a certain amount of time but there hasn't been any conclusive evidence I have seen that show keeping the fluid in will cause unnecessary and accelerated harm to the car. To be honest at this point for both of these cars I kind of want to see how far we'll go to test Lexus's claims. Not saying I would stop anyone from changing the oil, but I have decided to keep the original transmission oil as per Lexus recommendation and see what happens long term 👍
@@carswithsonduren Maaaan, that's a no-win experiment for you. Where you get those Lexus brand Calipers?
I have the genuine oil filter I usually use since I like genuine filters and I use mobile 1 or Toyota genuine.
My go-to video for when I do the once a year oil change on my 2007 IS 250
I expect you will be returning to this video every year for the rest of your life cuz this car is a tank baby :)
What if you don't have the oil filter removal tool, can you still manage to open it? Or you need the tool
The tool makes it so much easier. You can use oil filter grips but not as easy.
@@carswithsonduren thank you so much for your fast response! And thanks for the reply.
Anytime goodluck :)
Is the oil filer supposed to be that tight?
Great video !
Thanks Peter welcome to the channel!!
Great video bro
Thanks brother welcome to the channel!
@@carswithsonduren Had to order that oil filter tool from Amazon today. Toyota/Lexus don’t carry it anymore where I live. They said people wasn’t buying it because it cost $120 US.
Holy inflation at its worst.
What about the smaller oring and the transparent plastic nozzle? You don't install it? I didn't either on my last oil change. I see many people don't use them... What is your take about it?
Nope not needed for the IS!
What was the small diameter gasket in the packet for, isnt it needed?
Not needed
@@carswithsonduren Have you experienced any problems with the sticky dash and door cards that ive read these cars suffer from, i dont own one but are looking to own an IS 350 but are unsure how common this issue is, any help would be appreciated, thanks Kelvin.
Honestly I haven't had any sticky dash issues but I know other owners have maybe it's because I am in Canada. Regardless I believe there are a few fixes out there and it's not that big of a deal in my honest opinion
@@carswithsonduren what are the
Fixes you refer to, possibly a dash mat for the dash but what about the door cards?
Do you need that oil filter tool or can you get away by hand
It will be very hard to remove it without the tool imho
My oil filter comes with one bigger gasket and a smaller one. I saw two gaskets with your filter too. What's that small one for?
Not needed for this car you can discard the smaller one
@@carswithsonduren Thanks for the answer. It helped.
Anytime Julian welcome to the channel :)
I think theres a bolt on the front of your oil filter cap to drain the oil from the filter prior to loosening the cap. With the right tools, you can make the change a little cleaner. Not the end of the world if you don't use that, but it's another spot where oil can leak.
That removal tool looks exactly like the one that I use on my ‘15 Prius
Yep that makes sense!
@@carswithsonduren 121,000 miles I meant to say. I know if it’s Kilometers the actual miles would be pretty low. Anyhow I have a dark grey one , I named her Luna After the moon lit sky 🌚. When you drive a 350 does the 250 ever feel so much weaker ? I am a member of a community on Facebook called “Lexus IS Freaks” and literally almost everyone pokes fun at the 250’s and calls them slow lol.
Yea it's definitely quite a bit slower so that is true ;p
We have used nothing but synthetic for a long time starting with a 1996 Honda Accord we had.
After how many miles would you recommend changing my synthetic oil?
You are a smart man :) I agree with you.
What is the size of the oil filter if you order the genuine one ? A3 or A5 ? Is it different size for different model year of 2is ? Thanks in advance!
Really helpful - obviously the oil change steps but where to jack the IS up from & place the jack stands & safety tips - Thanks
Glad you found it helpful and welcome to the channel 😎👍 safety is always so important you never want to be the statistic of a fatal accident
very good safety first 5 stars great video, thanks
I’ll do all this after my warranty is up. I get free massages and Starbucks while I wait anyway at Lexus dealership. 🙂
Do you have to have the that oil filter tool to remove the housing?
Im trying to change the oil in my 2006 Lexus IS250.. So do i need to go buy one?
You don’t need it it’s necessarily, but you should get it. It makes it way easier.
@@carswithsonduren ok well I just got one and I seen Mobile 1 is the oil that people use but Valvoline is ok to use?
Oil is oil to a certain degree but it should be ok?
@QCnc7OH4 that’s correct 👍
@QCnc7OH4 I’m sorry to hear about that story and that’s exactly why you need to do what I explained. Thanks for the comment man :)
see how the oil filter came with two seals?
you addressed one of them, but there’s another smaller one? what’s that for?
Not required for this car service. You can simply discard it.
So what about the small oring? I also received this small plastic tube thing, not sure what it's for.
Not required
@@carswithsonduren ok thank you
You recomemd me change the oil transmisión if the car drives and prety well ? Or Is not good idea
If it drives well I would personally say don’t bother changing it as Lexus claims that is a lifetime fluid.
@@carswithsonduren thanks for you Time keep goin canadian
Whats the chances that a stray rock or whatever could bounce up and knock the toggle switch into the drain position? Thats what id be worried about
Next to no chance.
@@carswithsonduren I agree after watching the whole video! Guess I jumped the gun. Good job!
my lexus gs 350 2018 takes 0w20 ....
can I still use 5w30 ??
❤thank you for your video bro.
Wipe a little oil around the new rubber seal then attach over housing.
Great video
Thanks Helena!
What is the mini gasket that comes with new oil filters ?
Is it okay to only fill up to 5L?
Fill up to the proper amount
@@carswithsonduren Sounds good
In the manual it says 1.6 quarts from low to high on dipstick the max oil capacity is 6.6 for rwd therefore the low mark is 5quarts the middle is 5.8quartz and full no more is 6.6 ad stated as max oil capacity.
Have you ever changed its transmission fluid?
I've recently come across some info that I find pretty reasonable and reliable that you might enjoy watching (thank COVID for all the time on RUclips). This is a pretty good analysis: ruclips.net/video/aBySZB11ls8/видео.html And this fellow, I figure, has forgot more about transmissions than most of us will ever know: ruclips.net/video/xUFY0L_zFek/видео.html
@@blacksaxcam Thanks man will watch and check it out shortly I am now more curious!
@@carswithsonduren Ok i see. Its because I have Toyota Mark X which shares the same platform as Lexus is 250, so i have been reluctant to change transmission fluid since i had many stories about lifetime fluid.
@@carswithsonduren What about Rear Differiental Oil, have you done that on yours? according to the Australian service manual it's every 36months or 45,000kms
In the manual it says 1.6 quarts from low to high on dipstick the max oil capacity is 6.6 for rwd therefore the low mark is 5quarts the middle is 5.8quartz and full no more is 6.6 ad stated as max oil capacity.
So where does the smaller rubber gasket go? Just don’t use that at all??
Just don't use it at all not required for this car
@@carswithsonduren thanks so much man!! Just finished up the oil change
Funny I just did another oil change myself glad the video was helpful and welcome to the channel Anthony!
So I keep seeing 0w-20 is oil weight for 2012, is that not right?
Any use for the remaining gasket in the pakaging i mean the small one. Since i can see 2 gasket in the. The big one and the small one.
No use for that
what if you have no jack stands?
hey man, you're a beast. thank you!
Anytime and welcome to the channel 😌
R te banks bro i was lost about the small ring man but I realize my car doesn’t have the drain plug on the filter
Big help. Thank you.
Where does the smaller gasket go? Does anyone know
Not required for your car.
Very helpful, thank you
