Thank you for explaining what the small o-ring is for. Mine also didn't have the drain plug in the oil filter housing so after using up the large o-ring; i had the small o-ring leftover as extra and it confused the hell out of me.
Technically you could remove it by hand. However very few people would have the strength to remove and properly reinstall. It is a pretty tight space and very hard to get leverage. The tool is cheap and can be acquired at any autoparts store. They are worth every penny.
Thanks bro I was able to do my oil and filter change after watching your video I was lost about the small ring My car doesn’t have that drain plug on the filter housing
Yes. It will make a mess but it can be done. You might try loosening it until the oil starts to flow but without removing the plug completely. That will make it easier to shut off when desired as well as better control the volume you drain.
There’s an extra transparent hard plastic tube with flange in the middle that could barely cover the plastic at the end of the filter in the package of the new filter I bought. What’s that for?
Some of these oil filter housing have a drain plug mounted in the house. On my RAV4, I use that transparent plastic tube to drain the housing before removing.
I know this is 6 years later but I just got me a 2006 Lexus IS250 and of course it's used with 140k+ miles and when I get up to 60 miles an hour or faster it smells like rotten eggs I heard that was maybe carbon build up or is that the Cathletic Converter?
Awesome video, but bro! Tank Average: 31 mpg thats cool :). I was able to get 29 in my 350 but that was with alot of snail driving and cruise control, lol. Great Video!
Lexus are now recommending 0w20 from 2012 on these engines ..... im sure its too thin personally i have a knocking noise from what sounds like a cam or valve and was hoping 5w30 might help quieten it down but was worried about going against manufacturers spec
the 0w20 was recommended for MPG gain (which is weak anyway) -5w30 comes with better engine protection!! i was taking my Is350 to the delearship here in charlotte NC for the past 2 years, and this is what i noticed, at first they used synthetic blend, then for once they used 0w20 FS, the last couple of times i was there they used 5w30 FS (they have a contract with Valvoline) so i asked the service advisor on why they keep changing, he didnt give me a logic answer, sounded like "we use what we have" and thats it. Since my last visit i decide to do my OC myself, saves money and you know whats running in your engine.Amsoil in MHO and per the research i did online is hands down the best oil ever, few bucks more than M1 but the difference is in long term protection.
I'm not really a huge dumbass when it comes to taking care of cars but OH BOY was I confused when I started changing the oil. The filter I bought from shop looked like the old one you had but it had that small rubber seal and small white plastic idontknowwhattocall. But luckily from this video I found out that those were replacement parts for oil drain ways from the filter mount.
Supertech full synthetic oil is on a Parr with Mobil1 but for considerably less money. I figure instead of changing Mobil1 every 10,000 miles I'll just use Supertech 0W-20 full synthetic and change it every 5,000 miles. Question... How does 5W-30 protect your engine any better just because you live in a warmer climate? Sounds ridiculous to me. When it's 100°F outside and my engine is NOT running what is the oil protecting my engine from? If it's not running, there is no friction and no engine wear. If it is running then it's likely more than 200°F inside the engine regardless of the outside temperature.
How much oil do you put in? Cause the guy at my auto parts store said it’s 6.3 liters and online it says that it’s a 3.5 liter engine so idk. Please help
Our 2014 is250 has no drain plug on the oil filter, but it has a 3/8 female square hole and a 3/8 ratchet extension fits right in it. No special lexus/Toyota tool needed.
finally i could do an oil change on my is350, never tried because i didnt want to ruin anything because it ill probably come out expensive, ive always used mobil 1, this time ill use royal purple. helpful video
Changing the oil alone would not have that affect. There is something else. You will need to identify some anomaly. Some possible things to consider.. Did you drain as much oil as you put in? What color was the oil? Do you have any codes or lights coming on the dash? Was there anything in the oil when you drained it? Were you noticing a drop in fuel economy or power leading up to the oil change? Any unusual sounds before or after the oil change? Anything else out of the ordinary?
Is350 5w-30 full synthetic. Mobil 1 extended performance used by Lexus Dealerships. Best market filter is Mobil 1 brand.I do my changes every 3 months when my service light shows on mine. Highway driver 200k miles now. 👍
I have the same exact filter canister or cap as describe in this video, but it had the smaller o-ring on the bottom of the perforated tube. So that's where I place the new smaller ring, in my case, before I slipped the new filter. I think it should be installed for better filtering.
How in the heck are you getting 31 mpg??? I have tried everything from driving like a grandpa to driving like a typical BMW driver and can only get 25. Teach me your ways!
Maybe this will help someone. The car in this video is a RWD model -- it has a different shaped oil pan from AWD IS250. The oil pan on the AWD model looks like an automatic transmission oil pan (square and flat,) while the transmission oil pan looks like an engine oil pan. Both drain plugs are 14mm (thanks, Toyota)
0-20 is probably for synthetic oil and 5-30 for regular. these numbers are recommended to save you "gas mileage" remember in 2008 when we had a recession and everyone went crazy about gas prices and the housing crash? anyway, if you dont live in an area where it snows, 10-30w is better.

Lovely Video clip! Excuse me for chiming in, I would appreciate your opinion. Have you heard the talk about - Parlandealey Vanish Ringworm Process (should be on google have a look)? It is a great exclusive product for revealing how to repair your vehicle without the headache. Ive heard some great things about it and my work buddy finally got amazing success with it.
Makes me cringe a bit seeing people touch anything oil related without gloves. Oil is carcinogenic as FUCK. keep your fingers covered, people. Thanks for the video, confirmed where I thought the oil sump plug is.
It is a pretty universal "premium" grade stocked by shops and auto parts stores. As far as premium synthetics go I would put as average. It isn't a bad product but I don't get excited about it either.
+innocuous_name Oh ok thanks I just used it in my 2007 Acura RL with 170K. Next oil change I will be using Mobil 1 Extended Performance full synthetic, Royal Purple was too expensive for being just "average".
I noticed you're using still synthetic oil at 109K miles. If synthetic oil gets into the cylinders it has are hard time burning off since it is more inert. My IS350 is getting close to 60K and I'm trying to decide if I should continue to use synthetic.
Corpus Innominata That is an interesting point. The traditional recommendation is to not switch back and forth between conventional and systhetic oils so I have always stuck with the manufacturer's recommendation and have never had a lick of trouble. I have always used higher mileage vehicles and have been pleased with the results but if you end up switching over I would love to hear how it goes and if you notice any differences in performance.
it would actually be nice to see you actual changing the oil n not pretending to. dont worry there r other better videos that actually shows the oil be changed...cya
You make an argument for spending extra money on overpriced Amsoil, when you can buy Mobil 1 full synthetic oil cheaper, and also more readily. Yet after spending the extra money on the Amsoil, you throw in a cheap, poorly made, Wix paper oil filter telling everyone that it's the best filter you can buy. Use the Toyota TRD oil filter instead (PTR43_00083) It is built like a tank in comparison to that paper filter, and made specifically for SYNTHETIC oil.
As noted in the video Toyota's recommendation changed after 06 with the Obama administration's requirements for fuel economy. The 06 is clearly labeled for the oil used in the video.

This is the best video I have found on oil changes for the Lexus is250 & 350 cars ! Bravo !!
Thank you! Very nice DIY. Straight to the point, easy to understand, and informative.
This video was very helpful after watching your video I decided to use ramps as well it seemed a little bit quicker and easier than Jack & Jack Stands

He is a very good teaching, I understand the way he shows in here, thanks, I love it.
You mentioned in your video that it’s 10,000 mile oil change interval..why does my car reminder go off at 5000 miles??
The particular amsoil oil that I buy is a synthetic 10,000 mile but most oils are recommended for 5,000 miles.
nice DiY video.
can the oil filter be removed without that toyota tool?
can't just unscrew it by hand?
Technically you could remove it by hand. However very few people would have the strength to remove and properly reinstall. It is a pretty tight space and very hard to get leverage. The tool is cheap and can be acquired at any autoparts store. They are worth every penny.
I accidentally put the small oring on the tube inside of the filter cap. I thought that's what it was for. Am I screwed?
Thanks bro I was able to do my oil and filter change after watching your video I was lost about the small ring
My car doesn’t have that drain plug on the filter housing
can you tell me in detail where the flasher relay is, please. Lexus IS 220d , 2006.
Can you tighten the drain plug while the oil is pouring down? I want to drain only a few quarts or so.
Yes. It will make a mess but it can be done. You might try loosening it until the oil starts to flow but without removing the plug completely. That will make it easier to shut off when desired as well as better control the volume you drain.
@@innocuous_name7212 Ah i see that's a good idea. Thank you for the quick response!
How many miles would you wait before doing another full synthetic oil change?
It will depend on the quality of the oil purchased but no less than 5,000 miles
Thank you for the video

Thomas Tuan Nguyen yeah i scraped up my IS the last time doing this

6.3 qt. of oil for the change is accurate.
3.5 litres is the size of the displacement if the engine, it is not related to the amount of oil in the engine
Our 2014 is250 has no drain plug on the oil filter, but it has a 3/8 female square hole and a 3/8 ratchet extension fits right in it. No special lexus/Toyota tool needed.

No no a thousand times no. The instructions that came with the filter show the smaller "o" ring is for the drain plug, as the man says, doh.

there is no way you get 30.5 mpg on the IS350. How?
I be getting 32 on the hwy... in my 250..
Can i use this method also for the ISF?
The overall all method will be the same but there may be some minor differences such a wrench size and filter location.
What is the size of the washer?
Will 5w-40 be fine?
You can use it in a pinch but I wouldn't make a habit of it.
